Apple’s Secret Smart Glasses Project

While the tech giant has been tight-lipped about specific details, recent reports suggest that the company is running internal focus groups under the code name “Atlas” to gather insights on smart glasses, with its Product Systems Quality team leading the initiative. This research, which started last week, involves collecting feedback from employees on consumer preferences and market trends, with further studies planned soon.

This strategic move echoes Apple’s approach with previous products like AirPods, HomePod, and the recently unveiled Vision Pro. By understanding user needs and expectations, Apple aims to deliver a true AR experience that surpasses existing offerings.

However, the road to realizing Apple’s vision for smart glasses is a long one. Competitors like Meta and Snap have already introduced consumer smart glasses, and their true AR glasses are on the way, with prototypes in the early development stages.

However, Apple’s stringent quality standards and pursuit of cutting-edge technology may push the launch date to at least five years from now. Despite the significant challenges, Apple remains undeterred, investing heavily in research and development to overcome technical hurdles and deliver a seamless, user-friendly experience.

The potential approach involves creating a lightweight, stylish pair of glasses that seamlessly integrates with the iPhone, leveraging the smartphone’s processing power to deliver a rich AR experience. This strategy could help accelerate the development process and ensure a smoother user experience.

However, the ultimate goal is to develop a fully standalone pair of smart glasses that can operate independently, offering unparalleled freedom and flexibility. To achieve this, Apple will need to make significant advancements in battery technology, chip design, and display technology.

Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly set to release the Vision Pro 2 by 2025 or early 2026, featuring a powerful M5 chip to boost its augmented reality capabilities, while shelving plans for a more affordable Vision Pro due to concerns over demand. The new Vision Pro model will retain the sleek design of its predecessor but aims to deliver a more enhanced and immersive experience.

Choosing Between Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400 Smartphones: What’s Better?

When it comes to flagship smartphones, the processor is a major factor that showcases performance, features, and much more. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 are two of the most powerful chipsets in the market right now. Both of these promise the best performance on Android devices, but which one should you choose for your next smartphone purchase? Let’s find out in this comparison.

1. Snapdragon 8 Elite or Dimensity 9400: Performance

Snapdragon-8-Elite
Snapdragon 8 Elite

While the two processors have different core configurations, they are pretty comparable in terms of performance. In our first comparison between the two processors, we saw that the Snapdragon 8 Elite’s performance managed to rival the Apple A18 Pro. It was on par with the A18 Pro in single core test in GeekBench 6, while its multi core scores crossed over 10,000 points. A previous GeekBench sighting listed the device with 2884 (single) and 8840 (multi) points respectively. On AnTuTu, this chip managed to get a score of over 3 million. Regardless, it is one of the fastest processors for Android smartphones right now.

Meanwhile, the Dimensity 9400 was first seen getting a GeekBench score of 2818 points in the single core test, while its multi core scores reached 8847 points. Just like the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the MediaTek chip also crossed the 3 million mark on AnTuTu. So the Snapdragon 8 Elite performed better in GeekBench, while the Dimensity 9400 took the lead in AnTuTu (3,109,010 points vs 3,007,853 points respectively). Although in real world use, people would be hard pressed to notice a major difference. So let’s check out other avenues.

2. Thermals & Battery Performance

Qualcomm has claimed a 45% boost in CPU performance along with a 44% improvement in power efficiency. MediaTek also promises a 40% upgrade in both performance and battery efficiency as well. However, a recent real world test from C4ETech, which compared the Oppo Find X8 Pro (Dimensity 9400) and OnePlus 13 (Snapdragon 8 Elite), revealed that the Dimensity 9400 consumes less battery and runs cooler overall.

We have already seen reports of heating issues with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, so thermals could be one area where the Dimensity edges ahead. Battery efficiency could still be tweaked with optimizations and it is still early to tell how these chips perform over time. But this is a notable aspect to take into account.

3. Camera Support

Dimensity 9400 launched
Dimensity 9400

Both Qualcomm and MediaTek have updated their ISPs (Image Signal Processor) to support a single 320MP capture. The Snapdragon 8 Elite brings triple 48MP capture with Zero Shutter Lag, 8K@60fps, and 1080p slo-mo capture at 480fps. On the other hand, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 offers full range HDR zoom without losing the subject focus thanks to the new Imagiq 1090 ISP. It also has AI super zoom with 100x magnification and maximum video recording resolution of 8K. This includes 30fps and 60fps.

4. Which one should you choose?

Both the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Dimensity 9400 are top-tier chipsets, so the differences at this price point wouldn’t be the performance. Other factors come into play like camera specs of the smartphone you’re buying, its pricing, and more. As of right now, the Snapdragon 8 Elite on the Realme GT 7 Pro is the cheapest flagship phone in the market. However, it there have been reports of the device heating up during use. So it’s best to wait a bit more for more launches, so we have better options to choose from. During this time, brands would likely offer optimizations for their new premium phones, making them even better.

Honor 300 Pro display, processor, camera and battery detail leaks

Looks like Honor isn’t wasting any time. Hot on the heels of their flagship Magic 7 series launch, rumors about their upcoming mid-range 300 series are already surfacing online.

Expected to launch before the end of the year, details about the new lineup have started appearing, thanks to a post from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the Chinese social media platform.

According to the tipster, the Honor 300 series may move past the FHD+ displays of the 200 series, possibly featuring a sharper 1.5K resolution. It might also run on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

The leak also confirms earlier information from 3C certifications: the 300 series will support 100W wired charging. Wireless charging might also return, and security could get a boost with a single-point ultrasonic fingerprint scanner embedded in the display.

These specs likely apply to the top-tier model, possibly the Honor 300 Pro or Pro+. The previous 200 series included various models, from the standard 200 to the budget-friendly Lite and entry-level Smart. The 300 series will probably offer similar options.

In fact, four models in the lineup have recently received 3C certifications in China, with model numbers AMP-AN00, AMP-AN10, AMM-AN00, and AMG-AN00. While the exact names of these devices are still unknown, they’re likely all part of the Honor 300 series.

Additionally, a previous rumor suggests a more compact design for the standard version, while a leaked render of the Pro model hints at a distinctive rear camera layout, a triple-lens setup, and a curved display with minimal bezels.

With the launch window supposedly approaching, we can expect more details to surface in the coming weeks.  In the meantime, if you’re looking for a top-tier option from Honor, don’t forget about the recently launched Magic 7 series, featuring the Magic 7 and Magic 7 Pro models.

Here’s why Redmi A4 5G is an important phone for India

Xiaomi is gearing up to launch an important handset in India. The device is expected to be the most affordable 5G smartphone from the company retailing under ₹10,000.

The product in question is Redmi A4 5G. It is scheduled to go official in the country on November 20.

Here in this article let’s explore why this particular phone is crucial.

Redmi A4 5G

1. What makes Redmi A4 5G affordable?

The Redmi A4 5G houses a new entry-level 5G chip from Qualcomm. This system-on-chip (SoC) officially goes by Snapdragon 4s Gen 2.

Though it sounds like an upgraded version of Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, the chip is a watered-down variant. This is not bad since it is the primary reason the phone is affordable.

Despite being a downgraded chip, the SoC is better than offerings from MediaTek and Unisoc in the segment.

For the unaware, the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 is a 4nm chip comprising an octa-core CPU and an unnamed Adreno GPU. The CPU consists of 2 x Corex-A78 cores clocked at 2GHz and 6 x Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz.

The chip is primarily targeted at $100 5G smartphones. Thus, the Redmi A4 5G is the first device to use it as the lineup has been one of the top sellers since its introduction. The phone is expected to help popularise the chip.

2. The Competiton

Currently, there’s only one sub-₹10,000 5G smartphone in India called Tecno Pop 9 5G. Unfortunately, not many know about this phone which retails at ₹9,499. It is also the only handset to support contactless payments in its segment.

Soon, it will have a competitor in the form of Redmi A4 5G. The upcoming Xiaomi phone is tipped to cost just ₹8,499 (including offers). The selling price could be more or less the same as Pop 9 or a bit cheaper.

We expect more competitors to follow in the coming months.

3. The Future of Affordable 5G Smartphones in India

Following the launch of Redmi A4 5G, we expect more sub-₹10,000 5G smartphones in India.

These products will be either driven by the same Qualcomm chip or chips from other players.

MediaTek and Unisoc could be already working on a competitor to Snapdragon 4s Gen 2. In the meantime, they might lower the price of their existing entry-level 5G chips to help OEMs with the competition.

If you have been following the Indian smartphone market for a long time, you may have already got an idea of how history is repeating itself.

Exactly a decade ago, a similar important product debuted in India. This one too was from Xiaomi. For those wondering, we are talking about Redmi Note 4G, which laid the foundation for sub-₹10,000 4G smartphones in the country.

But will Xiaomi manage to recreate the success in the 5G era? Only time will tell.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip FE Tipped with Exynos 2400: New Budget-Friendly Flip Phone

Samsung is apparently working on a new budget foldable smartphones from its Galaxy Z series. These new models could be a part of the Fan Edition model and might be dubbed the Galaxy Z Fold FE and Galaxy Z Flip FE. While the brand has yet to share any official details regarding these tablets, the Galaxy Z Flip FE just surfaced in a fresh leak. So let’s check it out.

Galaxy Z Flip FE Featuring In-House Flagship Chip?

The information arrives from tipster Jukanlosreve who shared the details on X (formerly Twitter). The upcoming budget flip phone might be launching with the South Korean tech giant’s in-house flagship chip. Jukanlosreve claims that the Galaxy Z Flip FE will pack the Exynos 2400 SoC, which is the same high end chipset that powered the Galaxy S24 series. Considering how these are the brand’s 2024 flagship phones, so the Galaxy Z Flip FE packs some capable specs and features.

Samsung W25 Flip and Galaxy Z Flip 6-
Samsung W25 Flip (left) and Galaxy Z Flip 6-(right)

That’s not all, the recent Q3 earnings report had a Samsung executive hinted at an affordable foldable phone. So the brand’s foldable experience could be arriving with capable specs despite a more accessible price tag. To recall, the Galaxy FE devices have some premium specs for a mid range cost. In our previous report, the Galaxy Z Flip FE and Galaxy Z Fold FE were rumored to launch with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2.

This report also added that the Galaxy Z Fold FE and Galaxy Z Flip FE may launch with an Exynos chipset in certain markets. Based on what we know so far, the Galaxy Z Flip FE would likely be a cut-down version of the premium Galaxy Z Flip 6 model. While finer details are still at large, leaks point to the Galaxy Z Flip FE launching sometime next year. The tipster also claims that the next-gen Galaxy Z Flip 7 will launch with an Exynos 2500 SoC. Although this is still just an unconfirmed report at this point, so take this news with a pinch of salt and stick around for more updates.

OPPO leads Southeast Asia’s smartphone market for the first time in Q3 2024

The Southeast Asian smartphone market experienced notable growth in Q3 2024, with shipments increasing by 15% year-on-year, reaching a total of 25 million units, according to a recent report by Canalys. This growth reflects the region’s recovery and increased demand across various smartphone segments. Oppo emerged as the market leader, with other prominent brands like Samsung, Transsion, Xiaomi, and vivo following closely.

Oppo’s market dominance driven by entry-level success

Oppo led the Southeast Asian smartphone market in Q3 2024, shipping 5.1 million units and capturing a 21% market share. This growth is largely attributed to the brand’s focus on affordable entry-level models, particularly the Oppo A3, which resonated well with budget-conscious consumers. Oppo’s year-on-year growth rate of 29% highlights its effective strategy in appealing to the mass market with cost-effective devices.

Samsung held the second position, with a 16% market share in shipment volume, totaling 4.1 million units. However, Samsung’s shipment value share exceeded its volume share, reaching 23%, indicating a successful high-end strategy. The focus on increasing average selling prices (ASP) over shipment volume aligns with Samsung’s approach to prioritize profitability and strengthen its premium segment in the region.

Transsion, which includes brands like TECNO, Infinix, and iTel, ranked third with a shipment volume of 4 million units and a 16% market share. While Transsion has previously grown rapidly in Southeast Asia, its rapid growth appears to be flattening as the vendor shifts its focus from expanding market share to improving profitability and shipment value in the coming quarters.

Xiaomi and Vivo round out the top five

Xiaomi placed fourth in the market with 3.9 million units shipped and a 15% market share, benefiting from the success of affordable models like the Redmi 14C and A3. With a 21% year-on-year growth rate, Xiaomi has established itself as a strong competitor in the budget segment.

Redmi 14C
Redmi 14C

vivo completed the top five, shipping 2.6 million units and securing a 10% market share. Although Vivo’s shipments did not match the growth of its competitors, its continued presence in the top five underscores its consistent demand among consumers in Southeast Asia.

In summary, the Southeast Asian smartphone market shows a strong recovery. While Oppo leads the market with entry-level models, Samsung focuses on profitability through high-end and premium strategies. iQOO 13’s UFS 4.1 storage delivers 50% faster app installation; claims iQOO ahead of global launch

iQOO has officially launched its latest flagship, the iQOO 13, in China on October 30th, with a global release set for December 3rd. The smartphone arrives packed with high-end specs. Today, iQOO officially announced that the iQOO 13 includes a new fragmentation defragmentation function for the new UFS 4.1 storage module, and claimed that application installation speed and file copy speed have increased by 50% and 36%.respectively. This is a major improvement in performance and should result in a significant reduction in app-loading times as well.

Snapdragon 8 Elite with a secondary gaming chip

Under the hood, the iQOO 13 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, supported by LPDDR5X Ultra memory, a combination that scored an impressive 3 million points on AnTuTu. The iQOO 13’s performance suite is well-suited to handle high-end gaming demands, with optimized power efficiency and thermal control that reportedly allow it to sustain 60fps on Genshin Impact.

Additionally, the Q2 chip supports frame rate interpolation, delivering up to 144fps in select compatible games, while the super-resolution feature enables gaming in 2K. At launch, over 140 super-frame games and more than 100 super-resolution games are supported, including 98 that offer both features simultaneously. These features highlight iQOO’s dedication to providing a premium mobile gaming experience, making the iQOO 13 a powerful choice for gamers looking for flagship-level performance.

A larger battery within a slimmer body

The iQOO 13 packs a robust 6150mAh battery, up from iQOO 12‘s 5000mAh capacity. Despite this larger battery, the device remains impressively slim at 7.99mm, even thinner than the iQOO 12. The battery benefits from iQOO’s third-generation silicon negative electrode technology, contributing to extended battery life and efficient power management.

To complement this, the iQOO 13 supports 100W wired charging, with a charger that also offers PD output compatibility, making it suitable for charging PCs and tablets as well. This high-speed charger can fully recharge the phone in about 30 minutes, ensuring minimal downtime between uses. Additionally, a bypass charging feature allows the device to be powered directly from the adapter, reducing battery wear during prolonged gaming sessions.

In the front, the iQOO 13 sports a stunning 6.82-inch 2K (3168×1440) 8T LTPO flat display, developed with BOE’s latest Q10 luminous material. This advanced display delivers a 144Hz refresh rate, and a peak local brightness reaching an impressive 4500 nits, up from iQOO 12’s 3000 nits. iQOO also includes a custom eye-protection solution with circular polarized light, aimed at reducing eye strain during prolonged use.

Redmi K70 series discontinued, Redmi K80 expected to launch soon

Recently, many users in China noticed that the Redmi K70 series is out of stock. Wang Teng Thomas, the Deputy General Manager of Xiaomi’s China Marketing Department and General Manager of the Redmi brand, responded on Weibo by announcing the early completion of the K70’s sales lifecycle and its subsequent discontinuation. He added that the K70’s strong performance has been widely recognized, making it the best-selling phone in the 2000 Yuan (~$278) to 3000 Yuan (~$417) price range for 2024.

Redmi K80 series launching soon

Wang Teng Thomas also hinted at the upcoming Redmi K80 series, calling it the “new champion” and revealing that it is on the way. He recommended the Redmi K70 Ultra, which features the Dimensity 9300+, for those in urgent need of a new flagship phone from Redmi. Reports indicate that China will announce the Redmi K80 series by the end of this month (November).

The Redmi K70 series, released in November last year, included the K70e, K70, and K70 Pro, with prices starting at 1,999 Yuan (~$278). The Dimensity 8400, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powered the three phones, respectively. The K80 Pro remained exclusive to the Chinese market, whereas the K70e and K70 were rebranded as the Poco X6 Pro and the Poco F6 Pro, respectively, in the global market.

Last week, Thomas confirmed that the Redmi K80 series will not include a Redmi K80e model. The new lineup is expected to feature two models: the Redmi K80 and the K80 Pro. Both phones are expected to face competition from the iQOO Neo 10 and Neo 10 Pro, which are also expected to go official by November end. Reports have revealed that the Neo 10 will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, whereas the Neo 10 Pro will have the Dimensity 9400 onboard.

The Redmi K80 and K80 Pro are anticipated to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Elite chipsets, respectively. The Xiaomi executive has mentioned on multiple occasions that the Redmi K80 series will come with a price hike.

iQOO Neo 10 series official teaser arrives, will rival Redmi K80 series

Around ten days ago, iQOO announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite-powered iQOO 13 in China. The brand has now officially teased the Neo 10 series of sub-flagship phones. It is expected to rival the Redmi K80 and K80 Pro, which are rumored to launch by the end of November in China.

The iQOO Neo Product Manager, who released the above teaser, highlighted that over the last three years, the Neo series has consistently been at the forefront of innovation. With continuous support from users, the series has seen considerable success.

He stated that the next generation will exceed expectations by delivering enhanced dual-core performance. This suggests the possibility of dual flagship models, akin to the Neo 9 series, which featured both the Neo 9 and Neo 9 Pro.

Reports have revealed that the Neo-10 lineup will include the Neo10 and Neo 10 Pro. There have been mentions of a third model, but its details remain unclear. It is yet to be determined if this model will be named the iQOO Neo 10e when it hits the market. According to the reports, the Neo 10 series is expected to be unveiled by the end of November, positioning it as a competitor to the Redmi K80 and K80 Pro, which are anticipated to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 8 Elite chipsets, respectively.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9400 chipsets, respectively, will power the Neo 10 and Neo 10 Pro, according to reports. Both devices are expected to arrive with common specs, such as a 6.78-inch OLED 8T LTPO flat screen with a 1.5K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, a 16-megapixel front camera, a 6,000mAh to 6,500mAh battery with 120W fast charging, up to 16 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, up to 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage, and OriginOS 5-based Android 15.

The iQOO Neo 10 may feature a 50-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual-camera system and an optical in-screen fingerprint sensor. On the other hand, the iQOO Neo 10 Pro will have a 50-megapixel + 50-megapixel dual-camera system and an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra will have the same 3x telephoto as the predecessor

Xiaomi’s upcoming high-end flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, is set to launch in early 2025. The device will be home to a beefy camera module with flagship specs to go along with it.

For instance, the 15 Ultra will feature a 50-megapixel main sensor with a 23mm focal length and an f/1.6 aperture. It will also include two telephoto lenses, one of which reportedly uses a massive 200MP sensor with 4.3x optical zoom, a 100mm focal length, and an f/2.6 aperture.

Popular Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station now shared more details about the other telephoto sensor. Interestingly, this one isn’t a major upgrade; it retains the same Sony IMX858 sensor found in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, along with an f/1.8 aperture and 1/2.51” sensor size. However, the focal length has slightly decreased from 75mm to 70mm.

According to DCS, the phone’s dual telephoto camera will support telephoto macro mode and there will be a new camera kit to further improve the photography experience. Rounding out the camera setup will be a 50MP ultrawide sensor.

Rest of the spec

Apart from this, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra is rumored to feature a 6.7-inch, 120Hz LTPO OLED display with micro-curved edges. The display will also house an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor for convenient and secure unlocking.

The 15 Ultra is said to come in three material finishes — plain leather, fiberglass, or ceramic. The phone’s render has also surfaced online in a black leather option.

Under the hood, the phone will likely use the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset for powerful performance. It may also pack a 6,000mAh battery with support for 90W wired and 80W wireless charging. On the software side, it’s expected to run Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2.0, based on Android 15.

Red Magic 10 Pro series official images reveal amazing design with completely flat back, full-screen display with no punch-hole

Red Magic, Nubia’s gaming sub-brand, will launch the Red Magic 10 Pro series of smartphones on Nov. 13. Today, the brand shared the official images of the Red Magic 10 Pro series to showcase its design and color options for the first time. Like the predecessor Red Magic 9 Pro series, the upcoming lineup continues to sport a flat design without any camera protrusion on the back.

Red Magic 10 Pro series design revealed

The Red Magic 10 Pro series will be available in four shades, such as Dark Night, Day Warrior, Deuterium Transparent Dark Night, and Deuterium Transparent Silver Wing. With no camera punch-hole on the front, the Red Magic 10 Pro series promises an amazing full-screen appearance.

The Red Magic 10 Pro series has a completely flush camera module on the glass back. The Red Magic 10 Pro series maintains its triple camera setup, positioning the RGB-LED ring below the two large cameras. The “X” logo that represents the tenth edition of the Red Magic 10 series can also be on the back.

The right edge of the Red Magic 10 Pro series features gaming trigger buttons, a fan vent, a volume rocker, a power button, and a mode slider switch. The left side of the phone features another fan vent. The transparent variants have some transparent elements on the back, including the Snapdragon 8 Elite logo.

According to recent reports, the Red Magic 10 Pro series will feature a 6.86-inch OLED panel with a 1.5K resolution and 144Hz refresh rate. The Pro+ edition of the device is expected to arrive with a 7-inch+ screen, up to 24 GB of RAM, and up to 1 TB of storage. Under the hood, both phones will have the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip along with the company’s self-developed R3 gaming chip for an enhanced gaming experience. The Pro+ variant is also said to arrive with a 7,050mAh battery with 120W fast charging support.

OnePlus Ace 5 / Ace 5 Pro details leak: Redesigned camera module, ceramic body, 24GB RAM and more

After launching the OnePlus 13, OnePlus likely has turned its focus to new models in the Ace series, which are expected to be the OnePlus Ace 5 and Ace 5 Pro. According to a recent leak from Weibo tipster Smart Pikachu, these devices will feature a refreshed design compared to their predecessors.

The tipster’s post reveals that the Ace 5 series has an updated rear design. A similar rumor circulated about the OnePlus 13, and indeed, the company introduced a slight design change for its latest flagship. The phone’s camera island is no longer connected to the frame, but the circular camera island remains consistent with previous models.

Since the OnePlus Ace series has followed the design trend of the main OnePlus lineup for at least of couple of years now, we can reasonably expect the Ace 5 series to adopt a design similar to the OnePlus 13.

Smart Pikachu adds that the new phone includes a large battery within a ceramic body. It also retains the classic alert slider, and the top-tier version will come with 24GB of RAM.

OnePlus Ace 5 series specification

The OnePlus Ace 5 will come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, while the higher-end Ace 5 Pro may pack an even more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite chip.

Reports also suggest that the Ace 5 will feature a 1.5K resolution OLED flat display from BOE, marking a shift from the Ace 3’s curved screen design. It will support 100W wired fast charging, though it won’t include wireless charging. The Ace 5 Pro may adopt BOE’s X2 flat screen, also with a 1.5K resolution.

OnePlus 13
OnePlus 13

Notably, the Ace 5 Pro’s camera system is expected to see major upgrades, featuring a Sony IMX906 main camera and an ISOCELL JN1 telephoto sensor, potentially using image processing technology similar to that in the Find X8 series. Both the IMX906 and JN1 are 50-megapixel sensors.

Although the Ace 3 Pro launched at CNY 3,199, the starting price of the Ace 5 Pro may rise due to an earlier release schedule and the higher cost of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip.

Xiaomi air conditioners surge to third place in China: Can Gree maintain its lead?

Xiaomi‘s air conditioners are blowing hot and cold (pun intended) in China’s online market, rapidly gaining ground on long-time leader Gree. According to AVC data, Xiaomi currently holds the third-largest market share at 11.82%, a significant 4.31% year-over-year increase. This growth spurt puts them right behind Gree’s 24.04% share, which has seen a concerning 3.01% decline in the same period.

Xiaomi Air Conditioner

Xiaomi climbs to third in China’s online AC market

Midea remains the undisputed champion with a 25.01% share, but even they haven’t escaped the shifting market dynamics. Their average price point has dipped by 2.32%, reflecting a trend towards more budget-friendly options.

This is where Xiaomi thrives. Their air conditioners boast an average price of 2,281 yuan ($318), making them a compelling choice for value-conscious consumers. This strategy seems to be paying off, with a JD.com delivery agent claiming earlier this year that Xiaomi deliveries have jumped from 20% to a staggering 70% compared to last year.

Meanwhile, Gree seems to be feeling the heat. Their recent financial report revealed a worrying 15.84% drop in revenue for the third quarter, totaling 46.939 billion yuan ($6.57 billion). This has prompted CEO Dong Mingzhu to take a rather bold marketing approach.

In a recent statement, she declared, “Only a fool wouldn’t use Gree air conditioners, which can save you 20%-30% on electricity costs each year.”

Since entering the market in 2021, Xiaomi’s shipments have surged, with 4.4 million units sold in 2023 and a 63% growth in early 2024, projecting over 7 million units by year-end. Analysts expect Xiaomi’s air conditioners to outpace even its own TV sales by 2026, marking a strategic shift in Xiaomi’s IoT revenue focus.

So, the question on everyone’s mind is: with Xiaomi’s ACs offering a compelling combination of affordability and features, will consumers choose the innovative upstart or stick with the established, if slightly flustered, Gree? Only time will tell who will reign supreme in China’s air conditioning battleground.

In related news, Xiaomi launched the Mijia Fresh Air Pro air conditioner last month, a 1.5 HP wall-mounted unit featuring 30-second rapid cooling, heating down to -35°C, HyperOS smart integration, AI-driven performance enhancements, and a starting price of 3,599 Yuan ($506).
