The Mystic Green Galaxy Note20 is a pretty sight

The Galaxy Note20’s spec sheet leaked yesterday and it revealed the phone will come in three colorways. While the leak included images of the Mystic Bronze and Mystic Bronze variant, the Mystic Green variant was missing in action. Now, a render of the green variant has surfaced on the web.

The render was posted on Twitter by Roland Quandt (@rquandt) and he confirms again that the phone will be available in both 4G and 5G variants. The phone has a Mint (Green) paint job with a matching S Pen. The color looks really good and may as well be my favorite of three variants.

Galaxy Note20 Mystic Green

The Galaxy Note20 will pack a 6.7-inch FHD+ 60Hz Super AMOLED display with a Snapdragon 865 Plus or Exynos 990 processor. It will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in Europe while other markets should get it in other configurations.

Samsung has put triple rear cameras on the back in a 12MP + 12MP + 64MP configuration with up to 30x digital zoom. The phone will also have a 4300mAh battery with support for fast wired and wireless charging. It will also have NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 6, and AKG-tuned stereo speakers.

Mi 9 SE, Mi CC9 Pro and Redmi 10X/10X Pro get MIUI 12 stable update in China

Ever since Xiaomi announced MIUI 12 in late April, it has been seeding out weekly beta updates to almost all the eligible devices in the company’s home country. Additionally, the firm has been also releasing stable beta as well as stable builds to a number of handsets worldwide. Currently, the smartphone maker has begun to roll out MIUI 12 stable update to Mi 9 SE, Mi CC9 Pro, Redmi 10X and Redmi 10X Pro in China.

MIUI 12 Logo Mars

The Mi 9 SE is the oldest phone out of these four devices to receive MIUI 12 stable update. However, the builds are based on Android 10 for all the handsets. It is worth noting that the two Redmi phones launched with latest Android out of the box, whereas the world’s first smartphone with 108MP camera got this update in May.

As for MIUI 12 update, as all of them have AMOLED display, they also get support for new AOD+ along with Super Wallpapers. Further, the stable update for both the Mi devices come with build number 12.0.1.0, whereas the build number for Redmi devices is 12.0.2.0.

Having said that, it is not sure when the same update will be available for the global version of Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro (Mi Note 10) and Mi 9 SE.

TrendForce tips Huawei to lead 5G phone shipments in 2020 followed by Apple

Despite the myriad of challenges the US is throwing Huawei‘s way, the Chinese company has continued to blaze the trail in terms of smartphone market share. Research firm TrendForce project that the Chinese company will lead the 5G smartphone market this year against all odds.

5G development has been rapid in China due to the government’s aggressive approach in proliferating 5G base stations and network coverage across the country. Thus, 5G rolled out in China earlier than in other countries. This also resulted in Chinese smartphone manufacturers releasing 5G phones earlier than competitors. Chinese OEMs hold a 75% share in the global 5G smartphone market in 1H20.

TrendForce indicates that, aside from the various Android-based smartphone brands, Apple’s new models will also join the ranks of 5G smartphones. Given the total smartphone production forecast of 1.24 billion units in 2020, 5G handset production is expected to reach 235 million units, an 18.9% penetration rate.

Chinese brands are expected to occupy four out of the top six spots of 5G smartphone brands ranked by production volume. An analysis of the projected top six smartphone brands ranked by 5G smartphone production volume shows Huawei firmly sitting in the first place. Huawei has shifted its focus to the domestic Chinese market under the impact of U.S. sanctions and in preparation for China’s active 5G commercialization efforts. The company is expected to produce about 74 million 5G smartphones this year.

Apple’s yearly 5G smartphone production is expected to total about 70 million units in 2020, which lands the company in second place. However, 5G functions will increase the production cost of smartphones accordingly. If Apple decides to directly reflect this added cost on the retail prices of the iPhone 12 series, it may lower its consumers’ willingness to purchase, in turn affecting the sales performances of the new iPhones.

Samsung has been experiencing setbacks in the Chinese market in recent years. Although these setbacks have not seriously affected its global market share and revenue, they have considerably slowed Samsung’s growth in the 5G smartphone market. Samsung’s 5G smartphone production this year is forecasted at 29 million units, placing the company in third place globally. Vivo, OPPO (including OnePlus, OPPO, and Realme) and Xiaomi are tied for fourth place.

As Huawei’s aggressive domestic expansion in the past few years has compressed the market shares of the three brands in the Chinese market, they have been actively focusing on increasing overseas market shares to maintain their yearly production performances. Vivo, OPPO, and Xiaomi’s yearly 5G smartphone production volumes are projected to reach about 21 million, 20 million, and 19 million units, respectively.

Mid-to-low end 5G chipsets released by AP suppliers are expected to raise the penetration rate of 5G smartphones in 2021. MediaTek is expected to lead this push with the company rumoured to announce its low-end 5G chipset later this month.

Microsoft Surface Duo hits FCC, May launch earlier than expected

The Mircosoft Surface Duo is one of the most anticipated devices of 2020. The Redmond-based company showcased it first in October of 2019. It is expected to release sometime in Holiday season of this year. Since its initial unveiling, the product has been officially teased multiple times, in addition to being spotted on certification bureaus. Now, the dual-screen device makes its appearance on FCC as well, which is usually considered as the last hurdle before launch.

The upcoming Microsoft Surface Duo listing on FCC was first spotted by Droid Life According to the publication, the Federal Communications Commission tested both the screens of the device along with its hinge. As usual, the bureau also tested the device’s network capability.

Although one of the tests mentions NFC, Windows Central reports that retail units will not have support for tap and pay. Also, it notes that it could be made available for purchase before the Holiday season as the confidentiality agreement is until October 29. That’s because, after this date, FCC will publicly release the pictures of the Surface Duo along with its manual and Microsoft surely don’t want its product to get leaked ahead of the official release.

According to previous leaks, the first Android device in the Surface lineup will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with 6GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. It will spot dual 5.6-inch 1800×1350 resolution AMOLED displays with 401 ppi and 4:3 aspect ratio.

Other features include single 11MP camera, fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C port, nano-SIM card slot, support for Surface Pen, Android 10, and a 3,460 mAh battery.

Well, in the same price range, you can actually get several other handsets with amazing specifications and the 5G connectivity. We chose two of them for this comparison in order to establish if OnePlus Nord is the best option out there. If you want to know the differences between OnePlus Nord, Moto G 5G Plus, and Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite as well as our opinion about them, go ahead with this comparison and you will not be left disappointed.

Design

The OnePlus Nord provides the most premium design. It is equipped with a glass back and it has a punch-hole display, as well as a smaller camera module for a more elegant look, in my honest opinion. Moto G 5G Plus has a dual punch hole as well, with two separate holes instead of a pill-shaped hole. But it has a full plastic body, that is why we do not consider it as the most premium device of this comparison. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite is less attractive with its waterdrop notch and it is nothing so special in terms of build quality.

Display

Besides coming with the best design, OnePlus Nord is also equipped with the best display. It is an AMOLED panel with a 6.44-inch diagonal, the HDR10+ certification, and a high 90 Hz refresh rate. It has all the features you would expect from a high-end display. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite has an AMOLED display too, but it lacks a high refresh rate. The Moto G 5G Plus has a 90 Hz refresh rate, but it lacks an AMOLED panel. OnePlus Nord provides both, that is the simple reason why it is better in terms of display. Unfortunately, you do not get a 3.5 mm audio jack on the OnePlus Nord, while the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite and the Moto G 5G Plus have it.

Hardware/Software

At least in its most expensive configuration, OnePlus Nord provides the most advanced hardware side. It is fueled by the Snapdragon 765G paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 2.1 native storage. You get all the power of 5G and very high performance, even though we are still far from real flagships. Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite has a Snapdragon 765G chipset, but just 8 GB of RAM in its higher-end variant. Moto G 5G Plus has a weaker Snapdragon 765 offer slightly inferior CPU and GPU performance than the SD765G. OnePlus Nord and Moto G 5G Plus run Android 10 with a nearly-stock user experience, while Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite has a highly-customized user interface (MIUI 11).

Camera

OnePlus Nord gets the gold medal even for its camera department. It is the only device from this trio to feature OIS for better stabilization. Further, it has better front cameras including a 32 MP main sensor and an 8 MP ultrawide secondary sensor. Moto G 5G Plus and Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite are very close when it comes to cameras, at least in regards of the rear camera setup. On the front side, the Moto G 5G Plus is more interesting since it features a dual ultrawide front camera.

Battery

The bigger 5000 mAh battery of the Moto G 5G Plus makes it a true battery phone able to last two days even with intensive usage. This is the real advantage of the Moto G 5G Plus compared to its rivals. The Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite should be slightly better than OnePlus Nord due to its standard refresh rate, but only testing their software optimizations will give us the definitive answer.

Price

In the global market, OnePlus Nord and Moto G 5G Plus are priced €399/$464 in their base variants, while Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite starts from €369/$429. Despite Moto G 5G Plus provides a way longer battery life, OnePlus Nord wins this comparison thanks to its better display and cameras.

Leaked Realme V5 specs reveal it has a 5000mAh battery and supports 30W fast charging

Earlier today, it was revealed that Realme will be launching a new series of smartphones with the first model arriving as the Realme V5. The announcement included a poster that shows the device, giving us an early look at the design. now some of the specifications of the phone have leaked.

Shared on Weibo by Digital Chat Station, the Realme V5 will have a 6.5-inch 2400 x 1080 display with a hole punch in the top left corner. The device will have a high refresh rate according to the source but it is not specified whether it is 90Hz or 120Hz.

Realme V5 specs

The device will be powered by a 2.0GHz processor which will bring 5G support. The name of the processor is not mentioned but our guess is that it is the Dimensity 800 processor from MediaTek.

Coming to cameras, Realme is said to have put a 16MP camera in front for taking selfies while the rear of the phone is home to a 48MP quad-camera setup that also includes an 8MP camera and two 2MP sensors.

The Realme V5 will pack a pretty big 5000mAh battery with support for 30W Dart Charge so users can recharge in the shortest time possible. The leaker also stated that the device will weigh 194 grams and have a thickness of 9.1 millimeters.

There is no launch date yet for the device but it will be announced first in China before it makes its way to other markets.

Realme issues statement on banned apps and data privacy

Realme has released a press statement regarding the concerns about data privacy and the banned apps that ship with its devices.

In the statement shared on Twitter by CEO, Madhav Sheth, the manufacturer assures its users that it has never shared user data with any entity. However, they will be following the directives of the Indian Government.

Realme says users have the option to remove a pre-installed app. It also adds that it will release an OTA update for all existing models by August to remove the “Clean up Storage” feature. Users that require the feature will have to make do with third-party apps from the Play Store.

Realme also said the upcoming Realme 6i (European Realme 6s) scheduled for release tomorrow and other upcoming smartphones will not ship with any of the banned apps.

The Government of India banned 59 Chinese mobile apps almost a month ago. Some of the apps on the list are pre-installed by phone manufacturers. This has led to queries from users.

Realme’s announcement comes a few weeks after POCO’s own which also passes a similar message about data privacy and removal of banned apps from devices.

Corning’s toughest Gorilla Glass Victus announced, may feature on the Galaxy Note 20!

Corning has over the years built a towering reputation in the business of manufacturing tough glasses for smartphones, laptops, tablets, and wearables. In a bid to offer improved solutions and cement its place as a market leader, the company has officially announced its latest glass technology which represents a breakthrough in the technology. The Gorilla Glass Victus as it is called brings to the table a significantly better drop and scratch performance compared to competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers.Corning Gorilla Glass 6

Durability is one of the key considerations buyers put in perspective before bringing out their wallets. A survey carried out in three of the largest smartphone markets in the world – China, India, and the United States – shows that it is second only to the device brand.

Buyers place it ahead of important features such as screen size, camera quality, and device thinness. Most consumers were willing to pay a premium for improved durability. Also, feedback from more than 90,000 consumers analyzed by Corning shows that the importance of drop and scratch performance has nearly doubled in seven years.

The new Corning Gorilla Glass Victus performed superbly in lab tests. Corning says it achieved drop performance up to 2 meters when dropped onto hard, rough surfaces. This is far ahead of the competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers which typically fail when dropped from less than 0.8 meters. In addition, the Gorilla Glass Victus has up to 2x improvement in scratch resistance compared to the Gorilla Glass 6. While it is up to 4x better than competitive aluminosilicate glasses.

Corning disclosed in the press release that the Gorilla Glass Victus will be adopted first by Samsung in the near future. Thus, speculations are rife that the new glass technology may feature on the Galaxy Note 20. If the Galaxy Note 20 misses on it, then we should be looking at next year’s Galaxy S30 series.

Redmi 10X Pro Liquid Silver is reminiscent of Mi 6 Silver Edition’s mirror finish

Redmi launched the Redmi 10X Pro 5G in late May alongside regular Redmi 10X 5G and Redmi 10X 4G (aka Redmi Note 9) in China. A few days back, the handset’s Liquid Silver color variant went on sale for the first time. At around the same time, the brand’s general manager Lu Weibing revealed that this variant of the phone is difficult to produce.

The recently launched Redmi 10X Pro 5G in Liquid Silver color version is one of a kind. As you can see from the gallery attached above (courtesy of Digital Chat Station on Weibo), this device looks unique than any other phone available in the market at its price.

The Redmi smartphone not only looks silvery but also mimics a mirror. It is reminiscent of Xiaomi  Mi 6 Mercury Silver Edition and Sony Xperia XZ Premium Luminous Chrome color variant, the device which won the Best New Smartphone of MWC 2017 award.

In fact, there have been few phones in this color in the market according to Redmi GM Lu Weibing. He says that manufacturing phones in this particular silver color is a complicated process. The yield is less, which in turn results in high-cost for production.

redmi 10x pro silver lu weibing comment

This clearly means that Redmi 10X Pro 5G Liquid Silver variant will be only available in a limited quantity like the Mi 6 even though the brand executive did not mention it in his Weibo post

Anyway, it is worth noting that this version of the handset costs only 2,599 yuan ($371) for 8GB + 1256GB storage configuration. On the other hand, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium debuted for $799, which is more than double the price of the Redmi phone.

Even Xiaomi’s Mi 6 Mercury Silver was costlier at 3,999 yuan for 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. What’s interesting is that this handset was recently up for sale in China for 19,999 yuan ($2,854) after three years from its release.

Nubia Watch is now available for reservation, will launch on July 28

Nubia Watch is now available for reservation online. The new smartwatch from the brand will launch on 28th July 2020 and for those interested, you can reserve one on JD.com.

Nubia

While the Nubia Watch does not feature a camera unlike the Nubia Alpha, it does also have a flexible display. Its promotional image also carried the term “urban adventurer,” which might be indicative of certain high durability features or its design. Unfortunately, the finer details or pricing of the upcoming smartwatch are currently unknown.

Nubia

Although, a few educated guesses can be made. The Nubia Alpha was released in Beijing at a price of 3,499 Yuan (roughly $499) for the eSIM card variant while the 18K gold plated eSIM card variant was sold for 4,499 Yuan (roughly $642). At the moment, its price now sits at 1,188 Yuan (roughly $169), which might have been due to the upcoming Nubia Watch launch. This, we can expect it to be between the two price points and around the 3,000 Yuan mark. However, this is just speculation, so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned.

Apple Face ID could map user’s veins in the near future

Apple is apparently looking into improving its Face ID and other visual biometric security systems. This move is being to remove any changes of people with the issue of similar looking and structured face (or a possible twin problem). The company will achieve this by mapping the users’ unique vein patterns that are under the skin.

Apple

While biometric systems like Face ID or Touch ID are a great tool for quick access into your smartphone, they also inherently have a few issues. There are plenty of recorded cases of false positives, albeit, in isolated cases. In other words, there is still one in a million chance of someone having a similar face structure. But it is also possible for dedicated individuals with malicious intent to create complex masks to fool the system. Although, that is again highly unlikely.

This is where the new feature would come in. Mapping veins under the skin is not something that can be replicated easily. Even similar looking users will have their own biological hardwiring be unique. A new Apple patent was granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week, which revealed the system. In the patent, the system works by creating a 3D map of users’ veins using a sub-epidermal imagery technique through an infrared sensor in a camera.

Apple

Furthermore, the sensor will capture flood and speckle patterns from the infrared illumination lighting up on the users’ faces. This technique is quite similar to how Face ID currently works by using infrared light, although, the newer technique focuses on the veins on the inside. While this might just be the company’s attempt to cover all bases, but the smartphone in the near future might be capable enough of this feat.
