Priced from €649 and €799, the phones feature MediaTek’s Dimensity 8400 and 9400+ chips, Leica-branded cameras with a 5x periscope zoom, and up to 1TB of storage. Buyers at the Essen store will be able to add a bundled product worth up to €400 for just €1. Options include the Xiaomi Robot Vacuum X20, the Electric Scooter 4 Lite 2nd Gen, the Redmi Pad 2 Pro in Lavender Purple, or the Xiaomi Sound Party speaker.

Xiaomi is also cutting the price of the Redmi Note 14 Pro 5G for the occasion. Reportedly limited to 30 units per day, the phone will sell for €299.90 instead of its usual €529.90. The device offers a 200MP camera, a 5,110mAh battery, and will be available in Midnight Black, Frost Blue, and Lavender Purple.

HyperOS 3 key features

HyperOS 3 introduces Xiaomi HyperIsland (hello, Apple), which makes it easier to manage notifications and improves multitasking. Apple responds to iPhone 17 Pro “Scratchgate” issue

The iPhone 17 Pro has been on shelves for only a few weeks, but early buyers and store visitors have already raised concerns about durability. Some demo units have been spotted with visible marks on their aluminum frames, and the issue has quickly earned the nickname “Scratchgate” online.

The problem appears most often around the sharp edges of the new camera housing. This year, Apple replaced last year’s titanium frame with a lighter aluminum design to reduce weight and improve heat management. While that change has been welcomed by some, durability tests from iFixit and YouTuber JerryRigEverything have shown that the anodized coating on the aluminum can chip when scratched with metal objects, leaving bare spots.

Apple has pushed back on the idea that these marks are actual scratches caused by normal usage. In a statement shared with 9to5Mac, the company said the scuffs on demo units are caused by “material transfer” from the MagSafe stands used in retail displays. According to Apple, the residue can be wiped off and does not represent permanent damage. The company also noted that this kind of transfer can appear on older iPhones or any other Apple product with an anodized aluminum surface, not just the iPhone 17 series.

Not everyone is convinced. iFixit’s testing shows that normal use can wear down the paint layer around the sharp edges of the camera housing within days. Using the phone without a case — which Apple actively promotes — means everyday contact with pocket lint or dust on a table can cause visible marks, and that’s hardly unusual for most users. Not to mention this coating loss goes beyond the kind of removable residue Apple describes.

Redmi’s latest Bluetooth speaker with an IP67 rating, 5 hours of playback, costs just $14

Xiaomi has quietly launched its latest portable audio product, the Redmi Bluetooth Speaker 2, in China. It comes in three playful colors—matte black, mist green, and coral orange—and is priced at just 99 yuan (about $14). Here’s what it offers for the money.

The speaker has a circular design wrapped in fabric mesh on the front, with a glossy waistline that adds a hint of polish. Its round shape keeps it simple and portable, weighing roughly the same as an apple. Xiaomi even includes a detachable metal hook, so users can clip it to a backpack or belt loop.

Under the hood, the Redmi Bluetooth Speaker 2 packs a 1.5-inch, 5W full-range driver paired with a large passive radiator, which Xiaomi says boosts bass while keeping the sound balanced. You can also pair two speakers to create a stereo setup.

Redmi claims the speaker can deliver up to five hours of playback on the built-in 1000mAh cell. It charges via USB-C and can even double as a USB sound card when connected to a computer. There’s also a microSD card slot for direct music playback, so you don’t need a phone at all.

The speaker is also built to last. It has an official IP67 rating, meaning rain, splashes, or dusty trails won’t be an issue. On the connectivity side, it uses Bluetooth 5.3.

Poco confirms a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 phone in the making

Qualcomm finally pulled the curtains off the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, its latest mobile chip that will power Android flagships of 2026. Xiaomi is rolling it out first with the Xiaomi 17 series, which launches later today in China. Now, Poco has also confirmed that its upcoming flagship will ship with the same processor.

In a post today, Poco confirmed that its “next-gen flagship smartphone” will feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The company is still keeping the phone’s actual name a secret, but all signs point toward the upcoming Poco F8 series.

Poco F8 Ultra or Pro?

The Poco F7 Ultra carried the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s predecessor, so by that logic, the new chip should debut on the Poco F8 Ultra. However, not much is known about the device yet.

The Poco F8 Pro is expected to be a rebrand of the Redmi K90 instead. The latter is rumored to feature a 6.59-inch flat RGB OLED LTPS panel with 2K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, along with an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor for security.

As for performance, it could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, which Qualcomm has yet to release. The device is also said to pack a 7,100mAh battery with 100W fast charging. Other details include dual stereo speakers, a premium metal mid-frame, and an x-axis linear motor for improved haptics.

If the Poco F8 is indeed a Redmi K90 rebrand, we can expect these specs to carry over. For now, we’ll have to wait for the official announcement to know exactly which Poco phone will debut with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

Honor X9d launches with 8300mAh battery, IP69K certifications

Honor has officially launched the X9d 5G in Malaysia. The phone’s standout feature is its massive 8,300mAh battery, but the rest of the hardware sits firmly in the mid-range category. It runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset and carries specs that don’t quite match the battery’s headline-grabbing size.

Up front, the phone features a 6.79-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2640 × 1200 pixels. The panel supports HDR-level brightness, peaking at 6000 nits in certain conditions, along with eye-comfort and dynamic-dimming technologies. Honor has also used aluminosilicate glass for extra durability.

The X9d 5G is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chipset paired with an Adreno 810 GPU. On the software side, it ships with Android 15 running Honor’s MagicOS 9.0. Memory options include 12GB RAM with 256GB storage or 12GB RAM with 512GB storage.

The camera setup features a 108MP dual rear system with optical image stabilization, 4K video recording, and 10x digital zoom. On the front, there’s a 16MP selfie camera tucked into a punch-hole cutout.

One of the biggest talking points of the X9d is its 8,300mAh battery. It supports 66W fast wired charging and even offers reverse wired charging to top up other devices.

The X9d 5G also comes with a long list of durability and connectivity features: IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K certifications, drop and dust resistance, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, stereo speakers, and a USB-C port. The device weighs 193 grams and measures 7.76mm thick. Color options include Reddish Brown, Forest Green, Sunrise Gold, and Midnight Black.

In Malaysia, the X9d 5G is priced at MYR 1,499 for the 256GB model and MYR 1,699 for the 512GB version.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 announced with 20% higher performance, 35% higher efficiency, and new 5G modem

Qualcomm has taken the wraps off its latest mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, during its annual Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii. The new chip is positioned as a significant leap over last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, which powered devices like the Galaxy S25 Ultra and OnePlus 13 (review). With significant gains in CPU, GPU, and AI performance, the Gen 5 is set to power Android phones from over a dozen brands, including Xiaomi, iQOO, OnePlus, Honor, ROG, Nubia, Oppo, Realme, Poco, Redmi, RedMagic, Samsung, Sony, Vivo, and ZTE.

What’s changed

At the heart of the chip is Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon CPU, featuring a prime core clocked at up to 4.6GHz. Qualcomm claims a 20% performance boost and up to 35% better efficiency. Early Geekbench results from devices like the standard Xiaomi 17 back this up, showing scores of 3,705 in single-core and 11,228 in multi-core tests—comparable to Apple’s A19 Pro in single-core and slightly ahead in multi-core.

The Adreno GPU sees a 23% jump in graphics performance, with higher clock speeds aimed at smooth ray-traced gaming. AI capabilities also receive a major bump, with the Hexagon NPU promising 37% more throughput for on-device AI tasks, including generative editing. Camera performance should benefit too, with improvements in Qualcomm’s Spectra ISP.

iPhone 17 Pro Max (Aluminum) vs Galaxy S25 Ultra (Titanium): Drop test highlights durability trade-offs

Durability is always a hot topic when new flagships launch, and this year the conversation has centered on Apple’s switch back to aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Samsung, on the other hand, has stuck with titanium on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. A new drop test from YouTube channel PhoneBuff puts the two side by side to see how the materials hold up in real-world falls.

The test used a robotic drop rig to ensure consistency, dropping both phones from 1 and 1.5 meters onto a rough sidewalk-like surface. First up was a drop on the back. Both devices cracked, but in different ways. The S25 Ultra’s rigid titanium frame transferred shock across the entire glass panel, resulting in widespread shattering and even damage around the cameras. The iPhone’s softer aluminum frame absorbed some of the impact, limiting cracks mostly to the smaller glass section, leaving its cameras intact.

Corner drops told a different story. The Galaxy’s titanium held firm with only light scuffing, while the iPhone dented more noticeably—evidence of aluminum’s softer nature. On face-down drops, both screens broke, though Apple’s Ceramic Shield showed some improvement compared to previous models.

At the higher 1.5-meter drops, damage became more severe. The S25 Ultra’s rear glass and camera lens covers were almost completely shattered, while the iPhone picked up additional cracks but still managed to keep its camera lenses intact on the outside.

Apple has previously warned that vibrations—like those from high-powered motorcycle engines—can affect iPhone cameras, and that seems to show here as well. Although the lenses appeared fine on the surface, the main camera lost its ability to focus after the impact.

PhoneBuff scored Samsung slightly ahead overall, but called the result a near tie: aluminum absorbs impacts better across surfaces, while titanium is tougher at pressure points. The takeaway is clear: neither device is immune to drops, and at these prices, a good case remains the best insurance.

Asus teases PCIe power breakthrough: 250W GPUs without the cable clutter

PC builders have long struggled with the mess of wires that snake across their systems, especially the bulky GPU power connectors. Asus is now hinting at a solution that could clean up builds dramatically: graphics cards powered directly through the PCIe slot, no visible cables required.

Asus has already pushed toward tidier setups with its BTF (Back to the Future) motherboards, which move connectors to the rear of the board and can feed up to 600W to certain Asus GPUs via a port near the PCIe slot.

The company’s new concept goes a step further. By modifying the PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, the motherboard can deliver up to 250W—far beyond the standard 75W limit. That means many mid-range cards could run entirely without a separate power cable. To make this possible, Asus routes additional power through an 8-pin connector on the motherboard itself, shifting the cable out of sight while keeping compatibility intact.

A 250W ceiling would be plenty for GPUs like Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, while high-end cards would still need extra connectors. Asus also noted that these prototype GPUs will remain backward-compatible, falling back to traditional 8-pin connectors if installed in non-BTF motherboards.
