DJI to release car-related products on April 19 at the Shanghai Auto Show

The automobile industry has in recent times seen new entrants especially with the shift towards autonomous and electric vehicles. Just recently, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi announced plans to commence the manufacture of electric vehicles (EVs). Another Chinese manufacturer, drone-maker DJI is finally making a move towards the automobile industry. DJI

A post by DJI Automotive’s official WeChat account has revealed that the company will be releasing car-related products at the Shanghai Auto Show which will commence on April 19 and end on April 28. The announcement did not specify the product that we should expect from the renowned commercial drone-maker but can be taken as an official announcement of the brand’s entrance into the automobile industry.

Of course, DJI won’t likely build a complete car anytime soon but the company had earlier hinted of plans to focus on smart driving systems as well as software and hardware solutions to help automakers quickly build affordable smart cars.DJI Automotive

DJI Automotive is said to be a brand of DJI’s intelligent driving business, which is committed to using space intelligent technology to empower travel, focusing on the R&D, production, and sales of intelligent driving systems and their core components. Earlier this year, job listings by the Chinese tech giant revealed it was hiring engineers with experience in related fields such as auto electronics, autonomous driving, in-car software, and the automobile industry.

Some persons familiar with the matter also disclosed that that drone maker was planning to sell driver-assist technology which includes LiDAR sensors, a crucial component of self-driving vehicles. At present, DJI has nearly 70% of the global commercial drone market, and the LiDAR technology used on drones also plays a key role in autonomous driving.

DJI has reportedly also got other solutions for autonomous driving functions. We’ll have to wait for the event to see what the company has in store.

Honor Exec believes products are the best endorsement, no plans to bring in celebrities for promotion

With the launch of the Honor V40 series, the company saw the release of its first flagship product since its independence from Huawei. Since then, rumor has surfaced that the company might be roping in celebrities for endorsements, but that is apparently not being planned.

HONOR V40 5G Featured

As per Jiang Hairong, CMO of the Chinese tech giant, the company’s product are the best form of endorsement and it has no plans of bringing in known individuals or popular celebrities to endorse its new products. In other words, the former Huawei sub brand has will be launching new smartphones under its own banner and promotions, without the aid of paid endorsements or promotion deals with any celebrities.

For those unaware, it is quite common within the smartphones industry to have a brand ambassador to promote the company’s new or upcoming launches. Similarly, celebrities and known icons are also brought in to promote launches of specific series or models in launch conferences and events as well. A good example of this being Robert Downey Jr, who has promoted OnePlus devices.

Honor V40 5G

Thus, the statement from the senior official of the Chinese smartphone maker it clear that it has no similar plans for endorsement deals. Meaning, the rumors thus far were false, but that might change sometime in the future. So, stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates regarding this matter or any new and interesting product launches from the smartphone manufacturer.

US Senator aims to ban all major tech mergers and acquisitions

US
Image Via AppleInsider

US Senator Josh Hawley introduced a proposal earlier this week that would ban companies with a market value of more than 100 billion US Dollars for going forward with acquisitions or conduct mergers.

According to an AppleInsider report, Hawley is seeking to bar mergers and buyouts for America’s top performing or big companies. This includes major tech giants like Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, and Google. For those unaware, the Senator is a conservative who has been attacking Big Tech after major platforms were accused of “censoring” Republican voices. Thus, Hawley’s legislation has also been dubbed as the “Trust-Busting for the Twenty-First Century Act.”

The legislation in question will also supplement existing antitrust laws with higher penalties and a lower threshold for prosecution. An example being, companies facing prosecution under federal law would be for “the protection of competition,” rather than just “consumer harm.” This would imply that the firms that lose antitrust lawsuits would be required to “forfeit all their profits resulting from monopolistic conduct” under the new regulation.

US

Furthermore, the Federal Trade Commission or FTC would also receive a new power to regulate “dominant digital firms.” The Senator stated that “This country and this government shouldn’t be run by a few mega-corporations.” He further added that the Republican Party “has got to become the party of trust-busting once again. You know, that’s a part of our history.” Similar to Big Tech, Hawley is also taking steps against major pharmaceuticals based firms that are dominating the medical market.

Realme has been active with its launch cycles in 2021, which also had the introduction of its flagship Realme GT. Now, a company executive has revealed that the upcoming new devices within the Q series will arrive with a balance between performance and price.

Realme

According to Wang Wei, vice president of the Chinese tech giant and president of the global product line, the company’s premium grade handset has seen success with its customers. It offers top notch specs and features and offers great performance, albeit at a higher price than its usual mid range handsets. Intel promises to help automakers, as Biden seeks to ease chip shortage

US President Joe President recently met with executives from various companies earlier this week to address the global chip shortage that has affected the automobile manufacturers. This has even led to Intel announcing its plans to help automakers as well.

Intel

According to a Reuters report, the chip making giant has announced it plans to manufacture chips at its factories for car plants in the next six to nine months. In the White House summit, Biden stated that he had bipartisan support for legislation to fund the semiconductor industry. Furthermore, he had previously announced plans to invest 50 billion US Dollars into the semiconductor manufacturing and research as a part of the his efforts to rebuild US manufacturing under a 2 trillion US Dollar pan.

For those unaware, the world is suffering from a major shortage at the moment, with the automobile industry being one of the market affected by this issue. Car makers even had to compete with the consumer electronics industry for the supply of chips, since the latter has seen a surge in demand due to people spending more time at home. Biden and his advisers are treating the semiconductor shortage as a “top and immediate priority.”

Intel

Pat Gelsinger, Chief Executive of Intel, had also attended the meeting virtually and told Reuters that the firm is planning to start producing chips at its factories within six to nine months to address the shortage. He said that “We’re hoping that some of these things can be alleviated, not requiring a three- or four-year factory build, but maybe six months of new products being certified on some of our existing processes. We’ve begun those engagements already with some of the key components suppliers.”

Sony is looking to develop mobile versions of its popular PlayStation game franchises

Authoritative video games website Eurogamer has discovered that game console manufacturer Sony is hiring an executive at the PlayStation Studios that would drive the development of some of its popular PlayStation game franchises into mobile games with the same quality and appeal as the original game. The new head of the mobile team is likely to have a three to five-year mandate to develop and transform some of the highly successful PlayStation games into mobile applications with commercial viability and widespread acceptance.

Sony PlayStation

Sony has previously made moves to provide mobile versions of its popular games on the PlayStation console to target a larger audience of gaming enthusiasts. However, it has not been a wholly successful project so far. The Xperia Play, a PlayStation phone that could have been a huge hit if it had come at this time, flopped commercially after its launch.

The economic outlook for future mobile PlayStation games franchises looks bright, as it is bound to reach a wider audience, and provide greater revenues for Sony through in-app game purchases. However, there are formidable hurdles in the execution of a mobile gaming strategy. The new mobile executive at Sony PlayStation Studios is to lead the charge to develop the application to adapt to a mobile application without losing the quality and appeal that would encourage gaming fans to explore the gaming experience via their smartphones.

Sony is a leading manufacturer of game consoles and has developed a few highly successful game franchises over the years. The current high-end Sony games console is the PlayStation 5, with many exciting and compelling features that provide an overall engaging gaming experience for users.

Apple has reportedly got a new TV Stick and Amazon Echo-like speaker in the works

Apple TV 4K
Apple TV 4K. Credit Tom’s Guide

Apple currently trails Amazon and Google in the connected home market but the Cupertino-based company is apparently making efforts to change the narrative. A recent report by Bloomberg indicates that Apple is developing two smart home devices with loads of features that could outclass its present lineup of smart home gadgets.

The report says that a new Apple TV accessory with a mixture of features of Apple TV and a HomePod is under development by the US tech giant. The accessory comes with a built-in speaker and camera for video calls. The smart speaker bears a close semblance with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Nest Hub in terms of its basic functionality. Although the product is in early-stage development, the report lists gaming, video streaming, music playback, video calling, and Siri voice assistant capabilities among the device’s features.

The in-development Apple smart display with Siri Voice Assistant support will combine the features of an Apple iPod and HomePod to produce a smart home device with video chat functionality and rumor of a robotic arm for moving the display and tracking users. The new smart display device would not need to be connected to the Apple TV, as its in-built display will serve as the interface for the video chat and other features that would be available on the device.

The two smart home devices have a much broader functionality than the current Apple home lineup and could be targeted at retaining an ebbing customer base. There is no indication yet on the possible date of release of the two models, and Apple is yet to provide a definitive statement on the rumored development of the smart home gadgets.

Apple will also provide the long-awaited update for the Apple TV that could offer some critical fixes to the device, including improving the display refresh rate to 120Hz. The rumored update would be the first since 2017.

Design

The Nokia X10 and the Nokia X20 have the same design. It consists of a punch-hole display with a hole placed in the middle and a rear side made of polycarbonate with a circular camera module and a LED flash on the left. The two models differ in the color variants: the Nokia X10 is available in Forest and Snow hues, while the Nokia X20 was launched in two different color variants: Midnight Sun and Nordic Blue. Nokia X10 and Nokia X20 come with a side-mounted fingerprint reader doubling as a power key placed on the right side. Both the phones are pretty heavy and thick (they weigh more than 200 grams) because they pack big batteries.

Display

Not only the same design: the Nokia X10 and the Nokia X20 also come with the same display. It is an IPS LCD panel with a 450 nit typical brightness, a diagonal of 6.67 inches, and a Full HD+ resolution with 1080 x 2400 pixels. It is not a wonderful display, but it is acceptable for everyone due to its good level of definition. We are talking about IPS panels, so you do not get an amazing color reproduction, but at least they are both more than sufficient panels.

Specs & Software

Nokia X10 and Nokia X20 are powered by the Snapdragon 480 mobile platform supporting 5G connectivity. The processor is the same, but the memory configurations are different. With the Nokia X10, you get three memory configurations: 6/64 GB, 4/128 GB, and 6/128 GB. The Nokia X20 comes in a configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage and a higher-end one with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The phones run Android 11

Camera

The most important differences between the Nokia X10 and the Nokia X20 are in the camera department. We are specifically talking about the main sensor of the quad camera placed on the rear side. The Nokia X10 has an inferior 48 MP camera, while the Nokia X20 has a definitely better 64 MP sensor. The phones offer a pretty nice photo quality if compared to the price tag, not only for the sensors but especially because of the Carl Zeiss optics. The front cameras are different too: the Nokia X10 has a below-average 8 MP selfie snapper, while the Nokia X20 comes with an amazing 32 MP selfie camera.

Battery

While the camera departments are different, the batteries of these devices are the same. We are talking about a battery with a capacity of 4470 mAh supporting 18W fast charging. The battery life is great, they are not among the best battery phones but they last more than one day with moderate usage.

Price

Nokia X10 has a starting price tag of €310/$370 for the base variant with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, while Nokia X20 starts from €350/$417 for the configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage. If we only consider the specifications, the price tags are a bit high. But you should not consider only that: the strongest point of these phones is the software support. Nokia X10 and X20 will get three years of major Android updates, three years of security updates, and even three years of warranty. Unlike other midrange phones, these devices will get software support comparable to the most expensive flagships released by brands like Google and Samsung. Obviously, the Nokia X20 wins the comparison thanks to its better cameras, but if you do not mind having the best camera quality, you will get exactly the same user experience with the Nokia X10 and you will save money at the same time.

Nokia X10 vs Nokia X20: PRO and CONS

Nokia X10

PRO

  • More affordable
  • Same display as the X20
  • Same battery as the X20
  • Same chipset as the X20
  • NFC

CONS

  • Inferior cameras

Nokia X20

[Update] realme to invest $300 million and setup 7 R&D centers across the globe to boost 5G rollout

Update April 14

There was a mistake regarding the investment amount in the PR sent to us. realme is investing $300 million in the 5G development. The changes have been made accordingly.

Original story as follows…

realme has been on a mission to bring the 5G to users around the globe. It is gearing up to launch the 5G version of the realme 8 series soon and has even launched flagships like realme X7 Pro in markets of SEA, India, and other global markets. To accelerate the company’s vision to democratize 5G, it is investing more and setting up new R&D centers.

In a press release, the company’s CEO Sky Li says that the company is a “popularizer
of 5G” in the global arena. realme has always voiced towards the expansion of 5G and in the latest efforts, it ramping up the scale to a greater extent.

The company’s area of focus seems to be in high-performance and affordable 5G products that will cover 70% of its global portfolio in two years. As mentioned above, it is targeting younger generation users in countries like India, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

In the future, it is also planning to set up 10 5G pop-up stores with experience zones exclusively for young people(Gen Z users) to experience first-hand 5G technology in cloud gaming and ultra HD live broadcasts with AR.

realme started its 5G journey with the launch of realme X50 5G back in January 2020. Following this, it has launched several products at aggressive prices and the latest Narzo 30 Pro 5G is an example of it. To make the 5G rollout easier, the company is now investing $300 million $30 million and setting up 7 R&D centers across the globe.

Specifically, it says that it will allocate nearly 90% of the R&D resources for the development of 5G technology, products, and application scenarios. This year, i.e, 2021, it is setting up pilot testing plants in 10-15 markets.

Apart from the roster mentioned above, realme says it also contributes to the construction of 5G networks by working with industry partners, such as major telecoms operators, Internet providers, and application developers to explore new high-end 5G technologies.

Not just that, realme is also aware of the AIoT market and is taking the “smartphone and AIoT” dual approach to catalyze the process. It has already committed to launching more than 100 AIoT products in 2021.

realme was the fastest-growing smartphone brand to hit 50 million shipments last year and the push for 5G will only aid the company further this year. Nevertheless, we wish the company good luck in keeping up the momentum going into 2021 and beyond.
