Xiaomi releases MIUI 11.0.24.0 update for Mi 10 Pro with DxOMark Camera

When Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 10 Pro in February for its home market, it’s DxOMark Camera review went live on the same day itself. Later, in March,  Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi promised a camera update, the version which the DxOMark team actually reviewed. Keeping up with the words, the company is now rolling out MIUI 11.0.24.0 update to Mi 10 Pro, which is said to improve the camera performance of the device.

Mi 10 Pro MIUI 11.0.24.0 DxOMark Update

The new MIUI 11.0.24.0 stable update for Mi 10 Pro weighs only 406MB. It brings a couple of other changes apart from the so-called DxOMark version camera.

The latest update for Mi 10 Pro, which is being rolled out to Chinese version of the device bumps up the security patch level to April 2020. Further, it also adds support for stereo ringtones as well as mirror option for short video mode in the camera app.

The update also fixes occasional hiccups faced by users in AI and HDR modes in the camera app. Also, it brings WiFi 6 icon, which will be displayed on the status bar when the phone is connected to a supported router.

Anyway, we are not sure how well the performance of the cameras will improve with this update. Last year, OnePlus pulled a similar stunt for its then flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 7 Pro. And it did enhance the efficiency of the cameras on that phone. Hopefully, Mi 10 Pro gets a similar boost.

Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro to reportedly launch as POCO F2 Pro

After Xiaomi-backed Redmi had launched its flagship Redmi K30 Pro smartphone, it was reported that the device could get launched in India as the POCO F2. It also made sense given that the company has launched Redmi K30 as POCO X2 in the Indian market.

However, C Manmohan, General Manager of the POCO brand said that the POCO F2 won’t be the rebranded version of Redmi K30 Pro. Now, a new report has surfaced online which reveals that the Redmi K30 Pro will launch as the POCO F2 Pro in India.

Details leaked through Google Play support page reveals that the POCO F2 Pro carries codename “Imi” which is the same codename as Redmi K30 Pro. This confirms that the POCO F2 Pro is indeed the Redmi K30 Pro.

Redmi K30 Pro 5G

If this turns out to be true, then the upcoming POCO F2 series will consist of at least two smartphones — the standard POCO F2 and a higher configuration variant of the same, dubbed as the POCO F2 Pro.

Since the POCO F2 Pro will be a rebranded Redmi K30 Pro, it will feature a pop-up front-facing camera for a notch-less display design and a circular quad-camera module on the back. The phone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 octa-core chipset.

It will feature a 6.67-inch Full HD+ display with 2400 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, a 20MP front-facing snapper, a quad-camera setup on the back that consists of a 64MP primary sensor, a 13MP super wide-angle lens, a 5MP telephoto lens and a 2MP depth sensor. The phone will be powered by a 4,700mAh battery with 33W fast charging.

Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro

However, it remains to be the seen what the company has planned for the POCO F2, which will be act as the successor to the POCO F1, the brand’s first smartphone that was launched in March 2018. While not much information is available about the upcoming POCO F2 series, we expect the company to launch the devices as early as next month.

For the uninitiated, POCO brand has been split as an independent company by Xiaomi earlier this year. The move came at a time when the brand was considered dead given that its executives had left the brand and the company had not launched any product apart from its highly-successful first and only POCO F1.

Earlier this year, soon after making the brand independent, the POCO X2 smartphone was launched in the Indian market, which as we mentioned, is a rebranded Redmi K30. It remains to be seen how Xiaomi positions the POCO brand and Redmi K-series given that both fall within the same price segment.

OPPO leads Chinese smartphone market in the first quarter of this year

As per the latest data released by Trustdata, the Chinese smartphone maker OPPO is named as the leading smartphone brand in China for the first quarter of 2020 in terms of smartphone shipments.

The report claims that the smartphone shipments from OPPO accounted for around 21.4 percent of the market share, leading the domestic market. The second position was grabbed by Vivo is a market share of 20.5 percent.

OPPO Shipments Q1 2020 China

Huawei, on the other hand, comes in at third with a market share of 20.2 percent. Xiaomi and Apple have been placed at the fourth and fifth position, each accounting for 10.3 percent and 10.1 percent market share.

Do note that the report is counting shipments of Huawei and Honor separately and that is the reason Huawei isn’t leading this this list. If the shipments of Huawei and Honor are combined, like most data analysis companies do, then the company leads the market with a market share of 29.9 percent.

The coronavirus outbreak has severely impacted the smartphone industry. In the first month of this year, the domestic mobile phone shipments in China sharply fell by 38.9 percent year-on-year with shipments of just 20.8 million units.

The shipments from domestic brands in China fell by 42.9 percent in January 2020. As per the data released by the Chinese government, companies sold around 6.34 million phones in February in China, down 54.7% from 14 million around the same time a year ago.

A couple of months ago, IDC had revealed that it is anticipating a 2.3% decrease in smartphone shipments for this year, down to 1.3 billion. The main portion of 2020 will see a decrease of 10.6 percent YoY and the market is anticipated to just make up ground in the second half with acceleration in 5G adaptation.

Renders give us a first look at Samsung’s first pop-up selfie camera phone

While Samsung is not one to shy away from adopting new designs or even starting a trend that later becomes the industry standard, there are still a few ones it has skipped. One example that comes to mind is the pop-up selfie camera design. However, that should change soon as a leak has revealed Samsung is working on its very first phone with a pop-up selfie camera.

Samsung Galaxy Pop-up Selfie Camera Phone

The source of the leak is serial leaker @OnLeaks and he has partnered with Pigtou for this one.

The upcoming Samsung phone whose name is unknown will likely be an affordable mid-range device based on its design.

It has a flat display and the screen is said to be about 6.5-inches in size with a moderately sized lower bezel. The back is curved and is home to three cameras housed together with the LED flash and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. The dimensions of the device are 183.5 x 77 x 9.2 (9.7 with the camera module) millimeters.

The bottom of the phone is home to a USB Type-C port flanked on one side by the speaker griller and on the other by a microphone. Surprisingly, Samsung didn’t put an audio jack on the device but there seems to be an IR blaster at the top of the phone.

The pop-up camera doesn’t have any fancy additions or even an LED flash as we have seen from some other manufacturers.

It is unknown if the phone will be a 5G device or will be a 4G phone. Nevertheless, there is nothing stopping Samsung from releasing both a 4G and a 5G version of the phone.

What do you think about Samsung’s first phone with a pop-up selfie camera? Let us know in the comment box.

Alleged Samsung Galaxy A21s specs leaked

Samsung is yet to announce a successor to the Galaxy A20. The budget mid-range phone was announced in April 2019. It was then followed with a slight refresh called the Galaxy A20s with a bigger screen and an extra camera. Now specs, alleged to be those of the Galaxy A21s have leaked.

Samsung Galaxy A20s
The Galaxy A20s’ successor might come with an even bigger battery

The specs were posted on Twitter by Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414) and he adds that they are from a new source, so they should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The Galaxy A21s is said to come with an even slightly bigger screen than the A20s. The display is 6.55-inches in size and will have a resolution of 720 x 1600.

The phone is said to have triple rear cameras that include a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP camera that should be for depth. The selfie camera is a 13MP sensor.

The processor was not revealed but the RAM is 3GB and the storage is 64GB with support for storage expansion. It is also stated that the Galaxy A21s will have a 5000mAh battery capacity, a significant bump from the 4000mAh of its predecessor. However, what is surprising is the Micro-USB port seeing as the Galaxy A20s and Galaxy A20 have USB Type-C ports.

Other features mentioned are NFC, Dual SIM support, a 3.5mm audio jack, and Bluetooth 5.0. It is also mentioned in the leak that the phone will come in Black, Blue, and White.

A report from the previous week had claimed that Honor’s next X-series smartphone will be arriving as Honor X10, and not Honor 10X as it was previously thought. Today, Honor President Zhao Ming confirmed today that Honor 10X will be renamed to Honor X10 and it will be arriving as a 5G-ready smartphone.

Ming said that if the Honor 30S powered by the Kirin 820 5G chipset has set off a wave of 5G popularity in China, the X-series will set off a 5G storm. Last week, the Chinese firm confirmed that the sales of the Honor 9X exceeded 10 million units in China.

While the rumor mill has claimed that Honor decided to rename its upcoming X-series phone as Honor X10 in order to prevent consumers from getting confused it with Redmi’s forthcoming Redmi 10X 4G phone, Ming did not share the exact reason behind renaming the product. Speculations surrounding the Honor X10 have claimed that it could be featuring the Kirin 820 5G chipset. It is speculated that the Honor X10 is codenamed as Teller. But is it the best flagship killer out there or there are devices with a higher value for money? In order to let you gather all the info in regard and establish this, after comparing it to the Huawei Nova 7 and the Honor 30, we decided to compare it with Xiaomi Mi 10 and Redmi K30 Pro.

Design

OnePlus 8 and Xiaomi Mi 10 have a punch-hole design, while Redmi K30 Pro comes with a holeless display and a motorized pop-up camera. In each case, you get an aluminum frame and a glass back. But the OnePlus 8 is the only which offers protection against dust and water: it is waterproof and dustproof with the IP68 certification. Which device has the best look? With its higher screen-to-body ratio Xiaomi Mi 10 and its curved display are very impressive, but OnePlus 8 has a curved screen as well and it is even more compact due to its smaller display. The Redmi K30 Pro is holeless, but it has a flat display and slightly thicker bezels. Further, it has a bigger round-shaped camera module on the back, not a great solution for a minimalistic look.

Display

Unlike most of the last-generation flagships, Redmi K30 Pro does not support a high refresh rate but it comes with a standard 60 Hz rate. That is why OnePlus 8 and Xiaomi Mi 10 look more interesting with their 90 Hz refresh rate. OnePlus 8 and Xiaomi Mi 10 are very close in terms of display quality and we recommend both if you need a good viewing experience. But there are flagships with better displays, keep that in mind. However, we are still talking about high-end OLED panels. Xiaomi Mi 10 has a wider 6.67-inch diagonal, while OnePlus 8 is more compact. But both the devices come with a single punch hole.

Hardware/Software

With OnePlus 8, Xiaomi Mi 10, and Redmi K30 Pro, you get very similar performances. All of them are fueled by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform, so you get the best chipset in the Android world released in 2020. Further, they all come with LPPDR5 RAM. Redmi K30 Pro has a faster UFS 3.1 native storage (if we exclude the base variant with 128 GB of UFS 3.0 storage), but it offers less RAM in its top configuration. While Redmi K30 Pro stops at 8 GB of RAM, with OnePlus 8 and Xiaomi Mi 10 you get up to 12 GB of RAM. We believe the OnePlus 8 may offer slightly higher performance due to the amazing software optimization of its Oxygen OS, but we are only talking about marginal differences.

Camera

Unlike the Redmi K30 Pro, OnePlus 8 and Xiaomi Mi 10 lack a telephoto sensor. But despite that, they are still better camera phones due to their better main sensors. The Xiaomi Mi 10 is definitely the most impressive with its 108 MP main sensor supporting OIS and 8K video recording. Then we got the OnePlus 8 with its 48 MP triple camera including a 16 MP ultrawide sensor. Redmi K30 Pro comes right after with a pretty nice camera but far from high-end camera phones.

Battery

The biggest battery belongs to the Xiaomi Mi 10: a 4780 mAh unit. But Redmi K30 Pro should offer a longer battery life in a lot of scenarios because its display does not support a 90 Hz refresh rate which consumes more energy. However, we still prefer the Xiaomi Mi 10 since it supports both fast wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, while you can only charge the OnePlus 8 and the Redmi K30 Pro by cable.

Price

OnePlus 8 debuted in China with a €522/$565 starting price (€699 globally). Xiaomi Mi 10 is priced €560/$606 in China, and Redmi K30 Pro starts from €499/$540. OnePlus 8 and Xiaomi Mi 10 offer a better experience than Redmi K30 Pro. But at least on the paper, we prefer the Xiaomi Mi 10 due to the presence of wireless charging technology, a bigger battery, and an amazing camera.

Xiaomi’s latest HIMO Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle in pictures

Xiaomi recently put up a new Himo Z16 foldable electric bicycle for crowdfunding on the Youpin platform. The bike seems to have drawn some inspiration from the Himo H1 ultra-foldable bike. However, it adopts a bigger size than the H1. The design also improves on the functionality as this is a motorised bicycle with pedals. This ensures you get pedal assistance if the battery runs out.  Himo Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle

The HIMO Z16 adopts a three-fold design which allows the central body, the foot pedals, and the bicycle’s handlebar to collapse. The bike also features an aluminium alloy frame which is relatively light. The entire bike weighs 22.5kg thanks to the materials from which it is built. The low weight exerts less load on the battery hence preserving the battery life. Himo Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle

Just like all other electric bikes, there is an LCD display which shows the working parameters such as battery power, mileage, speed in real-time and other information. The instrument cluster has an IP7 waterproof rating.Himo Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle

In addition, the power-assisted bicycle can be used in three different modes; full-electric power, power-assisted riding and manual modelling. On the full-electric power mode, it has a mileage of 55km on a full charge. This can be extended to 80km distance in the assisted mode. The bike packs a removable 18650 automotive-grade lithium battery, which can achieve both high power and long-lasting output. The battery can be fully charged in 5 hours.Himo Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle

In order to ensure the safety of the rider, the HIMO Z16 adopts dual disc brake system which is an impressive one, unlike most e-bikes which use drum brake at the rear. The Z16 also utilises high wear-resistant CST tire which is similar to what you’ll find on professional electric vehicles. The tires also have a strong grip which prevents skidding and help achieve excellent braking effects. The headlight and brake lights are located on the front and rear part of the mid-frame. There is also a red reflector under the seat to ensure the bike is visible to traffic from behind at night.Himo Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle

Due to the national standard in China, the HIMO Z16’s speed doesn’t exceed 25km/h. The bike is available in four stylish colours which both male and female folks will find appealing.Himo Z16 Foldable Electric Bicycle

For  2,499 Yuan (~$352), this is indeed an amazing bike that delivers impressive value at an amazing price. There is no word as to when this model will be available outside China. However, since the Himo H1 was launched on Indiegogo recently, the Z16 may also become available on the crowdfunding platform in no distant time. Meanwhile, you can check out more pictures of the Himo Z16 e-bike from below.

Mi Soundbar 2 and Mi Treadmill gets Bluetooth Certification

Two new Xiaomi products have received Bluetooth certification by the Bluetooth SIG. The two devices are a soundbar and a treadmill and were certified a few days ago.

Xiaomi currently has a soundbar that is sold in India and China, so this should be a successor to it. The certificate reveals the product name is “2.1 Soundbar” and it has the model number MDZ-35-DA. The model number is actually similar to that of the Redmi Soundbar 2.0 (MDZ-34-DA) that received its own certification last month. This should be an indication that both products are closely related.

Xiaomi Mi Soundbar

The new Xiaomi soundbar surprisingly supports Bluetooth 4.0 and not the more recent Bluetooth 5.0 protocol. It should launch first in China before making its way to other markets.

Alongside the soundbar, the Bluetooth SIG also certified the Mi Treadmill which has model number MJPBJ01KST. The description says it is foldable which isn’t a first for a Xiaomi treadmill. It will connect via Bluetooth 4.2.

Mi Treadmill

Going by Xiaomi’s other treadmills, this should connect to your phone to sync your exercise sessions and may also have a controller to adjust the speed.

Both products might launch anytime which can be soon or even much later. Nevertheless, once they are announced, we will let you know.

TSMC is working on 2nm Chips, Expected to Release by 2025

The performance and efficiency of chipsets depend on the number of transistors they have. To accommodate more transistors on a chip, their size needs to be reduced. This is known as ‘Moore’s Law’, which states the number of transistors on microprocessors should double every two years by decreasing their size. The current-gen best processors are built-on 7nm process, which is expected to be replaced with 5nm later this year. However, even before that, TSMC has now revealed to have started R&D for 2nm chips.

In its recent annual report to shareholders, TSMC has announced that it has kick-started research and development for the 2nm process in 2019 itself. The semiconductor manufacturing company is yet to deliver Apple’s next-gen 5nm mobile chip slated to release in the last quarter of this year.

For context, the 2nm chips will be able to hold 3.5 times more transistors than the now best 7nm chipsets available in the market.

Additionally, it also revealed the roadmap for 3nm chips lask week, which is progressing as planned. The first batch of risk production is expected to begin in 2021, followed by volume production in the second half of 2022.

The only major competitor for TSMC is Samsung, however, it is yet to mass-manufacture 5nm chips and has even delayed 3nm chipsets to 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, although TSMC has started working on 2nm chips, we won’t be able to see it anytime soon. The earliest we can expect it to be ready for the masses is 2025.
