Big data has become the new oil of big tech companies across the globe as these giant corporations try to better understand the customer. However, recent big controversial incidents of data theft privacy breach with some high-profile companies have also opened the eyes of users. This is more so the case in China where consumers are becoming wary of the loose rules and guidelines that protect their private data. A new study conducted by the China Consumers Association revealed today that many popular Chinese apps collect an alarming amount of personal data.
According to the study, 100 apps were reviewed out of which 91 apps were found to be involved in the practice. The personal data that these applications collected included user location, contact lists and even mobile numbers on the user’s smartphone. Amongst the most notable apps that were reviewed from the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store included Alipay from Ant Financial Services, popular photo-editing app Meitu, bike-sharing platform Ofo and even messaging apps like QQ and WeChat from Tencent Holdings.
The matter is even more serious for other small-scale apps revealed the study. “The problem [of excessive data harvesting] is especially severe among smaller app providers, which have no privacy clauses or provide unreasonable terms.” said the report.
The report comes as tech companies are scaling up their efforts to harvest data which will be used for Artificial Intelligence initiatives in 2019. However, the general populace has become quite aware due to high-profile cases that came into public view this year. In early 2018, China’s three big tech giants – Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent were questioned over their data harvesting practices in Mainland.

If you think the first generation Honor Magic was a good smartphone, then the newly released Honor Magic 2 would definitely leave you in awe. The device could be described in no less a term than a premium flagship phone. That is due to the sleek glass back with a gradient finish, slider design, six cameras, Kirin 980 and lots more. The beautiful device has now been reviewed on our YouTube channel by one of Gizmochina’s tech editor, Adam.
The review is definitely a complete expository of the entire device as the reviewer takes us through the features you’ll find on the device. Some of the innovative features include the screen fingerprint sensor, the triple front and triple rear cameras. Yet another spectacular feature is the slider design which is pretty impressive. The slider design ensures the device comes without a notch on top of the display. The design of the slider is also noticeably different from those of Xiaomi or any other OEM with one of such designs. The slider slides against the rear of the phone which ensures it has some rigidity.
Adam describes the Honor Magic 2 as one fine beast for gaming. That is because it features a powerful Kirin 980 chipset which ensures the phone doesn’t stutter or lag even during heavy gaming. The phone also comes with a decent battery which charges very fast as a result of the phone’s 40W battery. We’ll leave you to judge if the Honor Maic 2 is a hit or miss after watching the video from above. Do remember to subscribe to Gizmochina’s YouTube channel.

Design
If you are looking for the most impressive design, you should grab either a unit of the Huawei Nova 3 or Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro. Indeed, the former carries the highest screen-to-body ratio thanks to its very narrow chin, and it comes with a stunning glass back available in gradient color variants. The latter has an in-display fingerprint reader, so it sports a totally clean back, except for the vertical dual camera setup on the top left corner.
Display
Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro has the most stunning display because it is able to provide a better color accuracy. Indeed, it has DCI-P3 coverage and it is HDR10-compliant, and it also has a Super AMOLED panel. Huawei Nova 3 has the most disappointing display, a classic IPS with an average quality, while Meizu 16 sits in the middle.
Specs & Software
If you want the fastest and smoothest device, we recommend you the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro for both its hardware components and its huge software optimization. It is equipped with the octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset by Qualcomm, up to 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. I also like the software of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro more because it is customized by MIUI. Meizu 16 is almost at the same level and it features exactly the same hardware side, but its custom UI is Flyme OS. Huawei Nova 3 is a step back with a less powerful Kirin 970.
Camera
Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro has the best hardware performance as well as the best camera department, with two 12 MP rear cameras, 2x optical zoom, and OIS. It captures a stunning detail even in low-light conditions and it can even record 4K videos at 60 fps. The second place goes to Huawei Nova 3 with an above average rear camera and a dual front camera.
Battery
Meizu 16 and Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro did not satisfy us so much when it came to battery life. They have below-average batteries compared with today’s standards. But Huawei Nova 3 is convincing thanks to its bigger 3750 mAh battery which can last for one day even with a pretty intensive use.
Price
These devices’ prices range from about €400 to about €500. Meizu 16 and Huawei Nova 3 are currently available on the €400/$453 price range and Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro costs about €500/$567 but you can also find it at €450/$510 thanks to online street prices. The device I like more is definitely the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro, but not for its battery life. If you want a long lasting phone, then choose Huawei Nova 3.

Less than a month following the update that brought Magic UI 2.0, the Honor Magic 2 is getting another update. The update doesn’t bring much save for a nifty new feature to HiVision (Honor’s take on Google lens) and a fingerprint scanner optimization.
The new update is 591MB in size and brings your phone’s version number to version 9.0.0.131 (C00E131R1P19). The changelog says owners can now use HiVision to calculate food weight and calories. All you have to do is point your camera at a food and the phone will attempt to tell you the number of calories it has.
According to XDA Developers, the feature isn’t perfect as it incorrectly identifies some food. For example, it wrongly identifies an onion as a steamed dumpling. However, future updates may improve the feature.
The update also optimizes the fingerprint reader and should result in faster unlocking. The phone has an optical in-display fingerprint scanner.

A recent 2018 report on visually impaired internet users released by Tencent had shown that there are more than 17 million visually impaired people in China, and that 75% of the visually impaired users are after 80s and 90s. In terms of online habits, the report also shows that 95% of visually impaired users use mobile phones to access the Internet. Out of this number, nearly 90% of visually impaired users choose mobile phone brands Huawei, Apple and Xiaomi.
The report also shows that visually impaired users have higher demand for knowledge content, and inconvenient operation is the main problem encountered when accessing information on their phones. Most smartphones today are equipped with a “blind mode” such as “VoiceOver” on iOS for iPhones and “TalkBack” for Android phones. Both features allows texts to be read out by voice, making it easier and more convenient for visually impaired people to use their smartphones.
For its continued efforts in this regard, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has reportedly lauded Xiaomi’s efforts in ensuring that persons with disabilities are given equal opportunities to b able to utilise technology which also ensures they are fully integrated into society. The UN agency did this in a post on its official Weibo account. The post also had Xiaomi’s official Weibo account as well tas that of Lei Jun as mentions. The post also contains a video which demonstrates how visually impaired individuals are able to use Xiaomi smartphones. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun was quick to respond to the recognition by UNESCO. Here’s his response- “Thanks to the UN’s recognition of Xiaomi’s work. We will always insist on making friends with all users and continue to invest in information accessibility, truly enabling everyone in the world to enjoy the beautiful life brought by technology”.
One feature that may appear in notebooks that will be released next year is 4K OLED displays as a Korean publication has reported that Samsung has successfully developed 4K OLED displays for notebooks.
According to the source, the panels which are manufactured by Samsung Display will come in 13.3”, 14” and 15.6” sizes – the common display sizes for computers. It also says Samsung will adopt the display for use in its own notebooks and is also in talks with HP, Dell, and Lenovo.
The 4K OLED displays are said to be thin, have wide viewing angles and low levels of blue light. Samsung is expected to showcase the first notebooks with 4K OLED panels as early as CES 2019 which is about a month away.
Samsung is presently the top phone manufacturer globally in terms of market share but the company’s fiercest rival is Apple which sits at the second spot but earns more revenue from its phones than Samsung. This rivalry has seen Samsung pitch various ads that try to persuade Apple fans to try out its Android phones. The company has also employed the services of several brand ambassadors in its major markets cutting across several regions. The ambassadors are usually under contracts with a clause that prevents them from being seen in public using the phones of its rivals such as an iPhone.
Who would thought Samsung will be the one that’ll promote Apple products itself? That is what Samsung’s Nigerian Twitter handled just did when a promotional message for the Galaxy Note 9 was posted from an iPhone. Apparently, the persons responsible for managing the official Samsung Nigeria Twitter account didn’t even own the latest Samsung model. The gaffe was soon removed and the account even deleted but not before it was spotted by tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee who got a screenshot.
Samsung must have realised by now that its fans and even its staff lack the brand loyalty possessed by Apple fans. Earlier last month, the same error was made by Samsung’s Saudi Arabian Twitter feed also posted a similar promotional message last month for the Galaxy Note 9, which also was tweeted using the Twitter for iPhone app. At several times, Samsung’s brand ambassadors have been caught using an Apple iPhone in public. What we can take from all these reports is that the iPhone is usually the preferred brand which explains why the brand still remains the most profitable despite Samsung selling more units annually each year.

It appears Samsung will indeed be the first manufacturer to launch a phone with a hole in its display. Earlier today, Huawei announced the Nova 4 which also has a hole in its display will launch on December 17. Now Samsung’s poster for the Galaxy A8s has surfaced and it shows the phone will be coming a week earlier.
The Galaxy A8s was first teased a few months ago at the launch of the Galaxy A9s and Galaxy A6s in China. Now, it finally has a release date and that day is December 10. The poster revealing the launch date was posted on the official Weibo account of Samsung mobile.

This is probably a confirmation that the design (Infinity O display) will show up in future devices (read Galaxy S10 series).
OnePlus, in collaboration with British automotive company, McLaren, will unveil a special edition of the OnePlus 6T on December 11. Referred to as the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, the phone will be unveiled in Woking, England. OnePlus has now confirmed it will be coming to China too.

The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition will share the same design, save for the color, with the regular OnePlus 6T. However, its internals is rumored to be a bit different.
