Meizu 17/17 Pro will get stabilization for video recording from all cameras via OTA update

Meizu launched the Meizu 17 series in early May in China. The duo is only limited to its home country and it is not sure whether if it will be ever made available in global markets. These handsets feature a unique design and specifications to match it. But they lack OIS and hence the company has announced to fix it by adding stabilization for video recording from almost all the cameras present on them.

Meizu is one of the bizarre smartphone makers in the market. The company launched the Meizu 17 and 17 Pro with 90Hz refresh rate out of the box, albeit the phones support 120Hz. It was later enabled via an OTA update.

Now, the brand has announced to enable stabilization for video recording at all the available resolution and frame rates. More importantly, it will be applicable for all the cameras including wide, ultra-wide, telephoto, and even front.

The regular Meizu 17 also has a macro camera but we are not sure if it will also get the stabilization feature as the company did not mention it in the Weibo announcement post.

The stabilization for video recording on Meizu 17 series will be added via an OTA update. It will be rolled out in batches to all the units in the coming days.

Rumor: SuperVOOC 3.0 to bring 80W fast charge to OPPO phones

OPPO’s SuperVOOC 2.0 is currently the fastest charging technology available on a commercial device. Devices with support for the technology support 65W fast charging and can be charged from empty to full in a little over less than half an hour. Next year, OPPO intends to take it higher next year according to new info.

A Weibo post by the Chinese blogger that goes by Really Assen revealed OPPO’s SuperVOOC 3.0 will have a power output rating of 80W. That is an increase of 18.75% over SuperVOOC 2.0’s 65W.

SuperVOOC 2.0 charges at 10V and 6.5A. With SuperVOOC 3.0, we speculate OPPO will go with a higher voltage similar to what we saw on the 120W Xiaomi charger. So SuperVOOC 3.0 chargers should have a voltage output of 20V and current output of 4A to achieve a maximum power output of 80W.

While the leak says SuperVOOC 3.0 will arrive next year, we won’t be surprised if OPPO announces before the end of the year. Notwithstanding, we advise you to take the info with a pinch of salt until more concrete info surfaces.

Design

In my honest opinion, the king of the design in this trio is the Motorola Moto G8 because it offers a more futuristic punch-hole display while still providing a similar screen-to-body ratio to its two rivals. But if you are looking for amazing build quality you should not underestimate the Realme 6i as it is the only splash resistant phone in this comparison. But in each case, do not expect a premium design. All the devices from this trio have a plastic body instead of a glass back like higher-end phones. So if you want a more impressive design, you should move to something else such as devices from the Redmi Note 9 family, if you want to stay in a similar price segment.

Display

The display is not the strongest point of these handsets, just like the design. The Redmi 9 wins because it is the only to offer a Full HD+ resolution, so it provides a higher level of detail. Moto G8 and Realme 6i come with a below-average HD+ resolution, despite they have wide displays, so their pixel density is all but high. Redmi 9, Moto G8, and Realme 6i are equipped with average IPS panels, nothing so exciting. The only element making the difference is the Full HD+ resolution on the Redmi 9.

Specs & Software

While most of the people prefer having a phone with a Snapdragon chipset inside like the SD665 found on the Moto G8, the Helio G80 found on the Redmi 9 and Realme 6i actually scores more points on the most reliable benchmarks and it comes with high GPU performances. But the difference is not abyssal and the Snapdragon 665 chipset is built with a more efficient production process (11 nm vs 12 nm). Moto G8 also offers a lighter experience thanks to stock Android, while Redmi 8 and Realme 6i have highly-customized user interfaces. Note that you can get Realme 6i with up to 128 GB, while Moto G8 and Redmi 9 come with max 64 GB. But in each case, you can expand the internal storage through a micro SD slot (it is shared on the Moto G8 and dedicated on Realme 6i and Redmi 9).

Camera

The most impressive rear camera belongs to the Moto G8. Despite it has a triple camera instead of a quad camera, it sports an awesome main sensor with a bright f/1.7 aperture and laser autofocus boosting the photo quality. It is even able to record videos with a 4K resolution, unlike Realme 6i and Redmi 9. On the other hand, Realme 6i is still able to offer a great photo quality thanks to its 48 MP main sensor and a great 16 MP selfie camera. Redmi 9 should be the most disappointing one as a camera phone.

Battery

Realme 6i, Redmi 9, and Moto G8 are very good battery phones. But the longest-lasting one in most of the scenarios is the Realme 6i because it has a bigger battery than Moto G8 and a less energy-demanding display than Redmi 9 due to its lower resolution. Realme 6i is the king of battery life, but keep in mind that all of these phones offer a very long-lasting battery. Realme 6i and Redmi 9 support 18W fast charging, while unfortunately, Moto G8 does not provide any kind of fast charging technology.

Price

Redmi 9 and Realme 6i start from €179/$203 in their base variant with 3 GB of RAM (Redmi 9’s price varies depending on the market), while Moto G8 is only available in a version with 4 GB of RAM and it costs €199/$225. There is not a definitive winner of this comparison and you should make a choice based on your personal needs. Realme 6i has a longer battery life and pretty nice cameras for photos (it is my favorite one), Moto G8 has a great rear camera for photos and videos, and Redmi 9 has a better display.

Galaxy Note9 gets One UI 2.1 update along with the latest security patch

Samsung is rolling out a new update to its 2018 flagship, the Galaxy Note9. The update brings an updated UI as well as the latest security patch to the device.

The Galaxy Note9 is one of the phones that ran Samsung’s old Experience UI out of the box. However, it got the new One UI interface along with Android 10 a few months ago. This new update brings One UI 2.1, the version that shipped with the Galaxy S20 series, so owners should get some new features.

The update arrives as version N960FXXU5ETF5 with a file size of 1.25GB and has already begun rolling out to users in Germany. It has been reported that this version is for the international version of the phone that has the Exynos 9810 chipset powering it.

The changelog doesn’t say much but the update comes with June 2020’s security patch. The new features One UI 2.1 brings include Quick Share which is Samsung’s answer to Apple’s AirDrop. There is also Music Share which allows a friend’s phone to play audio to a speaker or headphones that is connected to your own phone without the need for the friend to connect directly to the speaker or headphones. Other features worth mentioning are a new UI for the camera app and Live Caption.

Xiaomi Bluetooth Headset Pro with Google Assistant, Siri support launched for ¥199 (~$28)

Xiaomi‘s wearable shipment has received a big boost since the company ventured into the True Wireless headset market. The Chinese brand continues to expand its portfolio in that segment and has launched a new hearable product dubbed Xiaomi Bluetooth Headset Pro (model number: LYEJ06LS).

The headphone comes with an ergonomic design crafted to improve comfort and also to ensure it doesn’t fall off your ear while you are working out or doing other rigorous tasks. It adopts a balanced hanging ear design, which disperses the weight of the headset when worn. The support point is an elastic soft rubber material. The earbuds of the headset can be rotated by 180° which makes it feasible to switch between the left and right ears.

The headset uses a dual microphone design in order to reduce noise. It is powered by Qualcomm QCC3020 wireless audio SoC. The SoC is an entry-level flash programmable Bluetooth Audio SoC based on low power architecture, designed for use in TrueWireless Stereo earbuds. It is also equipped with a 12mm dynamic speaker.

The TWS headset also comes with a 100mAh battery which can withstand up to 8 hours of talk time on a single charge. There is also a charging box packing a 600mAh cell which extends the total battery life to about 40 hours. The charging box has a pair of POGO pins while the TWS earphone has a pair of connectors on the surface with which it is charged. The box also features USB-C port for fast charging.

For connectivity, the wireless headset supports Bluetooth 5.0. It also features support for XiaoAI voice assistant as well as Google Assistant and Apple Siri, making this a product designed to be sold outside China as well. It is indeed impressive to see that Xiaomi has started including support for other popular voice assistants aside from its Chinese-only XiaoAI voice assistant.

The Mi Bluetooth Headset Pro is now on sale on Mi Home and Xiaomi Youpin and is priced at 199 yuan (~$28).

Vivo X50 Pro with gimbal camera might launch in India by mid-July

Vivo launched the X50 series on June 1 in China. Ahead of the event, Jerome Chen, the CEO of Vivo mobiles India revealed the handsets to be made available in the country soon. Now, according to a tip, Vivo X50 Pro could launch in India by mid-July.

Vivo is known to bring most of its devices to India, the country in which it ranks second in the market share after Xiaomi. Hence, it is sure for the brand to launch the X50 series in the country.

But now, thanks to a retail source of 91Mobiles, the launch of X50 Pro in India has been somewhat confirmed to take place sometime in mid-July. However, the exact date is still a mystery.

The Vivo X50 Pro is a mid-range smartphone powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G paired with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB/256GB UFS 2.1 internal storage. The handset sports a 6.56-inch FHD+ (2376 x 1080 pixels) curved AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate and a punch hole for 32MP selfie shooter.

The device packs a quad-camera setup, which includes a 48MP primary sensor with gimbal OIS, an 8MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom and OIS, a 13MP dedicated portrait snapper with 2x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultra-wide unit.

Other features of the phone include 5G connectivity, WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, in-display fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C, FuntouchOS 10 based on Android 10, 4,315 mAh battery, and 33W fast charging.

Vivo X50 Pro retails for 4,298 Yuan ($609) and 4,698 Yuan ($665) for the 8GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB storage configurations respectively in China. The Indian pricing might start around ₹50,000 ($661).

Xiaomi Mi Band 5 price leaks ahead of launch – 189 yuan (~$27)!

Xiaomi will officially take the wraps off the Mi Band 5 in China tomorrow (June 11). Ahead of the launch, the smart band was earlier listed on Jingdong for pe-sale but the page didn’t show the price tag. However, a blogger has revealed a screenshot purportedly grabbed from Xiaomi’s self-operated store on Jingdong which shows the Mi Band 5 will retail for 189 yuan (~$27). If true, that is an amazing offer considering the upgraded design and features that have been revealed to feature on the smart band. For the avoidance of doubt, the store listing now shows ¥9999.

A good deal of the features that would ship with the Mi Band 5 have already been officially outed. The smart band is said to feature seven major upgrades compared to the previous generation model. The upgrades include Dynamic Color Screen, a new magnetic charging, NFC UnionPay flash payment, remote control camera, professional sensor upgrade, 11 professional sports modes and a new Women Health mode. The fitness tracker will also come with more comprehensive heart rate sleep monitoring, built-in high-precision sensors, and can also process heart rate changes during exercise, providing more accurate data support for the wearer.

In terms of the design, the Xiaomi Band 5 official renders are already in the open, confirming its 20 per cent larger display. The next-gen Mi Band is said to pack a 1.2-inch display which is bigger than the 0.95-inch one on the Mi Band 4.

In addition, the smart wearable will also feature support for Google Pay along with Amazon Alexa smart voice assistant on the global variant. The Chinese variant will have the company’s own XiaoAI Smart Voice Assistant. Expect to see the Mi Band 5 in four watch strap colours; Black, Green, Yellow, and Red.

P.S. The Mi Band 5 is already available to pre-order on Giztop for just $32.99. If indeed the smart band will retail for $27 in China, then this is an amazing price, coupled with the fact that you get to be among the first persons to own the wearable.

ColorOS 7 Android 10 stable update live for Oppo F9/F9 Pro in India

At the end of May, Oppo released ColorOS 7 stable update timeline for India. In that, the company mentioned it will be rolling out the update to F9 and F9 Pro on June 10. As promised, these two devices have now started receiving the update as ‘Trial Version’ build.

Oppo announced ColorOS 7 based on Android 10 back in November 2019. But the company is yet to roll out the update to all the eligible devices. Between this, the brand has also released ColorOS 7.1 and ColorOS 7.2, which are currently limited to certain launch devices.

Having said that, the ColorOS 7 update for Oppo F9 and F9 Pro comes with build number CPH1823EX_11.F.09_2090_202006051759. It can be downloaded by navigating to Settings > Software Updates > Gear Icon > Trial Version.

The update is only available for units running CPH1823EX_11_C.19_1190_202003281428 and CPH1823EX_11_C.20_1120_202005081852 builds. So make sure to update to these builds if your device is running an older build than these.

Also, though it is called ‘Trial Version’, it is basically stable build just like Xiaomi’s MIUI Stable Beta but available for all, instead of beta authorized Mi accounts. If the early birds find the build to be without major bugs, the same will be rolled out to all users via OTA.

The next in line to receive ColorOS 7 stable update in India are Oppo A5/A9 2020 on June 15, Oppo F7/F7 128GB on June 24, and Oppo R15/R15 Pro in July.

MediaTek’s 5G mobile SoCs shipment in 2020 expected to exceed 80 million

As more and more countries join the list of countries where commercial 5G has rolled out, 5G network coverage continues to expand. Subsequently, consumer demand for 5G smartphones is on the rise. As a result, a lot more 5G phones have been launched this year compared to the same period last year and there are more to come.

With the increasing demand for 5G smartphones, the demand for 5G processors from mobile phone manufacturers is also increasing. Presently, MediaTek and Qualcomm are the major suppliers of 5G processors for smartphones. Although Huawei and Samsung manufacture their own in-house chipsets, they are mostly used for their own smartphones. In rare cases, we have seen a few models running on Samsung‘s 5G Exynos chipset like the Exynos 880-powered Vivo Y70s 5G.

As per a report carried by DigiTimes (Paywalled) the Taiwanese fabless chip maker is expected to ship more than 80 million mobile SoCs for 5G handsets in 2020. The report also hinted that most of the shipments will be to Chinese handset vendors. This is likely due to the spread in the 5G coverage in China. The projected shipment volume may push up MediaTek’s global market share in the segment to at least 40% and serve as a major growth driver for the company, the report tips.

While the estimates look impressive, they are lower than MediaTek’s projection of 200 million 5G mobile SoCs shipment for 2020. 200 million shipments would have been feasible but we don’t see the company getting such figures due to the slump in the smartphone market occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic. Moreso, the Taiwanese semiconductor company still has Qualcomm to compete with. In addition, commercial 5G network is yet to role out in most cities outside China.

Presently, MediaTek has launched a number of 5G smartphone processors, including the Dimensity 1000 series, Dimensity 800 series and the Dimensity 820 series. There are rumours that MediaTek and Qualcomm will also introduce entry-level 5G smartphone processors in the third quarter of this year.

Xiaomi officially announced the MIUI 12 custom ROM on April 27 during the Mi 10 Youth launch event. The Chinese firm later announced the custom ROM for the global market on May 19 with a schedule of models that would get the update. Earlier, the company had commenced recruitment of MIUI 12 Global beta testers for the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro. The Mi 9, Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro also joined the party of beta testers.

Xiaomi has now announced on the Mi Community, yet another Global Pilot testing program for the Redmi Note 8 Pro, Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7S. Interested owners of the K20 models have until June 17, 9 PM IST to apply for the pilot testing program. Since this is for a beta version, expect the software to contain bugs. Redmi 9 powered by MediaTek Helio G80 and FHD+ display launches in Spain for €149

Xiaomi officially launches Redmi 9 in Spain after going on sale on Lazada and GizTop last week ahead of any official announcement. The phone comes in two storage configurations – 3GB + 32GB / 4GB + 64GB and costs €149 and €179 respectively. It is available in three color options – Carbon Grey, Sunset Purple, and Ocean Green.

The newly launched Redmi 9 is the direct successor to last year’s Redmi 8. It comes with better specifications overall and even features some firsts in the series. For instance, It is the first device in the Redmi number series phones to feature an FHD+ display and a quad-camera setup.

The Redmi 9 is powered by MediaTek Helio G80 SoC paired with 3GB/4GB LPDDR4X RAM and 32GB/64GB eMMC 5.1 ROM. It sports a 6.53-inch FHD+ IPS LCD panel with 19:5:9 aspect ratio, 394 PPI, 70% NTSC color gamut, 400 nits brightness, Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and a dew-drop notch. Thus, we can say that this handset comes with the best display ever in the series, at least on paper.

The body of the phone is made of polycarbonate (plastic) with a matte finish, unlike glossy on its predecessor. The back of the device houses a 13MP (primary) + 8MP (118° ultra-wide) + 5MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) quad-camera array and a fingerprint sensor. Whereas, the front camera is of 8MP.

Other features of the device include Dual SIM, 4G connectivity, VoLTE, single-band (2.4 GHz) WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, wireless FM radio, dedicated microSD card slot, multifunctional NFC, IR blaster, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C, MIUI 11 based on Android Pie, 5,020 mAh battery, and 18W fast charging.

Xiaomi Youpin crowdfunds Fixnow Battery Powered Foam Gun for Cars

Earlier today (10th June 2020), the Xiaomi Youpin platform launched a new product for crowdfunding. The gadget is a portable handheld car washing machine that is powered by a lithium battery, meaning it doesn’t need to be plugged in during use, with funding starting from 299 Yuan (roughly 42 US Dollars).

The Fixnow Battery Powered Foam Gun for Cars is capable of a maximum output of up to 3000ml per minute and features two levels of adjustable water pressure. It is powered by a 2,600mAh battery, which provides a water pressure of 2.4MPa. The device houses a brushless moto that allows for both the high pressure (2.4MPa) and low pressure water levels (1.4MPa) that can be used to clean dirt from different regions of users vehicle’s body.

The Fixnow Battery Powered Foam Gun is an improved variant of its predecessor, with a 20 percent higher battery capacity and operation time. It even supports fast charging up to 25W and takes only 2.5 hours to fully charge from zero. One of its notable features is its patented air duct technology that allows the water pressure function to work, which even reduces the temperature of the motor and helps extends battery life at the same time. Xiaomi launches the MIJIA Smart Kitchen Hood for ¥1,499 (~$212)

Xiaomi has launched the MIJIA Smart Kitchen Hood. The product is presently on pre-sale on the Youpin platform and it adopts a 1,499 yuan (~$212) price tag.

The MIJIA Smart Kitchen Hood is said to be the first side suction type stove set by MIJIA. It isn’t the first range hood that would be released by the company, though. Last year, the MIJIA Smart Smoke Stove with a vented range hood was launched. The difference here is that last year’s model had a range hood that hovers above the stove.

This time around, the range hood is mounted on the sidewall and does not hover above the cooker. The kitchen hood is definitely the major highlight of the cooker set. It packs a more powerful suction and a wider vent which ensures smoke is efficiently evacuated from the kitchen.

The MIJIA Smart Range Hood also comes with MIJIA app connectivity. It also comes with the smart feature of interconnection between the hood and the cooker. Thus, if the cooker is turned on, the range hood automatically comes on. The hood has a large air aspiration volume of 20 cubic meters/min. It also comes with an automatic cruise boost and a 4200W large firepower, 230° step-less fire adjustment and 10 levels of safety protection.

Xiaomi patents a new smartphone with a pop up selfie camera

A new Xiaomi patent has just surfaced online. While the Chinese tech giant has been seen covering all bases in the past with unique designs and more, the new patent is actually quite grounded with a pop up camera.

This patent was filed back in August 2018, which is during the time when smartphones with pop up cameras actually took off in the market. However, since then, the popularity has seemingly worn off with flagship models already shifting towards punch hole cameras and research and development being put into under-display sensors as well.

One notably flaw of the mechanized pop up camera system was that it made waterproofing the smartphone harder for OEMs. Thus, we may never actually seeing the handset as detailed in the patent. Although, we have no way of confirming that either. Looking at the patent images, the smartphone has the pop up camera linked to its rear camera module.

In other words, the front and rear systems seem to be linked, with the pop up mechanism probably hiding behind it when not in use. On the bottom, a USB Type C charging port can be found which is flanked by a lone speaker grill. The regular features like antenna bands and mic can also be found, but the camera position is uncommon. A triple camera system can be observed on the rear with a periscopic lens, which was relatively rare in 2018, along with the primary lens and depth sensor. Unfortunately, it is unknown if Xiaomi will actually develop or launch such a device, but stay tuned for any updates regarding this handset.

OxygenOS 10.5.10 re-enables color filter camera on OnePlus 8 Pro global version

OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a color filter camera. This camera is capable of seeing through thin plastics and clothes. Thus, the company announced to disable it in the Chinese variant of the handset running HydrogenOS. But accidentally, the brand disabled it in the global version as well via OxygenOS 10.5.9 OTA. But now, it is re-enabling the ‘photochrom’ filter through new OxygenOS 10.5.10 update.

Last week, OnePlus began to roll out May 2020 security patch update to the OnePlus 8 series worldwide. This patch comes as OxygenOS 10.5.10 for Global and Indian variants of OnePlus 8 Pro.

Surprisingly, the changelog for the update does not mention anything about the re-enabling of ‘photochrom’ filter in the camera app. Having said that, this change is only applicable to the global variant of the handset.

The European version of OnePlus 8 Pro never received the update disabling the color filter camera in the first place. Also, though the Indian variant is receiving the same build as global, it does not re-enable the filter.

Because OnePlus has already announced that the handset will go on sale in India with the color filter camera disabled. However, it did confirm to enable it at the end of June via a new OTA update.

Galaxy S21 will use Samsung displays as BOE OLED panels failed testing: Report

A report from May 2020 had revealed that Samsung Electronics was testing OLED panels from BOE as an affordable alternative to its own OLED screens. BOE panels were even said to be featured on some phones in the Galaxy S21 series next year, although, a new report has suggested that the upcoming flagship series will run the South Korean tech giant’s proprietary OLED panels after BOE screens failed testings.

The news arrives from South Korea, which states that BOE OLED panels have failed Samsung’s testing process. Reportedly, BOE panels didn’t pass even the first stage of testing. This arrives after the company was rumored to supply Samsung with 6.67 inch screens and panels with a 90Hz refresh rate. However, it seems like that might not be the case anymore.

Furthermore, BOE OLED panels have apparently also failed tests for the iPhone 12 as well. The Cupertino based giant’s 2020 flagship is expected to arrive later this year and rumors have pointed at the device using OLED panels from BOE, LG Display, and Samsung Display for the series. Although, this is still unconfirmed so take it with a grain of salt for now, and stay tuned.
