LG collaborates with major China manufacturers for foldable phones

Foldable phones are not new in the gossip market, they are here from the past few years. This time, the manufacturers seem to be actually in works on foldable phones. As like of Samsung, LG is also developing a useful foldable device and is scheduled for launch next year. In order to enter the new era of foldable devices, LG Display is partnering with various China manufacturers. According to a new report, it is believed that LG is jointly working on smartphone panels with Huawei, Xiaomi and Lenovo.

lg display

A new report from the Korean media seems legitimate, as a group involvement is required to build next-generation devices. Mainly, foldable devices need a lot of research and development for its flexible display, panel, and case. Working together with each other will fasten the process and will ultimately lead to a successful device at the right time.

Further, as per the report, LG Chem, the company’s chemical division is expected to produce the adhesives, substrates, and another essential material needed for flexible devices is going to be developed at its Cheongju factory. This cooperation will bring different inventions accessible to LG and other partnering companies as per the agreement.

Huawei will develop a 6-inch flexible panel with LG, while details about Xiaomi in the partnership seems unavailable. Lenovo and LG Display are also preparing a 13.3-inch flexible display having a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels. It is slated to begin production during the third quarter of 2019. Lenovo will use it in a commercial product by the end of 2019.

Unlike ‘inward’ design that other flexible devices are expected to carry, LG’s flexible device will be ‘outward’. It means both the halves of the display will be visible to users. One half will be on the front and the other on the rear side, though opening it would give you access to the full display.

LG Display is collaborating almost every big giant in China, despite its own LG electronics.

Although, Samsung is coming with the foldable device by the first half of next year. LG will reportedly showcase its foldable smartphone during CES 2019.

OPPO’s foldable phone design patent approved

During the recently held Samsung Developers Conference (SDC) 2018, Samsung unleashed the flexible Infinity Flex Displayv that will go be used on its first foldable smartphone. Before the Samsung event, China based Royole Technologies unleashed the FlexPai device as the world’s first foldable smartphonev. A recent report had revealed that Huawei is gearing up to launch a 5G foldable phone in the coming year. Many smartphones manufacturers are expected to release foldable phones in the coming years. OPPO has patented a new foldable smartphone design with SIPO patent office in China. The design was submitted in September and it was approved and published by the Chinese authority on Nov. 13.

The patent images reveal that OPPO had submitted multiple foldable phone designs. When it comes folding and unfolding, all the designs are same. However, these designs have different positionings for the camera. One design has two cameras placed on the sides where display is not present and in the other design, the two cameras can be seen positioned above the display. The volume buttons are available on the side of the device. The power key is placed on the top. The bottom side of the device includes a speaker, a 3.5mm audio jack and a port for charging.

After unfolding, the device will offer a tablet-like screen area. The exact size of the display is not known yet. When folded, one half of the display which will be usable will remain on the front whereas the other half will move towards the backside of the phone. It does not feature an outer display like the Samsung’s upcoming foldable phone.

OPPO-foldable-smartphone-patent

Smartphone companies are known for patenting different designs for their future phones. However, not all the patents end up as final product. In the past months, OPPO has also filed patents for multiple foldable phone design. OnePlus, OPPO and Vivo are all smartphone brands that belong to China’s BBK Electronics. OnePlus is known for borrowing smartphone designs from OPPO. If OPPO releases a foldable phone, there is a possibility that OnePlus may also soon launch its model.

What’s your opinion on the above foldable phone design by OPPO? Share us your views by posting your comments below.

LG V40 ThinQ may get Android 9.0 update soon, Geekbench listing reveal

LG announced the V40 ThinQ about a month ago with the major focus being on the combined five cameras which the device packs at its front and rear. The LG V40 ThinQ also comes with an attractive design but we are not sure how well the device will perform against the competition. However, if you own one or plan to get one, the latest Android Pie update may soon be available on the model, bringing the latest features which the new Android version offers.

This much was revealed by a GeekBench listing of an LG model with model number LGE LM-V405. This is the V40 ThinQ and it ran through the benchmark app with obviously a test build of Android Pie onboard. The model was also listed to have 6GB of RAM onboard.

Presently, only the LG G7 One, which was launched under Google’s Android One program, is enjoying Android 9.0.

Alleged Google Pixel 3 Lite camera samples appear to reveal photography prowess

A Russian tech blog has recently shared the key specs and live shots of the alleged Google Pixel 3 Lite smartphone. Now, the same site has shared some camera samples that were reportedly shot using the same Google phone.

Some of the below images that were shot indoors reveal that the Pixel 3 Lite will be able to capture good shots in dim light conditions.

The daylight images were shot in heavy overcast conditions, but the smartphone was able to capture almost every detail. The last image has a widescreen aspect ratio which indicates that the still shot from taken from a 4K video shot using the same phone.

All the above shots were probably shot using the prototype of the Google Pixel 3 Lite. The final product with updated camera features will offer even better photography experience

Rumors surrounding the smartphone have claimed that it is codenamed as Sargo. It is speculated that the handset is equipped with a rear camera of 12-megapixel and a selfie shooter of 8-megapixel. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones from last year are equipped with 12.2-megapixel rear and dual 8-megapixel front cameras. There is no confirmation on whether the alleged Pixel 3 Lite is also equipped with the same camera sensors.

The front side of the phone could be flanked with a 5.56-inch notch-less display with a tall aspect ratio. It may carry support for Full HD+ resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels. It could be fueled by Snapdragon 670 chipset and 4 GB of RAM. The handset may feature a 3,400mAh battery and it will be preloaded with Android 9 Pie OS.

Pixel 3 Lite

Leaked photos of the smartphone have suggested that it will be featuring a polycarbonate rear shell. It will be equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack and a rear facing fingerprint reader. The handset is likely to be priced between $400 and $500 and it may go official in Q1 2019.

Unlike competitor smartphones that feature multiple camera sensors, Google Pixel phones have always featured single rear camera. Google Pixel 2 from last year ranks among the top ten smartphones benchmarked by DxOMark which provides image quality ratings for mobile devices. The Pixel 3 that was announced in October is yet to appear in the list. It is very likely that the Pixel 3 will also rank well on DxOMark. The camera samples of the alleged Pixel 3 Lite also suggests that the phone will deliver stellar photography experience.

Xiaomi opens 500 Mi Stores at a go in India to set Guinness World Record

Xiaomi recently announced a rather bizarre Guinness World Record which it clinched by creating the biggest logo using light mosaic. That happened to be the company’s first Guinness record and it was no surprise the company chose to amplify the feat despite having no relationship whatsoever with is core smartphone business. The company has just clinched another Guinness World Record, this time around for simultaneously opening 500 Mi stores in India.

The Chinese giant already has a number of Mi Stores in India including the largest Mi Store at Bangalore but this time around, it chose to open 500 new stores all at once. The new brick and mortar stores are located in various cities in India and the record-setting grand opening took place on October 29 but the claim has to be cleared by GWR before announcing the achievement.

The record Mi Stores were not actually set up just for the Guinness World Record but are part of Xiaomi’s plans to expand rapidly in India. Xiaomi called the plan a “New Retail” model for India where it aims to provide “flagship store experience” to customers in rural areas. The Chinese firm may smash its own record if it attains its goals for 2019 which is to open 5,000 new brick-and-mortar stores and to employ over 15,000 people across the whole country.

As we reported you earlier today, Huawei Honor 8X became the best selling online mobile phone for October in China. But is this best seller really the best phone to purchase at this moment? In order to know it, we decided to compare it with other very important value for money phones of this second half of the year: Oppo Realme 2 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite, which are two other potential best sellers all around the world.

Design

The phone that I like more when it comes to aesthetics is undoubtedly the Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite. With just 7.5 mm of thickness, it is the thinnest one, and it is also the most beautiful one, in my opinion, thanks to its wonderful glass back which is available in gradient colors. Huawei Honor 8X is another outstanding phone in terms of design, but it lacks the gradient hues and it has above-average dimensions due to its bigger display. Oppo Realme 2 Pro has a polycarbonate design and that is disappointing.

Display

Most of midrange phones’ displays have a similar viewing quality, and that is the same with this trio of value for money phones. What makes me prefer the Huawei Honor 8X is the bigger size of the screen, which allows a more comfortable use for multimedia, gaming, and productivity. But you may like Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite more if you want a compact device.

Specs & Software

Given that it features a powerful Snapdragon 660 SoC by Qualcomm and up to 8 GB of RAM in its most expensive variant, Oppo Realme 2 Pro is the device with the most satisfying performance, especially on the gaming side. But Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is almost at the same level as it features the same chipset, but max 6 GB of RAM. Huawei Honor 8X has a Kirin 710 which is comparable to the Snapdragon 660 but it is slightly inferior according to our tests.

Camera

It is a very close fight between these handsets when it comes to the camera department. Overall, Oppo Realme 2 Pro satisfies me slightly more because of its impressive shots in low-light conditions. Nothing incredibly surprising, but a very nice performance for a simple mid-ranger.

Battery

Huawei Honor 8X has the biggest battery, but Oppo Realme 2 Pro is very close with its 3500 mAh capacity. Further, it has better software optimization. Which one lasts more depends on the scenario and there are very marginal differences in the battery life between these two phones. So we consider it a draw. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite cannot compete with its smaller 3350 mAh unit.

Price

You can grab a unit of the Huawei Honor 8X for about €250, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite costs more or less the same, while Oppo Realme 2 Pro costs less than €200 but it is an Asian exclusive. If you do not mind about having a great design with quality materials, Oppo Realme 2 Pro is definitely the best value for money phone and I would personally pick it. Otherwise, Huawei Honor 8X is a better purchase because of its bigger and comfortable display as well as a bigger battery. But if you do not like both big phones and poor materials, then Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is your choice.

Meizu 16S render shows triple rear cameras, no bezels and and no notch

The Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus were released back in August. The phones got praise for their design, build quality, specs, and price. Now, news of a successor has started to show up on the web.  Meizu‘s own CEO already confirmed the successor will be called the Meizu 16S (and probably a Meizu 16S Plus too). A fan has made a render for the Meizu 16S and while it may not be the real deal, it does look good.

Meizu 16S render

The Meizu 16S is shown in white like its predecessor. However, it ditches the bezels completely but doesn’t have a notch. Under the display is a fingerprint scanner since there is one on the back or on the sides.

The Meizu 16S render shown here has three rear cameras. They are positioned in the middle of the phone and arranged vertically. Below the sensors is a ring flash. The photo also shows the phone has a type-C port at the bottom flanked by a speaker grille and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The Meizu 16S will most likely be powered by the Snapdragon 8150 and will have up to 8GB of RAM. We also think it is time Meizu added support for wireless charging.

LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9 is a Google Assistant-powered smart display

First came smart speakers and now we have smart displays. The trend which started with Amazon’s Alexa-powered Echo Show now includes smart displays powered by Google Assistant. The latest is LG’s XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9, a smart display made by LG in collaboration with Google.

LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9

The LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9 (LG XBOOM WK9 for short) shares a similar design to the JBL Link View – a display sandwiched between two speakers, though the front of the LG XBOOM WK9 is rectangular with curved corners and not oval like the JBL.

The audio performance of the smart display was developed in partnership with Meridian Audio – an industry leader in audio solutions. LG says they worked together on providing the XBOOM WK9 with high-fidelity sound, accurate bass, and a precise vocal definition despite its small size.

LG XBOOM AI ThinQ WK9 assistant features

The LG XBOOM WK9 has an 8-inch HD display flanked by two 20W speakers. It also has a 5MP camera for video calls, a feature missing on Google’s own Home Hub smart display. It comes in black, weighs 1.51kg and has a power rating of 5.6W.

Since it is powered by Google Assistant, you can use the smart display to control your smart devices that work with Google Assistant or use it to control other LG ThinQ products.
