MIUI will add Persistent Lockscreen after Face Unlock feature

Xiaomi is already looking for new recommendations to improve the User Interface and other features of their devices. The company always keep a tap on the suggestions from its users via Mi Community. Similarly, Xiaomi is going to add Persistent Lockscreen feature to the MIUI on the recommendation of the Mi community members. In an update via MIUI official Weibo handle, the company said that it will allow users to switch whether they want the slide to unlock feature or directly wants to face unlock the device.

miui persistent lockscreen

MIUI is terming this new feature as Persistent Lockscreen and will soon be available on the devices. The need for such a feature arises when most of the users tend to see the time or other notifications on the lockscreen rather than unlocking the device. As of now, to see the notification while keeping the phone locked, users have to place the device in an unusual position. It is done so it won’t detect their face and unlocks the device. It is a cumbersome practice for many users.

As detailed on Mi community forums, the feature will add additional “Swipe to Unlock” function if the Persistent Unlock feature is turned on. It will also give an option to permanently turn off the function and use the device as usual.

This new aspect of continuously improving the operating system has enhanced the MIUI functionality even in the old devices. According to official data, Xiaomi new devices perform 50% faster at launch, but after some time, the performance increases by 85% due to updations and refinements. Moreover, the new improvements update policy will not only cater the high-end devices, soon it will be directed towards every Xiaomi devices including Redmi phones too, said Lin Bin, President of Xiaomi.

Along with the Persistent Unlock feature, MIUI is continually improving the functional aspects of the ROM. It is continuously optimizing the performance, and other aspects of the ROM by providing new updates.

We hope Persistent unlock would solve all the issues that people are currently facing with face unlock on Xiaomi devices.

Honor’s Foldable Smartphone could be released in 2020

As of today, there are two major foldable products in the market, the Mate X from Huawei and the Galaxy Fold from Samsung. But after hearing the statements from multiple brands at MWC 2019, it’s quite clear that everyone wants a piece of this market. Eventually, almost all the major smartphone brands will have a foldable product under their belt, and Honor will be no exception.

Huawei Mate X featured

Given that Huawei already has a foldable product in its lineup, it wouldn’t have been wrong to think Honor might skip on such a product. But the company’s CEO George Zhao has confirmed that they are considering releasing a foldable in the near future.

However, at present, the product’s exorbitant price tag won’t be in line with Honor’s focus on products aimed at the young generation. So, the company has decided to wait out until the production ramps up and the manufacturing price of foldables go down. So, you’ll most likely have to wait until 2020 to see a foldable smartphone from the brand.

“For Honor I think we will find a way to make this so our target customer can have a foldable phone. I think next year; next year … should be the moment.” said Mr. Zhao in an interview with CNET this week.

In the same interview, he further confirmed that Honor will have a 5G smartphone this year itself. This isn’t surprising given that literally, everyone is on board the 5G hype this year. This includes OnePlus, which showed off its 5G prototype (albeit enclosed in a box) at the tech show a couple of days back.

Zhao further added that he was a fan of Mate X’s design. That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll see a Mate X lookalike from Honor. We have seen the brand release some really impressive phones in the past few months like the Honor V20. So, when Honor does make a foldable, it could be different from Huawei’s take on the design.

Motorola foldable phone coming soon confirms company’s Vice President of Global Product

After the launch of foldable phones from Samsung and Huawei, few other manufacturers have also started to publicize their foldable phone developments. Recently, Motorola has informed about their foldable phone development in an interview. Motorola’s Vice President of Global Product Dan Dery has confirmed it an interview along with some new details.

motorola foldable phone

Already, there were rumors that Motorola is developing a foldable device and the recent interview has confirmed it. Talking about the device, Dan Dery said that Motorola is actively working to debut foldable device and would launch “[no] later than everybody else in the market.” He further quoted that “We started to work on foldable a long time ago.” Dan said, “And we have been doing a lot of iteration.”

The above sayings from Motorola’s VP confirm the recent reports that have been published on The Wall Street Journal. The new device would bend inwards alike RAZR flip phones.

Although Motorola didn’t point any exact day for the launch, rather they have put a timeline at sometime this year. It appears Motorola’s foldable smartphone would appear along with the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X in the second half of the year. Moreover, the Lenovo owned company is speculated to debut the foldable device at its annual conference in August.

Moreover, Dery confirms some vague details about the device which we have already seen in Motorola’s patent filing. The new device will come with RAZR like style carrying display inwards. It would not feature the display outwards as like we have seen on the Samsung Galaxy Fold and Moto Mate X. Its design aesthetics will match to that of old RAZR flip phones.

Dery notes that the Motorola is looking for different designs which can minimize the scratches while handling it. In a similar question, Dan said, “We have been testing a plastic OLED device with plastic film on top.” “The fact that you’re touching [that kind of display] with your nails is scratching it. It has a short life right away, it starts dying the day you unpack it.”

Motorola is testing different designs packing singular display which can decrease scratch related defects. “When you know the scratching issues you would be facing, you will have something that is very rapidly not usable,” said Dery.

Overall, Motorola RAZR phones are making a comeback with foldable displays. Additionally, as per the recent report from The Wall Street Journal, the new Motorola foldable device would be priced around $1500. The price was disagreeable until last month, but now it seems to fit in the bracket after the launch of Galaxy Fold at $2000 and Mate X at ~$2600.

It would be interesting to see such different approaches of foldable devices launching in coming time. Well, how many of you’re eagerly waiting for the foldable devices?

Y’all asking for big battery smartphones, here’s Energizer’s P18K Pop with an 18,000mAh cell!

Energizer used to be known for its durable battery but the US company has been busy these days trying to push out smartphones with various innovations. The company recently teased several models, most of them with a pop-up camera. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019, Energizer stunned visitors with the unveiling of a smartphone packing a monster 18,000mAh battery. You heard that right, the device known as Energizer P18K Pop crams an 18k cell under its hood and the biggest casualty was the size of the phone. The P18K Pop is more of a battery with a smartphone attached rather than the other way round.Energizer P18K Pop

The P18K Pop which is expected to go on sale in June comes with a size that is almost three times that of an iPhone in terms of thickness. It is 18mm thick compared to 7.7mm on the iPhone X. Despite the thickness, the device still has a protrusion on the rear camera. The device comes with a USB Type C port and can charge from zero to full in just 8 hours. That’s an overnight charge but we believe the battery won’t b needing to be charged so often. The device will likely also support OTG function.Energizer P18K Pop

Apart from the big battery, the Energizer model comes with a pop-up selfie shooter which adds an attraction to the horrible size, in m opinion. With such thickness, no one will easily notice the full-screen, bezel-less screen. The Energizer P18K Pop also packs a triple 12MP camera setup and runs Android 9.0 Pie from the go.

Samsung plans to release its 5G phone in April, but it won’t hit the US just yet

The biggest highlight of the Galaxy Unpacked event held last is unarguably the launch of Samsung‘s first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. Another big highlight is the launch of the Galaxy S10 5G, which happens to be the Korean giant’s first foray into the emerging 5G technology. Since 5G infrastructure is practically non-existent at the moment, the phone will be of little use if Samsung puts it up for sale immediately. So, the device won’t be joining the other models to go on sale immediately in the US but a recent report by Engadget tips the Galaxy S10 5G to go on sale in April in South Korea. The tech blog cites sources familiar with the company’s plans.

Unfortunately, there is no detail on when exactly the device will go on sale in the US. Local carrier Verizon will reportedly be the first to stock the device. A page where buyers can register to receive future updates as to when the device will be available has even gone live on the carrier’s website. The device is expected to be available on Verizon sometime in the second quarter of 2019. Verizon is expected to launch mobile 5G in 30 cities during the first half of 2019. AT&T has 5G service running in several US cities while Sprint will debut 5G in a couple of US cities in May. T-Mobile recently announced that its 5G launch in 30 cities will be delayed until the second half of this year. Whenever it lands, it will be sold exclusively on Verizon for a while before the other major US carriers will stock it.

As a reminder, the Galaxy S10 5G comes with a 5G modem which is the main thing differentiating it from the regular Galaxy S10. The Galaxy S10 5G comes with a huge 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. It packs a mammoth 4500mAh which will surely keep the lights on for a long time. This variant is only available in 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. Another distinguishing feature is the four camera lenses it packs. The fourth lens is a TOF camera while the others are the same as the Galaxy S10’s.

Lenovo Z6 Pro will be a 5G phone with a HyperVision camera

Lenovo released a teaser poster last week that hinted at the launch of the Z6 Pro at MWC 2019. However, the Chinese giant didn’t announce the device at its press event today but it did release some details.

Lenovo Z6 Pro Hyper Video

Lenovo spoke about 5G networks and how it will affect the smartphone industry. Lenovo’s VP Edward Chang who helmed the event said “Hyper Videos” will be the trend of the 5G era. Although he didn’t explain what Hyper videos are, he did say they will be transferred at higher speeds than current videos.

Phones that will record this hyper videos will feature new camera technologies and the Lenovo Z6 Pro will be one of them. He also mentioned that one manufacturer will launch a phone with a maximum camera resolution of 100MP.

Design

While I do not like the standard design of the LG G8 ThinQ so much, it is a very hard battle between Samsung Galaxy S10e and Xiaomi Mi 9. I will choose the Galaxy S10e because of its Infinity-O Display that embeds the front camera, as well as its attractive canary yellow color variant and its more compact design. But someone may like the Xiaomi Mi 9 due to its stunning glass back available in gradient hues changing colors depending on the light and the viewing angle. Instead, LG G8 ThinQ has the best build quality and it should be the most resistant phone. It has both the military certification and it is also waterproof. Samsung Galaxy S10e is waterproof, while Xiaomi Mi 9 does not offer any kind of water resistance.

Display

Despite having the biggest notch, LG G8 ThinQ has the most advanced display. It is the only Quad HD+ panel of the trio. It has 100 percent of DCI-P3 coverage and it supports the HDR10 and Dolby Vision standards for perfect color reproduction. Samsung Galaxy S10e should come right after with its Dynamic AMOLED screen and the HDR10 technology, but note that it has a smaller 5.8-inch display.

Hardware/Software

In each case, you get a flagship-class hardware department. So, there will be marginal differences between the performances of these devices. All come with the Snapdragon 855 chipset excluding the European version of the Galaxy S10e, and they have up to 8 GB of RAM except LG G8 that only comes with 6 GB RAM. But Samsung Galaxy S10e goes up to 256 GB, while the others stop at 128 GB. Further, Xiaomi Mi 9 has no expandable storage, while Galaxy S10e and LG G8 ThinQ have a micro SD slot.

Camera

On the paper, Xiaomi Mi 9 looks like the phone with the most outstanding cameras. However, we still had no chance to test each of these devices’ cameras, so we can not give you a final verdict about them. By the way, all of them are outstanding camera phones. LG G8 ThinQ and Xiaomi Mi 9 are equipped with triple cameras including an ultrawide and a telephoto lens, while Galaxy S10e lacks the telephoto lens but comes with a variable aperture on the primary sensor, so it should shoot stunning photos even in low light conditions.

Battery

LG G8 ThinQ has the biggest battery, but we are not sure that it will provide the longest battery life. Indeed, it has a display with a higher resolution and we did not always like how LG optimized the batteries of its phones. Samsung Galaxy S10e has a much smaller battery, so it should not be the winner of this comparison as well. Xiaomi Mi 9 sits in the middle, but with its Full HD+ display, if it has a good software optimization, it may result as the winner of the battery comparison.

Price

Samsung Galaxy S10e will cost €779/$749, while Xiaomi Mi 9 is already on pre-order in the global market for just €450/$512. We still do not know the price of the LG G8 ThinQ, but if it will cost more than €550/$626, then Xiaomi Mi 9 wins this comparison because of its higher value for money.
