Meta applies for a patent that allegedly replicates Apple Vision Pro’s EyeSight feature

Apple launched its premium VR headset, the Apple Vision Pro, in February this year. One of the notable features of Apple’s VR headset is called EyeSight, where a display mimics the wearer’s eyes to make the user’s interaction with the real seem more natural. According to Apple “EyeSight reveals your eyes on the front of your Apple Vision Pro, and lets those nearby know when you’re using apps or are fully immersed in an experience.”

Meta is expected to replicate Apple’s EyeSight feature for its future VR headsets

Now the news is that Meta has applied for a patent that is somewhat similar to Apple’s EyeSight feature. You can see the patent illustration below. Reportedly, Meta aims to replicate the EyeSight feature which is far from being perfect on its own.

Image: Patently Apple

Meta‘s patent abstract notes that it is a method for updating a subject avatar with a facial expression collected in real-time. The method includes receiving, from a sensor on the facial interface of a headset, a signal indicative of a movement in a facial muscle from a user of the headset. The process involves determining the facial expression of the user with the signal from the sensor in the facial interface of the headset, based on a machine learning algorithm trained to associate the facial expression with the movement of the facial muscle.

Then it adjusts a subject avatar for the user of the headset based on the facial expression and provides the subject avatar to an immersive reality application hosted by a remote server.

The headset will reportedly include various sensors such as ECG, EEG, and PPG sensors to assess the cardiovascular conditions of a user.

One of the limitations of VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3 or the Apple Vision Pro is that the wearer becomes disconnected (sort of) from the real world. According to Apple, they developed EyeSight to maintain the connection of the wearers with the real world.

While it’s common for companies to take inspiration from the developments and achievements of their competitors, the jaw-dropping aspect of the whole development is that it emerged only a couple of months after Zuckerburg himself claimed that its Quest headset stands tall against the Vision Pro in a variety of aspects.

Leaked Render Reveals Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL In Pink And Porcelain Colors

Google is gearing up to unveil the next-generation Pixel smartphones and smartwatch on August 13 which is quite earlier than its traditional launch timeline. Leaks and rumors have been gathering pace about the search giant’s upcoming hardware offerings. Now, a new clear render of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL shared by tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore gives us a look at both devices in two shades.

Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro XL new leaked render

The Pixel 9 was spotted in a leaked live image earlier this month revealing the device in a Pink color. The latest render gives us a much better look in the same shade. The shade on the horizontal camera island is slightly different from the rest of the back panel. The Pink color option on the Pixel 9 is a welcome move from the mainstream Black, Blue, and Green found on most smartphones today.

Meanwhile, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is seen in Porcelain color which is not any different from the last year’s Pixel 8 Pro. We could spot a periscope lens housed inside the pill-shaped island. There is also a temperature sensor placed beneath the LED flash unit.

The key design difference between last year’s Pixel 8 series and the upcoming Pixel 9 lineup is that the latter is set to feature a boxy design with a flat frame as per leaked renders. The horizontal camera bridge has been trimmed from the sides. Apart from this, the Pixel 9 series is rumoured to be powered by a Tensor G4 chipset and up to 16GB RAM.

Leaked prices suggest that the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro may start at EUR 899 and EUR 1,099 for the base 128GB model respectively. The Pixel 9 Pro XL is tipped to carry a starting price tag of EUR 1,199 for the same base variant as its other siblings.

Nio Phone 2 with AI features officially launching July 27

Nio’s Vice President Bai Jian has officially announced the launch of its highly anticipated second-generation smartphone, the Nio Phone 2, on July 27th at the Nio Innovation and Technology Day. The new phone promises significant upgrades, including integration with large AI models, enhanced system fluidity, and deeper connectivity with Nio’s electric vehicle ecosystem.

Nio Phone
Nio Phone

The Nio Phone 2 aims to provide a seamless and convenient driving experience by allowing users to control various car functions directly from their phones, such as unlocking/locking, starting the vehicle, adjusting settings, and accessing the car’s infotainment system. The phone’s integration with AI will further enhance its capabilities, enabling smarter interactions and potentially more advanced applications in the future.

Under the hood, the Nio Phone 2 is rumored to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which will significantly boost the phone’s AI and computational capabilities. There’s also a possibility that the phone will feature the overclocked version of the Snapdragon Gen 3. This will not only improve the overall performance but also enable the phone to support more demanding applications and features.

The phone was spotted on China’s 3C certification platform recently. The device is expected to feature a 5000mAh battery and a 100W charger. The exact fast charging capability remains uncertain at this point.

Nio’s venture into the smartphone market is seen as a defensive strategy in response to Huawei and Xiaomi’s entry into the electric car market. By creating a phone that deeply integrates with its vehicles, Nio aims to provide a unique and superior user experience for its customers, setting it apart from its competitors.

Looking back at Nio’s smartphone journey, the company launched its first phone, the Nio Phone, in September 2023. How does Xiaomi Mix Flip compare to Galaxy Z Flip 6 & Razr 50 series?

A recent report revealed that Xiaomi is planning on releasing the Mix Flip foldable phone in Southeast Asia and Europe. Considering how we’ve already compared flip phones like the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, let’s see how well the Xiaomi Mix Flip takes both of these devices.

1. Display

Xiaomi Mix Flip

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 disappointed with its 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover display, but its primary screen was a more respectable 6.7-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X panel. Meanwhile, both the Razr 50 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mix Flip offer taller primary and external displays.

Xiaomi offers a 4.01-inch panel, while the internal panel has a 6.86-inch display. On the other hand, the Razr 50 Ultra sports a 6.9-inch primary screen and a 4-inch secondary display. So while all three models are quite comparable in the display department, Xiaomi and Motorola’s cover displays have a clear edge.

2. Flagship Chips

Xiaomi’s Mix Flip is a flagship grade foldable phone that is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. This is Qualcomm’s top end mobile processor that powers various ultra premium phones. Samsung also equips the same processor on its Galaxy Z Flip 6. In other words, the two devices have comparable performance. But this is where Motorola falls behind slightly. The Razr 50 Ultra is equipped with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which is often seen in flagship killer/affordable flagship phones.

3. Camera

Both Xiaomi and Motorola again offer near-identical camera setup. The Razr 50 Ultra and the Mix Flip sport a 50-megapixel primary camera along with a 50-megapixel telephoto shooter on the rear, and a 32-megapixel selfie sensor on the front. Samsung did upgrade the rear camera on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 with a 50-megapixel main camera, but this is paired with a 12-megapixel ultra wide angle lens. Meanwhile, the front houses a 10-megapixel selfie shooter.

4. Battery Pack & Charging

Motorola Razr 50 Ultra

Flip phones aren’t known to pack a big battery and this is one area where they are often lackluster. However, Xiaomi’s new Mix Flip has a robust 4,780mAh battery pack that supports 67W wired fast charging. This is noticeably larger than the 4,000mAh cell that powers both the Razr 50 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Motorola brings a 45W wired fast charging, compared to the 25W on the Z Flip 6. Although, the Samsung phone has support for wireless charging as well.

5. Pricing

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the most expensive foldable phone out of these three devices with a starting price tag of 1,099 US Dollars. At the same time, the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra starts from 999 US Dollars, and the Xiaomi Mix Flip will reportedly cost 100 US Dollars less than the Galaxy Z Flip 6. This means that we can expect it to be around the 900 to 1000 US Dollar price range. With the Galaxy Z Flip 6 being its main rival, it offers competitive specs and a slightly more affordable price tag. If it does release in the global market like Europe and other Asian countries, then this could be a worthy flip phone to look out for.

Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim to have same aspect ratio as the S24 Ultra

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim might share the same screen aspect ratio as the S24 Ultra. There are plenty of foldable devices on the market, each with its own unique form factor. While users can pick the device that best fits their needs, foldable devices are generally harder to use compared to regular smartphones.

Galaxy Z Fold 6, introduced this year, features a 22:9 screen aspect ratio, which is quite different from Samsung’s previous foldables. The Z Fold 6’s outer display is narrower and taller, making it actually harder to reach the top of the screen with one hand due to the taller screen.

According to a recent report by ITHome, Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim might have the same screen aspect ratio as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This is great news, as many foldables come with different form factors than the regular phones. Having an outer display similar to a regular smartphone is a big plus. If Samsung can achieve a truly compact body with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim, Samsung fans might prefer buying foldable models even more.
