OnePlus 7 Pro real machine photographed in the hands of OnePlus’ CEO

OnePlus‘ CEO Pete Lau was recently photographed while taking breakfast in a restaurant and by his side was a device suspected to be the OnePlus 7 Pro. The picture shows the device still encased in a protective shell meant to shield the device from the prying eyes of reporters than from getting damaged.OnePlus 7 Pro

As a result of the protective casing, we are unable to get the full view of the device. However, the size of the camera cutout seems to confirm that the device will have more than two sensors at the rear. Earlier leaks point to a triple camera setup at the rear for the OP7 Pro. The device is also said to pack a pop-up selfie shooter and OnLeaks has even provided us with renders of the device based on leaked details.OnePlus 7 Pro

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun loses a 5 year bet with Gree Chairwoman for 1 Billion Yuan ($150M)

Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun seems to have lost a bet with Gree Electric Appliances Inc. Chairwoman, Dong Mingzhu. This comes after Gree reported 2018’s total revenue at 198 billion yuan yesterday. The bet, made by Lei Jun on national television, back in December 2013, said that Xiaomi’s revenues would surpass Gree in the next five years. However, Xiaomi’s revenue for the same period was just 174.915 billion yuan, a good 20 billion yuan less than Gree’s figure.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun

While we still don’t know whether Lei Jun would keep his side of the bet, if he decides to do so, it would cost him 1 billion yuan, and that’s nearly $150 million. At the time of making this bet, it was like David challenging Goliath, with Gree beating Xiaomi in every single department, right from revenue, factories, to even employees. But Lei Jun was betting on the company’s solid online sales model, which has helped the company become one of the top smartphone companies in the world.

It’s worth mentioning that Lei Jun’s initial bet was for just 1 yuan. However, Gree’s Chairwoman, Dong Mingzhu, raised that bet to 1 billion yuan.

Xiaomi or Lei Jun is yet to comment on this matter.

They come with totally different aesthetics, but all of them have stunning performances: which is the best one and which one is currently worth buying? Let’s see it together.

Design

The design is a very subjective matter when it comes to gaming phones. There are people who prefer aggressive and original aesthetics such as Nubia Red Magic 3 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 with their LED strips, while others want a more standard and elegant design such as Razer Phone 2. If we exclude the subjective elements, there are three things making the difference here: build quality, keys, and options to connect accessories. On the Nubia Red Magic 3, you get more physical keys you can use in-game, as well as rear pins to connect additional accessories. On the other hand, Xiaomi Black Shark 2 has a pressure sensitive display which lets you map the buttons to the sides of the screen. Razer Phone 2 does not offer these features, but it is water resistant and it has an oleophobic coating for the display. Nubia Red Magic 3 seems a bit more comfortable for gamers.

Display

The most stunning display for gamers is the one found on the Razer Phone 2, despite it is not an AMOLED panel. Indeed, it comes with the highest refresh rate (120 Hz) that is very useful in-game, as well as the highest resolution (QHD) for a higher level of detail, wide color gamut and higher brightness.

Specs & Software

Razer Phone 2 loses this comparison because it has a less impressive chipset: we are talking about the old-gen Snapdragon 845, while Nubia Red Magic 3 and Xiaomi Black Shark 2 are equipped with the new Snapdragon 855 chipset. In order to establish which one performs better between Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and Nubia Red Magic 3, we will have to see how the air cooling of the Nubia Magic 3 behaves, but we have higher expectations for the Red Magic.

Camera

Despite coming with flagship-class performances, these devices are not exactly the best camera phones, but they are still good at taking photos. Nubia Red Magic 3 has just a single camera, but it is very interesting due to its 48 MP resolution and the capability to record 8K videos and 1920 fps slow motion videos. On the other hand, Razer Phone 2 comes with OIS and 2x optical zoom, better features for photos. Even Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is pretty nice with its 48 MP main sensor supported by a 12 MP telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom.

Battery

With its huge 5000 mAh battery, the Nubia Red Magic 3 should be able to beat the competition in a lot of scenarios. We say should because we do not know how much energy the rotating fan working at 14K rpm will consume. So, just like the cameras, we have to test the battery life of the Nubia Red Magic 3 in order to give a definitive opinion.

Price

The price is the weakest point of the Razer Phone 2 as it was launched with a price tag of €850/$950. Xiaomi Black Shark 2 and Nubia Red Magic 3 debuted in China for just €450/$500 and €385/$430 respectively. At the end of the day, if we base on the specs on the paper, due to its big battery, its physical keys, the rear pins, and the 90 Hz refresh rate, Nubia Red Magic 3 looks like the device with the highest value for money.

Xiaomi takes down a tweet with a bizarre low-budget ad for Mi 9 SE

Marking smartphones is as important as making good smartphones. However, marking isn’t as easy job, especially you are in a market like smartphones which is heavily crowded. To stand out from the crowd, the companies try to make witty remarks and ads.

Xiaomi tried to do the same for the marketing of its Mi 9 SE smartphone by posting a video on Twitter. However, instead of getting people interested in the smartphone, the move backfired because of the content. Realizing this, the company soon took down the ad.

Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Ad Tweet

The video shows a couple in bed and the man is using his smartphone. He is shown responding to late-night, flirty messages from another woman on Facebook Messenger. He subsequently gets caught. In a text accompanying the video, the company implies that he’d have gotten away with this if he’d been using a Mi 9 SE.

This was posted by the company’s Xiaomi Malaysia Twitter account and as said, the advertisement has now been deleted by the company. This isn’t the first time that the company’s attempt has backfired.

Last year, after launching the Mi A1 Android One smartphone, Xiaomi ran a poll on Twitter asking its followers whether they preferred MIUI or Android One. But due to a result deemed unsatisfactory by Xiaomi, the tweet was removed by the company.

Xiaomi mi 9 se global version

As for the Mi 9 SE, the smartphone comes with a 5.97-inch AMOLED display having 1080 x 2280 pixels resolution and Gorilla Glass 5. The device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 SoC coupled with 6GB RAM and 64/128GB internal storage.

On the back, the smartphone feature a triple camera module – a 48MP primary sensor, a 13MP ultra-wide sensor, and an 8MP telephoto sensor. A single 20 MP camera is present on the front side for selfies and video calling.

Apple hired Intel’s 5G mobile technology head before resolving conflict with Qualcomm

Recently, there have been talks that the Cupertino giant was looking for partners to bring 5G compatibility to the upcoming iPhone models. Further, Apple had initiated talks to purchase Intel’s modem chip business, cited a report. After being in the negotiations with 5G modem manufacturers like Intel and Qualcomm, Apple finally joined hands with San Diego based – Qualcomm last week.

intel-5g-modem

Both the companies – Apple and Qualcomm were in a tussle from the past couple of years. But surprisingly, they ended the court battle abruptly a week ago. Before the negotiations, Apple was aiming to develop its own chipsets for next year’s iPhone. To speed up the process, Apple even hired Intel’s lead developer for 5G phone modems, Umashankar Thyagarajan, in February. Though “poaching” isn’t a new concept for Apple, it does shed light on Apple’s desire to develop its own chipset in the coming years.

Apple aims to power 2021 iPhone models with its own developed chipsets, despite the six-year licensing deal, and a supply chain agreement with Qualcomm. On the other hand, Intel has entirely scrapped its plans to work on the 5G mobile modems business after Apple abandoned the 5G chip project.

According to internal emails, Thyagarajan’s departure from Intel’s 5G modem business was seen as a significant setback for Intel’s 5G ambitions. It forced the company to reshuffle the whole team but finally ended up on its 5G plans. Intel’s executives Messay Amerga and Abhay Joshi reveal in an internal email that Mr Thyagarajan had “played a key role” in the Intel chip that featured in last year’s iPhones and he had been the project engineer on developing its 5G chip, known as XMM 8160.

Intel was planning to sell off its 5G modem chip business to Apple or some other company, but all ended after Apple-Qualcomm settlement. Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights reveals Intel’s chip business is costing around $1 billion annually, and the value is depreciating with every second without a sale.

Companies like Broadcom, ON Semiconductor Inc., Samsung, or Chinese company Unisoc Communications Inc are some potentials buyers for Intel’s business.

New Realme phone with pop-up selfie camera teased in theme song

Last week, Realme RMX1851 and RMX1901 had bagged approval from China’s telecom authority. Redmi flagship phone with pop-up selfie camera first teaser released

Yesterday, Redmi had conveyed through Weibo that it will be making a new announcement today. Keeping true to its promise, the Chinese brand released the first teaser of an upcoming Redmi phone earlier today on the microblogging website. The teaser reveals that the forthcoming Redmi flagship phone will come equipped with a pop-up selfie shooter.

The new video teaser showcases the new “Avengers: Endgame” movie along with some images of the recently released Redmi phones in between. At the end of the video, a mysterious Redmi phone shows up with notch-less display design along with a pop-up selfie camera. Redmi is using “flagship” term to tease the phone, but its exact name is still under the wraps.

Could the mysterious Redmi smartphone with pop-up selfie camera be the Snapdragon 855 powered phone? Rumors have claimed that the Snapdragon 855 Redmi smartphone will be arriving with up to 8 GB of RAM, up to 128 GB of inbuilt storage, 32-megapixel selfie camera, 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixeel triple camera, NFC, 3.5mm audio jack and a display of 6.39 inches. While many rumors have stated that it will be arriving with a notch-less display, other sources have also claimed that it could be featuring a punch-hole display. Redmi General Manger Lu Weibing had claimed in the recent past that the Redmi SD855 will deliver stronger performance, better cameras, high screen-to-body ratio and affordable price tag.

Rumors have it that there is an upcoming Redmi phone powered by Snapdragon 730 SoC. It is rumored to include a notch-less screen and a pop-up front camera. It is speculated to arrive with 4,000mAh battery and 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixel triple camera system. This phone seems to have been officially teased by Xiaomi India Managing Director, Manu Kumar Jain in the past week. Jain has hinted that the company will be soon launching a Snapdragon 730 powered smartphone in India. However, he did not share any other information on the phone.

Redmi may want to launch a less powerful phone before it unveils the Redmi Snapdragon 855 smartphone. Hence, it is advisable to wait for further teasers from the company to confirm whether it is the SD730 or SD855 powered Redmi phone.

Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition teardown showcases camera implementation

A few weeks ago, Oppo took the wraps off its new flagship lineup — Oppo Reno. So far, the company has launched two models of the series in China — Oppo Reno and Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition.

The phone, which is currently available for pre-order in China and before the device goes up for sale, here’s the teardown of the Reno 10X Zoom Edition, explaining the internals of the flagship smartphone.

Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition

Removing the plastic back cover of the phone reveals that it is connected to the NFC chip. The company has made some changes on both sides of the cover, including the addition of grooves for heat dissipation gel and to make the wire turn to the flash.

Moving ahead, we can see the two major highlights of the smartphone — the new and unique pop-up camera mechanism and the 10X hybrid zoom triple-camera setup for the back panel. Because of these two features, the PCB board or the motherboard layout is quite compact compared to others.

Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition

It seems that the device offers a good level of heat dissipation on the motherboard. It has metal shields on both the front as well as the back and a uniform copper foil. Also, silicone grease and gel have been added to the front and the back side of the CPU core area.

There’s also soft protective ring protection around the BTB and the lens for the protection and is not much difficult to take it apart. However, the precision and the quality used for this definitely looks like a flagship-grade device.

The smartphone has a unique pop-up mechanism and so does its implementation and layout under the hood. It combines a front camera, soft light, an earpiece, a microphone, and a rear flash on the asymmetrical rotating structure and the stepper motor is placed on the right side. The volume of the transmission part is also small and has a seven-toothed gear that reduces movement sound.

The whole pop-up mechanism is made up of a circular motion which centers on one point on the right side of the fuselage. The guide rail is made of a metal frame which offers much higher stability.

Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition

Coming to the major highlight — the 10X Hybrid Zoom camera setup — it comes with a 48 MP primary sensor, an 8 MP wide-angle lens, and a 13 MP telephoto lens. These three lenses are held together in an L-shaped arrangement and are fixed by a gel.

It seems that the periscope lens, which measures 11.5 x 5.7 x 24.5 mm, is separately packaged in another metal cover. When opened, along with the CMOS for the general lens, it can be seen that the lens and the refractive prism are much larger than the conventional size. The company has also customized the lens module to cut the circular lens further in parallel, reducing the volume occupation, which is the origin of the D-Cut module. To achieve the anti-shake effect, the company uses electromagnetic control.

Overall, the internal structure of the Oppo Reno 10X Hybrid Zoom Edition is quite compact. As with the unique pop-up mechanism, the internals for the same is also executive a bit differently. It also takes care of the heat dissipation and offers protections for regular usage. So, the phone does have the flagship grade build quality.

Purported OnePlus 7 appears in music video with notch-less display

OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro are scheduled to go official on May 14. Recent reports have revealed that the OnePlus 7 will be sporting a notched display design along with dual rear cameras like the OnePlus 6T smartphone. On the other side, the OnePlus 7 Pro has a triple camera setup on its rear and a notch-less display with pop-up selfie camera. The OnePlus 7 has seemingly made its appearance in a new music video by Indian singer Neha Bhasin made available through the OnePlus Playback which serves as a platform to promote independent music. At the same time, an unknown user was able to snap two images of OnePlus CEO Pete Lau with OnePlus 7 Pro placed on his table at a restaurant.

What’s interesting about the mysterious OnePlus phone with dual rear cameras that has appeared in the handset is that does not feature waterdrop-styled notch. This mysterious handset could be the cheaper OnePlus 7 phone and its front shots from the music video suggests that it will be also sporting a notch-less display like the OnePlus 7 Pro smartphone. Also, like the Pro sibling, the OnePlus 7 handset may arrive with pop-up selfie shooter.

The alleged OnePlus 7 phone in the video features a flat display panel. Also, the vertical dual camera setup appears somewhat different from what was revealed through the renders made by popular tipster @OnLeaks. The LED flash has a pill-shaped appearance whereas the renders by the tipster carried circular LED flash. In fact, the rear appearance of the purported OnePlus 7 resembles with OnePlus 6T handset. The absence of rear-facing fingerprint scanner confirms that the phone features an in-display fingerprint reader.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has also shown up along with the CEO Pete Lau in fresh images. The new images show that the handset has an elongated camera setup that could be housing triple rear cameras. The frontside of the phone is not visible since it is kept upside down on the table.

Recent reports have claimed that the OnePlus 7 will have a 6.4-inch display full HD+ display, Snapdragon 855 SoC, 48-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera, 3,700mAh battery with 20W fast charging technology and it will be releasing in variants like 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage. On the other side, the OnePlus 7 Pro is expected to come with a 6.7-inch curved AMOLED display with quad HD+ resolution, Snapdragon 855, 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 16-megapixel triple rear cameras, a 4,000mAh battery with 30W rapid charging. It may release in variants like 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB / 12 GB RAM + 256 GB UFS 3.0 storage. The OnePlus 7 series which also includes OnePlus 7 Pro 5G edition will be made official on May 14.
