Huawei is expected to announce the Mate 40 series in September or October. The series will include a standard model called the Mate 40 and an advanced model named Huawei Mate 40 Pro. The latter is most likely to sport a waterfall curved edge display. The standard models in the Mate series that have launched in the past have always featured flat displays. Xiaomi temporarily disables Mi Community India app and website

At the end of June, the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps including Mi Community citing privacy concerns. Now, after about two weeks, Xiaomi India has temporarily disabled the app as well as the website with a notice.

Xiaomi Mi Community India App Website Disabled Official Notice

Both the app and website of Mi Community India have been blocked by most ISPs in the country after the announcement of the ban by the government. But only now, the company has disabled them officially (via PiunikaWeb) as TikTok did the very next day.

If you visit the URL of Mi Community India, you will be treated with an official notice by the company mentioning the ban (pictured above).

It reads “We will be meeting with government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit our clarifications. Mi Community adheres to the most stringent data privacy and security requirements under Indian law. The privacy and security of Mi Fans is of utmost importance to us”.

The statement given by Xiaomi India sounds similar to the one stated by TikTok India. That said, fellow Xiaomi product users can seek help if they need from the global Mi Community or XDA forums since those websites can be accessed in India.

Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp to receive cross chat feature: Report

Facebook is apparently planning on bringing two of its chatting services closer together. The social media giant is reportedly bringing a cross-chat feature for its Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

For those unaware, Facebook currently owns popular social media platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. Since the acquisitions, the company has strived to make moving content between the different platforms more seamless and now, maybe even direct. According to a new report, Facebook Messenger users will soon be able to send messages directly to others on WhatsApp.

Facebook

WABetaInfo reported that a developer named Alessandro Paluzzi revealed that Facebook is bringing in integration support for both messaging platforms. The developer claimed to have found a few interesting references in Facebook’s codes, which suggested that the company is creating tables in a local database that will enable them to manage messages and services with other WhatsApp users.

In simpler terms, Facebook might be able to get access to different data within the WhatsApp database. The code is suggested of being able to recognize sounds of push notifications and even some details of a chat. It can find out if a WhatsApp contact is blocked, find a phone number, find whether or not a chat is archived, and may also be able to view specific WhatsApp groups and profile pictures as well.

Facebook

This is indicating that Facebook is collecting the code for a local database, which is a work in progress. WABetaInfo believes that the company might also use the same WhatsApp encryption and decryption protocol and may launch this feature in the near future. Although, this is still unconfirmed, so take it with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates regarding the matter.

South Korea has crossed over 7 million 5G subscribers as of June 2020

South Korea had been one of the first countries to adopt 5G networking. Telecom operators had launched their 5G services back in April 2019, and as of May end this year, the country had about 6.9 million subscribers for the newer and faster bandwidth.

South Korea

According to official reports from the country, the number of customers in the country rose by 536,997 in May alone. This number even broke the previous monthly record of 520,478 new subscribers from March. At the moment, the total number of 5G users represent about 10 percent of the total of 69.43 million mobile services lines in the country.

Notably, South Korea was also the first to commercially launch 5G networking back in 2019 through three telecom operators, namely SK Telecom Co., KT Corp., and LG Uplus Corp. These carries had aggressively marketed the new service in the region, with the Korean government stating that over 115,000 5G base stations have been deployed across the country.

Furthermore, the local government had also agreed on investing KRW 4 trillion (roughly $3.4 billion) in the three major telecom operators’ 5G networks during the first half of this year. This was done to expand the coverage of 5G networking with additional equipment and supporting infrastructure. The next step for the country is to adopt the ultrafast mmWave 5G network, which should reach businesses by the end of this year and personal devices by 2022.

Xiaomi is launching the Mi Smart Band 5 and other products globally on July 15

Xiaomi has scheduled a launch event for June 15 called “Xiaomi Ecosystem Product Launch”. This was shared via a tweet on the Xiami global official Twitter handle. While the post did not reveal the product that would be launched on that day, an accompanying teaser poster points to the event being a feast of some sort.Xiaomi

From the poster, we can confirm that one of the products that would be launched on that day is the Mi Band 5 for the global market. The smart wearable device will debut on the global scene as Mi Smart Band 5. This is in line with the company’s promise to launch the smart band for the international market this July. The event will commence at 20.00 GMT+8 and be watched on the official Xiaomi Twitter, Facebook pages and YouTube channel.

Further, the poster also shows the company will launch an electric scooter, possibly the MIJIA Electric Scooter 1S which was launched in China recently. The scooter comes with all the bells and whistles of a durable scooter and adopts a cheap 1,999 yuan ($232) price tag. In addition, a Xiaomi Display Monitor will also join the fray and possibly a smart door lock among others.

There is no doubt that the Mi Smart Band 5 will be the star of the event. The fitness band will come with a larger 1.1-inch AMOLED dynamic color display. It also brings several upgrades over the Mi Smart Band 4 such as an upgrade of the number of sports modes from just 6 on the Smart Band 4 to 11 on the Mi Smart Band 5. The new additional models include cycling, jump rope, yoga, elliptical and rowing machine.

The wrist band also come with over 100 theme sets and ATM5 water resistance which means they can withstand being kept underwater up to a depth of 50m. In addition, the smart band features seven (7) new features such as pressure assessment, breathing training, PAI index (Personal Activity Intelligence), women’s health tracking and remote shutter control. There is also support for 24-hour sleep monitoring and REM (Rapid eye movements) detection.v

On the design aspect, the new smart wearable device utilises a magnetic snap-on charger design. The global variant is also expected to feature support for Amazon Alexa and Google Pay but we are not so sure about that. Besides, the retail box of the global variant leaked recently showing it won’t have NFC, SpO2 and Alexa support onboard. We’ll have to wait until the launch event to find out the true position of things.

Mi Band 5 global variant will not have NFC, SpO2 sensor & Alexa

Last month, Xiaomi launched Mi Band 5 in China as the successor to Mi Band 4. On the same day, the global Xiaomi account on Twitter revealed that the new fitness tracker from the company will launch as Mi Smart Band 5 in July. Now, the pictures of the retail box for the same has leaked revealing some interesting details.

Currently, Xiaomi sells two variants of Mi Band 5 in China – with and without NFC. They are codenamed “Kongming” and “Kongming L” respectively. According to the retail box pictures of the global variant, it will be the latter version. That means no NFC, SpO2 sensor, and Alexa voice assistant for international customers.

Xiaomi might be launching this as Mi Smart Band 5 in global markets like India where contactless payments are still not a norm. Sadly, users in this region will have no access to other two goodies SpO2 sensor and Alexa.

On the other hand, this variant may also debut in Europe alongside Mi Smart Band 5 Pro, which was spotted second-time last week. Nothing else is known about the Pro version except for its codename “Kongming Pro” and support for NFC.

As NotebookCheck notes, the regular variant maybe skipping the extra features because of the Pro version.

Smartphone CMOS Image Sensor shipments to hit 5 billion units this year: Report

Smartphone shipments have been on the rise since the past few years, although it could see a decline this year because of COVID-19. The reason behind the increased demand is the new features and technology that phone makers keep introducing at regular intervals.

Thus, demand for several components has been on the rise since the past few years and it seems that image sensors have seen major growth. A report from Counterpoint Research says that demand for CMOS Image Sensors aka CIS for smartphones has increased about eightfold over the past decade. In the year 2019, it crossed the 4.5 billion units market.

CMOS Image Sensor (CIS) Shipments

Even though the smartphone shipments are expected to decline this year, the CMOS Image Sensor shipments will probably rise and have an all-time high shipment, hitting almost 5 billion units this year, claims Senior Analyst Ethan Qi.

This is likely because of the multi-camera setup and 3D sensing sensors for the smartphones that manufacturers have made a norm. Almost all smartphones getting launched these days have a multi-camera set up — the majority of which feature either the triple-camera sensor or quad-camera setup.

Counterpoint’s Component Tracker, each smartphone shipped in the first quarter of this year packed more than 3.5 image sensors on average. It also witnessed around 20 percent growth in the high- to mid-range smartphones’ quad-camera setup.

Given the current market conditions because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, smartphone shipments are expected to decline significantly. In fact, the report predicts a 10 percent year-on-year decline compared to last year.

Top 5 Chinese smartphone makers have reportedly tested 120W charging

Since the past couple of years, Android smartphone makers have been offering fast charging technology to quickly charge the phone’s battery. With time, the charging speeds have been increasing.

There is heavy competition between smartphone manufacturers regarding the fastest charging speed offered on their premium smartphones. Now it seems that the competition has reached the next level.

120W Fast Charging Technology

A leakster from China claims that the top five smartphone brands have tested the 100W wired fast charging technology to see the market fit. From 20V to 10V, the peak power for this reaches 120W (10V/12A).

Currently, no more information is available regarding this. But we have seen a few brands tease their fast charging solutions and brand like Xiaomi and Vivo have already showcased their fast charging technology.

Recently, Xiaomi has been rumored to soon launch its 100W fast charging technology in a premium smartphone. In fact, the company’s 120W power adapter with model MDY-12-ED has already passed through the 3C certification process last week.

Last month, OPPO’s executive Shen Yiren had hinted that the company could soon launch a smartphone with support for 100W fast charging technology. Last year, Vivo had showcased its 120W Super Fast Charging technology.
