Huawei and ZTE likely to be kicked from India’s 5G Trials

While India is gearing up for its 5G trials, Chinese telecommunications giant like Huawei and ZTE might not be allowed to participate. With the political relations between India and China being strained, Chinese vendors might find their networking operations difficult if not completely shut out in India.

Huawei

For those unaware, clashes along the Indo-China border in recent months have left both sides wary of another, with the Indian government already taking action by banning Chinese apps and stopping shipments as well. Furthermore, the government will also be applying amendments to its investment rules on 23rd July 2020 to restrict bidders from nation it shares land borders with, due to national security reasons, as per a Bloomberg report.

At the moment, the Indian Ministry of Communications will restart its pending discussions regarding approvals for 5G trials by private companies like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea, which were delayed due to the nationwide lockdown caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The government is also actively trying to dissuade carriers from buying Chinese equipment.

Huawei

India’s recent actions are also in line with the US, UK, and even Australia, which have all recently flagged Chinese companies as potential national security threats. While Huawei was originally allowed to participate in Indian 5G trails earlier this year, that has since changed after military clashes which had 20 Indian soldier casualties back on 20th June 2020. So stay tuned as we will be providing more updates on the matter.

Google forced OnePlus out of a Fortnite launcher deal: Epic Games

Epic Games has alleged that Google had forced OnePlus out of a Fortnite launcher deal. The news arrives just as the known game publisher is suing the search giant for taking out Fortnite from its Google Play Store.

Google

According to Epic Games, Google forced the Chinese smartphone vendor to break off a deal that would have had a special Fortnite game launcher premiere on OnePlus smartphones. Furthermore, the publisher accused that Google also demanded that another Android smartphone manufacturer, LG, also cancels its plans for a similar deal as well.

Reportedly, Google pressured OnePlus against the deal, after it expressed “concerns” regarding Epic have the ability to bypass the Play Store. Additionally, Epic also said that the deal with OnePlus would have had a special launcher available worldwide, but the search giant “demanded that OnePlus not implement its agreement with Epic with the limited exception of mobile devices sold in India.”

Google

Epic Games went on to state that the company “prevented LG from pre-installing the Epic Games app on LG devices,” since LG had a contract “to block side downloading off Google Play Store this year.” Unfortunately, Google has declined to comment on the matter, when contacted by The Verge. Fortnite came to Play Store after all such dealing fell through, but was kicked out earlier this week since it allowed users to pay for the in-game currencies directly to Epic rather than through Google’s Play Store. The publisher is suing both Apple and Google for this, so stay tuned as we will keep you updated on the matter.

WeChat downloads spiked in the US after Trump issued app ban

The WeChat app and its encrypted alternative Signal saw a spike in downloads in the US, after the Trump administration passed an executive order to ban the application earlier this month.

According to a Reuters report, the Tencent owned app saw a rise in downloads, as users rushed to install the application before it completely disappeared from the app stores in the country. Similarly, Signal also saw a similar trend, especially in China, as it is an encrypted alternative, which owned by non-profit Signal Foundation. The report stated that the WeChat app downloads rose by 41 percent in a six day average in the United States when compared to the previous week.

This occurred immediately after the Trump Administration threatened to ban the app last week. Notably, the Signal app download rose by 30 percent in the US app stores and by a whopping 90 percent in the Chinese app stores. A Sensor Tower analyst stated that, “Not only are alternatives like WhatsApp and Telegram officially blocked in China, but Signal has an inherent advantage in that it’s well known for being strongly encrypted.”

WeChat

Furthermore, WeChat users have also turned towards other Tencent owned chat apps like QQ, since the ban did not specifically include this platform. As such, the downloads for this app have also tripled in the past week. At the moment, Apple and other US giants are pushing back against the move from the government, citing various busines losses that would occur if it is enforced. Although, it remains to be seen how this event develops, so stay tuned.

Huawei patent reveals a Foldable Smartphone with a stylus and Sub display

A new Huawei patent has recently surfaced online and details a new foldable smartphone, which arrives with a stylus and a sub display. With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 just being launched a while back, this could be Huawei’s answer as the Mate X2.

Huawei

Huawei had filed the design patent back in 2019 with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which got approved and published earlier today (14th August 2020). The notable aspect of the foldable smartphone is the fact that it features a stylus and has a sub display right next to the primary screen, which follows an inward folding design.

Looking at the detailed images provided by LetsGoDigital, the bezels around the primary screen are thin, including the one next to the secondary display. This sub display is narrow and long, covering the entire length on the left side, and features two cut outs for a dual front facing camera system. This entire setup is slightly raised, providing space for the stylus as well. On the rear, a quad camera setup can be found.

Huawei

While the sub display and camera module portion are rather thick, the portion with the flexible display is rather thin. This allows the device to fold right up till the sub display, matching it in overall thickness when folded. Notably, no physical buttons can be observed on the device, which might suggest the functionality of its smaller display. Unfortunately, the patent might just be Huawei’s attempt to cover all bases and they may never really develop such a device, but we would have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure. So stay tuned.

Apple pushes back against WeChat ban, Chinese users would rather give up iPhone than the app: Survey

Recently, we had reported on the Trump administration banning the WeChat app, a popular Chinese social media platform. This new US sanction would force Apple to remove the app from its App Store, which was expected to cause it to lose a significant part of its sales in China. Now, a new report reveals that Apple plans to push back on the ban while a survey found that 95 percent of Chinese users would rather give up iPhone than lose WeChat.

Apple

At the moment, it is unknown if the ban on the WeChat app is strictly restricted to just the US App Store or the global one. Tencent, the parent company of WeChat, stated that it believed that the ban is only applicable in the US but is seeking clarity. The cause for this unsure atmosphere around the new order is due to its vague working, which states banning any transaction related to WeChat.

According to a Bloomberg survey, 95 percent of the 1.2 million Chinese Apple users said that they would rather switch to an Android device than use an iPhone without WeChat. A HongKong user stated that banning WeChat would make an iPhone into “electronic trash.” Another stated that his “family in China are all used to WeChat and all our communication is on the platform.”

Apple

A Wall Street Journal report also revealed that over a dozen companies including Apple, Ford, Walmart, and Disney are pushing back against the ban. In a call to the White House, the known brands detailed the adverse consequences that a ban on WeChat would have on their businesses. With WeChat being used to payments, e-commerce and marketing as well, Tencent stated that any device without it would be “extremely hard to sell” in China.
