Design

Redmi Note 9 and 9 Pro feature a similar design, but the latter is more beautiful and it has a slightly better build quality. The punch hole on the Redmi Note 9 is placed on the upper left corner, while on the Note 9 Pro it is placed centrally. The Redmi Note 9 Pro has a smaller camera module and a glass back protected by Gorilla Glass 5, so it wins the design and builds quality comparisons. But you should note that Note 9 Pro has bigger dimensions due to its wider display. Redmi 9 looks more outdated due to its waterdrop notch, but its rear side is more elegant.

Display

With Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9, and Note 9 Pro, you get average IPS displays. Nothing special, closer to entry-level phones than flagships. The Redmi Note 9 and Note 9 Pro have a better panel since they feature a higher brightness and a slightly better quality, but the differences with the Redmi 9 are just marginal. Note that Note 9 Pro has a wider display than Redmi Note 9 and Redmi 9 (6.67 inches vs 6.53 inches).

Specs & Software

The hardware department is the main difference that people look for when they evaluate these three devices. The Redmi 9 is fueled by the Helio G80 chipset, while the Redmi Note 9 has an Helio G85 under the hood. As you probably understood from the name, there is not a huge performance difference between Redmi 9 and Redmi Note 9. But the situation is totally different when it comes to the Redmi Note 9 Pro: this handset sports a more powerful Snapdragon 720G SoC and up to 6 GB of RAM paired with 128 GB of UFS 2.1 native storage. These are all Redmi phones, so you get the same operating system and the same user interface: Android 10 customized by MIUI 11.

Camera

Redmi Note 9 and 9 Pro are similar in terms of camera performance. They both feature a 48 MP main sensor and a quad rear camera, but the Note 9 Pro has a 5 MP macro sensor instead of a 2 MP macro sensor. That is just a marginal difference that does not impact the overall photo quality. Redmi 9 is way inferior because it features an entry-level 13 MP main sensor. So, you should go for the Redmi 9 only if cameras are not your priority. We can tell you the same if we talk about front cameras: Note 9 Pro is the best with its 16 MP snapper, Redmi Note 9 comes right after with its 13 MP lens, and Redmi 9 lags behind with an 8 MP selfie camera.

Battery

Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9, and Redmi Note 9 Pro pack exactly the same battery with a 5020 mAh capacity. But the Note 9 Pro has a more efficient chipset since it is built with a better production process (8 nm vs 12 nm). That is why Note 9 Pro lasts more on a single charge. An interesting advantage of the Redmi Note 9 is the reverse charging support.

Price

Redmi 9 is expected to be priced Rs. 8,999 in India and it will launch on August 31. Redmi Note 9 is priced Rs. 11,999, while Note 9 Pro is priced Rs. 13,999. If you can spend more, go for Note 9 Pro without thinking twice: it has a way better chipset with lower energy consumption. If you can not spend so much, choose the Redmi Note 9 only if you care about cameras, otherwise, go for the Redmi 9 since it offers a higher value for money.

Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro leak reveals its design and features

Huawei recently announced the Watch Fit but it still has one more smartwatch in the pipeline scheduled to launch this year. That watch is the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro and a new leak has revealed what it will look like.

Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro main

The source of the leak is the Turkish website, Huaweiailesi. As seen in the images posted below, the Watch GT 2 Pro will keep the circular dial design of its predecessors.

The watch will come in two variants – Classic and Sport – with the former available in Nebula Gray and the latter available in Night Black. Both watches have a slimmer and more classy design when compared to the standard Huawei Watch GT 2. There is no tachymeter this time and the lugs are larger but there are still only two buttons on the right side.

One of the images shows the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro will support voice calls which should mean there will be an LTE version. Another image shows the watch has water resistance. We can also see Huawei is promising a 2-week battery life for this model too.

The Watch GT 2 Pro is expected to come with lots of new features including support for wireless charging. There is an image that shows the phone being charged by a Huawei phone and there is another of the wireless charging station for the watch. The charging station is shown to have a USB-C cable.

Huawei is expected to launch the Watch GT 2 Pro alongside the Mate 40 series but it also has a launch event in China on September 10 whose poster teases the launch of a smartwatch, so there is a possibility of the smartwatch launching on that day.

Apple finally terminates Epic Games’ developer account

Apple has finally gone ahead with the threat to terminate Epic Games’ developer account. The imbroglio between the two companies began when Epic went against the App Store rules by incorporating its own direct payment option on its popular game Fortnite.Epic Games

Apple had already removed Fortnite from the App Store for a few weeks since the dispute began but left other titles by Epic Games like Battle Breakers and Infinity Blade Stickers‌ With the new development where Epic’s developer account has been terminated, all other Epic Games titles have been yanked off the App Store. A search for Epic Games in the store‌ now returns nothing while on the web, the Epic Games developer account is blank.

The good thing i that if you already downloaded Fortnite, the appcontinues to work but you won’t be ale to any of the new Marvel-themed Season 4 content.

A statement released by Apple confirmed the account has been removed and expressed disappointment that the termination had to happen.

“We are disappointed that we have had to terminate the Epic Games account on the ‌App Store‌. We have worked with the team at Epic Games for many years on their launches and releases. The court recommended that Epic comply with the ‌App Store‌ guidelines while their case moves forward, guidelines they’ve followed for the past decade until they created this situation. Epic has refused. Instead, they repeatedly submit Fortnite updates designed to violate the guidelines of the ‌App Store‌. This is not fair to all other developers on the ‌App Store‌ and is putting customers in the middle of their fight. We hope that we can work together again in the future, but unfortunately, that is not possible today,” the statement read.

There will be no HarmonyOS smartphones in 2020, confirms Huawei CEO

HarmonyOS, the self-developed operating system by Huawei has been in development for 3 years. Last year, the company officially announced its first version at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE (HDC) 2019.  At the 2020 edition of this conference, the firm is expected to unveil its second version. Rumors said that the Chinese telecom giant will release a smartphone running it by the end of this year. But now, Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group officially confirms that there will be no such smartphone from the company this year.

HarmonyOS

Yu Chengdong, commonly known as Richard Yu recently attended Yabuli Forum Qingdao Summit (via Sina). At this meeting, he was questioned regarding Huawei smartphone powered by HarmonyOS.

To this, he replied that there are no plans to release such device this year. But that does not mean it will not release next year. In other words, the executive reiterated his HarmonyOS announcement speech from last year.

In that, he mentioned that Android is their choice of operating system on smartphones due to the ecosystem and partners. But they will continue to develop and release devices with HarmonyOS in order to be self-reliant in the long run.

Vincent Yang, Senior Vice President at Huawei made a similar statement last year that they will maintain a single ecosystem with Android. But HarmonyOS will continue to exist as plan B in case of a worst-case scenario.

Also, since the CEO was interviewed in the hallway of the venue of the Summit, he did not respond properly to the chip problem. But he did say that they are still looking for a solution.

Currently, Huawei’s operating system can be only found on its smart TVs. But according to the roadmap shared by the company last year, HarmonyOS 2.0 will support PC, cars, and smart wearables. This version is expected to go official at HDC 2020, which is scheduled for September 10-12.

Though there will be no smartphone running HarmonyOS this year, we can still look forward to the rumored Mate Watch featuring it.

New 8K and 4K Xiaomi Mi TVs receive 3C certification; tipped to feature panels from LG Display

Apart from smartphones, Xiaomi is also known for its smart TVs, mostly popular in markets like China and India. Recently, to commemorate its 10th anniversary, the company launched Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition. Now, the company is all set to unveil new 8K and 4K Mi TV models in China as per the 3C certification bureau.

Xiaomi Mi TV L82M6-8K L82M6-4K 3C Certification

The certifications of the upcoming new Xiaomi televisions were shared by Digital Chat Station (数码闲聊站), a well-known tipster on Weibo. According to him, these TVs will use panels from LG Display.

Going by the name of the model numbers of these TVs, they will be marketed under the same series in 82-inches but with different screen resolution – 4K and 8K respectively.

Model Number
Resolution
Power Rating
L82M6-4K 4K (3840 x 2160) 220V~, 50/60Hz, 500W
L82M6-8K 8K (7680 × 4320) 100-240V~, 50/60Hz, 700W

Due to the difference in their panel resolution, their power rating are dissimilar, however, features such as software (MIUI for TV), connectivity & ports, speakers, and the rest should be common between them.

What’s unknown about these TVs is their panel type. Since LG Display doesn’t supply QLED panels, these forthcoming Mi TVs should either feature OLED or LED-backlit LCD. Also, this goes in line with a report from July, which stated 19 companies will launch a number of OLED TVs with LG Display panel in the second half of the year.

Currently, Xiaomi sells two OLED TVs (standard 65-inch 4K and transparent 55-inch 1080p) under its Mi TV Master Series (aka Mi TV LUX). Both of them are limited to China priced at 12,999 yuan ($1,893) and 49,999 yuan ($7,283) respectively.

Hence, it appears that India could be one of the first markets to receive the rumored Galaxy Z Fold Lite foldable smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Lite support page

In the recent past, the device was spotted at the database of the Wi-Fi Alliance. The original Galaxy Fold came with CPI-clad display which is weaker than the Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) layer available on the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It is speculated that the Galaxy Z Fold Lite will have a CPI-clad screen.

The Galaxy Z Fold Lite that is rumored to be codenamed as Winner 2 could be coming with an aluminum and glass chassis. The Snapdragon 865 chipset could be powering the device, but it is unlikely to carry support for 5G support. It may come with a price tag of $1,099. The other specs of the Galaxy Z Fold Lite are present under wraps.

Realme announces new features for “Remote Guard” parental control settings in realme UI

Earlier handsets from realme ran ColorOS but then, with the release of Android 10, the brand introduced its own skin based on ColorOS called realme UI. The company has been improving it by adding new features based on user suggestions since its initial release. Continuing it, the brand announces new features for “Remote Guard”.

Realme UI Remote Guard Parental Control Settings

In case you do not know, most Chinese Android skins on smartphones offer parental control options. With the help of these settings, parents and guardians can monitor their children/wards.

OPPO introduced its implementation called “Remote Guard” with the release of ColorOS 6. This feature was inherited by realme UI since its base is ColorOS after all. But instead of OPPO, realme becomes the first to announce new features for this service on its Chinese community forum (via PiunikaWeb).

According to the post by the brand, the app for Remote Guard has been now redesigned. Users can now add multiple guardians to their wards and cam even provide vital family information. Also, contact numbers of guardians can be now set as SOS contact so that wards can make calls easily in the event of an emergency.

Since Remote Guard now supports multiple guardians, the app has a new screen, which shows the person in charge of the ward at the given moment. Further, the guardians can also monitor their ward’s smartphone usage. They even have access to a dashboard with handset usage statistics just like Googe Digital Wellbeing.

Parents and guardians can also limit their ward’s smartphone usage by blocking access to apps and games. Also, the service automatically blocks fraudulent calls and SMS spam Last but not least, guardians can even know the whereabouts of their ward with real-time location tracking.

Anyway, as we mentioned in the beginning, most Chinese OEMs include parental control settings in their Android skin like realme. But they don’t provide them in the global version of their mobile software. Hence, there’s less chance for the above-mentioned features to be made available in markets other than China.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE branding confirmed along with the existence of 5G variant

Samsung is reported to start shipping Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) aka Galaxy S20 Lite in October. But ahead of it, the handset had already leaked in 3D CAD renders and official press renders. Even some of its specs as well as price are out now. Adding to that, the firm itself now confirms the branding and variants of this handset on its official website.

Samsung Bulgaria Galaxy S20 FE 5G Branding

Earlier this year, Samsung introduced Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite as the toned-down versions of its 2019 flagship smartphones. Hence, their successors were thought to have a similar marketing name. But the reports, as well as leaks, have been saying otherwise and now, that turns out to be true.

According to YouTube Premium promo page (via SamMobile) on Samsung Bulgaria website, the toned-down Galaxy S20 series smartphone will be officially marketed as “Galaxy S20 FE”. Also, the page confirms this phone to arrive in two variants – 4G and 5G just like other Galaxy flagship smartphones released this year.

For those unaware, Galaxy S10 Lite only comes in a single 4G variant powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 in all the regions. Hence, its successor has been one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2020. But now, it seems like there could be an Exynos 990 version of this device going by the existence of “Galaxy S20 FE” and “Galaxy S20 FE 5G”.

Anyway, according to previous leaks and reports, the Galaxy S20 FE will feature Snapdragon 865, 3.3mm punch-hole, 120Hz refresh rate, IP68 certification,  12MP (primary) + 12MP (ultra-wide) + 8MP (3x telephoto) triple camera setup, 32MP selfie camera, six colors and ~$750 price tag.

Redmi Note 8 unit falls from an 8th floor apartment and still worked fine

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 series released last year was one of the company’s top-selling model with over 30 million units sold as at May 2020. One reason why fans found the Note 8 as a worthy upgrade over the Redmi Note 7 is the upgrade both in the hardware and software with a powerful camera out. The Redmi Note 8 also has a good build quality and that has been confirmed by a recent incident.Redmi Note 8

A Mi fan recently shared the story of his Redmi Note 8 unit which fell into a pool of water after the phone was mistakenly dropped from the 8th floor of an apartment building. Surprisingly, even though the screen was shattered and water got into the camera chamber, the touch operation still worked fine. The fuselage was also bent, turning the phone to a “curved screen” model.Redmi Note 8

Xiaomi’s Founder and Chairman, Lei Jun also shared the post, extolling the quality of Redmi Note 8.Redmi Note 8

The phone packs a 6.3-inch waterdrop screen and is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor paired with up to 6GB of RAM. Segway teases the launch of the Segway eMoped C in the U.S.

Xiaomi‘s ecological chain company Segway-Ninebot recently held a celebratory event to mark the completion of the first recorded trans-America electric scooter trip. The trip was sponsored by Segway and carried out by Graham Pollard with six of Segway’s Ninebot KickScooter MAX electric scooters.

At the event, the company also teased the Segway eMoped C which will be introduced to the US market soon. The eMoped C was first launched in China as Ninebot C30 last month as the cheapest bike in the brand’s lineup. It comes as a true moped with functional pedals.
