Fairphone 2, launched in 2015, gets Android 9 Pie update

One thing that Android users hate about the operating system is the track record when it comes to getting the newer version update. But, in a surprising move, a small company named Fairphone is trying to change it.

The company has started rolling out the Android 9 Pie operating system to its Fairphone 2 which was launched way back in the year 2015. This is quite impressive, especially for an Android smartphone that was launched running Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.

Fairphone 2

With this new update, the Fairphone 2 becomes the only smartphone powered the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor to run the Android 9 Pie operating system. Although Android 9 Pie isn’t the latest version of the OS and is around two years old now, it still is much better than the Android Lollipop.

Most smartphone companies are promising Android update support for two years after the launch of the device. So, getting a major Android update for a five-year-old smartphone certainly is an impressive thing.

For those who are unaware, Fairphone is a small company that makes Android smartphones with an aim to design and produce devices with minimal environmental impact. Thus, their smartphones are built with repairability in mind and the company tries to offer updates and security patches for years.

The company has also launched a successor to this smartphone, named Fairphone 3. It features a 5.65-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 632 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, Android 9 Pie OS, and 3,000mAh battery. The phone has scored 10 out of 10 points on the iFixit repairability score.

Unisoc and others are trying to poach talent from Huawei HiSilicon

As the United States is putting more sanctions on Huawei, some companies in China, including Unisoc, is now trying to poach people from the Chinese giant as they are expecting brain drain from Huawei.

If the report coming from China is to be believed, then IC design companies and headhunters are now stepping up their efforts to poach executives from HiSilicon, a chipmaking arm of Huawei.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

This comes at a time when the United State government tightened export controls in a move aimed at limiting Huawei’s access to chip supplies. Since then, TSMC, the world’s biggest contract chip manufacturers, has stopped taking new orders from Huawei.

It is also being reported that a number of employees from Huawei HiSilicon have recently joined Unisoc in a management reshuffle at the company. This also presents an opportunity for smartphone makers like Xiaomi and OPPO, which have been trying to develop their own smartphone chipsets.

For those who are unaware, last month, the U.S. Commerce Department announced that all the chip manufacturers using American chipmaking equipment, intellectual property or design software needs to apply for a license before shipping chips to Huawei.

This is a similar requirement that the U.S. added when it put Huawei on the Entity List last year, effectively banning the company. However, the Chinese giant is actively trying to reduce its dependency on other companies and has not started manufacturing chips in China itself and is heavily investing in that department.

Samsung to set up display plant in India for tax benefits and incentives

Samsung, the South Korean giant, has a display manufacturing arm named Samsung Display. Now, the company is looking to set up and invest in a display manufacturing plant in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

As per the report, the company could be investing up to $705.75 million to set up the facility. It is also expected to create around 1,300 jobs. Samsung will get tax benefits and other incentives from the Indian government for setting up the display plant.

Samsung

This new facility from the world’s largest smartphone OLED panel maker is expected to begin operations at the upcoming plant in Noida. The report adds that Samsung could relocate some of the manufacturing done in China to India.

It’s noteworthy that Samsung is currently operating the world’s largest smartphone in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. Satish Mahana, the industrial minister for the state of Uttar Pradesh, said that incentives were under discussion and that no decision has been taken.

Samsung Display currently has three OLED plants in China, nine plants in South Korea, and one plant in Vietnam. The company has already announced that in order to focus on OLED and QLED, it will exit the LCD business.

The Indian government has been trying to attract companies to start manufacturing in India under its “Make In India” initiative by offering tax incentives. With China being the center of issues, India is in a good position to attract companies for setting up plants in the country. Still, it faces competition from the likes of Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is facing a threat from the Chinese giant Huawei in terms of smartphone sales. As per the report from Counterpoint, in April 2020, Huawei surpassed Samsung to become the world’s leading smartphone brand, that too, despite being banned by the United States.

O-Film unveils the thinnest periscope module with continuous zoom

With the introduction of the zoom function in mobile phone cameras, the periscope module has become the standard, especially for flagship models. However, one challenge manufacturers face is the increase in the weight and thickness of the phone body at a time fans lookout for lightweight and thin smartphones. To mitigate this challenge, Chinese image sensor manufacturer O-Film has unveiled its latest periscope lens module for smartphones that is just 5.9 mm thick.O-Film periscope camera module

The model isn’t just compact, it also offers continuous zoom instead of being locked at a specific focal length like what obtains on current periscopes. The modules are said to be capable of smoothly transitioning between 85mm and 170mm (in 35mm equivalent) while the lens aperture simultaneously changes from f/3.1 to f/5.1.

Further, the new O-Film module will provide 3x to 7x magnification compared to a typical wide camera. The company claims that it can also manufacture periscope designs with 3-5x, 5-8x and 3.5-9.5x zoom ranges. There is a piezoelectric motor onboard which smoothly and accurately drives a 3-lens assembly alongside the autofocus mechanism forward and back to reach the desired focal length.O-Film camera module

The Continuous zoom feature is said to offer higher quality images at different levels. The feature also adds to the usefulness of the periscopes as current designs with 5x magnification limit you to shooting only faraway objects.

In addition, the new module also has a prism which is deployed for Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). We hope to see this module gets adopted on a smartphone soon.

Galaxy M41 canceled; Samsung moving forward with the Galaxy M51

Earlier this week, we reported that the Galaxy M41 will be the first Samsung phone to use an OLED display supplied by a third-party manufacturer, in this case, TCL’s Star Optoelectronics Technology. The latest news out of Korea says Samsung has decided to cancel the phone.

According to SamMobile, Samsung has “stopped work” on the Galaxy M41 and is instead focusing on the Galaxy M51. Unfortunately, no reason was provided as to why Samsung decided to cancel the phone whose renders were released back in March.

Galaxy M51
The Galaxy M41 has been canceled.

The Galaxy M51 has been in development for a while and was also supposed to use OLED panels from a third-party. However, Samsung has decided to go with its own in-house panels as the third-party panels didn’t meet its quality requirements.

The specifications of the Galaxy M51 are currently unknown but there are rumors it will share several of its specs, and even design, with the Galaxy A51. A similar strategy was adopted by Samsung for the Galaxy M30s and Galaxy A50s.

At the moment, Samsung’s decision to use third-party panels has been suspended until next year according to the source.

The Galaxy M51 doesn’t have a release date yet but it is expected to be announced this month.

Honor X10 Max 5G’s 7-inch screen revealed in leaked photo

A few days ago we reported that the Honor X10 5G will get two new successors called the Honor X10 Pro and the Honor X10 Max. The latter is expected to pack a large display as evident from its name; and now, an image showing what is believed to be the phone has popped up online.

The photo showing the display appears to have been taken during a presentation. It shows that the screen is 7-inches in size and supports DCI-P3 wide color gamut.

The screen doesn’t have a notch nor does it have a punch-hole. It is therefore presumed to have a pop-up selfie camera like the standard Honor X10 5G. ITHome reports that the Honor X10 Max 5G may be the biggest 5G phone this year with its 7-inch screen.

Other than the image of the screen, it has also been reported that the phone may come with a Dimensity 800 5G processor. We expect more details will surface in the coming days or weeks.

Galaxy M31 gets Samsung Discover app recommendation service built into launcher

Samsung recently rolled out a new system update for Galaxy M31 after the re-release of April 2020 security patch. The latest build comes with version M315FXXU1ATE1. According to the changelog, the new OTA brings Discover app to the phone.

The new update for Galaxy M31 weighing 416.03 MB brings nothing but a system app called Discover for monetization purpose. This app is enabled by default on reboot after installation of the OTA.

The Discover app is integrated into One UI Home, the default launcher on Samsung smartphones. It can be accessed by opening the app drawer.

As you can see from the screenshots attached below, the Discover tab displays a set of promoted applications based on the interests selected before setting it up. Tapping on any of these apps will take you to the Galaxy Store to download them.

Fortunately, this tab can be easily disabled by simply going to Home screen settings through the three-dot menu in the app drawer.

The T&C page for Samsung Discover also mentions the inclusion of advertisements from third-parties. But so far, I haven’t encountered any but maybe it will begin to pop-up in the future.

Having said that, we are not sure if the Discover app is available on other Samsung smartphones apart from Galaxy M31.

Design

If you look at the above images, you will notice that Motorola One Fusion+ sports a full screen display with no notch or holes, while POCO X2 and Realme 6 Pro have a dual punch-hole. That is why Motorola One Fusion+ has a motorized pop-up front camera. But the One Fusion+ is like a dual-sided medal: it offers a holeless display, but it is not made of premium materials. Instead, it has a plastic body like the ones you can find on entry-level phones. Instead, the POCO X2 offers a glass back and an aluminum frame just like premium flagships. That is why POCO X2 would be my choice. Realme 6 Pro sits in the middle with a glass back and a plastic frame. Motorola One Fusion+, POCO X2, and Realme 6 Pro are all splash resistant phones.

Display

OLED displays are trending, but you do not get any with this trio of devices. They all feature an IPS panels, but POCO X2 remains very interesting since it offers a high 120 Hz refresh rate and the HDR10 certification for better image quality, besides a wider display diagonal. Right after in the display ranking we got the Realme 6 Pro with a 90 Hz refresh rate, while Motorola One Fusion+ sports an unsurprising IPS panel with a standard refresh rate and no other interesting technologies.

Specs & Software

You can get slightly better performances with the POCO X2 since it features a slightly more powerful chipset: the Snapdragon 730G is older than the Snapdragon 720G found on the Realme 6 Pro, but it offers amazing CPU and GPU performance. But if you go for the Realme 6 Pro, you won’t lose so much. In both cases, you get up to 8 GB of RAM and UFS 2.1 internal storage. Motorola One Fusion+ comes with the vanilla Snapdragon 730 (it is basically a 730G with an inferior GPU) and just 6 GB of RAM.

Camera

The most convincing camera department belongs to the Realme 6 Pro: the only one to offer a telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. It has a quad camera with a 64 MP main sensor, a 12 MP telephoto lens, an 8 MP ultrawide sensor and a 2 MP macro camera. Further, it is the only one with an ultrawide dual front camera (the POCO X2 has a secondary depth sensor instead of an ultrawide lens).

Battery

Motorola One Fusion+ is the king of battery life not only because of its higher battery capacity (whopping 5000 mAh) but also because it has a more efficient display with a standard refresh rate. Realme 6 Pro has the smallest battery but still more than sufficient, and it features the fastest charging technology with a 30W power.

Price

Motorola One Fusion+ is priced Rs. 16,999 (roughly $223) in India (6/128 GB), POCO X2 costs Rs. 15,999 or $210 (6/64 GB), and Realme 6 Pro is actually priced Rs. 17,999 ($236) in its base variant (6/64 GB). With those prices, POCO X2 looks like the most interesting device of this trio due to its premium design, better display, great hardware, and pretty nice battery. But Realme 6 Pro offers better cameras, while Motorola One Fusion+ has longer battery life.
