Huawei, which is currently under immense pressure due to the China-USA trade war, has something good to look forward to. The company is all set to beat the sales of Apple iPhones to take the second place in the global smartphone sales market.
While Huawei has beat Apple for the second spot in the global smartphones sales in previous quarters, this will be the first time that Huawei will beat Apple in full-year smartphone sales.
The Chinese company has already shipped more than 200 million units this year and has managed to greatly increase sales in China, Europe, and Africa. As per the report, it has already achieved more than 30 percent jump in global unit sales from the 153 million sold in 2017.
The most popular smartphone series from the company has been the Huawei P20-series, which primarily focuses on the camera performance, which features camera sensors co-developed with Germany’s Leica. The company’s head of consumer business said that it’s possible Huawei becomes the world’s top smartphone maker by the end of next year, pointing to strong growth in Europe and China.
According to the data from International Data Corp. (IDC), Huawei controlled 10.4 percent of the global smartphone market in 2017, behind Samsung Electronics’ 21.6 percent and Apple’s 14.7 percent. However, Huawei came in second behind Samsung for the first time in the April-June quarter and kept its place ahead of Apple in July-September as well.
However, it’s difficult for Huawei to hold on the spot for long given that the company is facing bans in key markets, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia. A few countries and telecom companies are also shying from using Huawei communications equipment. This is bound to hurt the sales of the company’s phones in 2019.
During the OPPO Developer Conference that was held yesterday in China, OPPO Vice-President and President of Software Engineering Division Wu Hengang introduced Breeno voice assistant. The intelligent assistant from OPPO integrates perception, decision-making and learning skills through natural interaction. The Chinese manufacturer hopes that it will become the universal ecological hub of all things.
Breeno consists of 7 modules such as advice, screen recognition, awareness, speed, voice, driving and space. For instance, an OPPO smartphone user at the airport will see Breeno automatically suggesting boarding entry information. At the same time, it will also show flight information at the bottom of the screen.
Breeno can better understand the needs of the users through the convergence of perceptual technology and natural interaction. Cognitive skills such as natural understanding, knowledge mapping, situational calculation and customized suggestions allows Breen to understand the world more comprehensively.
Hengang is of the view that with the arrival of 5G+ era, there will be deep integration of 5G, AI, cloud computing, AR and other technologies that will result in production of new hardware and services. OPPO phones will be serving as a smart hub for all these technologies. He added that Breeno will be made an open platform that will enable developers to take advantage of the AI capabilities of the company. In future, OPPO will be made available on phones across different brands.
Various OEMs are providing their own version o of voice assistant on their supported devices. Vivo phones come with Jovi assistant whereas Samsung smartphones are loaded with Bixby assistant. Xiaomi phones that are available in China come with Xiao AI. Google Assistant is widely available across various Android devices since it is available for download through Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Amazon’s Alexa assistant is also available for download for Android and iOS devices. OPPO’s Breeno is a new entrant compared to its competitors. In the coming, the company may make it available on wide range of its smartphones.

Smartphone manufacturers are currently trying to offer devices with full-screen display and minimal bezels. With the trend that popularised after Apple launched iPhone with a notch, other smartphones have picked up the trend and have even pushed it further.
A few China-based manufacturers like Oppo, Vivo, Huawei, and others have come up with unique smartphone designs that eliminate the need of a display notch. Now, it looks like Samsung is also trying for the same, with its own take.
Samsung Galaxy Note9
According to the report from Korean news outlet ETNews, the South Korean giant will showcase its new “Sound on Display” (SoD) OLED display panels during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 next month in Las Vegas, US. As the name itself suggests, in SoD panel, the sound emits from the display itself and eliminates the need for external speakers.
Samsung’s Sound on Display technology uses vibration and bone conduction, which gives the company the opportunity to place yet another component beneath the screen’s surface, providing more room for the display.
This was first demonstrated by the company during SID DisplayWeek in May this year. It was showcased on a device featuring a 6.22-inch display and 2960 x 1440 pixels screen resolution. The technology, which LG is also working on, could help manufacturers turn the whole screen into a speaker.
While the company is all set to publicly demonstrate its new Sound of Display technology, there’s no information regarding its availability for manufacturers or to know certainly that it is ready for the commercial launch.
Given that it will be showcased during CES 2019, we have no doubt that the Sound on Display won’t be available in the company’s upcoming flagship smartphones for the year 2019 and we highly doubt its available in early 2020 as well. Only time will tell when we’ll be able to experience this new SoD panels from Samsung.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is one of the smartphones with the best camera you can purchase right now. The phone packs some really nice camera features but there is one overlooked feature which is the Underwater Camera mode. The guys at Android Authority have given it a spin and released a review.
The underwater mode is designed to allow you to take photos under the water. Even though the phone has an IP68 rating, the first thing you see when you switch to the mode is a reminder that tells you to switch to a Huawei waterproof phone case (pictured above). It also warns the user to stick to operating instructions as damages to the phone caused by misuse will not be covered by warranty.
Unfortunately, the Huawei waterproof phone case is only available in China. Thus the test was done with a generic waterproof phone case. In underwater mode, the volume buttons are the controls you need. Volume up is for taking photos (long press for burst photos) and volume down is for recording videos. The volume up button also serves as the pause button while recording while pressing the volume down ends recording.
So where does the Mate 20 Pro need improvement? First, camera modes are limited. The selfie camera doesn’t work and you can’t use wide-angle or telephoto in this mode which is a bummer just in case you wanted to take that dope shot while snorkeling.
Another place where the underwater mode falls short is in how to exit the mode. Huawei says you should press and hold a certain area below the viewfinder. Seeing as you shouldn’t even need to touch the screen in that mode, setting the exit button as a touch gesture seems stupid.
According to the reviewer, less than a minute after he began swimming, the phone had exited underwater mode and was now in the settings menu. Apparently, water interfered with the display and did that. Other phone manufacturers that have phones with an underwater mode such as Hisense and CAT use a hardware button or a series of gestures to exit the mode.
Xiaomi Mi Play inaugurated a brand new series of devices from the Chinese giant, which is located in the mid/low-end segment. That is why this device is a perfect rival for the newly-announced Huawei Enjoy 9 and Asus Zenfone Max (M2), two other impressive alternatives available with a price tag inferior to €200 in Asia. These handsets are perfect for you if you are looking for a device which is never great, but never gives disappointments despite having an incredibly low price tag. If you belong to this range of users, go ahead and check out this specs comparison.

Design
The design is the key point of Xiaomi Mi Play. It is one of the most elegant and beautiful handsets sold for less than €200. Unlike Huawei Enjoy 9 and Asus Zenfone Max M2 which are full metal unibody phones, Xiaomi Mi Play has a glass back and you can get it in two gradient color variants or in black. Further, it comes with a waterdrop notch and very thin bezels, and it is more compact and lightweight than its opponents thanks to its smaller display. That is why I like it more aesthetically. Between Asus Zenfone Max M2 and Huawei Enjoy 9, I would choose the latter because it has a smaller notch and a more attractive rear design.
Display
Xiaomi Mi Play has the best display because it provides a higher level of detail. Indeed, it is the only device to sport the Full HD+ resolution, while Asus Zenfone Max M2 and Huawei Enjoy 2 have below-average HD+ displays. This plays an important role when it comes to energy consumption given that low-resolution displays are more efficient, but it decreases the viewing quality. Xiaomi Mi Play also has the smallest display and thanks to the higher pixel density it will look more detailed than other Full HD+ displays.
Specs & Software
Xiaomi Mi Play and Asus Zenfone Max M2 are superior devices when it comes to hardware and performance. The MediaTek Helio P35 found on the Mi Play is a valid rival for the Snapdragon 632 by Qualcomm inside the Asus Zenfone Max M2. I personally like the Snapdragon 632 more because of its GPU. Further, Asus Zenfone Max M2 has a micro SD dedicated slot allowing to use both the dual SIM slot and the expansion slot at the same time. Android 8.1 Oreo is installed out of the box on each of these handsets, and it is customized by a proprietary user interface. Basing on the current software support from the companies, we believe Xiaomi Mi Play will most likely be the first, if not the only one, to get Android Pie in the coming year.
Camera
Do not expect high-end cameras from these handsets, but all of them can provide a decent photo quality, at least when light conditions are good because when it gets dark they start becoming disappointing. The one I like more is Asus Zenfone Max M2 because it features a LED flash on the front side for a better selfie quality in the dark. Anyways, note that there are just marginal differences in photo quality between these devices.
Battery
The longest-lasting phone is definitely the Asus Zenfone Max M2 because of its 4000 mAh battery paired with very efficient components, such as the Snapdragon 632 chipset. Right after, there is Huawei Enjoy 9 which can achieve almost the same battery life in most of the scenarios. Xiaomi Mi Play is much inferior and it is not a battery champion like its opponents. It can just reach a sufficient battery life: one day with a moderate use, while the other twos can last more than one day with a stressed use.
Price
While specs are definitely not the strongest points of these devices, the price is the most important thing. Xiaomi Mi Play debuted in China with a starting price tag of just $160/€140 + 10 GB of free data traffic for 12 months, Huawei Enjoy 9 costs just $145/€127 in its base variant and Asus Zenfone Max M2 was launched with a starting price of $195/€170 in India. I would personally go for the Asus Zenfone Max (M2) because of its big battery and good performance. I would not choose Xiaomi Mi Play because, even though it has a better design and a better display, its 3000 mAh battery is not enough for my use. On the other hand, Huawei Enjoy 9 has a lower-end SoC than Asus Zenfone Max M2 and this would make me spend those $50 more to get a faster and smoother user experience thanks to the Snapdragon 632. Last but not least, the front-facing LED flash and the micro SD dedicated slot are always useful things.
Nokia and Asus have just unveiled two potential best-buys of 2019: Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) and Nokia 8.1. The first is the successor of Zenfone Max Pro (M1), one of the best selling affordable phones of 2018, while the second is the European version of the Nokia X7 and it is the successor of the Nokia 7 Plus for Europe. Besides Nokia 8.1, another important mid-ranger recently hitten European shelves: Oppo RX17 Neo. This is an in-depth comparison between these three beasts available at very interesting prices.

Design
If you like to show your smartphone to your friends and you want the most beautiful device, there is no much better than the Oppo RX17 Neo on its price range. Indeed, it comes with a refined glass back available in stunning gradient colors, and it also features a display with a very high screen-to-body ratio thanks to the OnePlus 6T-like waterdrop notch. Further, the device features an in-display fingerprint reader, so its rear side is very clean. Even though it is not at the same level of Oppo, even Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) has impressive aesthetics, especially thanks to its elegant glass back.
Display
The most impressive display is again the one found on the Oppo RX17 Neo, thanks to its Super AMOLED technology making colors very brilliant, a larger diagonal and very deep blacks. However, it remains a midrange-class panel and it is not anything spectacular. Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) and Nokia 8.1 have average IPS panel with a Full HD resolution, sufficient but again nothing special.
Hardware & Software
The strong point of Nokia 8.1 is under the hood. It features a way better chipset: the Snapdragon 710 running at a max frequency of 2.2 GHz, while its opponents have the older and less powerful Snapdragon 660. You can get Nokia 8.1 with up to 6 GB of RAM and with Android One, a stock version of Google’s operating system which gets updated faster compared to Oppo’s Color OS and Asus’ custom forks. Oppo RX17 Neo and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 come with the same chipset but the former has more internal storage (128 GB), while the latter boasts a micro SD dedicated slot leaving the dual SIM slot always free and usable.
Camera
If you are searching for the best camera on the rear side, you should go for Nokia 8.1 as its dual camera with Carl Zeiss optics and OIS can achieve definitely better results. On the other hand, Oppo RX17 Neo is better for selfies and it has a very advanced algorithm and AI-backed features for its 25 MP front camera. Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) is definitely not a camera phone and it should bring just an average camera performance.
Just like every device from the Max line-up, Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) is mainly focused on the battery life. It comes with a huge 5000 mAh unit which is able to last even two days of intensive use on a single charge. But note that it does not feature a fast charging technology, so it will take a while to reach 100 percent. Oppo RX17 Neo and Nokia 8.1 have a great battery life as well, but they are far from the results reached by Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2). But at least Nokia 8.1 is able to charge fastly.
Price
The battery life is my main concern when I am looking for midrange handsets and, given that Asus Zenfone Max Pro (M2) has even the lowest price tag (€237/$270 in India), for me it is the device with the best value for money. But overall, Nokia 8.1 is the best phone in this trio. It will cost you about €400/$450, while Oppo RX17 Neo debuted in Europe with a price tag of about €350/$398.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017, OPPO had showcased a dual camera setup with 5x loseless zoom. Recently spotted patent documents have revealed that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is now working on a 10x hybrid optical zoom technology camera. According to popular tipster Ice Universe, an OPPO official has confirmed that the company will be showcasing the 10x zoom camera tech at the MWC 2019 tech expo in Barcelona, Spain in February.
The patent sketches have revealed a dual camera setup with a flash unit. Unfortunately, the patent documents that explain the hybrid zoom technology are not available. OPPO that has six research institutes and four R&D across the globe is known for providing innovative features on its smartphone. The OPPO Find X that released this year is the world’s first smartphone to feature a slide-out assembly for the front and rear cameras.
The 5x loseless zoom technology that OPPO had demonstrated at MWC last year include a dual camera module with a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. The latter is hidden in the camera module in an innovate periscope-like structure. It also includes a prism to divert the light to the telephoto lens for deeper zoom. OPPO’s 5x loseless zoom technology is yet to be commercialized.
Rumors are rife that the 10x zoom camera technology by OPPO will be first seen on the OPPO F19 and F19 Pro smartphones. The F19 duo could be fueled by Snapdragon 675 chipset and a notch-less screen. Probably, the F19 models may feature an in-screen camera hole display.
