Oppo A9 2020 Vanilla Mint color option to soon go official in India

Just a couple of weeks after Oppo launched the A9 2020 smartphone in Gradient White color, the company has now teased the launch of a new color variant in India — Vanilla Mint. Last month, the company had slashed the phone’s pricing by ₹1,000, bringing down the starting price of the device to ₹15,990 (~$224) instead of ₹16,990 (~$238).

Currently, the smartphone is available in three colors — Marine Green, Space Purple, and colors. Now, Oppo A9 2020 has got a new color variant in the Indian market — Gradient White. It is now available for purchase through offline stores in the country.

The 4GB RAM variant is priced at ₹15,990 (~$224) while the 8GB RAM model costs ₹19,990 (~$280). Interestingly, this new variant is now yet available for purchase through online retail stores in the Indian market.

The smartphone comes with a 6.5-inch waterdrop Sunlight Screen which offers a screen resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels and has a screen-to-body ratio of 89 percent. There is also a Blue Shield that filters harmful blue light and protects users from eye fatigue.

Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 chipset and packs 4GB or 8GB RAM and both the variants pack 128GB UFS 2.1 internal storage. It also comes with a dedicated microSD card slot for expanding the storage capacity up to 256GB.

In the camera department, it comes with a quad-camera setup on the back which consists of a 48-megapixel f/1.8 primary camera, an 8-megapixel f/2.25 aperture with 119-degree ultrawide angle camera, and two 2-megapixel cameras with f/2.4 aperture.

On the front side, it features a 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture with AI beautification. The phone has electronic image stabilization and an Ultra Night Mode 2.0 that also works with ultrawide angle photos.

Features on the Oppo A9 2020 include stereo speakers and Dolby Atmos. The smartphone runs Android 9 Pie-based ColorOS 6.0.1 with features such as Game Boost 2.0 for smoother and more responsive gaming, HyperBoost, Game Space, Game Assistant, and a Riding Mode that mutes all notifications, declines calls and automatically texts back callers.

The device also comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The smartphone is powered by a 5,000mAh battery which also supports reverse charging. The company has not mentioned fast charging support, which is a bit disappointing.

Honor Play 4X gets update 5 years after release

When it comes to updates, Android phones trail behind iPhones. A lot of manufacturers seldom go beyond the first year of release for a lot of their models most especially entry and mid-range devices. However, there are usually some exceptional cases. One of them is Honor Play 4X which was released back in October 2014 and recently got an update.

According to a Weibo post by a user called Changan Digital King, the Honor Play 4X recently received an update in China. It is a small update weighing in at just 57.74MB and a rough translation says it is an optimization for a feature. There is no security update and the Android version is still unchanged.

The Honor Play 4X has a 5.5-inch 720 x 1280 display with thick bezels and capacitive buttons. It is powered by the Kirin 620 processor paired with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. It has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera. It also packs a 3000mAh battery. When it launched, it ran Android 4.4.2 Kitkat out of the box.

Live images of Samsung Galaxy S11 display panel leak

Samsung’s next-generation Galaxy S11 series is not expected to be released until next year. But curiously, the models have been subject of leaks and rumours for a while now. The leaks keep streaming in, the latest of which is a couple of images of the front panel of the Galaxy S11.

The photos show the top and bottom edges of the display panel or better put, the touchscreen digitizer panel that lies on top of the AMOLED screen. The most prominent feature on board is the punch-hole design which is located at the centre. The touchscreen design looks similar to that of the Galaxy Note 10 with just a single selfie camera. The Galaxy S11+ is expected to have a different design with the dual-selfie camera setup.

The bottom half of the display equally reveals a much trimmed down bezels on the chin. However, the bezel is slightly wider than that on the sides. This panel also shows the Galaxy S11 will retain the traditional curved-edge design that Samsung Galaxy models are known for.

As a reminder, the Galaxy S11 is expected to come with a 6.7-inch display while the S11+ will have a slightly bigger 6.9-inch display. Tipster Evan Blass had revealed that the two smaller editions come in 4G LTE and 5G editions, but the largest model (S11+) will come with 5G support. A recent report had claimed that the S11 and probably S11+ phones will carry support for 120Hz refresh rate.

Further, the Galaxy S11 series is expected to come in Exynos 9830 and Snapdragon 865 versions as well as up to 12GB RAM. When it comes to photography, the Galaxy S11 could be equipped with quadruple rear cameras with 108-megapixel main lens and a 48-megapixel sensor. The S11 is expected to carry support for 10x lossless zoom and up to 100x hybrid zoom. Also, the S11 is rumoured to arrive with 25W fast charging technology and a 4900mAh battery. It is speculated that the Galaxy S11 phones will go official on February 11.

Xiaomi to hold its first event in Japan on December 9

Early last month, we reported that Xiaomi is planning to enter the Japanese market by 2020. Technically, plans have already been underway and it appears the Chinese giant will be making its formal entry into Japan earlier than expected.

The official Xiaomi Japan Twitter account has announced that there will be an event on December 9. A rough translation of the caption for the tweet says the company is arriving in Japan earlier than planned and will officially enter into the market on December 9.

At the moment, we do not know which products will be announced on that day but we are pretty sure the account will drop teasers as the event draws closer.

A lot of folks are excited about Xiaomi’s entry into the market as it may herald the launch of fully-waterproof Xiaomi phones. Water-resistance is a common feature of phones sold in Japan, so we expect Xiaomi will want to cater to the market by adding it to its devices.

Xiaomi has just unveiled a multi-function device that is capable of being used as a flashlight, desk lamp and even as a power bank in emergency cases. In other words, it is a multi-purpose flashlight that can be used with a degree of flexibility.

Xiaomi Mi 9 Delisted from Site, Mi 10 just around the corner?

In February 2019, Xiaomi launched the Mi 9 which was the companies latest flagship smartphone entry at the time. It arrived equipped with top-notch spec offering high-end performance. However, since then the device is now no longer available on the official Xiaomi website. The move from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer could indicate that the Mi 10 might be arriving soon.

Lei Jun, the Chairman and CEO of Xiaomi group, stated at the Xiaomi Core Supplier Conference that the company will launch 5G capable smartphones next year. The tech giant has completed its sale of 4G smartphones inventory and the removal of Mi 9 from the website is a subtle confirmation of the statement. The Mi 9 has yet to complete a year of sale and its recent delisting could also imply that Xiaomi may be looking for an early Mi 10 launch that will be capable of 5G networking.

Recently, a Xiaomi 5G smartphone with the model number “M2001J1E” appeared at the China Quality Certification Center. It is reported that the handset in question is the latest flagship entry, the Xiaomi Mi 10. According to the certification, the Mi 10 is equipped with an “MDY-11-EB” charging model which means it supports up to 66W fast-charging. Unfortunately, finer details are still unknown and it is hard to determine exact specifications just on certification alone.

Since the Mi 9 arrived with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC, the Mi 10 could also sport the latest model of the 800 series chipset. Keep in mind, these are speculations and we will have to wait for an official announcement for confirmation.

Intel: Selling 5G Modem Business to Apple was a Multi-Billion Dollar loss

Earlier this year, Intel sold its lead 5G mobile modem developer to Apple that marked the former’s exit from the market. The news broke in July and had seen the Cupertino based company sign an agreement with the chip manufacturer to acquire its 5G modem division for 1 Billion US Dollars.

According to Intel, the evaluation of just a billion dollars is grossly undervalued. The company stated it as a ‘multi-billion dollar loss’ and has accused Qualcomm with its anti-competitive business practices that had forced them to leave the market. Intel was quite public and clear with its reasons, citing ‘no clear path to profitability and positive return’ as a major factor. The reason behind these issues is alleged to be Qualcomm, who is also currently facing an antitrust probe from the FTC.

Recently, Qualcomm has been trying to challenge the ruling by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). At the same time, Intel filed a brief at the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals that supports the FTC’s decision against Qualcomm. In the brief, Intel explains that the accused mobile chipmaker giant has been crafting licensing arrangements for its CDMA and LTE intellectual property in a way that hampers and disrupts potential competitors.

In other words, Qualcomm implements a ‘no license, no chip’ policy that prevents smartphone manufacturers from buying Intel’s or other competitors’ chips unless they agree to a patent deal. This deal made it much more expensive for OEMs to enter supply agreements with Qualcomm’s rival chipmakers. Additionally, Intel also pointed at Qualcomm’s antitrust fines that measured in billions of dollars in multiple countries all across the globe.

In a blog post, Intel’s General Counsel stated that “Intel suffered the brunt of Qualcomm’s anti-competitive behaviour, was denied opportunities in the modem market, was prevented from making sales to customers and was forced to sell at prices artificially skewed by Qualcomm.” Intel said it “invested billions of dollars, hired thousands, acquired two companies and built innovative world-class products that eventually made their way into Apple’s industry-leading iPhones, including the most recently released iPhone 11.”

Unfortunately, the agreement with Apple didn’t make things any better for Intel. The former has now settled all litigations with Qualcomm which is now the sole supplier of modems for the iPhones for the next 6 years. Lastly, Intel is still in the market selling its 4G modems in PCs, but the chipmaker is essentially leaving the modem business in the near future. The recent deal with MediaTek to integrate its 5G modems on Intel-based laptops is a sign of this.

Oppo VP teases more Oppo Reno 3 Pro 5G information

OPPO Vice President Shen Yiren went to Weibo to tease more news regarding the upcoming Oppo Reno 3. While nothing really new has been shown, with do get reaffirmation for previous teasers and leaks. The only bit of new information we’ve received the device’s weight which is rated as 17_g, giving us a rough idea with completely spilling the beans.

As has already been previously revealed, the device is equipped with a 7.7mm chassis with a glass rear. The device is equipped with a 4,025mAh battery that will probably arrive with fast charging support. It will be a dual-mode 5G smartphone that could be powered by the Snapdragon 735 5G chipset.

We also know that the Oppo Reno 3 will be the first device to feature the company’s latest ColorOS 7. The display punch-hole could be housing a 32-megapixel selfie snapper. The rear shell of the phone may house a quad camera setup with a 60-megapixel main lens. The device may come with up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of native storage.

Hopefully, the company will also unveil the Reno 3 smartphone alongside the Reno 3 Pro later this month. Most of the 5G phones that are available in China are flagship devices right now, so the influx of lower cost 5G devices like the Reno 3 series, Vivo X30 series, Redmi K30 lineup and Realme X50 powered by mid-range chipsets will finally bring some much needed value and competition to the 5G segment.

Redmi Note 8 breaks 10 million unit sales, company teases Redmi K30

Earlier today, Redmi officially announced that the global sales of the Redmi Note 8 series has exceeded 10 million units for 3 consecutive months. To put this into perspective, this means that an average of 110,000 units were sold every day. This is excellent for Redmi, breaking the 10 million sales record a whole month quicker than the Redmi Note 7 did.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro features a 6.53-inch IPS LCD display with a waterdrop notch. It comes with a Helio G90T processor with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. A 64MP camera sits on the back of the phone along with an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 2MP macro camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. It also features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, IR blaster, audio jack, NFC, and a 4500mAh battery with support for 18W fast charge.

On top of that, the Redmi Note 8 comes with a 6.39-inch FHD+ LCD display and Snapdragon 665. There’s a quad-camera setup at the back featuring a 48MP f/1.79 aperture lens, an 8MP 120° wide-angle shooter, a 2MP macro camera and another 2MP depth sensor. It’s an excellent device, and it’s no surprise that it’s doing so well.

In addition to this, the company also informed that something related to the upcoming Redmi K30 will be announced tomorrow, though we aren’t sure what exactly we’ll see.

We already know that the Redmi K30 will be equipped with a 6.6-inch IPS LCD display with dual punch-hole design. The display of the phone will support 120Hz refresh rate as it was in seen in the leaked shots of the Redmi K30. It will be fueled by Snapdragon 730G processor which is the same SoC that fueled the predecessor Redmi K20 phone, though a possible 5G variant could see the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 chipset.

The pill-shaped punch-hole of the Redmi K30 has a 32-megapixel primary lens that is accompanied by a ToF sensor for 3D face recognition. The rear shell of the phone h a quad camera setup that includes a 60-megapixel Sony IMX686 primary shooter, an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor, a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 2-megapixel sensor.

The new device will include a massive 5,000mAh battery that supports 27W fast charging. The MIUI 11 based Android 10 OS will come preloaded on the device. Other features of the phone include 64GB of internal storage for starting variant, 3.5mm audio jack, IR blaster and NFC.

Vivo U20 to go on sale in India today; pricing starts at ₹10,990 ($153)

Vivo U20, a new U-series smartphone from the Chinese brand in the Indian market, was made official a couple of weeks ago. The phone went on sale in India for the first time on 28th November and now it’s up for grab today.

Today, the Vivo U20 smartphone will be available for purchase in India exclusively through online marketplace Amazon and Vivo e-shop, with sale beginning at 12:00 PM IST. The base model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage is priced at ₹10,990 while the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage model costs ₹11,990. The phone comes in two color options – Racing Black and Blaze Blue.

The smartphone features a 6.5-inch FHD+ 2340 x 1080p IPS LCD screen and a 90.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chipset.

In the camera department, the device features a triple camera setup on the back consisting of Sony IMX499 16MP primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture while there are two other sensors include a 120° degree 8MP super wide-angle lens and a 2MP macro lens that can shoot objects as close as 4cm.

Foxconn reportedly receives order for over 50 million Huawei 5G smartphones

Huawei, despite all bans and problems, is still the world’s 2nd largest smartphone company only behind Samsung in terms of sales. It’s to be expected that with this many shipments, the Chinese giants probably also have a huge amount of devices constantly being manufactured behind the scenes, and a report from Taiwan Times corroborates this.

According to the report, infamous manufacturing and assembly plant Foxconn have received the full order for next year’s Huawei 5G smartphones. Huawei’s apparently ordered more than 50 million units, which is an absolutely massive number for a 5G smartphone considering how 5G devices are still a fairly niche segment of the market.

Smartphone sales have been on the decline for Q3 2019, but Huawei are the sole exception to this. The Chinese giants recorded double-digit sales growth despite the slowing smartphone market, and was the only one of the top-five global smartphone vendors with double-digit growth in smartphone sales in the third quarter of 2019. It’s not hard to see why they’re so confident, they’ve got the numbers to back things up.

Amidst the US-China trade disputes, Huawei is still facing issues with the US Government. The US Government is currently issuing a license for such trade and has received 300 applications. So far, about half have been rejected while the other half have been approved, such as Microsoft supplying Windows 10 OS to their laptops. Things are looking up for Huawei, though we doubt everything will go so smoothly.

Huawei Nova 6 5G hands-on images appear before this week’s launch

The Huawei Nova 6 5G will debut on Dec. 6 in China. The smartphone is now up for reservations in the home market through the official online store of Huawei i.e. Vmall. The official listing has not only revealed the render of the Nova 6 but also confirmed that it will be available in 4G and 5G editions. A few hands-on images of the Huawei Nova 6 5G smartphone has appeared on Weibo to reveal its appearance in real.

As it can be seen, the new images show the blue colored edition of the Huawei Nova 6 5G. The front side of the device features a notch-less display that has a pill-shaped cutout for two front-facings at the upper-left corner. With a slightly thick chin, the smartphone seems to offer a good screen-to-body ratio.

Huawei Nova 6 5G Specifications (Rumored)

The Vmall appearance of the Huawei Nova 6 5G has revealed that it will come in four color options such as Black, Blue, Purple-Blue gradient and Red model that has Nova 6 imprinted on the back. Xiaomi makes big organizational changes; co-founder departs

Xiaomi, one of the leading smartphone brands from China, which has now expanded its operations far beyond smartphones, has made some major changes in its organization, especially related to the company’s executives.

One of the founders of the company and Senior Vice President, Li Wanqiang, confirmed that he is departing from the company. Three other executives — Lin Bin, Wang Xiang, and He Yong were promoted while two executives Zhou Shouzi and Lu Weibing were moved to important business lines for rotation.

Explaining these major organizational changes, Lei Jun, Founder and CEO of Xiaomi said that the company needs more powerful group management support and the organizational innovation is the reason behind rotation mechanism. He believes that this is necessary as the company gears up for the next year, which the company is considering crucial because of the growth in 5G and AIoT areas.

As for the departure of Li Wanqiang, one of the founders of Xiaomi, Lei Jun expressed gratitude and thanked him for his long-term contributions since the company’s founding. He led several projects at the company, including MIUI, Xiaomi.com, Xiaomi Brand Market System, and some other businesses. This led to indelible contributions in many areas such as business model verification and implementation, corporate culture and brand building.

Xiaomi recently revealed its financial report for the third quarter of this year (Q3 2019). The company reported total revenue of 53.7 billion yuan, a record high and an adjusted net profit of 3.5 billion yuan, which has exceeded market expectations.

The company currently ranks fourth in terms of smartphone market share in the world and the company has been performing extremely well in the international markets. In the Indian market, it is dominating the market since past few quarters and the company’s shipments in Western European market has increased by 90.9 percent year-on-year.
