Samsung mobile shipments reach 78 million mark in Q1 2019

Samsung Electronics posted a massive 60% drop in operating profit in its Q1 2019 financial report. Global weak demand led to such a huge loss for Samsung Electronics. Whereas, Samsung’s mobile department managed to close the quarter in green with an operating profit of 6.2 trillion won ($5.4 billion). Although, it is less than last year’s total profit of 15.64 trillion won ($13.4 billion) and quarterly revenue of 52.4 trillion won ($44.9 billion). In Q1 2018, it reaped 83.3 million shipments bagging 21% of the global smartphone market.

Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S10 majorly derives the rise in Q1 2019 shipments. The company’s push to increase mid-range sales also led to better results, but it struggled in profitability on a Year-on-Year basis. It saw a decline in China for the fifth consecutive quarter.

“In the premium segment, the company will strengthen its leadership through the new Galaxy Note as well as its innovative products such as 5G and foldable smartphones,” Samsung said.

Samsung aims to fully recover from declined sales by bulging its portfolio with innovative products. Devices such as Galaxy S10 5G, Galaxy A80 and other upcoming mid-range devices are expected to improve the sales in Q2 2019. Whereas, for the second half of this year, Samsung has lined up all new Galaxy A series, Galaxy Note 10 among other devices.

On the other hand, Samsung is eyeing on improvement in its Semiconductor business. The company expects the chipsets demand to improve over the last quarter, especially for mobile devices.

“The Semiconductor business saw a drop in memory chip prices as inventory adjustments continued at data centre companies, while demand for high-density memory for mobile phones increased thanks to new flagship smartphones,” said the South Korean giant.

Huawei is giving Samsung a fierce competition in terms of sale and annual growth. The Chinese smartphone maker grew 33% last year, constituting 53.2 million shipments in the previous three months. Apple is at third place with a total market share of 12%.

Latest update brings Fortnite support to the Redmi Note 7 Pro

Just a few weeks after announcing it would work on getting Fortnite support on the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi is rolling out an update to the device that brings support for the popular video game.

Manu Kumar Jain posted a tweet informing owners of the Redmi Note 7 Pro that a new update rolling out to the phone brings Fortnite support. The update arrives as MIUI 10.2.10.0.

The update is less than 300MB in size and users can head to the Fortnite site to download the game when they are done updating. The update has been reported to also fix an issue with the speaker and brings support for 4K video recording.

Redmi Note 7 Pro users actually have Realme to thank for getting support for Fortnite. Before the Realme 3 Pro launched, Realme’s CEO, Madhav Sheth had shared a tweet revealing the device will be able to play the game out of the box. In the same breath, he mocked another device, which we know is the Redmi Note 7 Pro, for not supporting the game. That prompted the head of Xiaomi India to work on getting the Snapdragon 675 whitelisted by Epic Games.

Realme 3 Pro Review: The Best Budget Phone Ever?

Recently, Realme launched its new Realme 3 Pro smartphone. What makes the budget phone worth your money is the fluid performance, thanks to its Snapdragon 710 SoC and a really long-lasting 4,045mAh battery.

Here’s the pricing of the two variants of the Realme 3 Pro:

  • 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage – Rs. 13,999 (~$200)
  • 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage – Rs. 16,999 (~$244)

VIDEO REVIEW

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSmNeUEg9ts[/embedyt]

On April 22nd, OPPO’s independent sub-brand Realme officially released the Realme 3 Pro in India, which directly targets the Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi’s latest model Redmi Note 7 Pro.

For those who are living on a tight budget, value for money always comes first when they consider buying a smartphone. In case of the Realme 3 Pro, it has significant upgrades compared to its predecessor and monster-like hardware among its peers, which includes the Redmi Note 7 Pro. But still, is it really worth your hard-earned money? Let’s find out.

DESIGN

Compared to the Realme 3, the newest ‘Pro’ version continues to use a plastic shell. However, thanks to the special color edition, the body has a unique glass finish. Speaking of colors, the Pro keeps surprising us—the previous model had a horizontal gradient. But the new model changes the color gradient in an ‘S’ shaped design.

Sadly we find it is rather slippery when holding with one hand and easily attracts fingerprints. So a protective case is highly recommended.

DISPLAY

The screen is made up of a 6.3 inch LCD with a 19 by 9 aspect ratio and, as expected, 1080p resolution. Still, the Pro version adopts a water drop style notch. The front camera, light sensor, distance sensor, and earpiece are all embedded in it.

Also, the ‘Pro’ version upgrades the PPI to 410, which means you hardly notice any pixelization or blurriness in the screen while reading texts.

Sadly we cannot adjust the color space to sRGB or P3 but we do have a choice between cooler or warmer color temperature.

Thanks to the 90.8% screen-to-body ratio, the phone provides an immersive experience while viewing images and watching videos.

SPEAKER

As for the audio, the Realme 3 Pro comes with a single speaker on the bottom right side. And we can find a 3.5mm headphone jack on the left. This is a really friendly feature for gamers who are constantly hooked in playing games even when the phone is being charged.

You can’t complain much about a budget device’s speaker quality, however, the Realme 3 Pro actually does a decent job when playing music. The performance on the high and low frequency is average but far from ideal. However, the vocals are surprisingly clear and satisfying.

UNLOCK SYSTEM

Still no in-screen fingerprint sensor, but let’s try the fingerprint scanner mounted on the back. You hardly feel any delay and the accuracy is also great. Besides, the face ID is also available on this Pro model. But due to the lack of 3D face unlock system, I can simply unlock it by using one of my selfies.

OPERATING SYSTEM

There are not many visible upgrades in this department as compared to the Realme 3. They are both powered by the latest ColorOS 6.0 system over Android 9. Compared to the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Realme’s UI adds space in between different aspects of the UI, instead of dividing lines. This gives the UI a cleaner look.

Moreover, you will notice that all your apps have been stored in a drawer, which reminds me of a very vintage style. It is like the interface that used to exist in ancient Nokia phones.

What is worth mentioning is that we found a specially designed mode for motorcyclists. During the ride, all notifications are muted and auto-replied with SMS. The incoming calls are displayed in larger fonts. Considering motorcycles play an important role in India, this kind of localization can efficiently avoid accidents.

HARDWARE DEPARTMENTS

Finally, we have got a Qualcomm chip in a budget phone. Equipped with Snapdragon 710 processor, the Realme 3 Pro performs quite impressively both in CPU and GPU departments.

All the apps respond immediately. Instead of closing the background apps, Realme 3 Pro freezes them. So you hardly notice stutters or lags when switching apps.

What makes the phone worth your money? My answer is its outstanding GPU. The Adreno 616 GPU guarantees real visual sense and more efficient and advanced 3D image rendering, which gives me a very fluent and pleasant gaming experience the whole time.

BATTERY LIFE

This is where I find the Realme 3 Pro comes in really handy. Featuring a 4045 mAh battery, there will be no battery anxiety even before you go to bed.

And with the help of the VOOC flash charge technology and the 20W charging brick, the phone charges from 0% to 10% in just 5 minutes, nearly 50% after half an hour, and fully charged in 80 minutes.

CAMERAS

The Realme 3 Pro has a 16MP primary camera with AI scene recognition and auto face detection. The aperture of the lens is larger than before—from 1.8 in the realme 3 to 1.7 in the Pro version. There is also a secondary 5MP camera as a depth sensor that completes the dual camera setup. But no zoom or wide-angle lens are to be found.

In good lighting conditions, photos turn out to be impressive—great balance between bright parts and dark parts. The color is accurate enough with good contrast. But once you zoom in a bit, the amount of details in the picture go down.

The dynamic range is just about average but luckily I found a solution to this, the chroma boost mode makes it up. You can enable it from the viewfinder, it efficiently improves the dynamic range by stacking multiple images and AI algorithm. Certain colors now are richer and brighter but the saturation sometimes is so strong that the pictures don’t look very real.

When shooting at night, we can still notice the overexposed highlights and high noise level. Images get better when we enable the HDR or the chroma boost mode but it’s far from perfect.

The upgraded nightscape mode does better than the last generation. You can definitely notice the improvements when you enable it. Thanks to the anti-shake and multi-frame synergy, the images here have more details, a balance of optimum exposure and well-controlled noise.

The biggest improvement in the camera department of the Realme 3 pro is its amazing selfie camera. A huge jump from 13MP to 25MP and f/2.0. I really like it for its pleasant soft colors and enough sharpness at the same time.

Turning on the portrait mode, we find some issues around the shoulder area of the person, as it often gets mixed with the background. It seems that the algorithm needs some improvements.

CONCLUSION

Overall, if you are looking for a budget phone which comes with a fantastic industry design, decent display, and great CPU and GPU performances, this is definitely your primary choice. Especially if you spend most of your leisure time on your cell phone, the large 4000mAh+ battery gets rid of many of your possible worries.

Realme 3 Pro cameras

However, I feel the camera department could use some improvement. This doesn’t mean it’s not good, as for the given price the Realme 3 Pro does have some impressive features like chroma boost mode and nightscape mode.

It’s worth mentioning that the Realme series has made a lot of efforts in introducing features relevant to its target markets like India. This proves that the company is determined to win a larger market share as well as provide better services, especially in the Asian region.

OnePlus 7 Pro camera can compete with “first tier” phones, claims OnePlus imaging director

OnePlus is all set to launch its flagship smartphones — OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro at a launch event on 14th May. The company has already revealed some key features of the smartphone, in order to build hype around the upcoming smartphones.

It seems that the company decided to mainly focus on two things for the upcoming flagship smartphone — display and camera. It has already been revealed that the phone will come with 90Hz display and has been rated A+ by DisplayMate.

Recent teasers from the company confirms that the OnePlus 7 Pro will come with a triple camera array on the back panel and a pop-up front-facing camera. Now, the company’s imaging director, who spoke with Wired, is shedding more light on the phone’s cameras.

Oneplus 7 Pro

Simon Liu, OnePlus Imaging Director, says that the camera of the OnePlus 7 Pro will provide competition to “first tier” smartphones. He adds, “I don’t think we can beat them, but the imaging world is always subjective.”

It will be interesting to see how the company has managed to improve its camera game for the flagship smartphone, given that the camera hasn’t been the strong point of the OnePlus smartphones.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will be featuring support for 10x digital zoom that too without Time-of-Flight (ToF) depth sensor on the device. Liu also notes that OnePlus users will notice a difference between images taken with older models and those snapped with the OnePlus 7 Pro. He says: “Our pictures are a lot more detailed compared to our previous phones.”

The smartphone will come with a triple rear camera setup, consisting of a 48MP primary sensor, an 8MP secondary sensor with 3x optical zoom, and a 16MP tertiary sensor with an ultra wide-angle lens.

On the front side, the smartphone will feature a 16MP selfie snapper housed inside a pop-up mechanism. This means that there won’t be any notches on top of the phone’s 6.7-inch Quad HD+ display.

Redmi Snapdragon 855 phone may score high on AnTuTu benchmarks

On Weibo, Xiaomi co-founer and President Lin Bin has shared a screenshot of top performing phones on AnTuTu benchmarks. The first two positions in the list are occupied by Xiaomi Mi 9 series. In the same Weibo post, Bin has asked Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing to take the challenge. Weibing responded by saying that Redmi is ready for it. This suggests that the upcoming Redmi SD855 could be capable enough to record amazing scores on AnTuTu benchmarks.

In the below shown screenshot, the Xiaomi Mi 9 Exploration Edition has recorded an average benchmarking score of 372,072 and it is followed by Xiaomi Mi 9 has scored 371,878. Bin claimed that these scores are average benchmarking scores of the user in normal usage scenarios. Hence, they are more objective and fairer. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming Redmi Snapdragon 855 powered phone is able to rank higher than the Xiaomi Mi 9 series on AnTuTu benchmarks.

Recent reports have suggested that the Redmi SD855 flagship phone will be fitted with a 6.39-inch AMOLED display. Its SoC could be supported by up to 8 GB of RAM and may arrive with a maximum internal storage of 128 GB.

The Redmi SD855 smartphone could be packed with a 4,000mAh battery along with support for fast charging. It could be featuring a notch-less display embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader. The handset is expected to arrive with a pop-up selfie camera module that may include a 32-megapixel lens. The rear shell of the phone could be equipped with 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixel triple camera setup. The smartphone will be carrying support for NFC connectivity and 3.5mm audio jack.

The Redmi SD855 smartphone could be the cheapest Snapdragon 855 powered smartphone. Redmi is preparing abundant stocks of the phone to meet the expected huge demand. Some reports have claimed that the same phone could be made available outside of China as Poco F2.  The Redmi SD855 phone may go official in May or June.

Here are the top 10 bestselling smartphones of 2018

Counterpoint Research, a research and statistical analysis firm has published a report revealing the top 10 bestselling smartphones in the Chinese market for the year 2018. Surprisingly, Oppo emerged as the leading smartphone brand having five of its smartphones in the top 10 list.

The report shows that the company’s flagship smartphone — Oppo R15 was the bestselling smartphone in China for the year 2018 — taking the pole position. It was followed by Apple iPhone X in the second spot.

Bestselling Smartphones China

The third, fourth and fifth spot were occupied by Oppo A5, Oppo A83, and Vivo X21. Following them were Apple iPhone 8 Plus, Vivo Y85, Oppo A72, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, and Oppo R11s for the sixth to tenth position.

As for the international markets, the top 10 bestselling smartphones were Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, Xiaomi Redmi 5A, Samsung Galaxy S9, Apple iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, and Samsung J6.

However, it’s surprising to see that none of the Huawei or Honor smartphones made it to the list of Counterpoint’s bestselling smartphones. This is quite odd given that Huawei is currently dominating the Chinese smartphone market.

Bestselling Smartphones Globally

According to the Counterpoint report, the sales of the previous generation iPhone models totaled around 100 million units while the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR sold over 16 million units each. It also adds that Redmi 5A added 20 million units to Xiaomi’s shipments

Coming to Huawei — the company that didn’t make it in the list is said to have sold more than 13 million units of Huawei P20 Lite smartphone. However, the report doesn’t reveal which position it holds in terms of rankings of bestselling phones in 2018.

It seems that the numbers could be different for the current year. Huawei’s recently released financial report for the Q1 2019 claims the company managed to ship over 59 million smartphones, its highest ever first-quarter sales count. This year, it aims to sell over 250 million smartphones.

Kirin 985 mass production to begin in Q3; Likely to offer 20% better performance than Kirin 980

Huawei had introduced the Kirin 980 SoC as the world’s 7nm SoC at the IFA 2018 tech trade show in August 2018. The SoC was first seen under the hood of Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro flagship smartphones. Since then, it has been used by the company to power other flagship phone such as Honor Magic 2, Honor V20, Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. The Chinese manufacturer is now reportedly working on an improved version of Kirin 980 SoC. A Weibo user has claimed that the company will be debuting 7nm Kirin 985 later this year and it will be powering the upcoming Mate 30 series of flagship phones.

Previous reports have reveled that the Kirin 985 chipset will be manufactured through Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) technology. It is expected to deliver 10 to 20 percent better performance than the Kirin 980 SoC. TSMC is expected to produce the Kirin 985 through its N7 process. Apple A13 chip that will be powering the upcoming iPhones will be built by TSMC’s more advanced N7 Pro process.

kirin 980

The mass production of the Kirin 985 is now rumored to begin in the third quarter of the year, and it has now reportedly entered the designing stage. There is no confirmation on whether it will be a 5G-ready SoC. Probably, the Chinese firm will debut the Kirin 985 in August this year.

As far as Mate 30 series is concerned, there is no information available on the specs of the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones. A report from the previous month had revealed that the company has already started testing the Mate 30 handset. After Huawei Mate 20 X smartphone and Mate X foldable phone, the P30 Pro is rumored to be the next 5G-ready phone from the company. The Chinese manufacturer is also expected to announce a successor for the Kirin 710 SoC that has powered many of Huawei and Honor branded mid-range phones that have launched recently.

Realme X arriving with notch-less display and pop-up selfie camera

Last week, two new Realme phones with model numbers RMX1851 and RMX1901 were spotted for the first time on the database of China’s TENAA telecom authority with minimal specs. The images of the RMX1851 revealed that it is the Realme 3 Pro phone for the Chinese audience. The handset was recently introduced in India. However, the RMX1901 is an entirely new phone that features a notch-less display and a pop-up selfie camera. Today, Realme CMO Xu Qi has confirmed through his Weibo account that the name of the device is Realme X.

Xu Qi’s latest Weibo post was written through a new Realme phone named Realme X. The handset is described as “full screen dare to leapfrog” (translated text) which suggests that the phone will be delivering full screen experience. Yesterday, Realme had released its first theme song in which a mysterious smartphone with pop-up selfie camera and a notch-less display was seen. This phone will be hitting the Chinese market as Realme X.

The Realme X images on TENAA have revealed that it features a vertical dual camera setup and an LED flash on the rear. There is no fingerprint on the back panel of the phone.  Hence, it appears that the Realme X could be the company’s first phone to arrive with in-screen fingerprint reader.

Lei Jun reveals the Mi 9 RUOK (Are You Ok) case

There are already a bunch of official cases for the Xiaomi Mi 9 owners can choose from. Yesterday, Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun revealed a new one called the RUOK (read as Are You Ok) case.

Mi 9 RUOK case

The RUOK case has a two-color design available in five different color variants similar to the Lei Jun custom cases released earlier this month. The case which is made from a lightweight PC material is inspired by the CEO’s famous words at a product launch in India back in 2015.

The CEO, whose English speaking skills were less than average as at then, had told the audience they would get the Mi Band for free. In a bid to gauge their enthusiasm, he repeatedly asked: “Are you OK?”. That part of the launch became a meme on Chinese social media overnight. Now Xiaomi has made a phone case for the Mi 9 based on the occurrence.
