OnePlus 3 & 3T receive their Final Security update, ends official support

OnePlus 3 and 3T are one of the best supported Android smartphones in the market today. The two models launched way back in 2016, garnered tremendous popularity for their hardware and software support. The company even upgraded it to Android Pie version earlier this year. But the latest security update will be the final official update to both these devices.

OnePlus 6 vs OnePlus 3T design

OnePlus is currently in the process of sending out an OTA update to the OnePlus 3 and 3T models with the October 2019 security patch and an updated version of Google apps. But this will be the last update from the company, ending its official support after more than three years. The update is being rolled out in stages and some users will likely have to wait for a few days to receive it.

Even without official support, there are multiple third party ROM options available for both these devices right now. We already have ROMs like Lineage OS and Nitrogen OS in development that brings Android 10 to these devices. Also, in the OpenEars forum held at Goa, India earlier this year, OnePlus promised to actively promote custom ROMs for EOL (End Of Life) devices. So OnePlus 3 and 3T still likely has a year or two in terms of unofficial support.

As for the existing devices, OnePlus has already rolled out Android 10 with the October security patch to all of its 2019 models, including the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro. Only the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G model is left out of this lot since the new Android version will be rolled out to the device in Q1 2020.

After third extension, Huawei asks the U.S. to stop the unfair treatment

The United States government has today yet again extended Huawei the benefits provided to the Chinese giant amid ban on the company because of the on-going US-China trade war.

Commenting about this, the company said that while the substantial impact on Huawei’s operations will be limited because of this temporary relief, this will not change the fact that Huawei has been treated unfairly.

Further, the company said that they believe that the more than Huawei, damage to the United States is more. It added that this will not only will it cause huge economic losses to the US-based companies that does business with Huawei, but it also undermines cooperation and mutual trust in global supply chains.

The company also called on the United States government to stop the unfair treatment of Huawei and remove Huawei from the Entity List that effectively banned the company. The extension to the temporary relief is reportedly granted to support the existing infrastructure built by Huawei in the United States.

This new 90-day reprieve also allows Google to support Huawei’s existing Android-based smartphones. However, this extension does not apply to new models, so smartphones like the Mate 30 Pro won’t still be able to run Google applications.

Foldable smartphones are valuable but prices need to be slashed: Strategy Analytics

The much awaited foldable smartphones have finally gone official this year and have also been well-received in terms of sales by the early adopters. However, a new report from Strategy Analytics claim that the acceptance will grow if the prices gets slashed.

The new report from the User Experience Strategies group at Strategy Analytics has found that the perceived value of the foldable form does not outweigh the added cost. The report adds that the idea of having a larger-displayed smartphone in a portable size is perceived as valuable to the vast majority but willingness to pay extra for a foldable device does not align with the desire to purchase one.

It also adds that unless a foldable phone has a wider folded state, entering text when closed is too cumbersome, forcing users to utilize two hands to enter text, when in the opened state. It further states that use cases need to be adequately demonstrated for consumers to fully understand and appreciate the potential for a foldable phone.

Currently, there are two foldable smartphones in the market — Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. Both the smartphones are now available for purchase in select countries for a price close to $2,000, which is considerably more than the traditional flagship phones.

Huawei P40, P40 Pro to debut globally in 2020

Huawei had debuted the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro flagship phones in September. These Mate 30 series haven’t hit markets outside of China since they do not feature Google Mobile Services (GMS) all because of the US trade ban on Huawei. However, a fresh report on The Information reveals that Huawei will be releasing the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro smartphones in global markets in 2020.

In China, Android smartphones do not feature apps by Google. However, the scenario quite different outside of China since all Android devices is equipped with GMS. The US trade ban has been extended by 90 days. This arrangement makes it possible for Huawei to work with the firms in the U.S. with some restrictions. Huawei is to yet to receive a green signal on providing its future Android phones with GMS.

If the company is working on the global release of Huawei P40 and P40 Pro, there could be a possibility that the ban will be over by the time P40 series arrives in global markets. If it happens, Google may issue CMS certifications for forthcoming Huawei devices.

Another thing that Huawei can do is launch the P40 and P40 Pro in the global markets with its own Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) as a replacement for GMS. However, HMS won’t give access to Gmail, Google Photos, Google Drive and so on. Huawei may develop its own apps or partner with third-party firms to build apps that can work similarly as those found on the GMS. However, Huawei will be facing a daunting task of readying HMS with all the required GMS counterparts.

Huawei has recently released the Honor 9X in the global markets after the US trade ban took effect. The device is loaded with GMS. It was made possible by rebranding the existing Huawei P Smart Z phone as Honor 9X. The P Smart Z had debuted before the ban was imposed on Huawei. When Google certifies a device to support GMS, the license is attached to the service provider and model number of the device for a particular region. The certification requires the device to under certain tests like Mobile Application Distribution Agreement (MADA), Android Compatibility Test Suite (CTS), Google Mobile Services Test Suite (GTS) and Vendor Test Suite (VTS) that mainly pertains to the version of Android OS and the hardware that is equipped with. Google only cares whether the hardware and software of the devices meet the requirements of GMS. It means smartphone OEMS can change those hardware components that are tested during the GMS licensing without notifying Google. Such devices can have a different exterior design.

Huawei P30 Pro
Huawei P30 Pro

This strategy allowed Huawei to make use of the same license for the Honor 9X that it was granted for P Smart Z. Hence, the company could launch the Honor 9X with a different appearance and specs than the P Smart Z with GMS onboard. Both phones have identical specs, and the only major difference is that the Honor 9X has better rear cameras. Huawei may employ the strategy with Huawei P40 and P40 Pro phones. If the trade ban continues, the Chinese firm would be able to acquire new GMS licenses for P40 series. Hence, the for, may use the GMS license for Huawei P30 and P30 Pro to launch new phones as P40 and P40 Pro along with Google apps. By this, the company won’t be violating the trade ban. However, the P40 series may carry flagship pricing a rehashed version of P30 series.

  • New Icons and smoother animations: With the latest MIUI 11, Xiaomi has tweaked the look of the icons found in the UI and they now have a minimalist yet appealing look. Huawei receives yet another 90-day temporary extension from export ban

As expected, the U.S. government has extended Huawei’s temporary export license for another 90 days. This will be the third 90-day temporary extension granted to the Chinese telecommunications giant, ever since it was placed under the U.S. Entity list which barred U.S. companies from trading with Huawei.

Huawei Mate 30 Pro featured 01
Huawei Mate 30 Pro is one of the best smartphones in the market today but does not come with Google apps

Huawei’s last 90-day extension expired yesterday, so this announcement was timely. According to the Trump administration, the extension is granted to support the existing infrastructure built by Huawei in the U.S. For example, a number of rural carriers in the country are dependent on Huawei and ZTE’s telecommunications equipment. Replacing them immediately isn’t an option given that it could cost them nearly billions to suddenly shift to another equipment maker.

“The Temporary General License extension will allow carriers to continue to service customers in some of the most remote areas of the United States who would otherwise be left in the dark,” said the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “The Department will continue to rigorously monitor sensitive technology exports to ensure that our innovations are not harnessed by those who would threaten our national security.”

This 90-day reprieve also allows Google to support Huawei’s existing Android-based smartphones. However, this extension does not apply to new models, so smartphones like the Mate 30 Pro won’t still be able to run Google applications.

HarmonyOS

While Huawei’s international smartphone strategy is currently in a shambles, the company seems to be working hard with its HarmonyOS to find a workaround for Google Apps. Recently, Huawei’s Ling Hua revealed in an interview with CNBC that the company would announce its HarmonyOS strategy on November 20. He didn’t reveal what kind of strategy he was referring to but it could be anything from bringing HarmonyOS to smartphones to doubling down the focus on IoT products. You can read more about what he said about HarmonyOS and its future from this article.

Huawei confirms MatePad will come with a Stylus

Huawei’s high-end MatePad tablet will officially launch on November 25. A few days before its official release, Huawei has confirmed that the MatePad will come with a stylus as well. We don’t have any information on this stylus, however, it is likely that it is announced as an upgraded version of the MatePen stylus that was unveiled back in 2016 alongside the original MateBook 2-in-1.

MatePen MatePadHuawei’s new MatePad tablet is likely going to be targeted at the high-end market. Apart from a stylus, previous renders reveal that the tablet will feature a large iPad Pro-esque display with a punch-hole camera on the top left corner. The MatePad could very well be the first punch-hole tablet in the market. The bezels around the display also look pretty thin from the renders. At the back, there should be dual cameras while inside, you should get a powerful chip like the Kirin 990. Other expected features include 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a pogo pin connector for keyboard attachments, and a large battery.

Since the MatePad is going to be marketed as a high-end tablet, expect it to retail at a premium price tag. Unfortunately, we don’t have any ideas about its pricing as of yet.

XiaoAI 3.0 brings Google Assistant-like continued conversation feature

Google recently announced a new feature for its Google Assistant that enables it to have continuous conversation. Now, a similar feature is being rolled out by China-based Xiaomi for its XiaoAI smart assistant with the version 3.0.

Making announced during the Xiaomi Developers Conference, the company claimed it to be the first smart voice assistant which is capable of supporting full-duplex natural continuous conversation on smartphones. However, its noteworthy that the current interrupt function is only supported by two devices — Mi 9 Pro and Mi 9.

XiaoAI Smart Assistant

The new update will now be rolling out to the users of Xiaomi and Redmi smartphone users and the company added that it is being released on an “Immediate Upgrade” command.

It has also added that the continuous dialogue can be achieved with a single wake-up, and other instructions can be interrupted at any time. Using the feature, the assistant stay active and listening so that you can continue to ask follow-up questions without needing to repeat the wake-up command each time.

The function also allows users to convert call content into text when the user isn’t available or is inconvenient for them to answer the call. The artificial intelligence can also communicate the automatic reply to the caller.

Although Google had released a similar feature in last summer, it was only available for audio-only Google Home series of smart speakers. However, the company recently released the feature for its smartphones as well.

Redmi K30 5G dual-mode phone to debut in December; revealed Xiaomi CEO

Xiaomi Developers Conference was held this morning in Beijing, China today. At the event, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun reviewed the company’s progress towards launching 5G phones in the country. Jun announced that the Redmi K30 with dual mode 5G support will be made official in December.

Xiaomi Developer Conference 2019While Jun confirmed the December arrival of the Redmi K30, he did not spill any information on its specifications. Interestingly, Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing had recently said through a Weibo post that the Redmi K30 will launch next year. Probably, the Redmi K30 will break cover next month whereas the advanced Redmi K30 Pro may debut in early 2020.

At the recently held China Mobile Global Partners Conference Jun had stated that all Xiaomi phones priced above 2,000 Yuan (~$285) will arrive with 5G support. He had also revealed that the company will launch at least 10 5G phones in 2020. The Chinese firm will debut affordable 5G phones in the first half of the coming year.

Redmi K30 will be the first Xiaomi phone to support standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) dual-mode 5G. It adopts a pill-shaped punch-hole display design since it features dual front-facing cameras. The Redmi K30 will be the company’s first phone to come with a punch-hole display.

Redmi K30 leaked photo

Weibing has said that Redmi has used the punch-hole display technology as it has matured and has been stable. A leaked image of the man holding a mysterious phone with an elliptical cutout for the dual selfie cameras had appeared recently on Weibo. It was believed to be the Redmi K30. There are no leaks on the other specs of the phone.

Redmi Snapdragon 7 series phone

The Redmi K30 is expected to come equipped with a MediaTek 5G chipset. However, there is a possibility that the company may use a Qualcomm 5G chipset instead. The reason behind it is that when Qualcomm had announced the first Snapdragon 7 series dual-mode 5G SoC through a Weibo post, Redmi had reposted it and stated that Redmi will be launching the first batch of products featuring the chipset. This suggested that the Redmi K30 5G could be equipped with the rumored Snapdragon 735 5G chipset.

Huawei Nova 6 5G gets first official video ad; teases super wide-angle selfies

Just as Honor is gearing up for the launch of the V30 series, Huawei is also working on the Nova 6 5G phone. There have been multiple leaks about the phone but there hasn’t been any official confirmation until now.

Huawei Nova 6 5G

Huawei’s official Weibo account has shared the first video advert that confirms the Nova 6 5G is coming soon. The short video gives us a good look at the front of the device and its punch-hole display which houses two cameras.

The Nova 6’s punch-hole is on the left side unlike that of Samsung’s Galaxy S10+ which has its own on the right. The bezels are not completely gone as there is still a bit of chin.

The phone’s volume rocker is visible on the right frame and just right after it, you can see the break in the frame where the indentation created for the side-mounted fingerprint scanner/power button.

At the end of the video, Huawei reveals the Nova 6 5G will be able to shoot 105° super wide-angle selfies, no tanks to its secondary selfie camera.

A leak from earlier this month revealed the Huawei Nova 6 5G will have an LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the Kirin 990 processor and will have a 4000mAh battery with support for 40W SuperCharge fast charging. Its dual front-facing cameras are reported to be a 32MP +12MP combo while the rear is said to house 60MP + 16MP + 2MP + 2MP quad cameras.

Huawei is yet to announce a release date but we will not be too surprised if it launches on November 25 alongside the MatePad Pro tablet.
