German Engineer patents quad notch display with the USPTO

The smartphone designing is not limited to the big corporations. Even, a single person can register the patents. Similarly, a qualified engineer from Germany at Inodyn NewMedia GmbH has registered a patent with quad notch display smartphone. The new patent has been spotted at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). If it’s believed than get ready to witness a new smartphone with quad notches.

It appears from the documentation that the new patent focuses on multiple notches at all corners rather than a single notch on the top side. It will give manufacturers an ability to extend functionality either by adding up quad cameras or introducing 3D display using those cameras. Alternatively, documents also mention a dual notch display device with more thinner bezels. The sensors can be organised in different ways, either by placing dual cameras on both the corners or by placing single cameras on all four corners. Although, the display has rounded corners around dual or quad notches.

Beside different notches, the smartphone’s earpiece will take place on top of the display or both sides of the display. Fingerprint sensor can be seen at the bottom right corner, and similarly, left side can be utilised for a UV sensor. Other sensors like infrared sensor, LED flash can make a place in any of the corners.

Moreover, the same design is applicable for foldable smartphones also. It can be further used in other devices such as wearables like watches, etc. The smartphone’s software can ensure that no content gets hidden under these notches. As an example, the text can be centre aligned, or it can be displayed little narrower. There might be many other ways through which these notches can be used to their fullest without hindering the user experience. Other media such as videos and images can be shown with a narrower border on top and bottom side in landscape mode.

OnePlus 6T durability test shows the in-display fingerprint reader isn’t affected by scratches

The latest OnePlus 6T flagship was only unveiled yesterday but the durability test by JerryRigEverything is already out. OnePlus took an innovative approach this time by inviting Zack Jerry to the launch event in New York where the device was disassembled before a live audience. That explains OnePlus’ approach of promoting the 6T as having a good hardware despite its fair pricing. That approach is likely going to continue working in its favour because the durability test shows the OP6T has a durable build.

The OnePlus 6T comes with a Corning Gorilla Glas 6 protection on top of the display which only sees minor scratch at a level 6 and deeper ones at level 7 of the Mohs’ scale. The device features an in-display fingerprint scanner embedded under the screen and scratch is supposed to affect the scanner, or so we thought. However, that isn’t the case as the in-display fingerprint reader still works fine despite having scratches on the glass surface.

The device comes with a metal back in Midnight Black with a frosted back finish and a glassy Mirror Black. The Midnight Black is the variant that went under the knife. The metal back still shows some level of durability even though you can just slap a protective casing on for more protection as harder metal will leave permanent scratches.

Red Hydrogen One to be available through AT&T and Verizon from November 2

Red, a company which has its roots in digital cameras for movie productions, has already announced its first smartphone — Red Hydrogen One, an innovative phone that will make it stand out from the crowd.

Now, after a wait of more than a year, the smartphone is almost here. It is scheduled to go on sale in the United States through AT&T and Verizon from 2nd November. It is priced at $1,245 and both companies are offering monthly payment plans.

The retail pricing of the phone is $100 more expensive than it was for the buyers who pre-ordered the device when the company first announced its plan for the phone. The Hydrogen One was supposed to launch in early 2018 but it was pushed back multiple times.

The Red Hydrogen One’s highlight is a proprietary display technology known as ‘4-view’ (4V), which is said to provide a hologram-like experience. People who have used the phone says that it’s an interesting effect despite nothing actually popping out of the display.

For the company’s display technology to reach its full potential, it’ll require support for other developers. Regular movies won’t be viewable in 4V since they need to be made specifically for it. But the company is offering a handful of 4V-compatible movies and plans to extend the catalog to more than 100 titles in the future.

As the phone’s launch was pushed back multiple times, the phone is launching with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, which powered last year’s flagship devices, instead of the Snapdragon 845 which is present in current flagships.

The phone features a 5.7-inch Quad HD LTPS-TFT display that offer 2560 x 1440 pixels screen resolution and has Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It packs 6GB of RAM with 128GB storage while the Titanium version comes with 6GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage.

It runs Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box and there’s a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for added protection. The device drives power from a 4,500mAh battery. While there’s no mention of any fast charging technology, it should at least support Quick Charge 3.0.

US blocks exports for Chinese semiconductor firm Fujian Jinhua

In another blow, US has cut off the trade exports for Chinese semiconductor firm Fujian Jinhua. The commerce department in the US has put the company on the US export ban list citing significant risks which will threaten the viability of American suppliers of chips for the military. It means Fujian Jinhua cannot purchase such products from U.S. firms. This new escalation will deepen the trade war between the US and China.

Amid of hard sanctions from both the countries, international companies are bearing the pain. Similarly, Fujian Jinhua is barred from getting any kind of components for its semiconductor business from Micron Technology in the US. Further, the sanctions can also be seen as an action to recent allegations from Micron Technology which accused Jinhua of stealing intellectual property. Last year, after the accusations from Micron, the Commerce Department came into action and since then Jinhua was on the US radar. The commerce department has given the reason of “significant risk” which might infringe on national security.

“When a foreign company engages in activity contrary to our national security interests, we will take strong action to protect our national security,” he said. “Placing Jinhua on the Entity List will limit its ability to threaten the supply chain for essential components in our military systems.”

This is a major blow for Jinhua which relies on components from American companies for its semiconductors business. It would definitely impact the Chinese state-owned firm growth and will bear the brunt in the upcoming few months. Further, it may lead to a more intensive trade war between both the countries.

Fujian Jinhua is based in East China’s Fujian province, was founded in 2016 and is backed by the provincial government. Fujian Jinhua is coming up with a new factory in China with the cost of $5.7 billion. It’s a next step from the company to become a global leader in the semiconductor business.

A similar action by the Commerce Department was also seen last time on ZTE when the US blocked components sale to the Chinese firm. Though, the things have been little relaxed after the intervention of China’s President Xi Jinping in May this year.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite Begins its global journey, now available in France & Mexico

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi last month announced the Mi 8 Lite in China as a trimmed down version of the flagship Mi 8 Pro. The company later hinted that the device will roll out for the global market beginning with Ukraine. However, Xiaomi’s global spokesperson, Donovan Sung has revealed on Twitter that the device is now available in Ukraine and France. He also revealed that the Mi 8 Lite will be made available soon in other of Xiaomi’s global markets.

Despite falling into the midrange category, the Mi 8 Lite has flagship looks, sporting a premium glass back design. The device is available in Twilight Gold, Deep Space Gray and Dream Blue colour variants. All three use the gradient colour hue and that makes the Mi 8 Lite the first Xiaomi phone to utilise the Gradient Hue. The Mi 8 Lite sports a notch at the top of its display which houses a 24MP camera with AI capabilities for selfies and video calls. The device equally features a massive 6.26-inch FHD+ display in a 19:9 aspect ratio which ensures it fits the palm of most persons well and won’t look too bulky.

At the rear, there is a dual camera sensor stacked vertically at the upper left corner. The dual camera setup comprises a 12MP main sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor with an LED flash at the side. The device equally packs a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor at the upper middle aspect. At its heart is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset. The device comes in 4GB+64GB, 6GB+64GB and 6GB+128GB memory versions. It runs Android Oreo-based MIUI 10 out of the box and gets its juice from a 3,350mAh battery.

Xiaomi didn’t announce the pricing of the device in Ukraine or France. However, the pricing in China starts at 1399 yuan (~$200) for the 4GB +64GB memory version. The 6GB RAM + 64GB storage is priced at 1,699 Yuan ($248) and the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage model costs 1,999 Yuan ($292). The global market may likely get it at slightly higher prices. Online retailers like GearBest and others already stock the device at slightly higher price tags.

OnePlus 6T goes official with in-screen fingerprint scanner, smaller notch display and larger battery

Through an unveil in New York today, OnePlus has announced the brand new OnePlus 6T smartphone. Compared to the OnePlus 6 phone that was unveiled in May, the OnePlus 6T features a smaller notch display, improved cameras and a larger battery. It is the first OnePlus phone to feature an in-screen fingerprint reader. The external change that has arrived on the OnePlus 6T is the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack.

Design and Display

In terms of design, the OnePlus 6T bears an uncanny resemblance with sibling phone – the OPPO R17. The OP6T borrows the waterdrop notch design and in-screen fingerprint scanner features from the R17. Both phones do not feature 3.5mm audio jack.

Like the OPPO phone, the new OnePlus flagship features a vertical dual camera setup. The handset measures 157.5 x 75.7 x 8.2mm and weighs 185 grams. The smartphone offers certain level of water-resistance, but there is no confirmation on its IP rating. The smartphone can be availed in color variants such as Mirror Black and Midnight Black.

The OnePlus 6T has a 6.4-inch Optic AMOLED display that produces an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. Apart OPPO R17, the OnePlus 6T is the only other phone so far to feature Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The display of OnePlus 6T carries support for features such as Adaptive brightness, screen calibration and reading mode.

The OP6T features an optical under-display fingerprint scanner that can unlock the phone instantly. The function is dubbed as “Screen Unlock” by OnePlus. The other biometric security feature available on the OP6T is face unlock.

Front and Rear Cameras

The small notch at the frontside of the OnePlus 6T includes an f/2.0 aperture 16-megapixel Sony IMX371 camera. The selfie shooter supports EIS and 30 fps FHD video shooting.

The backside of the phone includes a vertical dual camera module. It comprises of a primary camera of Sony IMX519 16-megapixel with f/1.7 aperture. It offers features like OIS, EIS and PDAF. It is assisted by 20-megapixel secondary sensor with f/1.7 aperture. The dual cameras carry support for features such as HDR, timelapse, 4K video shooting, slow motion video recording (1080p) at 240 fps. The smartphone promises better low-light photography experience through new Nightscape feature that relies on AI for captured impressive shots in dim light surroundings.

Performance and Other Features

Like the OnePlus 6, the newly unveiled OnePlus 6T features the same Snapdragon 845 chipset. A larger battery of 3,700mAh capacity powers the smartphone. It is equipped with support for Dash Charge fast charging technology from the company. However, there is no support for wireless charging on the device.

The OnePlus 6T has arrived in 6 GB and 8 GB RAM LPDDRX variants. When it comes to storage, OnePlus has axed the 64 GB version which means the base model features 128 GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The highest configuration model of the OP6T includes 256 GB of UFS 2.1 storage. There is no microSD card slot on the device.

The OnePlus 6T is preinstalled with OxygenOS based Android 9 Pie OS. The OnePlus 6T features usual connectivity features like dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE, 2×2 MIMO, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS and USB-C.

Motorola Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus receive Android 8.1 update in the U.S

Google‘s latest Android 9.0 Pie version is already hitting a couple of models but Android Oreo still remains the dominant interface among Android phone users. So, it is sort of good news for Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus users in the U.S as Motorola has published on its website, release notes which show that the two models are both currently receiving an update to Android 8.1 Oreo. The Moto G5 and G5 Plus were both launched in March last year with Android 7.1 Nougat OS. This is also coming barely two weeks after the Moto G5S started receiving Android Oreo in the U.S.

According to the release details, the build of Android brings with it “new multitasking features, more efficient notification controls and improved data saver, battery features, new power menu UI and Bluetooth improvements.” In addition to the new features Android 8.1 Oreo brings to the table, the update carries the June 1st Android security update and improvements that exterminate bugs and enhance the stability of both models.

Already, the tech giant is already pushing the updates via OTA to eligible models. If you reside in the U.S, you really don’t have to wait for a notification to arrive. You can update manually, from your phone’s “Settings”, scroll down to “About phone” then click System Updates and then you’ll find the “Download” button. You must make sure your phone has at least 50% of battery power and that the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. After the update is downloaded, click on “Install.”

The AT&T-NETGEAR Nighthawk Mobile Hotspot is the first Snapdragon 855 device

The first Snapdragon 855 (or SM8150 as it may be called) powered device is not a mobile phone but a router. The AT&T NETGEAR NightHawk Mobile Hotspot unveiled a few days ago is actually the first commercially available device with Qualcomm’s next-gen flagship.

The NETGEAR NightHawk is a 5G mobile hotspot that was unveiled a few days ago and was used to carry out the world’s first millimeter wave mobile 5G browsing session. Since it has a Snapdragon 855 processor powering it, it means it also has the Snapdragon X50 5G modem. The mobile hotspot will be exclusive to AT&T and will go on sale later this year but a price has not yet been announced.

AT&T will be the first carrier to introduce 5G services in the United States. Their plan is to roll out services in at least 12 cities before the end of the year and bump it to 19 cities early next year.

First 5G devices aren't phones as proven by Verizon/Motorola and Moto Z3 + 5G mod. Qualcomm and its partners will first launch a Netgear 5G Mobile Router with SDM855+SDX50 5G modem coming to AT&T later this year + an HTC 5G (SD835+SDX50 5G device (VRheadset?) later this year

Design

There is not really a device which is more beautiful or has a way better build quality than each other in this trio. Lenovo S5 Pro has definitely the most original aesthetics, but it is all about tastes. All of these devices feature a full metal unibody design just like most of the lower-midrange phones released in the market in the last 2-3 years. So, nothing surprising but nothing disappointing at the same time.

Display

There are no important differences between the displays of these handsets as well. If you like to have the thinnest bezels, then you should choose Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro or Lenovo S5 Pro, while if you hate notches, you should choose Meizu Note 8. All of them are IPS panel with the same resolution and a similar screen size.

Specs & Software

Under the hood, these devices feature similar components as well. As Meizu Note 8 packs a Snapdragon 632 and its opponents boast a more powerful Snapdragon 636, you should go for the Redmi Note 6 Pro or Lenovo S5 Pro if you care about having the best performance. All the software sides of these handsets are highly customized, with the user interfaces Flyme OS, MIUI and ZUI, respectively.

Camera

The most satisfying camera department belongs to the Lenovo S5 Pro. It has a total of four cameras: two on the front and two on the back. The rear cameras have a bright aperture, high resolutions and they also support 2x optical zoom. Further, there is a dual front camera with amazing performances when there is light, which can also capture depth information.

Battery

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro is the champion of battery life as it packs a 4000 mAh battery which can achieve up to 2 days of usage on a single charge. The battery is supported by a wonderful optimization which makes it last even longer. However, it does not charge so fastly, so if you want a phone that charges rapidly you should choose Meizu Note 8.

Price

You can find all of these devices with a price tag of about €200/$227, which is a very affordable price for handsets like these. Given its better camera department and its stereo speakers, for me, Lenovo S5 Pro is the winner of the comparison. Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro takes the second place with its big and long lasting battery.

Meizu explains why it won’t release a 5G phone alongside other big names next year

Recently, U.S-based chipmaker Qualcomm announced during its 4G/5G summit, a list of OEMs that were described as committed partners for 5G rollout next year. The list contains popular brands such as ASUS, Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, HMD, HTC, Sony, Sharp, LG and Motorola. Others include Fujitsu, computer networking firm Netgear, wireless communications equipment maker Sierra and a couple of names that don’t sound familiar as far as mobile phones are concerned. One name that was conspicuously missing is innovative Chinese brand Meizu.

Meizu has been very vibrant in releasing smartphones with eye-catching design since the return of founder and current president Huang Zhang. A fan posed the question as to why the company isn’t among those who are expected to release a 5G-enabled phone in 2019. Mr Zhang’s response did confirm that Meizu isn’t going to release a 5G phone next year. The CEO clarified that the first wave of 5G infrastructure will be on trial basis. He also promised that the company will definitely launch a 5G mobile phone at the appropriate stage.

Qualcomm says its Snapdragon X50 modem will power the 5G technology on phone. The company is also working closely with telecommunication equipment manufacturers like Fujitsu, and several carriers in order to get the infrastructure running as early as possible. Widespread and efficient 5G connectivity is not likely going to be achievable next year. So, 5G phones next year may just be a marketing gimmick.

OnePlus sends out invite for OnePlus 6T China launch

The OnePlus 6T will be unveiled today in a few hours in New York. It will then be announced in India tomorrow. If you reside in China, OnePlus has sent out invites for an event on the 5th of November and the invites clearly state the event is for the OnePlus 6T launch.

The OnePlus 6T will be the second flagship phone from the Chinese manufacturer this year. OnePlus began the tradition of launching two flagships per year in 2016. The first in this line of second flagships is the OnePlus 3T and it was followed by the OnePlus 5T released last year.

According to those who have received the invite to the event, OnePlus may also announce some other products alongside the phone. We already know it will launch a new backpack but China may be getting more than just that.

The OnePlus 6T will be powered by the same chipset as the OnePlus 6 which is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor but that’s sort of where the similarities end. The new phone will have a new display design with a much smaller notch. It will also have an under-display fingerprint scanner and ditch the 3.5mm audio jack.
