MIUI to get Ad Switch in the next stable version for all supported models

Xiaomi’s custom user interface — MIUI had received a lot of praise from the users in the past but now the user interface is facing a lot of criticism from the users since past several months, mainly because of the company’s strategy to put advertisements in MIUI.

The company had recently announced that it will be optimising and monitoring the advertisements on the MIUI platform. This confirmed that the ads on MIUI aren’t going anywhere, despite users being furious about it.

Xiaomi Product Director and MIUI Experience Head has confirmed that the company will be rolling out a switch which will disable advertisements in MIUI. The feature is currently under development and is being tested. He has also confirmed that the feature will be rolled out to all the supported smartphone models in the next major stable update, which is likely to be MIUI 11.

MIUI Ad Switch

He has also talked about the lighter mode in the company’s browser app which will offer a minimalist user interface to the users. Last month, he had said that the company will reduce the advertisements in the user interface as soon as possible and will further improve the stability of the system.

Xiaomi’s CEO and co-founder had also said that along with reducing advertisement spots from the user interface, the company will also remove inappropriate ads that ruin the user experience. The company is also going to introduce an easy switch in the MIUI system tools to disable advertisements. So, in the next couple of months, Xiaomi aims to provide a lighter and fresher MIUI.

The China-based company had also said that it is planning to make use of algorithms which can improve the advertisement reach rate and also make sure that the ad that users see are relevant to their interests.

While the biggest source of revenue for the company continues to be the smartphone business, the software and internet services segment of the company accounted for just 9.7 percent of total revenue. This represents a marginal growth for the company compared to 9.1 percent a year before.

As per the reports, the MIUI 11 could get unveiled on 24th September in China along with the Mi MIX 4 smartphone. It seems like the MIUI 11 is currently under testing phase and the user interface is based on the latest Android 10.

Sony Xperia 5 could be the name of the smaller flagship

Sony has recently teased that it will be launching a smaller Xperia phone that fits in the palm of the hand at its Sept. 5 IFA 2019 event. Soon after the announcement, the rumor mill started speculating that it could be called Xperia 2 or it may debut as a Xperia Compact model. A Twitter user has spotted Sony testing the livestream of the event through which it has been revealed that the handset may go official as Xperia 5.

The stream also revealed that the Japanese tech giant will begin the pre-orders of the Xperia 5 in the coming week and its shipments will begin in October. The Xperia 5 along with the Xperia 1 will be reportedly receiving wireless support for PS4’s DualShock 4 controller.

Sony Xperia 5 Specifications (Rumored)

In the previous week, popular tipster Roland Quandt had shared images of the smaller Xperia phone. The tipster did not confirm the exact name of the device. However, it now appears that it could be launching as Xperia 5. Quandt had stated that the phone is equipped with a 6.1-inch display. Hence, it will be a smaller smartphone than the Xperia 1 that is equipped with a 6.5-inch display.

The 6.1-inch display of the smartphone will be offering a tall aspect ratio of 21:9 and it will carry support for full HD+ resolution. It could be an AMOLED panel and it may arrive with HDR support. Probably, the smartphone is fueled by Snapdragon 855 chipset along with 6 GB of RAM. It could be having an internal storage of 128 GB.

The rear view of the phone shows that it has a triple camera system. The tipster claims all three 12-megapixel sensors. One of them is an ultrawide lens and another will offer 2x zoom support. The phone has a side-mounted fingerprint reader. There is a dedicated hardware button the device for launching the camera. The images of the phone have revealed that it could be sporting a glass and metal combination chassis and it will be arriving in multiple colors such as black, blue, magenta and white.

USB4 is fast, powerful and ready to roll out to devices in 2020

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) announced today that the organization has finalized the technical specifications for USB4. These specs will be making their way to designers, engineers and manufacturers shortly, meaning we can expect the first USB4 products to hit shelves some time in 2020.

USB4 is the next major version of the USB, which gains a major speed boost thanks to Intel licensing its Thunderbolt 3 protocol to the USB Promoter Group on a royalty-free basis. This group includes Apple, HP, Intel, Microsoft, and Texas Instruments. USB4 will enable 40Gbps speeds equivalent to Thunderbolt 3, which is currently found in high-end computers like the MacBook Pro and peripherals.

As with earlier USB upgrades that required backward compatibility, you’ll still be able to plug old USB equipment into new USB4 ports. But USB4 requires new-style USB-C connectors — the oval ports that appear on both PCs and phones and that no longer require you to worry about which side is up.  So you may need a dongle to keep those older devices working.

Beyond speed, Thunderbolt technology is helping USB4 simultaneously handle video signals for external monitors and TVs, as well as data going to and from external hard drives. That means USB4 can be used for driving multiple displays simultaneously and multiple data applications over a single link. Additionally, as Thunderbolt does today, it will let consumers plug in external graphics cards to boost graphics on laptops.

Now that the USB4 specification has been finalised and published we can expect device makers to start to implement the interface in their latest consumer products. The first USB4 devices are expected in 2020, but we are most interested about when PC enthusiasts might start to see the interface begin to appear on laptops, motherboards and PC chassis.

Lin Bin proves the Redmi Note 8 Pro battery can last up to 2 days with 20% juice left

The Redmi Note 8 Pro‘s launched was headlined by the 64MP main camera sensor which it packs and the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset. But those are not the only stunning features of the device which was launched alongside the Redmi Note 8 on August 29. The phone comes with a massive 4500mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging.Redmi Note 8 Pro

Xiaomi’s president Lin Bin has had his hands on the premium mid-ranger and he apparently carried out a test of the Note 8 Pro battery’s durability. The screenshot of the phone’s battery usage graph shows that the phone has been running for 2 days and 9 hours and 80% of the battery has been exhausted with 20% still remaining. The phone wasn’t on standby so that is an amazing delivery but we must state the usage wasn’t a heavy one either.redmi note 8 pro battery usage

The battery usage details show the mobile network signal, WLAN, Awake and Screen on components which equally includes the Android system and system apps were responsible for the usage. So, we expect a faster slump when heavy apps such as games are in use. But with a 45000mAh battery, the phone still should take you through the day without running out of battery power.

Huawei levels several accusations on the US government including cyber attacks

Just when we thought China’s trade dispute with the US which has affected tech giant Huawei was about to be resolved, China slammed a fresh set of tariffs on US goods taking both countries back to the trenches. Thus, Huawei is still caught up in the middle of what looks to be a long dispute. In the face of the dispute, Huawei has come out to accuse the US of carrying out cyberattacks, attempted entrapment, unlawful searches and more.Huawei logo

In a statement which was meant to refute separate charges that Huawei committed patent infringement, the Chinese company claims the US has “been using every tool at its disposal” including “unscrupulous means” to disrupt the business operations of Huawei and its partners. According to Huawei, the US has instructed law enforcement to “threaten, menace, coerce, entice, and incite” current and former Huawei employees.

The company also claimed the US government has unlawfully searched, detained and arrested Huawei staff. The claims also include that the US sent FBI agents to employees’ homes, dug up old civil cases that have been settled and committed various other wrongdoings.

As if to corroborate some of the claims, an unnamed source disclosed to The Wall Street Journal that at least three employees from Huawei’s US office have been contacted by US law enforcement agencies this year. But WSJ points out that it’s not uncommon for FBI agents to visit current and former employees of a company that’s under investigation. Huawei is viewed as a national security concern and is under investigation on allegations of intellectual property theft. Late last month, the WSJ reported that the US Department of Justice probed Huawei over allegations that it stole intellectual property patented in the US, an accusation the company also denied in the press release.

Top Phones expected at IFA 2019

IFA 2019, the most important hi-tech trade show of the year alongside CES and MWC, is going to officially kick off on September 5 and it will last until September 11. Just like every year, a lot of innovative and groundbreaking tech products are going to make its debut. This year, we will even see several phones at the trade show. There are not many official confirmations but, according to speculations, we might see a lot of mobile devices in Berlin, as well as important anticipations about upcoming flagships. In this article, we collected the best phones that we may see in the following days at IFA 2019 together with all the information we got about their specifications and features.

Nokia

Nokia is probably the most awaited brand at IFA 2019 as we know it will launch at least two phones. We are talking about the Nokia 6.2 and the Nokia 7.2 which are among the leading stars of the leaks in the last weeks. HMD Global, the company which owns the Nokia brand, has already confirmed the event multiple time: it will take place on September 5 at 4.00 pm local time in Berlin. We expect the Nokia 7.2 to boast a triple camera setup with Carl Zeiss lens, but given the name, we do not expect it to be a flagship: it will probably come as a mid-ranger focused on quality-price ratio, just like Nokia 6.2 which will be a more affordable model. Both will run Android One just like almost every Android phone released by the company.

Sony

According to several sources, Sony will show up at IFA 2019 with a new Xperia phone. But its real identity is shroud into mistery. The Japanese giant usually unveils flagship phones at IFA 2019 and if we consider the latest flagship released by the company, the upcoming device should be the Xperia 2. But according to rumors, Sony will release a new Xperia Compact device which may be a flagship with compact dimensions. Or it might even be a mid-ranger. Note that Sony already released a compact device this year, but it does not belong to the Compact line-up: its name is Xperia Ace and it is a midrange phone focused on quality-price ratio.

Nubia

Nubia Red Magic 3S Air Cooling + Liquid Cooling

We know for sure that Nubia will officially unveil the Red Magic 3S at IFA 2019. In case you never heard about it, the new phone will be an upgrade of the Red Magic 3 and we are talking about a gaming smartphone. It will boast the Snapdragon 855+ chipset which is currently the most powerful by Qualcomm as well as the best one in the Android world. Nubia Red Magic 3 will also offer a 4D vibration feedback and 3D surround sound. According to benchmarks, it will boast up to 12 GB of RAM and UFS 3.0 internal storage. The rest of its specifications should be similar to the vanilla Red Magic 3, including a 5000 mAh battery and an air cooling system with a real fan running at 14,000 rpm.

Asus

Asus will attend IFA 2019 but it will not unveil a new phone. We will probably see the ROG Phone II in a variant called “Ultimate Edition”. The phone will launch on the global market with a starting price of €899. The peculiarity of the Ultimate Edition will be the presence of 12 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of UFS 3.0 internal storage. The most stunning memory configuration ever seen on a mobile phone. The phone will retain the Snapdragon 855+ chipset and a very advanced cooling system, as well as all the other specifications of the Asian version and a 120 Hz display with a response time of just 1 ms.

Huawei and Honor

We do not expect Huawei to launch a new smartphone at IFA 2019, but the company will probably give us juicy details about the Mate 30 line-up which will officially debut on September 19. Despite we probably won’t see any Huawei phone, its sub-brand Honor might come up with a new device. Consider that the company launched the Honor Magic 2 at IFA 2018 and showcased the affordable and gaming-centric Honor Play.

Samsung

Samsung may take advantage of the IFA 2019 to finally launch the Galaxy Fold: its first foldable phone. The device was retired after problems to display noticed by reviewers and delayed multiple times, but now it might be the time to finally launch it in the market. A recent report coming from Korea suggests that Samsung will launch the Galaxy Fold on September 6, that is the second day of Berlin’s trade show.

LG

Despite LG already released three flagships this year (LG G8, G8S and V50 ThinQ 5G), it is still expected to release a flagship phone at IFA 2019. We are referring to the LG V60 ThinQ which is expected to feature dual screen. The company recently unveiled Whale browser which is made specifically for dual-screen phones and allows surfing the web by visiting two sites at the same time using both the displays. Besides the V60 ThinQ, LG may also release new mid-rangers, including the rumored LG G8X.

Motorola

Various leaks hinted that Lenovo may be planning to launch a new device from the Motorola One series at IFA 2019. Its name is Motorola One Zoom and, as the name suggests, it may be focused on camera performance. It is supposed to sport a quad camera setup on its rear side, including a telephoto sensor with 5x hybrid zoom and a TOF camera to calculate depth info. The phone would run Android One just like all the other Motorola One phones. Lenovo scheduled an event for IFA 2019 called Tech Life and, besides smartphones, it will also unveil plenty of new PCs and other hi-tech products at the trade show.

Honor 20S Pricing & Availability: Everything you need to Know!

Honor 20S is the new addition in the popular Honor 20 series lineup. However, don’t be fooled by its name. The 20S is essentially a mid-ranger that is placed below the other Honor 20 models!

Honor 20S

We have already covered the specifications of the Honor 20S in detail in our launch article, so here, let’s take a look at its variants, pricing, and availability.

The Honor 20S comes in just two variants at launch.

Their pricing is as follows:

  • 6GB + 128GB – 1899 Yuan ($266)
  • 8GB + 128GB ROM – 2199 Yuan ($308)

Huawei’s Global Product Manager says HarmonyOS is coming to watches, laptops

Huawei’s Senior Global Product Manager, Peter Gauden has described the company’s new HarmonyOS as “an operating system for the future”. That future could be sooner than we think as the exec also stated that HarmonyOS will soon feature on smartwatches and laptops sold outside China.

The Huawei exec spoke to a select group of journalists including reporters from Digital Trends at a briefing on the new software in London. During the briefing, Gauden discussed the intricacies of HarmonyOS and how it will potentially shape the future of the company’s products. This, he attributes to the potential of HarmonyOS connecting most of the products we use such as TVs, fitness products, smart speakers and smartphone.

While the company isn’t ready to use the OS for its smartphones, Gauden hinted that the first products with HarmonyOS installed available outside China could include smartwatches and laptops. Huawei has its own smartwatch operating system already, called LiteOS, and elements of it have been absorbed into HarmonyOS’ micro-kernel. Thus, the successor to the Watch GT may come with HarmonyOS. However, it doesn’t look feasible that the company will ditch Microsoft’s Windows operating system for its own OS now but the Huawei exec says it will do that soon.

EDITOR’S PICK: Honor MagicBook Pro Ryzen Edition announced, starts at ¥4399 (~$615)

HarmonyOS is being promoted as “a single OS that covers everything, and works with all product types.” The operating system is engineered to communicate openly regardless of the device, and by using a microkernel system, Huawei says HarmonyOS is secure, which is a concern when dealing with Internet of Things (IoT) hardware.

In addition, with Huawei’s Ark Compiler, programming languages can be translated so apps work with HarmonyOS, and that includes Android apps, simplifying adoption for third-party developers. It’s even intelligently adaptive and will display correctly on various screen sizes, just like adaptive mobile websites, so it’ll work in your car and on your TV without looking awkward.

The details presented looks promising but we expect to find out the real potential of HarmonyOS when the US trade embargo goes into full effect, if that’s going to happen.

The Redmi Note 8 series may launch in India sooner than expected if the recent leak from Mi India is anything to go by. The Redmi Note 8 is shown to have appeared on the RF exposure portion of Mi India’s website. Redmi Note 8 Pro

The addition of the Redmi Note 8 to the list is raising hopes of an early release of the device as well as the Note 8 Pro in India. This is coming after Redmi’s GM Lu Weibing had hinted on the sideline of the Note 8 China launch that the phone won’t be launched in India anytime soon.

The Redmi Note 8 was launched alongside the Note 8 Pro in China last week. While responding to the question of when the Redmi Note 8 Pro India launch will hold, Weibing stated that the brand is working towards an India launch but that would be in 2-3 months time. If we are to speculate, that would be around October or November. Xiaomi India head Manu Jain later hinted that the new Redmi models could hit India in approximately 8 weeks time. So, this may just be an early listing which doesn’t suggest the device will be coming earlier than expected. But then, you never can tell. Xiaomi may just spring up a surprise by launching the models early.

Ulefone T2 vs iPhone XR display size comparison reveals the advantages of a large display (video)

Ulefone launched its latest flagship -T2- a while back and while many were attracted by its Helio P70 SoC, 6GB/128GB memory, and dual rear 16MP/8MP camera, it is more than that. Along with the powerful specs, it also comes with a superior 6.7″ display from Sharp with 19:9 aspect ratio. The company believes that bigger is better and to prove that, they uploaded a comparison video of Ulefone T2 vs iPhone XR display.

The 6.1″ display of the XR seems too small as the 6.7″ display of the Ulefone T2 provides a larger field of view and allows you to see content more clearly and comfortably while browsing, playing games or watching videos without tiring your eyes. Moreover, the T2 supports split-screen function that enables you to work on a number of different tasks at the same time. Convenient both for work and entertainment.

Ulefone T2

Also, bear in mind that Ulefone T2 packs 4200mAh battery with 9V2A fast charge, 8MP selfie camera, face & fingerprint unlock, NFC with Google Pay, GPS/GLONASS/Beidou navigation system, global frequency bands, and runs latest Android 9 Pie. Cubot X20, X20 Pro, and P30 will soon launch featuring Triple AI Camera

Since camera performance has become very important nowadays, Cubot has been working hard since the beginning of this year to improve the camera performance for its upcoming models. To achieve that, the company has set up a new algorithms team and has deep cooperation with the world-renowned technology 360 company. The result of this effort is the three new devices that will soon hit the market: Cubot X20, X20 Pro and P30, which will be equipped with the same AI Triple-Camera combination.

The sensor combination on all three will be the same meaning a Sony IMX486 12MP main sensor, a Sony IMX350 20MP depth sensor, and a 125° ultra-wide camera with 8MP sensor. Also, thanks to the AI scene recognition. they will be able to choose a shooting mode automatically among 16 scenes. It is worth mentioning that real-time beautification is also supported. The 16 AI scenes include Food, Pet, Beach, Building, Person, Flowers, Sky, Plant, Sunset, Night view, Backlit, Car, Text, Fruit, Autumn, and Snow.

What’s more, low-light performance is also improved. Using the latest Cubot camera algorithm, it can combine many photos into a high-quality photo with multi-frame noise reduction. From the picture below, you can see the camera strength of the CUBOT X20 Pro. Although this is just a time to shoot, it shows the details of the picture very well, and the color in the picture is also very well restored.

20MP depth camera, leading the industry

Cubot is probably the first company to use 20MP as a depth camera. Compared to other brands that only use 2MP or 8MP for depth cameras, Cubot’s choice demonstrates the work they’ve done. The results are immediately visible when you shoot a portrait or you want to blur the background in a photo to emphasize the foreground object.

125° Ultra-wide-angle

Following the paradigm of other manufacturers, Cubot jumps on-board the wide-angle lens by adopting a 125° lens on its new devices, allowing the camera to break through the narrow field of view. Whether it’s a landscape architecture or a multi-person outing, all the beautiful pictures and all the fine details can be seen without losing every inch of beauty. At the same time, the new algorithm has intelligent auxiliary composition function, so that users without photography knowledge can also make stunning visual blockbusters.

The main parameters of the new phones are as follows:

Besides the hardware and the upgraded camera performance, all three phones definitely look beautiful but that’s a bit subjective so we leave it up to you to decide. All of them will be released simultaneously in September and based on past experience, their starting price should be very competitive.

Honor 20S with triple rear cameras and Kirin 810 processor announced

Honor has announced a new member for the Honor 20 series. The new Honor 20S joins the already announced Honor 20i, Honor 20, and Honor 20 Pro. Unlike its siblings (the Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro), it is not a flagship phone.

Honor 20S featured

The Honor 20S may not be a flagship device, but it shares some features with the Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro. For example, it uses the same 6.26-inch punch-hole LCD display panel and also has a 32MP selfie camera. While the rear design is different, inspired by Butterfly Wings according to Honor, it is equally stunning. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner

The Honor 20S’s 6.26” punch-hole display has TÜV Rheinland’ Certified Eye Comfort Mode and has a screen-to-body ratio of 91.7%. There is a 7nm Kirin 810 processor powering the device with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone’s 32MP 1.6µm selfie camera boasts features such as AIS, AI HDR+, and a super night mode for portrait photos.

Honor 20S camera

The Honor 20S runs Magic UI 2.1.1 and not EMUI 9.1. It is still based on Android 9 Pie and includes features like GPU Turbo 3.0, Calorie Identifier (in-camera feature), and the YOYO AI Assistant. It also features the Huawei ARK compiler for better system performance. The Honor 20S supports dual VoLTE dual-connection, allowing you to connect to two 4G networks at the same time. You will be able to set one 4G network to data only while the other can be set to calls only; this is to prevent interruptions when playing online games.

The Honor 20S packs a 3750mAh battery with support for 20W fast charging. The phone is priced at ¥1899 (~$265) for the 6GB RAM version and ¥2199 (~$307) for the 8GB RAM version.
