Xiaomi launches the MIJIA Smart Humidifier with UV-C water sterilization for ¥249 ($36)

In hot, dry desert climates, or indoors in artificially heated spaces, during winter, for instance, the humidity may drop to as low as 10–20%. This low humidity can cause adverse health effects, by drying out mucous membranes such as the lining of the nose and throat, and can cause respiratory distress. The low humidity also can affect wooden furniture, causing shrinkage and loose joints or cracking of pieces. Books, papers, and artworks may shrink or warp and become brittle in very low humidity. In such situations, a humidifier is essential. There are various types but for homes, a portable humidifier may suffice. Xiaomi has just launched one, dubbed MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier.MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier

The MIJIA Smart Sterilisation Humidifier uses Ultraviolet C light to sterilize the water before it is used for humidification. UV-C is one of the three types of invisible light rays (together with ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B) given off by the sun. It is safe for humans but is highly effective at killing bacteria and viruses by destroying the molecular bonds that hold their DNA together.MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier

Since tap water could contain bacteria and other contaminants, sterilizing the water is important. Even when purified water is kept in the tank for long, bacteria could grow inside. Thus, incorporating water sterilization on the Mijia humidifier is a good piece of engineering. Water released in the form of mist by the humidifier is clean and purified.MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier

The Mijia intelligent sterilization humidifier water tank is expanded to a large capacity of 4.5L, which is equivalent to about 18 bottles of 250mL mineral water. Once added, it can be continuously humidified for 12-15 hours. The water tank adopts an overhead open design, and the large diameter is easy to clean to prevent water pollution when storing water. The storage tank isn’t detachable, just the cover can be removed if there is a need to refill or remove the water inside. MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier

The design also includes a LED light ring around the power button while there is a thin transparent strip on the body of the tank which turns blue when the UV-C sterilization is in action.MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier

The Mijia intelligent sterilization humidifier utilises a high-frequency ceramic core atomization sheet which atomizes the water source into 1-5 micron particles and instantaneously erupts through the fog guiding channel, and the fog output is as high as 300mL/h.

The gadget can be connected to the MIJIA smart home app but you’ll likely need to connect it to the smart home hub. With such smart connectivity, you can turn on the device before you get home. MIJIA Smart Sterilization Humidifier

It is presently available on Xiaomi Youpin (source link) for 249 yuan.

Samsung Galaxy S8’s IP68 rating and GPS locator save lives of tourists whose boat capsized at sea

Here’s an amazing story of how a modern smartphone can save lives, especially one studded with features such as GPS location and waterproof build. We have covered stories of how the Apple Watch has come to the rescue of users, saving them from life-threatening situations. Samsung‘s 2017 flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, also did same for a couple of seafarers when their boat capsized under strong winds.samsung galaxy s8

According to the report propagated by Samsung Newsroom, a Canadian citizen named Jim Emdee was able to call for help for himself and his island-hopping fellow tourists using his Galaxy S8. The story goes that Emdee was one of 16 divers who had set out to visit the Filipino province of Cebu in a boat, accompanied by 4 local guides. The crew encountered turbulent waters at sea and the vessel capsized off Bogo City. Thankfully, all persons on board were able to swim to shore safely (they’re almost all divers after all).

While at sure, they discovered that all their gadgets had been damaged by water except for Emdee’s Galaxy S8. As a reminder, the Galaxy S8 comes with an IP68 rating meaning it can withstand a dip in the freshwater of a depth of 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) for up to 30 minutes. The Canadian and his companions were able to use the phone to call for help. Not only that, rescuers were able to track the stranded crew using GPS co-ordinates beamed by the Galaxy S8. Samsung Galaxy S8

Following his harrowing experience, Emdee reached out to extend his thanks to the Samsung engineering team, saying, “I really hope my thanks can make it to the engineering team as honestly it really saved us all. Only my S8 was able to connect and it worked all the way until we made it to land. It stayed alive for much longer than I thought possible, and it really made the difference.”

In addition, James Jung, Head of Samsung Electronics Philippines said, “We are glad to hear that the passengers are all safe and that a Samsung phone was helpful in the rescue effort. We will continue to work towards producing devices that can come to users’ aid when they find themselves in dire situations.”

Samsung is thus using this medium to advise owners of its smartphones to keep the GPS locator turned on if they are travelling, especially if travelling alone or in remote areas.

Honor Band 5 vs Mi Band 4: Full Specs Comparison

At the launch event of the Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro, the Chinese company also unveiled new Honor Band 5. The successor to Honor Band 4 carries various new advancements, including the ability to measure the blood oxygen level. It is an incremental upgrade over the Honor 4 and now competes with Xiaomi Mi Band 4. However, the looks and design are similar to that of the Honor Band 4. There are no significant identical changes in the new fitness band. Honor has just announced the band in China and will go on sale from July 29th. The Standard edition Band 5 costs 190 Yuan which roughly translates to $28, and the NFC enabled version comes for 220 Yuan (~$32).

The Honor Band 5 features a 0.95-inch color OLED display having the resolution of 120 x 240 pixels. It comes with a water-resistant 5ATM certification – withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters. There are several fitness features like heart rate monitor, step counter, calorie count, and newly added blood oxygen saturation monitor. The SpO2 sensor helps users to measure blood oxygen level. It is useful during trekking and doing other adventurous activities. Moreover, it can display SMS, WeChat, and QQ messages from the smartphone. Honor Band 5 comes with ten different sport modes, including swimming, running, etc. The special edition also supports NFC in the connectivity options. It’s 100 mAh battery can sustain up to 14 days without any charging.

However, the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 goes nip and tuck with the Honor Band 5. There are some differences which we will uncover in the specs comparison of Honor Band 5 vs. Mi Band 4.

Capacitive proximity sensor

There’s a little difference between both the fitness bands. Both the companies have added the best features on both the devices. It’s quite difficult to compare these devices, but still here’s an attempt to clarify some differences between Honor Band 5 and Mi Band 4.

Display

The newly launched Honor Band 5 carries a 0.95-inch AMOLED true-color RGB display with 282 PPI of pixel density.  The improvised user interface and different watch faces make it attractive. It carries 2.5D tempered glass for protection against common falls and also saves display from fingerprint touches. Whereas, the Xiaomi Mi Band 3 comes with a similar-sized AMOLED display having the resolution of 120 x 240 pixels and 24 bit of color depth. Users can even use it easily under the direct sunlight, thanks to its brightness ability of 400nits. The display on Mi Band 4 is protected with 2.5D tempered glass carrying anti-fingerprint coating.

Design

The Honor Band 5 carries the same design aesthetics as like of its predecessor. Without any notable change in the design, Honor Band 5 still fares well against the competition with bright color options. It easily fits on the hands and looks beautiful. A square-shaped fully touchscreen is present along with a home button at the bottom. Its silicon strap measures 115mm in length. Both the Standard and NFC version carries the same build material. It is available in three different colors of black, blue, and light pink.

On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi Band 4 carries round-edged display with similar corners. It’s 0.95-inch colored display with elliptical shape looks great with a feather touch button placed at the bottom. A charging port is present on the bottom with a PPG heart rate and capacitive proximity sensor. It is still one of the best generic-looking fitness band. The beautiful display makes it look better. It comes with a silicone strap for a comfortable feel.

Battery

The battery life of the wearable device plays a pivotal role in its popularity. It is a crucial decision-making metric while buying the wearable. The Honor Band 5 carries 100 mAh battery with the standby time of 14 days. Meanwhile, the 135 mAh battery on the Mi band 4 can withstand 20 days. In detail, Honor Band 4 can sustain for six days upon extensive usage. However, the Honor Band 5 can charge within an hour, and the Mi Band’s little big battery takes 2 hours to get fully charged. There’s a slight difference in the battery standby time, but we think it is manageable with SpO2 availability in the Honor Band 5.

Software

Honor Band 5 comes with a preset eight dial themes, whereas the Mi Band 4 comes with four preset dial themes. The new band from Honor supports up to 11 different types of activities, including treadmill monitoring, outdoor running, cycling, walking, swimming, etc. It can count steps, distance and calories burned.

Just like the Honor Band 5, the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 offers health features such as sleep monitoring, heart-rate monitoring, all-day heart rate checking, heart rate chart, idle alerts, etc. There are a lot of other features like Night Mode, Do not disturb, Bluetooth Broadcasting, etc. Xiaomi’s wearable band does not support blood oxygen detection.

In NFC, Honor Band 5 supports 252 City bus cards in China. It even facilitates the removal, recovery, and relocation of traffic cards. Whereas, the Mi Band 4 supports bus cards across 218 cities of China.

Pricing

The pricing of both the fitness bands are the same, but the one from Honor is a little expensive. Honor Band 5’s ability to monitor the oxygen level makes it little heftier. It is available for 189 Yuan, which roughly translates to $28. The NFC version of Honor Band 5 will retail at 219 Yuan (~$31). The Xiaomi Mi Band 4 was launched with the price tag of 169 Yuan (~$24.5).

If users are looking for detailed health metrics and more advanced health monitoring functions, then Honor Band 5 is the perfect choice for them. Otherwise, the Xiaomi Mi band 4 is also not a bad choice at a lesser price.

Honor Smart Screen reported to have a camera

Honor is entering into the TV market but it doesn’t want you to call it a TV but a smart screen because this is a display for much more than watching your favorite shows.

The Huawei sub-brand had a media briefing last week where it revealed a few details about the smart screen. Zhao Ming, who is the president of the company said at the event that the Honor Smart Screen is the “future of TV” and it will perform multiple functions including providing entertainment, serving as an information center, and a control hub, etc.

New info has surfaced today about the Honor Smart Screen. A report by local Chinese media said they have been informed by trusted sources that the Honor Smart Screen will have a camera.

We can’t wait to see what the Honor smart screen can do. There is no release date yet but the head of Honor India said it will launch soon in India (of course after its China debut).

Redmi could be eyeing the TV market next

Xiaomi is now a key player in the TV market in China. In fact, according to three different institutions, Xiaomi was the number one TV manufacturer in China in terms of sales and shipments in the first half of 2019. Now, Lu Weibing, head of Redmi, reveals the brand’s possible interest in the TV industry.

Xiaomi Mi TV 4a 32-inch

Lu Weibing congratulated CEO Lei Jun after Xiaomi topped the TV industry in H1 2019. In addition to that, he asked his followers on Weibo, “Do you want Redmi to make a TV?”.

After Redmi split off from its parent Xiaomi earlier this year, the brand has focused its energy on a number of products apart from smartphones. In fact, in most segments, the recently released Redmi products compete with Xiaomi too. We have already seen headphones, powerbanks, notebooks, luggages, and even a washing machine from the brand. It’s clear that Redmi wants to diversify its portfolio of products and a new Redmi TV could be a good addition to its existing product lineup.

Redmi’s recent smartphone releases have also been pretty aggressive. The Redmi K20 series offers tremendous value for its money, featuring the flagship Qualcomm chipset, Snapdragon 855. Further, it has already managed to sell more than 10 million Redmi Note 7 smartphones in India as well as internationally. For a brand that’s doing so well, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Redmi enter an industry where Xiaomi has done wonders in the past few years.

Unfortunately, Redmi is yet to officially confirm that it’s working on a TV product. So, we’ll have to wait for more details before we get too excited.

Huawei partners with Micromax to bolster its offline presence in India

On Tuesday, Huawei India confirmed through a press release that it has entered a partnership with India-based Micromax Informatics. The new partnership will allow Huawei to bolster its offline presence in India Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has been selling its smartphones in India since few years, but Huawei entered the Indian market last year.

Huawei India Consumer Business Group Vice-President Rishi Kishor Gupta confirmed to IANS that the company’s Indian wing has partnered with Micromax to launch its smartphones at multi-brand outlets in the country. As far as Honor phones are concerned, it will continue to sell exclusively through online channels. Huawei India Consumer Business Group Head said that company aims to focus on building a robust offline market to cater consumers in urban and rural areas of the country.

While various smartphones like Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus have grown their business by focusing on online markets, they are also building offline presence since India has a huge offline market. It is estimated that 70 percent of phone sales are conducted through offline stores.

Huawei Micromax pact

In 2018, Huawei had partnered with Croma to concentrate for offline sales and later it had also entered a pact with Poorvika Mobiles that has a large chain of stores in South India. By working with Micromax, Huawei India aims to expand its offline presence through a phased plan. The first phase will include major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Kochi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dehradun, Kolkata and Jaipur.

Micromax Informatics, Head of Marketing Deepti Mehra said the company will continue to sell Micromax phones in Micromax brands stores and Huawei will be capitalizing the distribution and retail network. The partnership won’t cannibalize the sales of Micromax handsets because it mainly sells mid-range phones whereas Huawei’s targeted audience are premium phone users.

In April, Huawei India had introduced Huawei P30 Pro flagship phone with Rs. 71,990 (~$1,040) price tag and Huawei P30 Lite upper mid-range phone with a starting price tag of Rs. 19,990 (~$289). The handset is available for purchase through Amazon India as well as Croma stores.

Honor Max and Note series will get new models in the future

After the recent launch of the Honor 9X, Honor president George Zhao accepted an exclusive interview with some media interviewers. Of the questions asked, one particular question was particularly interesting, where the interviewer asked whether we’d see anymore Max and Note devices in the future. According to George Zhao, it’s definitely possible.

He claims that while the Max and Note devices aren’t exactly their typical type of devices, the market for larger devices like these is also relatively stable. They don’t want to consistently keep releasing larger devices into the market every year however because as stable as the market is, it’s still a fairly limited and niche market. Thus, they’ve been spacing out the launches of big devices to keep things from becoming oversaturated.

He goes on to reassure fans of the Honor Max and Note series that both these lines won’t be cut off anytime soon. The only changes are their update frequency, and there will definitely be device for both product lines in the future. This is actually nice to hear after the recent news of Xiaomi killing off their Mi Max and Mi Note product lines.

What this means for us is that there will probably be a span of at least 1 – 2 years between each Honor Max and Honor Note device, which honestly isn’t too bad. It might actually be a bit refreshing compared to the current climate where devices get replaces mere months after launch. This allows for bigger changes to be made between iterations, and gives better incentive to upgrade to a new model when it eventually launches.

Meizu had plans for a bezeless device as early as 2017

A popular Weibo blogger recently shared an interesting piece of information about Li Nan in the WeChat group. Apparently Meizu has had plans to release a full screen device since 2017, but the idea and product never came to fruition. To this end, we’ve actually got some sketches that show early concepts for a bezeless device from Meizu.

The photo of the design sketch shared by Li Nan was taken on November 12, 2017 in Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai City. It shows the concept design of three different takes on full screen devices. They’re very rough takes, but they get the idea of a bezeless device across. We also get a thickness of 8mm on these, and a possible price of 3299 yuan.

According to the blogger who broke the news, the device was going to be called the Blue Charm Zero, but the idea was unfortunately cut early. It’s a shame, because according to Li Nan, Meizu had the idea for pop-up cameras long before Vivo, and they simply didn’t act on it. If they had, it’s fully possible the current smartphone landscape could look very different.

Unfortunately, it seems like Meizu’s slowing down steadily recently, and they haven’t got much to show for it. Just a couple of days ago Meizu’s system engineer, Hong Hansheng, left the company, and before that we also had Li Nan leave. As of right now, the company has yet to make any big announcements, though we hope we hear something from them soon.
