Intel’s next-generation desktop CPUs are reportedly a lot more power-efficient

Intel is working on its 15th-generation Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake CPUs. While the Lunar Lake CPUs are said to be focused on power efficiency to compete with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chips and will be used inside thin and lite laptops, the Arrow Lake CPUs are going to be optimized for performance and will mainly power Desktop computers.

Intel’s Arrow Lake desktop platform is expected to use both Intel’s 20A (or 2nm) process and TSMC’s 3nm process. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger confirmed that Intel will use TSMC’s 3nm process for Arrow Lake’s GPU tiles, which are said to be upgraded to the Xe2 LPG architecture.

Judging from the current signs, Arrow Lake will also adopt a modular architecture, divided into four different Tile modules: CPU, SoC, GPU, and IOE. The CPU is expected to use Intel’s own 20A process.

The latest news comes from a statement from an internal communication meeting, where it has been revealed that Arrow Lake’s power consumption will be at least 100W lower while running at a relatively high frequency as compared to the 14th-generation CPUs. For context, the Arrow Lake CPUs were previously reported to feature a lower clock speed as compared to the i9 14900KS.

Thanks to the new 20A process, it no longer requires the previous high voltage to maintain stability. If true, it should solve the problems of the 13th and 14th generation CPUs that are related to high voltage and power consumption.

While the leak hints at an impressive performance, no detailed information is available about it yet and to be precise, it sounds too good to be true.

Although Intel hasn’t officially announced a release date for Arrow Lake, industry insiders predict a launch sometime in the second half of 2024. According to a previous report, Intel could launch Arrow Lake in October with the first batch of K series CPUs, which may include the high-end Core Ultra 9 285K. The company is expected to release more Arrow Lake products at CES in early 2025.

Samsung recalls over 1 million electric ovens in US due to fire risk

Samsung Electronics America is recalling 1.12 million electric ovens sold in the United States between 2013 and 2024 due to reports of hundreds of fires. These incidents have resulted in injuries and the deaths of pets.

Faulty Knobs Spark Massive Samsung Oven Recall

The issue lies with the faulty front knobs, which can be easily turned on accidentally by people or pets, creating a serious fire hazard.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the faulty knobs have been linked to approximately 250 fire incidents, with at least 18 causing significant property damage. These fires have also resulted in injuries to around 40 people, with 8 requiring medical attention.

Tragically, there have also been reports of 7 pet deaths associated with these fires. The agency has pinpointed the front knobs on these Samsung ovens as the primary issue, noting that they are particularly sensitive and can be accidentally activated by even slight contact. This can occur when objects are placed near the knobs or when pets or small children brush against them. With the oven unknowingly turned on, the risk of fire greatly increases.

Samsung has acknowledged the problem and is taking steps to rectify it. The company is offering free knob locks and covers to prevent accidental activation. For owners of Wi-Fi-enabled ovens, Samsung has also introduced a notification feature through its SmartThings app to alert users when the oven is turned on.

Here’s the list of the affected models:

Afftected Samsung Range Models

Consumers are urged to check if their Samsung oven is part of the recall and to take immediate action to prevent accidents.

While waiting for your free knob locks or covers, the CPSC advises exercising caution. Keep children and pets away from the oven knobs, and always double-check that your oven is turned off before leaving the house or going to bed. Additionally, as a general safety precaution, avoid leaving anything flammable on the stovetop when the oven is not in use.

Realme’s 300W charging tech leaks in video, 0-17% in 35 seconds

Realme is set to unveil its latest innovation in wired charging on August 14th at an event in China. There the company will demo its 300W fast charging tech, rumors of which we’ve been hearing about for some time now.

Although the official reveal is still a few days away, a video has already surfaced online showing the charging tech in action.

In the video, we can see the phone going from 0% to 15% in just 32 seconds. The fuel level increases by 3% in the next 3 seconds to reach 17%. The video ends there without revealing the battery capacity of the phone used in the testing. But this small demo is enough for us to show the upcoming charging tech potential.

Realme, however, isn’t the first brand to achieve such ridiculously fast charging speed. That title goes to Redmi, Xiaomi’s sub-brand, which demoed their 300W solution last year. It charged a Redmi Note 12 with a 4100mAh battery from 0% to 100% in mere 5 minutes.

However, that tech didn’t make it to any consumer-level device yet.

The hope, of course, is that Realme will be the first to bring 300W charging to commercially available smartphones.

Compared to Redmi, Realme may even be better positioned to do so. Their existing lineup has phones with 240W charging support, making the jump to 300W a smaller leap. In contrast, Redmi’s current flagship tops out at 120W.

Realme 300W charging leak

While some might question the need for such rapid charging, I’ve personally experienced Realme’s 240W fast charging on the GT Neo 5, and the convenience of having the phone charged in minutes was undeniable.

Additionally, the leak suggests that Realme might even unveil a charging solution faster than 300W to outpace Redmi and secure the title of the world’s fastest charging technology. As the official reveal is just a few days away, we’ll soon have all the details.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 review – Is this the best foldable phone available now?

Outside of China, Samsung faces limited competition in the foldable market. In the Chinese market, several horizontally foldable devices have been launched this year, such as the Vivo X Fold 3, X Fold 3 Pro, Xiaomi Mix Fold 4, Honour Magic V3, and Magic Vs 3. Among these, only the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, is available in India with a price tag of Rs 1,59,999. Last year, OnePlus launched the OnePlus Open with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in India. However, it seems that its successor will not be launching this year. Another brand, Tecno, is expected to launch the Tecno Phantom V2 Fold 5G in India in the coming months.

With limited direct competition in the Indian market, Samsung’s latest foldable stands as one of the most compelling options for consumers seeking an innovative and versatile device. Here is a look at what the Galaxy Z Fold 6 has to offer and whether it lives up to expectations.

Buy Galaxy Fold 6

1. Design and Build

Galaxy Z Fold 6 (right edge)

The Galaxy Z Fold 6’s retail package has a few usual documents, a SIM ejector pin, a USB-C to USB-C cable, and the Z Fold 6 handset. In terms of design, it is noticeably slimmer and lighter than the Z Fold 5, offering a more comfortable in-hand feel. The device weighs 239 grams, which is the same as the OnePlus Open. It is 14 grams lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. In the folded and unfolded states, the Z Fold 6 measures 12.1mm and 5.6mm, respectively.

The cover and internal screens measure the same as the Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, the front display now offers a better aspect ratio. The internal display crease is mostly unnoticeable unless you really try to look for it. Like the Z Fold 5, there is no gap between the two halves when the device is folded.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 promises better durability as it an IP48-rated chassis, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for both displays, and an armour aluminium frame. Overall, the device feels premium and its Silver Shadow variant, which can be seen in the images, exudes a sleek and sophisticated aesthetic that enhances its luxurious appeal. It comes in other options, such as Navy and Pink. Buyers can avail Black and White color variants through the Samsung website.

2. Display and Audio

The internal 7.6-inch foldable AMOLED screen supports LTPO technology and offers a variable 120Hz refresh rate. There’s only a slight improvement in the screen resolution and aspect ratio as compared to the Z Fold 5.

The Z Fold 5 features a 6.2-inch cover screen with a 23:1.9 aspect ratio. On the other hand, the Z Fold 6 has a bigger 6.3-inch cover display with a usable 22:1.9 aspect ratio. Both displays offer up to 2,600 nits of peak brightness. When it comes to streaming content, the Z Fold 6 supports HDR and HDR10+. However, there is no support for Dolby Vision.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has stereo speakers on the cover screen half, with sound directed through frame slits; the top speaker also serves as an earpiece. The sound output is good and enjoyable for watching your favorite content.

3. Performance and Software

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, rather than its standard version found on non-Samsung flagship phones. For most users, this upgrade will not significantly impact everyday performance. The device also features LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 packs a 4,400mAh battery that supports only 25W charging, taking around 1 hour and 20 minutes for a full charge. I believe this is an area of concern, and there should be some sort of improvement in the fast charging department, not just on the Z Fold 6, but across all Samsung flagships. The phone also supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. Despite having two displays and a smaller battery compared to traditional smartphones, the Z Fold 6 performs well in the battery life department. After using the device for a month, I rarely needed to charge it more than once a day.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is promised to receive seven years of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. It comes preloaded with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1, which brings the latest version of Galaxy AI. The next slide will cover more about Galaxy The Z Fold 6 enables users to multitask by displaying three apps on a single screen, which they can resize, as illustrated in the images above.

4. Galaxy AI

The Galaxy AI features consist of the following:

  1. Call Assist: Automatically transcribes and provides summaries of phone calls, making it easier to keep track of important conversations. This can be done using the “Live Translate” option while on a call. I did a test call wherein I spoke in English and my mom responded in Hindi. While the features are good, they aren’t very accurate all the time.
  2. Chat Assist: Provides intelligent suggestions and auto-completion for messages, making texting faster and more efficient. The Galaxy AI icon that shows just above the on-screen keyboard can be used to access features, such as chat translation, composer, writing style, and spelling and grammar.
  3. Interpreter: Real-time translation for conversations in different languages, helping users communicate seamlessly. The other person can use the cover screen to view the translated text when using the Interpreter app.
  4. Note Assist: Automatically organizes notes and highlights key points, making it easier to review and find important information. This is available through the Notes app, wherein you get options like Auto format, Summaries, Correct Spelling, Translate, and Sketch to Image (if you have used the Notes app to draw something).
  5. Transcript Assist: Converts voice recordings into text, allowing for simple documentation and reference. When you record a voice using the voice record, you can tap the Transcribe button to generate the text version of the recording. You can access the Summary and Translate options t
  6. Browsing Assist: It works on Samsung’s built-in web browser, and it offers two features, such as Summarise and Translate.
  7. Photo Assist: Uses generative AI to provide users with features to move, remove, and resize people and objects, and then uses AI to fill up empty areas. The Portrait Studio can also be used to transform pictures of people using a wide range of artistic styles.
  8. Drawing Assist: It can turn drawings into images in the Samsung Notes app, Photo Editor, and the sidebar.
  9. Photo Ambient Wallpaper: This feature available in the Wallpaper and Style section of Settings allows users to create dynamic wallpapers using AI to change a photo based on the time and weather.
  10. Health Assist: Tracks health metrics and provides personalized insights and recommendations, integrating seamlessly with Samsung Health.

Camera and Other Features

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a 10-megapixel Sony IMX374 camera on the cover and a 4-megapixel Sony IMX471 under-screen camera on the internal display. The rear camera setup has a 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN3 main camera with an f/1.57 aperture, dual pixel autofocus, and OIS. It is accompanied by a 12-megapixel ISOCELL 3LU ultrawide lens and a 10-megapixel ISOCELL 3K1 telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS support.

The rear cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 can be used for high-quality selfies by utilizing the cover screen as a viewfinder. In daylight and well-lit environments, the device captures photos with excellent dynamic range. The main sensor supports up to 3x in-sensor zoom. Portrait shots taken with the telephoto camera feature impressive background blur, while zoomed images retain good detail. The ultrawide camera provides consistent color quality in line with the other rear cameras and performs adequately. As you can see, I have used the Z Fold 6 to capture some good product shots for my work.

The primary camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 performs well in low-light conditions, capturing excellent detail and managing noise effectively, aided by software enhancements. While the dynamic range may not match the level seen in well-lit environments, the overall image quality remains solid, with occasional softness in tones. The telephoto and ultrawide cameras also deliver decent results in low light, though they may show a bit more noise and slightly reduced detail compared to the primary sensor.

When it comes to video shooting, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 can record 4K 60fps using all three rear-facing cameras. Even the front camera supports it. The Fold’s 4K video quality is solid, with vibrant colors and good dynamic range. However, detail is somewhat lacking, especially at 30fps. Stabilization is excellent, delivering smooth results. In low light, the main camera performs well, while the ultrawide and telephoto cameras are better suited to brighter conditions.

The Z Fold 6 supports the S Pen, which users need to purchase separately. Unfortunately, I couldn’t try it on the device because it wasn’t bundled with the review unit. In terms of security, the device offers a side-facing fingerprint scanner, face unlock, and Knox security.

5. Verdict

One of the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s major advantages is its limited competition in the foldable smartphone market. It goes without saying that it is one of the best foldable phones available right now. Its premium and durable build, excellent displays, powerful speakers, and reliable cameras make it a strong contender for anyone considering a foldable device. The top-notch software, enhanced by a range of AI features, further adds to its appeal.

However, looking ahead, there are areas where Samsung could enhance future foldables. Incorporating a more versatile camera setup, such as a periscope telephoto lens, could significantly boost its photographic capabilities. Additionally, faster charging would be a valuable improvement, addressing a common concern for users of high-end smartphones.

Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 stands out as a solid choice in the foldable market, but future iterations could benefit from these upgrades to maintain its competitive edge.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE leak reveals display, camera, processor and battery details

After appearing on the support page, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE has now been leaked extensively, revealing its official design and specs.

The phone’s design doesn’t introduce much that’s new; it closely resembles other Galaxy S24 series phones. However, Samsung is equipping this generation of the FE smartphone with a larger display compared to its predecessor.

According to the leak, the Galaxy S24 FE will feature a 6.7-inch display, up from the 6.4-inch screen on the Galaxy S23 FE. The brightness also sees an increase from 1450 nits to 1900 nits, while the refresh rate remains at 120Hz.

With a larger display, it’s natural for the phone’s dimensions to change. However, Samsung hasn’t made significant improvements to the battery despite making the S24 FE bigger. It will have a 4565mAh battery, only a slight increase from the 4500mAh battery of its predecessor.

Battery life is estimated at 29 hours of video playback and 78 hours of audio. However, real-world usage will ultimately determine the device’s endurance.

Interestingly, the leak also reveals that the phone will be powered by an Exynos 2400e chipset, a variant of the flagship chip. As a 2024 device, it will naturally include AI features. The S24 FE is likely to offer features like Portrait Studio, Circle to Search, and Generative Edit.

The camera setup appears to be a familiar combination of a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and an 8MP telephoto unit with 3x optical zoom. While Samsung has shown improvements in camera processing as of late, the S24 FE’s photographic capabilities will be a crucial factor in determining its overall value proposition.

There’s no information on the price of the Galaxy S24 FE yet. The S23 FE is priced at $599, so a price increase for the S24 FE is likely, considering its larger display and new chipset.

Motorola Edge 20 Fusion finally gets Android 13 update

Motorola has finally released the Android 13 update for its Edge 20 Fusion smartphone, a move that arrives significantly later than many competitors. The update, weighing in at 1.64GB, brings features like app customization, a revamped media player, and granular notification controls.

Motorola Edge 20 Fusion

Motorola Android 13 update: What’s new

After upgrading, you’ll notice several improvements to the Android operating system and apps. Personalization options have expanded, allowing you to customize your phone further. You can now style app icons to match your wallpaper, accessible by touching and holding a blank space on your home screen and selecting “Personalize.”

The Moto Widget on your home screen has been updated, with the new expandable Adapt version allowing you to add and view more information. To revert to the old version or choose a different one, drag the current widget to the top of the screen and drop it on “Remove.” Then, touch and hold the home screen, go to “Widgets,” select “Moto Widget,” and drag the version you want to your home screen.

Settings changes include the ability to set supported apps to use a language different from your phone’s default. You also have more control over notifications and privacy, with options to adjust notification permissions and limit photo and video sharing on a per-app basis.

The Gestures menu has moved to Settings > Gestures, from its previous location under Settings > System > Gestures, allowing you to turn gestures on or off easily. These updates provide enhanced control and customization options.

While this update is welcome news for Edge 20 Fusion users, it highlights Motorola’s slow pace of software updates. Other manufacturers are already testing Android 15 betas, making Motorola’s approach appear sluggish. All that said, this update is likely the last the Edge 20 Fusion will receive since it launched back in 2021 with Android 11 onboard.
