Redmi Note 9 Series(China) teardown reveals Camera, Cooling mechanism, & more

Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 9 Series in China yesterday. The lineup has two 5G devices- Redmi Note9 5G, Note9 Pro 5G, and a Note9 4G version. Today, a teardown of the entire series by popular AIO Technology shows the difference between the devices. And as teased by Lei Jun earlier, the devices bring improvements in performance, battery, camera, and more.

Redmi Note 9 5G launch date is November 26-

Rear Shell, Display

As reported by SeekDevice(via GSMArena), the teardown begins by taking off the back covers. As per the reports, both 4G and 5G version of Redmi Note 9 series has plastic shell. And, the 5G version is made to look like AG glass. However, the Note 9 Pro 5G reportedly has a real AG(Anti-Glare)Glass cover.

Talking about the display, we already know that the entire series uses LCD displays. The teardown additionally reveals that all of them are made by TCL CSOT, and have the connecting interface fused to the back of the display. Moving on, the rear shell of 4G and 5G Redmi Note 9 have fingerprint sensors, and antennas attached to them. The 5G version has more antenna contact points which is obvious.

Processor, Cooling

The top cover of the Note 9 series covers the Processor and Camera modules. Among this, the NFC on the Note9 Pro 5G is integrated into the top cover. Beneath it are the SoC along with memory and other components. The 3.5mm audio jack on the 4G version is sorted to the board while others have it integrated. Additionally, all the devices have Infrared sensors(IR blaster) sorted to the board.

Besides, the processors are covered with metal cover, copper foils, and a thermal paste beneath the surface. Removing them reveals the CPU, memory(UFS 2.2, DDR4 RAM). Talking about the cooling, Note9 4G has a heat dissipation film attached to the rear panel but the 5G versions have it on the fuselage(body). While the mid-frame of the devices have more heat dissipation film, the Note9 Pro 5G has a copper tube running in the mid-frame for extra cooling.

Camera module

The camera modules on the 4G and 5G devices are different. The Note9 4G has a rectangle layout and is it at the far left while two 5G devices have a circular layout at the center. Interestingly, the Note9 Pro 5G has an additional protection cover and three more screws to hold the arrangement. The flash on 4G version is fused to the back cover. But the 5G version has it on the layout and the 5G Pro version has it sorted to the board.

The cameras themselves are reportedly similar in the 4G and 5G base version with the difference being a depth of field(2MP depth) and macro lens(2MP Macro) on the former and latter. The Redmi Note9 Pro layout has the biggest 108MP HM2  module and auxiliary sensors.

Battery, and other parts

Removing the big ribbon cable that separates the bottom and upper part reveals the battery. All of them are protected by adhesives. As we all know the batteries on 4G, and two 5G versions are 6,000, 5,000, and 4,820mAh respectively.

The bottom part is also protected by a cover. Removing it reveals the USB-C, Speaker, vibrator, and 3.5mm jack on the 5G versions. The report says the speaker and vibration motor are similar across the models but the 5G versions have a Z-Axis linear motor.

realme RMX3063 appears on India’s BIS Certification; could it belong to the C series?

A few hours ago, we reported on the FCC listing of a new realme Smartphone with model number RMX3063. The device along with another model RMX3061 has already got India’s BIS certification suggesting that it might launch soon in the country.

As tipped by Mukul Sharma, both the RMX3061 and RMX3063 are listed on India’s BIS(Bureau of Indian Standards) website. Previously, these two devices have already received the EEC certification. That said, if you look at the rear design of RMX3063 from the FCC listing, it doesn’t have a cutout for a fingerprint sensor.

Also, the camera layout seems to have only three sensors and an LED flash. And the design is familiar from the earlier budget series like realme C12, C15, and realme Q2i from China. Weirdly enough, the bottom left of the device also seems to have a cutout for what could be a speaker.

All this together with specs such as a 5,000mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n(only 2.4GHz), no 5G support clearly indicates that the realme RMX3063 is a budget series device. While we aren’t able to arrive at a firm guess, we think that it will mostly belong to the C series of realme smartphones. However, realme hasn’t confirmed anything yet regarding RMX3063 or RMX3061, and hence, take this with a pinch of salt.

realme is already on course to launch the X7 series in India and democratize 5G in the country. The device could arrive as soon as January 2021 and if this happens as planned, the RMX3063 might follow suit as a model under the C series. That being said, the RMX3061 is a mystery. However, we do know that both the devices are aimed Globally as they have already been certified by Europe’s EEC, Indonesia’s TKDN, America’s FCC certifications.

Let’s wait for more info as we get closer to the launch. In the meantime, do let us know your guesses on what could the device be in the comments below.

The UK Govt can fine Telecos 10% of their revenues for using Huawei gear under new law

Telecom operators in the UK could now face severe fines after a new law was announced by the Parliament earlier this week. Under the new law, telecos could be fined 10 percent of their revenues for using telecommunications equipment from Huawei.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

The new proposed Telecommunications Security Bill was designed to improve the security in the country’s 5G networking and full fiber infrastructure. As per a CNBC report, the new bill will have telecom carriers ensure that the equipment and software being used at their mast sites and telephone exchanges will have to meet a certain standard. According to the UK Department of Culture, Media, and Sport, “This will be a significant step to protect the U.K. from hostile cyber activity by state actors or criminals. Over the past two years the government has attributed a range of cyber attacks to Russia and China, as well as North Korea and Iranian actors.”

If the bill is approved, the government will be able plan fines on telecom operators that can have them pay 10 percent of turnover or 100,000 Pounds (roughly 133,000 US Dollars) a day if they fail to comply with the new regulations. Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden further added that the bill “will give the U.K. one of the toughest telecoms security regimes in the world and allow us to take the action necessary to protect our networks.”

Huawei

In other words, the bill would also give the government the power to fine any operator found using equipment from blacklisted firms like Huawei in the nation’s 5G infrastructure. Just earlier this year, the UK government stated that carriers would no longer be able to buy telecommunication equipment from Chinese firms by the end of 2020, and will have to replace any existing technology by 2027. Although, a stricter law is also being considered that would force carriers to ban installation of Huawei 5G equipment by 2021.

Apple to use its own 5G ‘iPhone 13’ modem in its 2021 iPad Pro: Report

Sources from with the Apple supply chain have revealed that the company is planning on making its own mmWave 5G modem for its next iPhone series, which might even be ready to be used on the 2021 iPad Pro.

Apple

For those unaware, Apple is rumored to launch new OLED iPad Pro models in the second half of next year. Furthermore, the new iPads are also expected to feature support for 5G networking, and a new report suggests that the Cupertino based giant will be using its own 5G modem for the new iPad Pro. A 5G iPad Pro has been rumored for a while now but the Coronavirus pandemic had reportedly push the launch date back by a year. And now, new reports suggests that the 2021 iPad Pros will feature 5G modem, which has been developed in house.

Notably, the supply chain is also expecting to see an increase in demand for 5G mmWave Antenna in Package (AiP) modules, after the launch of the iPhone 12 series, as per an AppleInsider report. Apple is even planning on developing its own 5G mmWave AiP. Rumors had also pointed at the company replacing the Qualcomm 5G modems for its own for the iPhone 13 series. Although, Apple might be extending its development to also include its own 5G modem in the 2021 iPad Pro. However, this goes against a previous report from ours that stated that the company would continue to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem till 2024.

Apple iPad Pro 2020

The company could be working on its own RF-FEM (RF front end module) as part of that process. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report and we don’t have any official confirmation apart from sources from within the supply chain. While the reports might have arrived from known sources, it is still too early to rely on such reports as concrete evidences. So stay tuned for more updates.

Samsung teases future foldable devices with triple folds and rollable displays

Samsung Electronics was one of the first companies in the world to launch a foldable smartphone commercially. Since then, the company has launched other foldable handsets as well, and now, it is hinting at the possible future forms of such devices, which may feature a triple folding screen or a rollable display.

Samsung

The South Korean tech giant only revealed the designs as concepts at the moment, so it is still unsure if the company is actually working on such devices. Although, the company had previously patented a Galaxy foldable smartphone with a ‘Z’ shaped triple fold display. So, there is still a good change that the company is actually working on this handset or is at least considering the design, as per a TechSina report. However, this is still speculation so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

Looking at the triple folding smartphone Samsung shared, its design resembles a patent we had reported on last month, which was reportedly for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The other device that the company hinted was a rollable display gadget. This product essentially has a long cylindrical body, which houses the flexible rolled up display that can be unfurled from. The image shared by the company reveals that the product is more likely to be aimed towards professionals and other that require a portable device with a large display.

Samsung

Unfortunately, we do not have a lot to go on at the moment, and Samsung has refrained from divulging any additional information regarding these devices either. Although, it is indicative that the company does at least have such innovative designs in mind and we might soon see such launches sometime in the near future. So stay tuned.

Huawei P50 series to feature liquid lenses with a millisecond focusing time: Report

Huawei is apparently pushing for innovation again with its upcoming flagship series. A new report has suggested that the company’s Huawei P50 series will feature liquid lens camera technology, which have a focusing time of just milliseconds.

Huawei Liquid Lens Camera Module 02
Huawei patent for a liquid lens camera module

According to a MyDrivers report, sources believe that these new liquid lens technology will be mass produced and commercialized next year. Furthermore, the new lenses will primarily used for the telephoto lenses, and the Chinese tech giant would also launch related products as well. The company has been known to be working with liquid lens technology for a while, with it applying a patent for the same back in 25th December 2019, which was published earlier this year in April.

Earlier this year, we had also covered a patent that suggested that the Huawei P50 series will sport a ‘Liquid Lens Camera Module.’ Notably, this new lens offers certain advantages like extremely fast focusing speeds, which can level in just milliseconds similar to a human eye with an accuracy rate of almost 100 percent. To explain the liquid lens technology in brief, while traditional lenses achieves zooming and focusing by adjusting the focal length between two fixed focal length lenses, the liquid lens have electricity passed through it to change the shape of the liquid to control imaging.

This, in turn, would improve the time it takes to focus on a particular subject and could even help with the optical image stabilization (OIS) as well. If the Chinese tech giant manages to make the liquid lens technology more durable, then its reliability would also be improved under abnormal conditions or after impacts or accidental drops. Importunately, this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.

China surpasses US for the first time in artificial intelligence patent filings

China and the United States are competing with each other to be the leading player in the next-generation technology solutions. Now, for the first time, China has surpassed the United States in terms of patent applications related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The development was revealed by Li Yuxiao, Deputy Head of the Chinese Academy of Cyberspace Studies at the 7th World Internet Conference (WIC), reports SCMP. With this, China is now bolstering its position of being a leader in AI.

The United States, under the presidency of Donald Trump, has targeted Chinese companies by imposing several trade restrictions and banning some of the companies by categorizing them as a national security risk, without providing any proofs for the claim.

As a result, Taiwanese manufacturers started moving some of the production away from China to other countries like India, Vietnam, and Mexico as they anticipated similar actions for their production lines.
