Vivo has basically got its fans covered in all categories ranging from budget, mid-range to flagship models. The company recently unveiled the Vivo U3x in China precisely on September 23 with entry-level specs. Yet another entry-level device may likely be launched soon as teased an upcoming Vivo U3 that is powered by a Snapdragon 675 chipset. vivo U3

Apart from revealing the presence of a Snapdragon 675 chipset onboard the Vivo U3, the teaser also contained the render of the device showing the rear panel. The U3 will have a triple camera setup at the rear which is angled vertically in a single module at the top left. The device also packs a physical fingerprint sensor. We must point out that the U3 looks identical to the Vivo U3x which itself is a rebranded version of the Vivo U10.

Other specifications were not disclosed but we turn to TENAA where a Vivo model had appeared with the model number V1934A/T a while back. The TENAA listing showed the phone will feature a 6.53-inch FHD+ display with a waterdrop notch design. The notch houses a 16MP selfie camera. The phone will be available in 4GB/6GB RAM versions as well as 128GB of expandable storage. The triple rear camera comprises a 16MP main shooter teaming up with an 8MP ultrawide angle sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. The device packs an impressive 5000mAh battery.Vivo U3 specs

The Vivo U3 is expected to go on pre-sale in China on October 21 but the price and official launch date are still hazy. According to rumors, it will be priced in the 1,000 yuan ($140) range. We expect more details to emerge in the coming days.

The Mi TV 5 is launching within a month, Xiaomi TV GM hints

A Weibo user has posted a screenshot of his private message exchange with Xiaomi‘s Li Xiaoshuang, general manager of Xiaomi TV. The blogger had asked when the next-generation Mi TV will be launched since the year s drawing to an end. The Xiaomi exec is said to have hinted that the Mi TV 5 will be released in no distant time, specifically, within a month.Xiaomi Mi TV Pro

If we are to take Li’s statement literally, it implies that the Mi TV 5 will be released before November 19 and that is likely to be in China. IT Homes quotes an inside source to have said that the Mi TV 5 will be released before 11.11 (November 11). Interestingly, there has been virtually no indication of a new-generation Mi TV coming. The company recently launched the Mi TV Pro but apart for the 8K support, the TV isn’t too spectacular.

Xiaomi continues to rank as the number one smart TV brand in China and even in India. According to data released by Aowei.com, the firm shipped a total of 5.4 million smart TV units in the first half of 2019. This represents a year-on-year increase of 64.9%. It may interest you to note that the Chinese giant shipped 8.4 million units in 2018. So, this year’s shipment will likely be higher and Xiaomi will want to rejig sales with a new-gen Mi TV 5. Xiaomi TV’s GM recently conducted a Weibo survey which suggested the company was planning to take on the premium TV segment similar to what OnePlus did with the OnePlus TV Q1 models. So could we see Xiaomi launch a QLED TV this year? Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

OnePlus dual-mode 5G phone will launch by the end of this year

OnePlus is among the early birds to launch a 5G smartphone with the launch of the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G alongside the OnePlus 7 earlier this year. Although the premium phone maker announced the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro recently, both models did not come with 5G  support.

oneplus 7 pro
Oneplus 7 pro

In a surprise twist, OnePlus Founder/CEO Liu Zuohu has hinted that the company will launch a dual-mode 5G phone before the end of this year. The CEO stated this in an interview where he also gave reasons why the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G wasn’t launched in China, stating that it is exclusively for the overseas market. Thus, the upcoming dual-mode 5G phone will be launched in China and may be exclusively for the Chinese market.

Liu Zuohu didn’t reveal an exact date when the device will be launched or the moniker it adopts. But he stated that it will be unveiled in Q4 2019. One thing is sure, though, the device will be a premium phone model as the CEO also added that the 5G era will not rely on low-end 5G mobile phones to grab market sales.

The most outstanding part of the disclosure is that the device will support the non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) modes for 5G. Non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) are two 5G tracks that communication service providers can opt for when transitioning from 4G to the next-generation mobile technology. The first 5G networks to roll out are NSA deployments that focus on enhanced mobile broadband to provide higher data-bandwidth and reliable connectivity. NSA mode entails 5G networks will be aided by existing 4G infrastructure. So service providers who want to be first to offer 5G speeds will start with NSA and, once 5G coverage is established, implement standalone 5G.

Further, the OnePlus is said to have hinted that the 5G phone will likely use the Qualcomm SM7250 processor which isn’t a flagship SoC. The processor is a mid-range chipset but comes with a 5G modem.

We may need to see more details to get an idea of what the 5G phone has onboard in terms of hardware. But we expect the device to come with cheaper pricing than the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. We’ll keep you updated when more details emerge.

We got our hands on the new XIDU Tour Pro and here’s our short review

In a global market choosing between products has become really hard so just imagine what a nightmare it is if someone had to buy a laptop. With hundreds of choices out there some newer models stand-out thanks to their excellent value/price ratio. Today, XIDU Tour Pro is our guest as we’ve had the chance to test it for a while and here’s our short review.

XIDU Tour Pro

The Tour Pro is among the 3 new models that the Chinese manufacturer launched this year and it is for the most part business-oriented as it sports a 12.5″ display to be more portable but at the same time hosts a full-sized keyboard that is backlit and allows you to work in low-light conditions. The design is obviously affected by Apple’s design language while the 2K display is mostly found in more expensive models.

So, a beautiful design combined with a relatively powerful Intel Kaby Lake CPU live-up to the expectations of the company when they started planning the ideal portable workstation. For anyone looking for a go-anywhere, lightweight, beautiful ultraportable laptop that will take care of productivity tasks and even handle some gaming, the XIDU Tour Pro seems the perfect choice. Is it? Let’s see what our impressions were during the time we got our hands on it.

Design and Hardware

XIDU Tour Pro

The device is made of metal and it’s pretty thin (0.62″) and light (3.5 pounds) despite the fact that it comes with a 180° hinge that allows the display to open all the way back on a table. Speaking of the display, it’s a 12.5″ one with 2K resolution and 10-point multitouch. The bezels around it are relatively thin and the screen/body ratio goes up to 88%. Also, XIDU managed to fit a full-sized backlit keyboard there too. The overall volume stays low and makes the laptop very portable.

XIDU Tour Pro

Now, the Tour Pro might be called “a workstation” by the company but it doesn’t carry the power of the common workstations we know. It is not a performance beast but it balances between performance and cost featuring the Intel Kaby Lake R 3867U 1.8GHz CPU with a top clock speed of 4.0GHz. In order to make multitasking more comfortable, XIDU added 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD which can be expanded up to 512GB more via the SSD extra slot. What’s more, connectivity is decent as it sports more ports than a usual ultrabook like 1 x USB Type-C, 1 x USB 3.0, 1 x MicroSD reader, 1 x Headphone jack, and 1 x Charging Port. Obviously, the killer feature is the 2K resolution on such a small display as the usual resolution at this price range is HD or FHD.

Performance

Performance-wise, the XIDU Tour Pro is a perfect decision for expending media content (videos/music) and doing office work. The moderately powerful CPU backed by the 8GB of RAM and SSD (not eMMC) offers smooth performance and stable multitasking experience. No problems were reported during 2K video playback on YouTube while performing other tasks at the same time.

XIDU Tour Pro

Speaking about the display of a laptop, the main problem most users face is the low brightness and/or contrast that makes it impossible to use outdoors on a sunny day. This proved a non-problem for the Tour Pro as the brightness is adequate for outdoor use. Let us add that the speakers perform well but take into account that we are talking about laptop speakers. In addition, the backlit keyboard is a surprise as the luminance is even without any dark or bright spots detected. We even tried some 2K video editing as well as some 2K gaming during the hands-on and although the performance was obviously lower than gaming or workstation machine, it was acceptable. Lastly, the one-touch power button that allows you to power on the device while performing the fingerprint authentication using the Windows Hello platform, worked well and you jump into the Desktop in just 3 seconds.

XIDU Tour Pro

Having used the XIDU Tour Pro 12.5 consistently for seven days, the overall impressions we got were positive. It is well-built, lightweight, and the body feels sturdy. The hinge is well-calibrated to allow opening the lid with one hand and it is stiff enough when using the touch display. The lid bounce is practically non-existent while the touchpad doesn’t experience the ill effects of the sluggishness.

For a student that takes online courses, the 2K display is brilliant and the GPU capabilities are a surprise. We tested Skyrim and it run well, albeit at low graphics settings. Don’t forget that we are talking about a device without a dedicated video card. Also, we used Blender for 3D design and 3D printing and no serious problems were faced there either. Again, nothing runs blazing fast but everything runs without problems.

XIDU Tour Pro

The personal favorite part of the device is how well proportioned the design is. The 88% screen/body ratio and the big touchpad show that smart design isn’t dead. And that is the real surprise here as even the design king -Apple- offers the MacBook that is obviously very well built but comes with lower screen/body ratio that outcomes in extra space around the keyboard and display. Everything is beyond organized better than a MacBook to me.

We must confess that our expectations were low prior to getting our hand on the real thing but XIDU really delivered with the Tour Pro, especially for a laptop that costs under $500. If you are in the same position and want a device with a 2K display and good overall performance, you should definitely add the Tour Pro to your list. They even have their own online store now and you can get it for $50 off using coupon Tour50. Also, you can find it on Amazon US for a total of $60 off using coupon V8E3G6RE ($30 off + another $30 off using page coupon). Lastly, it’s also available on Aliexpress while you can get coupons for more XIDU devices here.

Design

If you are looking for the most elegant and innovative design, then Oppo Reno 2 is undoubtedly your top choice. It is the only to sport a notch-less display and it integrates a shark fin motorized pop-up camera which helps to minimize the bezels around the screen. Even the rear side made of glass is very original and elegant. Further, the Oppo Reno 2 is a more compact device than its opponents. Nubia Red Magic 3S is all but elegant since it is a gaming-centric phone and it has an aggressive design. But it is a lot better for gamers since it has not only RGB LEDs, but also additional keys to improve the gaming experience. The phone is indeed equipped with pressure sensitive zones on the back.

Display

If you are looking for the best display quality choose the OnePlus 7T without thinking twice. The support to full DCI-P3 coverage and the HDR10+ standard deliver the best performance in color reproduction and with multimedia content. OnePlus 7T also comes with a high 90 Hz refresh rate that is great for gamers. At the second place, we find the Nubia Red Magic 3S which still features an AMOLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate, but it lacks the HDR10+ support. In each case you get a Full HD+ resolution.

Hardware/Software

OnePlus 7T and Nubia Red Magic 3S are the best performing phones since they are equipped with the best chipset by Qualcomm: the octa-core Snapdragon 855+ clocked at 2.96 GHz. Oppo Reno 2 is just an upper-midrange phone if we only consider performance, since it sports a Snapdragon 730G SoC. Nubia Red Magic 3S is more suitable for gaming since it integrates a built in fan instead of a classic cooling system, which helps to dissipate the heat a lot more. On the other hand, OnePlus 7T has a better software optimization and runs Android 10 out of the box, while Nubia Red Magic 3S and Oppo Reno 2 are still based on Android Pie.

Camera

Oppo Reno 2 has the most complete camera department since it sports an amazing quad camera on the back and even a good front camera with a front-facing LED flash. It has a bright focal aperture and it even supports OIS. Not many upper-midrange smartphone comes with such features. OnePlus 7T is almost at the same level with its rear triple camera, it has an even brighter aperture but it lacks a fourth monochromatic sensor.

Battery

Nubia Red Magic 3S is equipped with the biggest battery, so it should be able to last more on a single charge with most of the usage patterns. Oppo Reno 2’s battery is bigger than the one of the OnePlus 7T, but the latter fully charges in less time due to its faster charging technology.

Price

Nubia Red Magic 3S starts at €479/$534 globally, OnePlus 7T costs €599/$668 and Oppo Reno 2 costs €499/$556. Overall, OnePlus 7T is a more complete smartphone, but gamers should prefer the Nubia Red Magic 3S. Oppo Reno 2 is for everyone who does not need the best performance and display but wants to spend less money to get an amazing camera as well as an elegant design.

TSMC predicts that 5G phone sales could hit 300 million units next year

Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has projected that the demand for 5G smartphones could reach 300 million units by next year, according to DigiTimes. The company is said to base its projection on the current level of demand for 5G modems as well as premium chipsets which have kept the fab chip manufacturer’s 7nm process running at full capacity.

DigiTimes attribute this disclosure to a leaked internal report which emanated from the Taiwanese company. TSMC’s prediction is more optimistic than the 200 million units or less, that was predicted by other OEMs. Presently, 5G phones account for just 1% of the market but research firm Strategy Analytics predicts that 5G phones will rise to 10% by 2020 as more consumers migrate to 5G phones. The different projections are indications that 5G phones will see increased demand next year as more carriers launch 5G services. Strategy Analytics also projects that 5G phone sales by 2025 could surpass 1billion units globally as more affordable 5G phones get launched.

Samsung currently leads the market in terms of 5G phone sales, and it owes it all to strong sales in its home country of South Korea. Huawei could topple Samsung next year as the Chinese tech giant is predicted to ship 80 million 5G phones in China next year. That is half of the entire 160 million projected shipments which Strategy Analytics predicted for next year. China is also expected to be the largest 5G market going forward due to the early rollout of 5G infrastructures. Since this is Huawei’s stronghold, coupled with Samsung having only a 1% share in China, it is safe to say Huawei could surpass Samsung ext year in the sales of 5G phones.

Third Method to run Google Services on Mate 30 now available

Last month, Huawei released its latest flagship smartphones, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, unfortunately, both of these devices lack the support of Google services, which most of us know, is due to Huawei’s designation to a blacklist by the US commerce department. Undoubtedly, the specifications that they offer allow them to be referred to as one of the best Android smartphones of 2019.

Due to this fact, users have tried to find a way around by installing Play services on the Mate 30 which would allow them to function like any other Android smartphone available out there.

Until now we have seen two such methods which sort of are interconnected. The first one was an app called LZPlay which would allow users to install Google Play services in a matter of minutes which was soon taken down. Although not a secure approach as the installer came from an unverified developer, a large number of users still went ahead with it.

The second method was to restore their brand new devices with a software backup from another user who had successfully installed the LZPlay workaround before its removal. Clearly way riskier, as now you don’t even know where the operating system or the ROM on your smartphone originated from.

Now, Huawei fanboys have come up with the third method, which is less risky than prior options. Let us introduce you to VMOS short for “Virtual Machine Operating System” does exactly what its name suggests. It allows smartphone owners, Mate 30 users, in this case, to run an entirely separate copy of Android (with Google Services) in the main OS which acts as a host.

Google Play Store on Mate 30 Pro with VMOS
Google Play Store on Mate 30 Pro with VMOS

Windows users who have used a virtual machine to install another OS like Mac or Linux; or Mac Owners who have used Parallels to install windows would understand right away how VMOS would function on the Mate 30 lineup.

Once the VMOS has been set up on a Mate 30, as previously mentioned, users can easily use Google service. However, the caveat observed with the LZPlay workaround persists meaning no Netflix or Google Pay, but most other applications work fine. Besides, there is more issue with this method is that applications generally have considerably longer load items and it provides for a sluggish experience as demonstrated in the video.Youtube working on Mate 30 Pro with VMOS

Moreover, it is not as secure as native Google supported devices. All in all, it is a compromise to get the services working on the devices. Having said that, it is the safest option until now and has much lesser chances to be taken down like prior options.

Apart from this, Huawei is losing a lot of money as their devices are not being sold in most regions, the Chinese corporation might have a nifty trick up its sleeve. Honor which is Huawei’s sub-brand had previously gotten the Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro Google certified and the company is now expected to rebadge those devices and sell them in these regions as the Huawei Nova 5 lineup.

Alleged Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 leaks with a Waterfall display

Rumours about the highly anticipated Mi Mix 4 do not tend to cease. The company was expected to launch the handset in the month of September, instead, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix Alpha which is a conceptual smartphone with a wrap-around display. Though some netizens were still expecting to see a possible launch before the end of the year, a senior Xiaomi official shattered all hopes, after he publically announced that the company will not be launching a Mi Mix 4 in 2019.

Further contributing to its story, an unreleased Xiaomi smartphone has been spotted online which is alleged to be the Mi Mix 4. Even though the images were blurred out before being posted online, we can clearly see a smartphone box with Mi Mix branding on top.

The front fascia of the alleged Mi Mix 4 is highly reminiscent of the previously launched Vivo Nex 3 that features a high screen-to-body ratio display with extremely curved edges aka “waterfall display”. Except for the fact that this device runs on MIUI and it has a curved display not much can be derived.

Recalling reports from the past the Mi Mix 4 is claimed to have a remarkably high refresh rate of 120 Hz. Besides, it is also rumoured to the world’s first smartphone with Qualcomm’s fourth-generation ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.

Unfortunately, neither the rumoured specs nor the alleged images of the Mi Mix 4 can be verified at this stage. Henceforth, we will have wait till the time further details are revealed either via official or unofficial resources. Till that time we would recommend taking these rumours with a grain of salt.

Oppo, Vivo & Realme could soon ditch online exclusive smartphone sales in India

Preface

Xiaomi was the first company in India to sell online exclusive smartphones in the country. In the year 2014, it unveiled the MI 3 which was available for purchase only via Flash sales hosted on Flipkart.com. The company had a completely different approach towards marketing its products as the costs saved by eliminating the middlemen like distributors & sub-distributors were passed on to the consumers.

Xiaomi logoTherefore, Xiaomi was able to price its devices much more aggressively in comparison to its competitors. And it was only a matter of time until these competitors started following suit in order to stay relevant in the industry. As of today, about 40% of the smartphones sold in India are sold while online channels, out of which the most prominent ones are Amazon.in, Flipkart.com and every OEMs respective online stores.

Even though the number of devices sold online is still less than the number of devices sold offline, the gap is getting narrower with each passing day. Undoubtedly, the online sales model has contributed in making technology more affordable for the end-user, it has been a nightmare for small or medium scale business owners who have been establishing their business for years, if not decades.

Report Begins here

While associations of such business owners, in the past, have been protesting so that the online exclusivity of these devices is stopped, which would allow them to sustain their business, no concreate laws have been enforced until now. However, this might change early next year, as smartphone OEMs currently have an ongoing contract with these online retailers which will end on the 31st of December 2019.

According to Arvinder Khurana who is the president of All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA),

Realme has decided that there will be complete parity between online and offline retailers with no exclusive model, an exclusive period of launch, price or brand offers from January.

Even Oppo and Vivo have assured us that they would do something similar, though official communication is awaited,

Readers who are unaware, all three of these brands are owned by BBK electronics which is based out of China. According to Counterpoint research, these three brands make up 30% of collective sales in the India smartphone industry.

Arvinder Khurana even said that “Over 30,000 cellphone stores have shut in the past year and a few thousand jobs have been lost. We need brand support to revive offline business,”

After AIMRA presidents made the statement ET India sent out mails to India’s five largest smartphone brands which include XiaomiSamsung, Vivo, Realme and Oppo.realme-logo

Madhav Sheth, the CEO Realme India said the “company believes in fair trade practices, offering similar benefits to online and offline customers, with the same price for its products. Any offers available on platforms are run by respective retailers and not by the brand,”

An Oppo spokesperson made this statement “Having an aggressive omni-channel approach has helped us achieve healthy growth in the Indian smartphone market. Keeping in lieu of the same, we plan to continue launching our products across channels going forward,”.

While emails sent to Vivo, Xiaomi and Samsung have not been replied yet which would either accept or deny the previously mentioned statements.

OPPO LogoWe will have to wait until further developments are made to verify “whether the scheme of selling online exclusives martphones comes to an end in India or not”. we will keep you updated on the subject so stay tuned.

Google Pixel 4’s Face Unlock is Super Quick but has one Major Flaw

Google Pixel 4’s new set of sensors on top of the display was the talk of the town over the past few weeks. Such a setup warranted powerful features like Motion Sense and an ultra-fast Face Unlock.  But once the phone was launched, reviewers noted that the soli radar based ‘Motion Sense’ experience was underwhelming. Even the Face Unlock feature on the Pixel 4, which was very secure on paper, came with a major flaw.

Over the past couple of years, Face Unlock has become a huge part of our smartphone experience. But most Android smartphone makers have so far opted for a less expensive and less secure Face Unlock technology. So it was exciting to see Google’s own version of Face Unlock which was secured. But it turns out, Google’s Face Unlock has a major flaw, it works even when the user’s eyes are closed. So, if the Pixel 4 user is sleeping or even dead, Face Unlock will be able to open the phone.

Most Face Unlock mechanisms, even the ones that just rely on the front camera, cannot unlock your smartphone if your eyes are shut. For example, OnePlus 7T‘s Face Unlock needs at least one eye to be open in order to unlock the device. This is a very important feature to ensure no one can unlock your phone while you are sleeping. But Google has confirmed that Pixel 4’s Face Unlock works even when your eyes are shut and unfortunately, there’s no workaround to the issue.

Technically, Google doesn’t consider this as an issue as it believes this allows for a seamless and ultra-fast unlocking experience. But many don’t share the same feeling. BBC’s Chris Fox was the first to spot this issue. He even tweeted with video proof.

Google doesn’t confirm whether it will add an option to fix this (issue?). But given how this particular point has got global coverage, it’s quite possible that the company adds a toggle setting via a future update to force ‘eyes to be open’ before unlocking the device.

Amazfit Verge 2 Avengers Limited Edition finally goes on pre-sale

Huami has put up the much-anticipated Amazfit Verge 2 Avengers Limited Edition for pre-sale in China. The Verge 2 Avengers customized edition was launched on July 11 alongside the Amazfit Verge 2 and ECG version. The regular Verge 2 was immediately available to pre-order but the ECG and Avengers Limited Edition was billed to go on sale at the end of July. That obviously didn’t happen until now. The company cites the complexity of the ceramic body and the high processing difficulty for the inability to meet up with the schedule.Amazfit Verge 2 Avengers Limited Edition

The presale has now opened on Amazfit’s official flagship store on Jingdong (JD.com). The device is on offer for 1399 yuan (~$197).

The Amazfit Verge 2 smartwatch comes with a spectacular design manufactured using a new material different from the plastic body which the first-gen Verge utilises. It has a Microcrystalline zirconium ceramic body with skin texture and extremely high hardness. Huami says the ceramic body comes out after 35 days of precision processing and that it wet through 24 complex processes. The Avengers edition comes with a wite frame as well as a white rubber strap designed with the Avengers logo. We expect the watch face to have an Avengers theme in addition to special watch faces.

Samsung files patent for an extendable flexible display

Samsung has been granted a new patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a flexible phone. The phone extends outwards to create a bigger display on a smaller body. Samsung patent

The patent description is for a smartphone that has a 16:9 display in standard mode but when it is unfolded, it changes to a larger display with 18:9 aspect ratio when the display is stretched fully. Samsung had earlier on patented a similar design but that one is for a  smartphone which pops up in order to extend the display. In this case, the flexible display stretch from the bottom edge to roll out to its full size.

The flexible display rolled out fully to show the notch and the sensors in the front. While most of the display will be visible when unfolded, there will still be a portion that when the display is not stretched fully, the screen will not show the earpiece, selfie sensor, etc. This can provide a more immersive experience while watching videos, reading a text message, browsing, etc.

The sketch shows the flexible display hides the notch and sensor under the back panel when it is rolled up. When there is a call or the selfie camera is activated, the phone’s screen will stretch out to its full length, revealing the notch that houses all the sensors. We can’t tell if the mechanism will operate automatically or manually but it unrolls via a swivel mechanism.

Flexible screens are usually very fragile so the display and the swivel mechanism are all enclosed in a back panel which covers the frame on the left and right sides too. We can’ b sure if this design would be commercialized anytime soon.

The Rear vent on the Asus ROG Phone 2 is fake reveals JerryRig’s teardown

Last month, Asus released its latest gaming-centric smartphone, the ROG Phone 2. As we already know the device packs impressive features some of which include a gigantic 6,000 mAh battery and a 6.6 inch AMOLED display with a remarkable refresh rate of 120 Hz. Recently, the device was subjected to a teardown by the famous Youtuber JerryRigEverything that has revealed shocking findings of the design preferences chosen by Asus.

The trapezoidal plastic piece with a metal grille on its back which originally seemed like a vent to provide active cooling while the CPU is processing heavy loads, turned out to be a sham and is nothing more than a cosmetic addition.

Besides, the narrow metal grille makes it one of the least water-resistant smartphones of 2019. As liquid would seep right in, even when dripped at an angle, leave alone sub-merging it underwater. Having said that, Asus never claimed the device to be water-resistant but this could be a downer for some especially the ones who have been spoiled by the laudable IP ratings on other flagships from Apple or Samsung.

ROG Phone 2 Copper Cooling Chamber
ROG Phone 2’s Massive Copper Cooling Chamber

Nonetheless, the teardown did reveal some praiseworthy bits of the Asus ROG Phone 2 as well. While the Youtuber had to sacrifice the display on his unit to reveal this, the device packs one of the largest copper chamber found on any smartphone. For those who do not know, copper is an excellent conductor of metal, therefore, heat dissipation on the device will be superb.

Accordingly, temperatures on the device would stay well under the acceptable range even when its Snapdragon 855+ is rendering complex bits of data while playing PUBG on high settings or executing similar resource-hungry tasks.

What else did the teardown reveal? A massive 6,000 mAh battery which by the way popped right off after the pull tab was easily removed (unlike Apple), dual vibration motors to provide powerful haptic feedback and cleverly implemented RGB LED logo on the back.

What are your thoughts on the Asus ROG Phone 2’s innards? Do you think IP rating is a must in today’s day and age? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung’s Under Display Camera smartphone said to release by early 2020

Tech companies are obsessed with achieving a true 100% screen to body ratio on their smartphones. And the front camera is the biggest obstacle that comes in between this dream. We have already seen technologies such as a punch-hole camera, pop-up camera, and even a rotating camera to maximize the screen real estate on smartphones. However, future implementations are going to be even more exciting with the front camera going under the display. And it looks like we could see our first under-display camera (UDC) module as soon as early 2020 as a report reveals that Samsung is already prepping the technology for mass production.

Samsung Galaxy A8sSamsung Galaxy A8s featured
Galaxy A8S was the first Infinity-O punch-hole camera phone

South Korean media website, The Elec reports that Samsung’s Under Display Camera Technology (UDC) will make its way on to a smartphone by the first half of 2020. Samsung Display has brought two pieces of equipment to its campuses: the HIAA1 and HIAA2. The term HIAA stands for Hole In Active Area which reportedly helps Samsung to cut out a display in the OLED for the camera.

Samsung is reportedly testing the HIAA1 equipment for standard punch-hole displays while the HIAA2 will be used for the Under Display Camera technology. While the HIAA1 was brought to Samsung’s campus back in August, the HIAA2 was brought to the facility this month. Mass production of the UDC OLED panels is expected to kick off around H1 2020.

How Will Samsung’s Under Display Camera Technology Work?

The Elec reports that Samsung will use the HIAA2 equipment to create a transparent display where the UDC will be placed. The equipment comes with a laser to drill a number of tiny holes in the display to improve the transmission of light to the camera below it. The process is called Laser Etching.

Samsung’s current R&D team is focused on reducing the size and number of pixels in that area and increasing the transparency and permeability of the substrate. The current OLED substrate is not transparent and has a yellow tint.

After testing out HIAA2 this month, Samsung Display will reportedly send it out to mass production facilities early next year. A true Under Display Camera smartphone from Samsung can be expected by the first half of 2020.

The First-Gen Under Display Cameras May Not Be Great

Samsung has a lot of challenges to overcome in order to perfect this technology. Apart from making a specific area of the OLED display transparent for the camera underneath, the company will also have to work on the algorithms to effectively balance the yellow glow and slight blurriness of the photos captured from the camera.

While this might take some time, the UDC technology is expected to improve in the coming years, just like the under-display fingerprint sensor which improved after a couple of generations.

There Could Be Multiple Smartphones Featuring UDC In 2020.

Samsung would most likely use this UDC technology on an S series flagship, possibly the S11. But it is said that this technology is more likely to end up on the successor to the Galaxy Fold next year.

Samsung could be the first smartphone company to release an Under Display Camera smartphone but it could soon be joined by multiple companies. OPPO, Xiaomi, and Honor have confirmed that they are working on an Under Display Camera smartphone. In fact, Xiaomi and OPPO both have showcased their technologies a few months back.

But will they be any good? We’ll have to wait and see!

Nevertheless, exciting times ahead.
