Design

Several people define it ugly, but I am magnetically attracted from the way Samsung Galaxy A80 flips its camera in order to let the users shoot both normal photos and selfies with the same triple setup. It definitely needs the innovation award. But Oppo Reno has a cleaner and more attractive rear side, that is why I prefer it slightly more. It is equipped with a “shark fin-like” pop-up camera and it also seems to come with the highest screen-to-body ratio. Last but not least, it has more compact dimensions, so it is easier to hold, to use with one hand and to keep in a pocket.

Display

Even though Samsung is the king of displays, you will not see noticeable differences between the panels of these handsets. They all come with the Super AMOLED technology, a Full HD+ resolution, and satisfying color reproduction. So it is kinda useless to make a comparison between their displays. Note that, with 6.7 inches, Samsung Galaxy A80 and Vivo X27 Pro come with a wider diagonal that is more satisfying for multimedia and productivity. But at the same time, they are less compact than Oppo Reno, as mentioned above.

Specs & Software

Do you want to always get the fastest and smoothest performances from your handset? Then go for the Samsung Galaxy A80 as it comes with a newer, more efficient and more powerful Snapdragon 730 chipset! It was officially announced just two days ago and it is very nice for gaming and advanced users. On the other hand, Oppo Reno and Vivo X27 Pro offer more internal storage in their most expensive variants: up to 256 GB (the Galaxy A80 stops at 128 GB). This is important because none of these phones features expandable storage. Do you prefer having slightly better performance or more internal storage?

Camera

The most complete camera department belongs to the Vivo X27 Pro. It is equipped with a triple camera setup on the back including an ultrawide sensor, while on the front there is an awesome 32 MP shooter. You get a similar configuration with the Samsung Galaxy A80 on the back, but it has a less bright focal aperture and it lacks the front camera as it can use its rotating camera as a front camera too. Oppo Reno has a front camera, but it has just a dual camera on its back and it lacks an ultrawide lens.

Battery

Given that the Vivo X27 Pro has the biggest battery (4000 mAh) and it has a way bigger capacity than Samsung Galaxy A80 and Oppo Reno, it will probably last more on a single charge in almost every scenario. There is not so many difference between the specs sheets of these phones, so the only doubt actually regards the software optimization, as we still did not test the Galaxy A80 and Oppo Reno battery life (as they just became official).

Price

Samsung Galaxy A80 will hit the market with a €650/$731 price tag in Europe, Oppo Reno starts from €400/$450 in China and Vivo X27 Pro costs €530/$596. Overall, these phones are more or less at the same level, but I would personally go for the Vivo X27 Pro because of its great camera department and its bigger battery.

Xiaomi crowdfunds the Lighten AI English reading companion/translator

Xiaomi has launched another innovative product under the Youpin crowdfunding platform. The product is dubbed Lighten AI English reading companion. As the name implies the gadget offers translation services for Chinese speakers. The gadget actually needs a supporting smartphone as it comes with an app that has the Cambridge dictionary and another simplified dictionary onboard.

The gadget comes with a 13MP Sony IMX214 camera which captures the texts in a book placed in front of it. The camera has a wide angle and can capture texts with a 1750cm2 radius. The type of book varies from children’s picture books, exam papers, magazine to any other materials with English texts. The device a doesn’t actually translate the entire texts on the book but any word you point with the finger will be translated and the meaning relayed on the smartphone app. The app even provides the word pronunciation. The efficiency of the app isn’t affected by the font type, line spacing, and typesetting format.

The device is ultra-lightweight, at just 190g and has a dimension of 34x34x1.62mm when not in use. The head is extendable in order to prop up the camera when it is to be used. Despite the size, it crams a big 2600mAh battery under the hood. The device also comes with vacuum stabilizer which helps keep it stable despite the narrow frame. It is powered by an Intel AI chip.

The device is presently up for crowdfunding on Xiaomi Youpin for 399 yuan ($59). It is expected to start shipping on May 23.

Huawei MateBook X Pro (2019) and MateBook 14 get China launch

At today’s event in China, Huawei also announced the MateBook X Pro and the MateBook 14. The two notebooks were first unveiled back at MWC 2019 in Barcelona.

MateBook X Pro (2019)

The MateBook X Pro is built from a single piece of aluminum with CNC drilling and cutting and a ceramic sandblasting finish for each half of the chassis.

It has a 13.9-inch 3K display with a 91% screen-to-body ratio and a 3:2 aspect ratio. The display supports up to 10-finger multi-touch with touch-screen gestures such as three-finger swipe to take a screenshot.

The MateBook X Pro (2019) hasn’t changed physically from last year’s model but there are changes under the hood. It is now powered by an 8th-gen Core i7-8565U processor which has an integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics card and the new NVIDIA MX250 GPU. The Thunderbolt 3 port also allows you to add an external GPU.

There is a new Shark Fin 2.0 cooling fan which is 20% more efficient than the previous generation. The MateBook X Pro (2019) also retains the fingerprint scanner which is built into the power button and the pop-up webcam nestled between the keys.

Another new feature is the Huawei Share 3.0 One Touch feature that allows you to easily transfer files between your phone and PC. There is Bluetooth 5.0 too and an upgraded dual antenna for faster and more stable wireless connections.

The MateBook X Pro (2019) has a 57.4Wh battery that is said to provide 13 hours of video playback (1080p) and up to 12 hours of web browsing. It will ship with a 65W charger. There are quad speakers with Dolby Atmos for surround sound audio.

The notebook will be available for purchase on Huawei’s online store, Tmall, and Suning. There will be four variants and three colors (Deep Gray, Moon Silver, and Pink Gold), below are their prices:

MateBook 14

The MateBook 14 comes with a 14-inch display with a 2160 x 1440 resolution. It also has a 3:2 aspect ratio and a screen-to-body ratio of 90%. The power button doubles as the fingerprint scanner and the webcam is also hidden between the keys.

The notebook is powered by Intel’s 8th-gen Core i7-8565U processor and it also gets the new NVIDIA MX250 dedicated graphics card with a TDP of 25W. It comes in a Core i5 variant too and all variants have 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The new Shark Fin 2.0 fan handles cooling and there is a built-in sensor that monitors the temperature in real time. The MateBook 14 doesn’t have the MateBook X Pro’s Thunderbolt port but you get a USB-C port for charging/data transfer/display port, an HDMI port, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.0 port, and an audio jack. There is also Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi.

The notebook also supports Huawei Share for easy data transfer between the PC and supported phones. There are two speakers with Dolby Atmos audio and four microphones. The notebook has a 57.4Wh battery and ships with a 65W USB-C charger.

The MateBook 14 comes in Dark Gray and Moon Silver. It is 15.9 millimeters at its thickest and weighs 1.49 kilograms.

Galaxy A80 powered by Snapdragon 730, scores over 200K points on AnTuTu

The Galaxy A80 launched as the first Samsung phone with a sliding-rotating camera and also the first with practically no bezels. Samsung didn’t specify the chipset inside the phone but AnTuTu has now revealed the A80 is also the world’s first Snapdragon 730 phone in the world.

The Snapdragon 730 was launched a day before Samsung unveiled its new phones and it, alongside its sibling, the Snapdragon 730G are the new kings of the mid-range category. The AnTuTu benchmark not only confirms the SoC but also reveals the overall score in addition to some specs.

The Samsung Galaxy A80 has an AnTuTu score of 207,082 points which is impressive and isn’t too far from the 213,113 points of the test device from yesterday’s AnTuTu comparison result.

The Snapdragon 730 (SM7150-AA) is an 8nm processor. The smaller node size compared to the Snapdragon 710 means power efficiency will be improved. Performance is also 35% better with the new SoC. The SoC is paired with an Adreno 618 GPU and a Hexagon 688 DSP.

It also has a Computer Vision-ISP which provides depth sensing capabilities at 60fps. The Galaxy A80’s 3D Depth Camera most likely combines this feature of the chipset to allow you to record videos with bokeh effect.

The AnTuTu result also shows a few specs such as the version of Android which is Android 9 Pie, the RAM, and storage (8GB, 128GB), and the screen resolution which is 2400 x 1080.

OPPO Reno and OPPO Reno 10X Zoom Edition in pictures: Spot the difference

Huawei’s P30 Pro flagship may be dominating the headlines right now with its 50X digital zoom but we won’t lose sight of OPPO’s latest smartphone which comes with a decent 10X zoom camera on one of the models. OPPO Reno was announced yesterday in China and it comes in a standard edition powered by a Snapdragon 710 chipset and a 10x zoom edition which packs a Snapdragon 855 chipset. Both models look very similar but there are some few differences in their designs. These pictures of the Reno standard edition and Reno 10x zoom edition will help you pick out the differences.

Both models have the same design at the front but different screen sizes. The 10x zoom edition packs a 6.65-inch AMOLED display while the standard model has a smaller 6.4-inch display. Both displays are near bezel-less, devoid of any form of screen notch. The Reno models use a similar 16MP shark fin-shaped pop-up camera design for the selfies. The locations of the power button on the right and the volume rockers on the left side of the display are consistent on both models. Further, both the standard and 10X zoom edition of the Reno come with USB-C ports and the SIM card slot is located on the left side of the USB-C port while there is a speaker grill on the right.

The back panel design is where you will find most of the significant differences between the design of both models. The major highlight of the 10x zoom model is the 10X hybrid zoom technology which it features. It packs three rear cameras; a 48MP high-definition main camera + 13 MP periscope telephoto lens + 8 MP super wide-angle lens. At the same time, the device uses dual optical image stabilization (OIS), triple focus, and can take a true and clear 10x zoom photo without a tripod. On its part, the standard Reno comes with a dual camera setup as it lacks the 10x zoom feature. OPPO Reno standard edition features OIS-assisted 48MP + 5MP dual camera module on its rear. Huawei seems to have a slightly different take on TVs. The company is said to be working on a smart TV which primarily acts as an entertainment center and smart speaker. So, despite the fact that it might look like a traditional TV with a big screen, that’s likely its secondary feature.

After revealing the company’s plans to become world’s number one smartphone manufacturer by 2020, Huawei’s Richard Yu added a few comments about the company’s TV plans. He reveals that Huawei’s TV won’t be a traditional one. In this era of AI, Huawei’s vision of a TV is rather unique, in the sense that it will primarily be a smart speaker with a display. So, it would be more like a media hub with a large screen.

Hold your horses before you get too excited. Richard adds that Huawei doesn’t have any plans to release a TV in the short term. We might see one later this year, but even that’s not confirmed.

Well, Mr. Richard says that while Huawei has the ability to release such a device in the market by H1 2019, it wants to add a few disruptive features to the device before release.

Honor MagicBook 2019 listed on official site, powered by AMD Ryzen 5 3500U

A few days ago it was reported that Honor will announce the Honor 20i smartphone and the MagicBook 2019 notebook on April 17. Ahead of the release next week, the MagicBook 2019 has been listed on the official Huawei/Honor online store, Vmall. The listing reveals some of its key specs.

The original MagicBook launched on April 19 last year. It packed a 14-inch display, an 8th-gen processor and NVIDIA GPU. It later got an AMD Ryzen version in May and a touch-screen version in July which is also available in Intel and AMD versions.

For the MagicBook 2019, Honor is going with AMD’s Ryzen 5 3500U processor. The notebook will come in two variants – 8GB RAM + 256GB and 8GB RAM + 512GB. Buyers will also be able to choose between Glacier Silver and Starry Sky. Unfortunately, it seems only the 512GB version will have two color variants. The 256GB version will only be available in Glacier Silver. That might change though as even though there are only two color variants listed, the header image for the product shows there will be three, the third being Nebula Purple.

With respect to design, there doesn’t seem to have been a lot of changes. The bezels seem to be the same thickness and the ports are also in the same position as last year’s model. The speakers are still flanking the keyboard, though it seems it now has four, and the power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Huawei’s Richard Yu is confident that the company will be the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer by the end of 2020. He revealed this while speaking to Chinese media after the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro launch event earlier today.

Huawei’s journey in the smartphone market has been incredible. The Chinese manufacturer has had some big goals in the past few years and time and again, it has managed to reach them. So, when Richard Yu says that he is confident that Huawei will beat Samsung next year, to become the global number one smartphone manufacturer, it’s very likely that they will reach their target.

Over a million Redmi Note 7 series units sold in India in one month

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 series – Redmi Note 7 and Redmi Note 7 Pro registered over a million sales in India since its launch last month. It’s first good news for Redmi in India after becoming an independent brand with Xiaomi. The newest mid-range devices are already shining in the global arena with four million sales reported last week. The smartphone runs on MIUI 10 based Android 9 Pie OS. It’s Redmi’s first device to feature 48 megapixels Sony IMX586 sensor on the rear side along with a 5-megapixel depth sensor. On the front, a 13-megapixel camera is present for video calling and selfies. Huawei announces MateBook E 2019, powered by Snapdragon 850

Huawei announced a new 2-in-1 notebook today. The new MateBook E 2019 is a fanless always-connected PC powered by the Snapdragon 850 and runs Windows 10 Home.

The MateBook E 2019 pairs the Snapdragon 850 chipset with 8GB of RAM and 256GB/512GB of UFS storage. It has support for 4G LTE (nano-SIM) which covers network bands in most regions so you can always stay connected just like you do on your phone.

There is 4×4 MIMO antenna technology to keep your connection strong whether you are indoors or outdoors. There is also Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi. Huawei says the notebook has a special feature that prevents Bluetooth and Wi-Fi from interfering with each other.

The notebook has a 12-inch touch display with a 2160 x 1440 resolution, a 3:2 aspect ratio and a 160° viewing angle. The screen has an oleophobic coating to keep it free from smudges. Huawei says it has a TUV Rheinland certification which means it is recommended safe from harmful blue-light.

There is a 13MP camera on the rear of the device and a 5MP camera for video calls. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for security. The MateBook E 2019 works with the M Pen Lite stylus but you have to purchase that separately. If you already own the MediaPad M5 Lite with the M Pen Lite stylus, you should be able to use it with the MateBook E 2019. With the stylus, handwritten text can be converted into typed text and you can also use it to draw or paint.

The MateBook E’s keyboard has a 1.3mm key travel and a kickstand that can be adjusted between 110° and 160°. The notebook can also be used in tent mode in case all you want to do is lay back and watch a movie.

The notebook has dual speakers with dual SmartPA amplifier and Dolby Atmos for a virtual and immersive surround sound experience. When it comes to ports, you get a USB type-C port which supports charging, data transfer and also doubles as a DisplayPort. There is a 3.5mm audio jack too. Huawei has also added Huawei Share 3.0 One Touch which allows you to transfer files from your phone to the computer and vice versa just by touching the phone against the computer’s keyboard.

The MateBook E 2019 has a 36.3Wh battery that can provide up to 10 hours of media playback at 50% brightness. Huawei says it supports fast-charging, allowing you to charge from empty to 88% in 1.5 hours. The device is just 8.5mm thick (without the keyboard), 278.2mm wide and 194.22mm tall. It weighs 698g and 1.173kg when you attach the keyboard.

The MateBook E 2019 comes in Titanium Ash and Charm Blue Sea. It is priced at ¥3999 (~$595) for the 256GB version and ¥4999 (~$744) for the 256GB version. It will be available for purchase later today on Vmall, Tmall, and Suning with free gifts bundled with the purchase.

Huawei launches Ark Compiler – aims to improve Android system efficiency

At the product launch event in China, Huawei announced a new Ark Compiler aiming to improve Android system efficiency. Huawei’s consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong says the compiler will make Android App compilation more fluent. It will facilitate the interpretation and execution of the whole Android compilation process.

The Ark Compiler brings support for architecture level optimizations resulting in significant performance improvements. It will make the Android system more responsive and robust against different actions. Yu reveals that the new compiler can improve system fluency by 24%, system response by 44% and enhance operations of third-party apps by 60%. It will further strengthen multitasking by optimizing several processes and resulting in better speed and performance. Improved battery performance, faster execution speeds and compatibility across all new Android devices term Ark as the best alternative for ART (Android Runtime).

Huawei won’t hold any usage rights for Ark Compiler, which means it will be open source for the industry. Huawei expects app developers to soon start using the new refined compiler for Android.

Currently, Android is using the inbuilt ART virtual machine to compile the application code into machine code. The virtual machine dynamically loads and execute the machine code on the Android system. It is 2x faster than the Dalvik VM which was found in the earlier Android builds.

The Ark compiler will further improve the efficiency of the Android system. It will solve problems currently faced by ART. Technical details for the Ark compiler are missing right now.

Through an unveil event in Shanghai today, Huawei has announced Huawei P30 series of smartphones in China. The P30 and P30 Pro flagship phones offer topnotch photography experience. The P30 Pro has a periscope lens in its triple camera module that makes it possible to snap images with 10x hybrid zoom. Also, these smartphones are packed with impressive flagship specifications.

The Huawei P30 Pro also comes in three models like 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage, 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. Huawei P30 and P30 Pro Specifications

The Huawei P30 has a 6.1-inch OLED display whereas P30 Pro has a 6.5-inch curved OLED screen. Both phones support full HD+ resolution and are equipped with in-display fingerprint reader. The 7nm Kirin 980 chipset powers the smartphone. The P30 phone features a 3,650mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging whereas the P30 has a larger 4,200mAh battery with 40W rapid charging. Design

In these two years, there are two features of smartphone’s development, which are bigger screen size and better photograph. From 3.5-inch screen to 6-inch screen, most of people prefer a large display gradually. And for the screen designs, there are several designs having been widely adopted, which are notch, water drop and punch hole. Ultimately, manufacturers make the true full-screen possible by hiding the front-facing camera. OPPO Find X has shown us the possibility, and the OPPO Reno is the upgrade version of true full-screen.

OPPO Reno features a uniquely design called “shark fin” shaped pop-up module.

The new system has also expanded a lot – remote guardianship, which is very particular for dealing with phone problems, Hyperboost 2.0, which optimizes game performance, and Breeno smart assistant, which covers the whole scene, all of which have help to improve user experience.

OPPO’s 10x Zoom technology has showed on the MWC, and now it is used in the OPPPO Reno. Note that the standard edition has no 10x zoom, but has dual rear camera module.

OPPO Reno comes with 48MP main camera with Sony IMX586 sensor making sure the imaging effect. Moreover, Reno also uses four-in-one pixel aggregation technology, so the performance is quite good in low-light environment.

Both edition support Super Nightscape, which is a technology to enhance the performance of night scene through multi-frame synthesis technology. In the handheld mode, after taking a night photo, it will compose 7 images with different brightness to form a photo. If you take photos by tripod, it will compose maximum of 17 images with different brightness to form a photo, so the image quality will also be greatly improved.

Overall, regardless of the low light and night scenes, the camera of OPPO Reno will have a great performance. You can see from the official sample.

We also take several samples by Reno. The camera’s performance is very good in daytime, even in the easily overexposed scenes, the color is gorgeous, the details are greatly preserved. There is no distortion in color in a dimly lit room.

In general, you can take photos by OPPO Reno without complex setup.

There is no doubt that, photograph is one of the features of Reno.

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G receives complaints after launch in South Korea last week

After waiting for over two months, Samsung finally launched Galaxy S10 5G last week in South Korea. Inadvertently, the world’s first commercial 5G device is facing some serious performance issues such as failing to switch between 5G and LTE, lower than expected speeds and limited 5G coverage. Multiple users are complaining about these problems, reports Business Korea.

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G is off to a rough start, and concerned companies are “shirking their responsibilities” to early 5G adopters. Samsung and other three telecom operators – SK Telecom, LG Uplus, and KT are running from their responsibilities, showing their inability to find where the problem lies.

Samsung claims to have fully optimized the device with 5G networks after rolling out a new firmware on April 6. The update improved base station signal acquisition and added some changes. On the other hand, telecom operators – SK Telecom and LG Uplus noticed complaints dropped after updating their base stations. Whereas, Korean Telecom entirely denied any complaints regarding incompatibility from its 30000 5G subscribers.

Speaking about the Galaxy S10 5G issues, an industry expert says the 5G network is not fully optimized. For a smooth transition between 5G and LTE networks, base stations need to be tweaked accordingly.

It is nearly impossible to get to the root of the issue until LG V50 ThinQ launches later this month. It will bring clarity and help to identify whether the device or network provider is a culprit here.

Samsung launched Galaxy S10 5G in Korea with Exynos 9820 octa-core processor featuring a 7-nanometer process and speeds ranging between 1.7 GHz and 2.8 GHz. It includes a 6.7-inch Infinity-O display with a pixel density of 505 ppi. It supports 1200 nits of brightness, high color accuracy, and HDR 10+ support. In the camera department, the S10 5G shares a triple rear camera module – 16MP ultrawide, 12MP telephoto, and a 12 MP wide-angle camera. A 10 MP selfies camera is present on the front side.

Redmi Note 7 Pro’s strongest rival Realme 3 Pro is expected to get announced in India in this month. An official invite of the smartphone that was reportedly tweeted and deleted by Realme CEO Madhav Sheth has surfaced now. It reveals that the company will be holding a launch event for the Realme 3 Pro smartphone in India on April 22. The launch event will kick off at 12:30 PM on the said date. The social media channels of Realme are yet to confirm the Realme 3 Pro launch event.

Realme will be celebrating the 1^st anniversary of the company with the launch of the Realme 3 Pro smartphone. The “Speed Awakens” text on the launch poster suggests that the phone will be deliver topnotch performance. Also, Sheth had recently released a tweet that showed the Fornite game running on the Realme 3 Pro. It is speculated that the Snapdragon 710 chipset that offers impressive graphics performance for gaming will be powering the device. Its Adreno 616 GPU is comparatively better than Adreno 612 graphics available with Snapdragon 675 that is present under the hood of Redmi Note 7 Pro.

The Realme 3 Pro could be the company’s first phone to arrive with support for rapid charging. It is speculated to be equipped with VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology. The other rumored features of the Realme 3 Pro are 6.3-inch IPS LCD display with waterdrop notch, 25-megapixel front camera, 16-megapixel + 2-megapixel and 4,000mAh battery. Nubia Alpha foldable smartwatch that can be also called wearable smartphone was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 tech trade show in February. The Chinese manufacturer had also displayed Bluetooth wireless earbuds called Nubia Pods alongside Nubia Alpha at MWC 2019. Both the devices have recently launched in China. Through a press release, the company has claimed that it will be announcing these two devices along with Red Magic 3 gaming phone in India in May.

Nubia Alpha Wearable Smartphone

The Nubia Alpha wearable smartphone comes with a flexible OLED screen of 4 inches. It can be wrapped on the wrist and even unwrapped to use it like a smartphone with a tall aspect ratio display.
