Chipset maker MediaTek reports almost 17% sequential growth in Q2 2019

MediaTek has released its financial report for the second quarter of this year, i.e. Q2 2019, reporting respectable growth quarter-on-quarter basis and a minor growth when compared year-on-year basis.

The company reported that it grew 16.8 percent in Q2 2019 compared to the previous quarter and 1.8 percent when compared year-on-year. It’s consolidated growth margin also grew by 3.7 percent YoY.

MediaTek

It also reported that the company’s net income grew 90.4 percent compared to the last quarter but on the year-on-year basis, it fell by 12.6 percent. Operating income growth reported by the company stands at 93.9 percent on QoQ basis and 50.1 percent when compared year-on-year.

Taiwan-based MediaTek reported consolidated revenue of T$61,567 million and its net profit after tax reached NT$6.503 billion. EPS diluted earnings per share also reached T$4.11, up from T$2.17 in the previous quarter.

The company says that quarter-over-quarter increase was mainly due to increased seasonal demand for consumer electronics. The year-over-year increase was mainly attributed to higher sales from consumer electronics, such as IoT, ASIC, and PMIC.

The performance of MediaTek has been steady since 2016 because of the intense competition in the smartphone market and its revenue has been barely growing for over three years but the company’s earnings and margins have been falling.

However, the company has changed its strategy and is now focusing on the mid-range segment chipsets instead of pursuing the lucrative high-end market. MediaTek is now optimizing its product portfolio to reduce costs. This is the reason that its processors are still at 12nm while its competitors have moved to the 7nm process node.

The company recently launched its latest mobile chipset — MediaTek Helio G90 and G90T, aiming at gaming-focused devices. The Helio G90 series is built on the 12nm FinFET node and are octa-core processors with a combination of Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 cores, having a clock speed of up to 2.05GHz and a large L3 cache. There is also an Arm Mali-G76 3EEMC4 GPU clocked at up to 800MHz with support for a maximum display resolution of 2520 x 1080. It comes with support for up to 10GB of LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.1 storage.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 likely to feature Reverse Wireless Charging

More smartphones come with wireless charging today than before and the trend seems to be catching on. There’s another trend that’s apparently catching on among top smartphone makers and that is reverse wireless charging. And it looks like Xiaomi could be the latest smartphone manufacturer to include this feature in its upcoming flagship smartphone.

Huawei P30 Pro supports reverse wireless charging
Huawei P30 Pro supports reverse wireless charging

XDA Junior Member kackskrz from the Xiaomi.EU custom MIUI team reveals that he spotted reverse wireless charging strings in the recent MIUI beta builds. This is a strong indicator that Xiaomi will add this feature on an upcoming device, most likely the Xiaomi Mi Mix 4. XDA adds that the feature will be “turned off automatically if charging doesn’t start within 90 seconds”. This is a battery-saving mechanism to ensure that the phone does not run out of charge quickly.

RELATED: Huawei P30 Pro Has A Special Reverse Wireless Charging Case!

While the strings spotted in the MIUI beta builds doesn’t reveal the name of the device, it’s expected to be the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 4. Reverse charging isn’t a mid-range or budget feature and all the recent smartphones featuring it like the Huawei P30 Pro and the Galaxy S10 series are premium flagships. Xiaomi has one major flagship launch slated for H2 2019 and that’s the Mi Mix 4. Considering these points, Mix 4 is the best candidate to feature reverse wireless charging.

According to a recent statement from Xiaomi’s Product Director, Wang Teng Thomas, the Mix 4 will likely feature a faster wireless charging than the Mi 9. As wireless charging technology has matured, we have seen significant improvements in its charging speeds, making it a practical feature for a smartphone. For example, the Xiaomi Mi 9 comes with 20W wireless charging support, which is only slightly slower than wired charging. Xiaomi could take things up a notch with the Mix 4 by including reverse wireless charging and faster-charging speeds.

We still have no word on a release date for the Mix 4, but rumors state a launch anytime around September of 2019.

MIUI will reduce ads at the earliest and will improve stability, confirms Xiaomi executive

Xiaomi’s custom user interface — MIUI had received a lot of praise from the users in the past but now it is facing a lot of criticism from users since past several months. The major reason behind that is the company’s strategy to put advertisements in MIUI.

The company had recently announced that it will be optimizing and monitoring the advertisements on the MIUI platform. This confirmed that the ads on MIUI aren’t going anywhere, despite users being furious about it.

MIUI 11

Now, a Xiaomi’s product director and the chief of the MIUI experience has said that the company will reduce the advertisements in the user interface as soon as possible and will further improve the stability of the system.

Earlier the company had said that it will take them around three months to roll out these new changes to the MIUI but now it seems that Xiaomi has decided to speed up the process and many users are annoyed by the ads on their devices and aren’t shying away from registering their disappointment online.

Xiaomi’s CEO and co-founder had also said that along with reducing advertisement spots from the UI, the company will also remove inappropriate ads that ruin the user experience. The company is also going to introduce an easy switch in the MIUI system tools to disable advertisements. So, in the next couple of months, Xiaomi aims to provide a lighter and fresher MIUI.

The China-based company had also said that it is planning to make use of algorithms which can improve the advertisement reach rate and also make sure that the ad that users see are relevant to their interests.

Two new Meizu 4G smartphones with model numbers M928Q and M973Q get certified in China

Meizu, which currently seems to be in troubled waters, has two smartphones in its pipeline that have now been certified in China. As per the report, Meizu’s two new 4G smartphones carrying model number M928Q and M973Q have passed through China’s radio certification.

Currently, nothing is known about these two smartphones that have been certified but given that the devices have been certified, we expect them to get launched soon. We should be getting more information about these two phones in the coming days or weeks.

The company had recently announced that it will be launching its first 5G smartphone in the first half of 2020. Meizu revealed that it became a member of the three leading telecom operators in China — China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom.

Meizu founder and CEO Huang Zhang said in the company’s forum that the 5G device from the company will be launched next year when the market is mature enough to accept and adopt the 5G technology. He thinks that it’s not a wise move to be an early adopter of the 5G technology, especially at a time when 4G consumption is shooting up.

However, the company is going through a rough patch of time and has laid off more than 30 percent of its workforce this year so far and is now left with just around a thousand employees. Meizu has also confirmed that its well-known systems engineer Hong Hansheng has also left the Chinese company. Also, Li Nan, co-founder and Vice President of Meizu, resigned from the company earlier this month. The company is also shutting down most of its offline stores in China.

OnePlus 7 Pro latest OxygenOS 9.5.11 update brings August security patch. Impressive!

OnePlus has sent a strong message that it isn’t the king of premium smartphones for nothing. The company has exhibited its promptness in releasing updates for its phones and we are impressed. TheOnePlus 7 Pro has just got the August security patch even before the clock hit August 1 in some regions.

It is rare to see this sort of swiftness in the Android phone sector. Even Google releases its updates for the Pixels on the first Monday of each month, before other brands follow. In most cases, it takes several weeks before the security patch for that month is pushed by the OEMs.  But that is not the case with OnePlus as it may have just become the first OEM to push the August security patch to its smartphones.

The update is an OTA update (over-the-air) and it ushers in OxygenOS 9.5.11 version. Apart from the important security fixes, it also packs optimizations for Adaptive Brightness, the “sensitiveness of the screen touch while gaming”, as well as accidental touches in the notification bar while in a call (this last one is desperately needed for older OnePlus models as well). Google’s suite of mobile services has been updated to the version from this June, and the “general bug fixes and improvements” also make an appearance.

The rollout will be in batches as only a handful of users have received the update. We expect the rollout to be expanded to more users in the coming days but that is if the version is bug-free.

Black Shark 2 Pro real life AnTuTu score appears and it’s less than 500K!

Xaomi‘s Black Shark did add a second-generation model of the Black Shark Gaming phone known as Black Shark 2 Pro recently. During the launch conference, the company was quick to flaunt a 500K score for the flagship gaming phone. Of course, we have no reason to doubt the figure considering that the device packs Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset which is the most powerful SoC around presently.

However, the Black Shark 2 Pro AnTuTu benchmark score in real life has been shared on Weibo by a netizen who obviously has used the device. The message was actually sent using the device so, the AnTuTu score is likely genuine. Black Shark 2 Pro AnTuTu

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro vs Asus ROG Phone 2: Specs Comparison

The gaming phone is shown to have got a total benchmark score of 456571 points. This is significantly lower than the 500,610 points the company projected during the launch event. We believe the disparity is due to the device already running some apps, games and encountering day-to-day uses.

The score is still way higher than the 405598 points released by AnTuTu a few days before the phone was launched. It is possible that the CPU was optimised after AnTuTu got the first score on its database. A disparity of over 50K points will sure make a difference in performance. In other aspects, the Black Shark 2 Pro scored 109,193 points on the GPU test, UX-54924 points, CPU- 140041, and MEM- 71370 points.

Unfortunately, the AnTuTu score for the ASUS ROG 2 is yet to be released. So, we can’t cross-check to see if they are on par.

Samsung Galaxy A70 latest update brings Night Mode and July security patch

Samsung Galaxy A70 was launched in March this year but went on sale in April. When the device went on sale, it didn’t have the popular Night Mode on the camera which seems to make its camera output low-light shots that are inferior to those of other mid-rangers. Samsung has now corrected that with the release of a new update for the Galaxy A70. Galaxy A70 featured

The latest firmware comes with the code A705GMDDU3ASG6 and apart from bringing the much-anticipated Night mode, it also adds the July security update. The update size is quite large – 367 MB and is already available to owners of the Galaxy A70  in India. We expect the update to be pushed to owners of the device in other regions soon.

Alongside the Night mode function onboard the camera, Sammy also included another tweak which is a dedicated QR scanner in the camera interface. Other points of focus with the new update include stability improvements and minor bug fixes. Some Indian users reported that the previous firmware update brought in several third-party bloat apps which can be uninstalled but it’s still quite unusual. We’ll have to wait and see if the same process repeats this time around.

Samsung continues dominance of smartphone market; Q2 2019 Analytics show

For the past couple of years, Samsung has continued to dominate the smartphone industry with just Huawei posing any real threat to that dominance in recent times. However, the Korean tech giant remains unassailable at the top of the charts, a recent research report of the global smartphone industry for Q2 2019 by Strategy Analytics and Counterpoint show.

Both reports confirm that the smartphone shipment fell year-over-year. The decline didn’t affect Samsung and Huawei as they saw a modest increase in shipments and market share during the period.

Strategy Analytics data shows that the global shipments fell 2.6% while Samsung recorded 1.9% increase, Huawei gained 1.7% and Apple lost 0.7% year-over-year. Talking of figures, Samsung sold 76.3 million smartphone units in Q2 2019 while 58.7 million devices were shipped by Huawei. Apple managed to ship 38 million iPhones.

Samsung remains the top smartphone manufacturer, Huawei and Apple follow
Xiaomi and Oppo follow the top three OEMs with 9.4% and 8.7% market shares. Both companies also saw a slight increase in their market share. sAMSUNG

Counterpoint’s research gives roughly the same data with a bit more detail for the rest of the brands in the top 10. Samsung’s market share is around the 20% mark, Huawei nearly 16% and Apple with a little over 10% share. All three OEMs have a slightly lower market share according to Counterpoint’s research. And on the contrary to Strategy Analytics’ report, global shipments are down just 1.2% as opposed to 2.6%.

Counterpoint’s data also shows that HMD Global Nokia’s shipment grew by 20% in Q2 2019 YoY. The company clinches the 9th place in the global rankings which is a monumental achievement for a relatively new company. Lenovo and Vivo also record a modest increase in sales while LG struggles to keep it afloat. Realme’s growth is 848%, which is normal given that the company’s first smartphone was released in Q2 2019 last year.
