Tecno Camon 30 series India launch teased! Sony camera, leather back, & more

Tecno first unveiled the Camon 30 series of smartphones earlier this year. During the MWC 2024 (Mobile World Congress) event, the Camon 30, Camon 30 5G, Camon 30 Premier 5G, and Camon 30 Pro 5G were launched for the global market. Now, the company finally teased the Indian release. So here’s what we know so far.

Tecno Camon 30 Series Teaser

Tecno Camon 30 Premier 5G
Tecno Camon 30 Premier 5G

Back in March, the Tecno Camon 30 5G and Camon 30 Premier 5G were spotted in the BIS certification platform in India. But an official teaser has just been shared by the brand on X (formerly Twitter). A short video teaser was shared that teases the upcoming device photography prowess. The higher-end Premier and Pro models feature Sony sensors, which was showcased in the teaser.

Apart from that, we also get a look at the rear of either the Camon 30 Premier or Camon 30 Pro with the vegan leather back panel. In other words, there likely is no difference between the global and Indian versions of these smartphones. So we can expect the specs and features to also be the same.

Unfortunately, Tecno did not reveal any other key details like the release date for the Camon 30 series or its pricing. There’s a chance that these devices may debut later this month, but this is still speculation at the moment. So stick around for more as we will be providing updates when more information is available.

OpenAI is now developing an alternative to Google Search, and is hiring Googlers for that

With the emergence of ChatGPT, Google felt the need to develop a similar large language model. It eventually created Gemini. However, OpenAI also seems to be inspired by a product of Google, the Google Search. The latest news is that ChatGPT maker OpenAI is now hiring Googlers to develop a search feature for ChatGPT and compete with Google Search.

FILE PHOTO: OpenAI and ChatGPT logos are seen in this illustration taken, February 3, 2023. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo

ChatGPT already has access to the web

OpenAI gave ChatGPT access to the internet around one year ago. However, it is limited to paid subscribers who can access real-time information from the web through the chatbot. Otherwise, the ChatGPT integrated version of Microsoft’s Bing web browser can also assist you with information from the web, however, the implementation comes with its own characteristics and limitations and is not quite the same as ChatGPT.

According to Bloomberg, now the company is aiming to take it further with a search feature for ChatGPT which will search the web and present you the latest information with proper citations. OpenAI is actively hiring Google engineers from the search team, however, the exact number of employees that the company has hired is not known yet.

Building an alternative to Google Search is definitely not going to be an easy task. However, it’s also true that the start-up is kind of established at this point with a significantly large user base. OpenAI is also associated with Microsoft which may help with the compute.

Google is aware of the potential challenges and is reportedly taking steps to make its search product more agile and adapt to the changing market. Google’s addition of a generative AI feature to search (the Search Generative Experience) is an example of that. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how Search evolves and becomes more helpful as part of the competition between big giants.

iQOO Z9x: What to expect from this Redmi Note 13 rival?

iQOO is gearing up to launch the Z9x in India on May 16th, and leaks and teasers have painted a clear picture of what to expect from this mid-range contender. Here’s a breakdown of the features we expect to see on the upcoming smartphone.

1. Performance

The heart of the iQOO Z9x will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor. It’s a mid-range chipset that should deliver smooth performance for everyday tasks, light gaming, and multitasking. In fact, iQOO says the Z9x is the “fastest phone in the segment” and scores over 560,000 points on the AnTuTu benchmark.

On the software front, the phone will come pre-installed with the latest Android 14 with iQOO’s custom FunTouch OS 14 on top. The company has also confirmed 2 years of Android updates and 3 years of security updates for the phone.

The base variant of the iQOO Z9x is expected to offer 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. This should be sufficient for most users, but there might be additional storage options available. The storage is also expandable for up to 1TB via a microSD card, a convenience for users.

2. Display and Design

The iQOO Z9x will boast a large 6.72-inch Full HD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Although it’s not LTPO tech, the refresh rate will have 7 adaptive levels to help preserve some battery. Additionally, it has a peak brightness of 1000 nits, ensuring comfortable viewing even in bright outdoor conditions.

iQOO has shown off the phone’s design, which features a sleek look with flat edges and a punch-hole camera in the front. On the back, there’s a dual-camera system. You’ll have two color choices: Tornado Green or Strom Grey.

The iQOO Z9x will be the first phone in its class to be dust and water-resistant, with an IP64 rating. That means it can take on splashes and dusty environments without a problem.

3. Camera

iQOO Z9x

The camera department of the iQOO Z9x might cater to casual users rather than photography enthusiasts. It will have a dual rear camera setup with a 50MP main sensor and likely a 2MP depth sensor.

While the megapixel count of the main sensor sounds impressive, the true quality will depend on factors like sensor size, aperture, and software optimization. An 8MP front-facing camera is expected to handle video calls and selfies.

4. Battery and Others

One of the highlights of the iQOO Z9x will be its massive 6000mAh battery packed into a slim design. The company is claiming it as India’s slimmest phone with a 6000mAh battery.

It can reportedly provide 7.5 hours of gaming, 21.26 hours of videos, or up to 71.5 hours of music listening time. Plus, with 44W charging support, it can juice up for 10 hours of binge-watching in just 30 minutes, as claimed by iQOO.

Other expected features of the phone include an in-display fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack (a welcome addition for audiophiles), and stereo speakers for an immersive multimedia experience.

5. A promising mid-ranger?

Based on the features revealed so far, the iQOO Z9x appears to be a compelling mid-range option for users seeking a balance between performance, battery life, and affordability.

With the official launch just around the corner, it will be interesting to see how the iQOO Z9x stacks up against the competition and whether it meets our expectations.

Motorola Razr 50 Ultra Expected Features: Can It Compete in the 2024 Foldable Market?

The Motorola Razr series has carved a niche for itself in the smartphone market, offering a unique foldable design that evokes nostalgia for the classic Razr phones. With the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra launched last year, its successor, the Razr 50 Ultra, is on the horizon. Leaks and certifications have painted a preliminary picture of what to expect from this upcoming foldable phone. Let’s delve into the details and explore the potential features of the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra.

Motorola-Razr-40-Ultra
Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

1. Design and Build

Based on leaked images, the Razr 50 Ultra is expected to retain the familiar clamshell design of its predecessor. The phone will likely sport a large foldable display on the inside and a secondary display on the outer shell. While the overall design might not see a drastic change, there could be refinements in terms of hinge and bezels. A reduction in the number of components in the hinge is expected, potentially leading to a smoother folding experience and a more compact design when closed. Additionally, slimmer bezels around the main display could enhance the viewing experience. As per leaks, the device is expected to come in Blue, Orange, and Green colors.

2. Display

The Razr 50 Ultra is likely to inherit the large foldable display from the Razr 40 Ultra. This translates to a possibly 6.9-inch primary display with foldable LTPO pOLED technology. This technology offers a balance between refresh rate and power efficiency, allowing for smooth visuals and potentially longer battery life. The refresh rate might remain similar to the Razr 40 Ultra, offering a range between 1Hz and 165Hz for an adaptive experience.

The secondary display on the outer shell is also expected to be similar in size to the Razr 40 Ultra, which boasted a 3.6-inch display. This display allows for quick access to notifications, music controls, and other functionalities without unfolding the phone. Software improvements might be implemented to enhance the usability of the secondary display for multitasking.

3. Performance and Storage

As a flagship foldable, the Razr 50 Ultra is expected to pack a powerful processor. While details are yet to be confirmed, leaks suggest the phone might be equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or 8s Gen 3 processor. This would offer significant performance improvements over the Razr 40 Ultra’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Upgraded RAM options are also a possibility, with rumors pointing towards a base variant with 12GB of RAM and potentially higher options available. Storage capacity is also expected to see a bump, with a base variant offering 512GB of storage. This would be a welcome improvement for users who require ample space for apps, photos, and videos.

4. Camera

The camera setup of the Razr 50 Ultra remains shrouded in mystery. The Razr 40 Ultra featured a dual-camera system on the rear with a 12MP main sensor and a 13MP ultrawide sensor. The Razr 50 Ultra might see an upgrade in the camera department, potentially featuring a higher megapixel count for the main sensor or the addition of a telephoto lens for improved zoom capabilities. The front-facing camera for selfies might also see an improvement in resolution.

5. Battery and Charging

The battery capacity of the Razr 50 Ultra is yet to be revealed. However, considering the power demands of a large foldable display and a powerful processor, a battery capacity similar to or slightly larger than the Razr 40 Ultra’s 3800mAh battery is a possibility. Fast charging capabilities are likely to be retained, with support for at least 30W wired charging. Wireless charging might also be present, although the charging speed remains to be seen.

6. Software

The Razr 50 Ultra is expected to launch with the latest iteration of Android, likely Android 14. Motorola may add its own custom user interface on top, potentially offering optimizations for the foldable form factor and better integration with the secondary display.

7. Price and Availability

Leaks suggest that the Razr 50 Ultra might be priced similarly to its predecessor in the Eurozone, which was €1200 (approximately $1,292). However, the US pricing is likely to be lower. Considering the rumored bump in storage capacity from 256GB to 512GB for the base variant, the Razr 50 Ultra could offer better value for money. The phone is expected to launch sometime in the coming months, possibly around June or July 2024.

8. Conclusion

The Motorola Razr 50 Ultra appears to be shaping up as a worthy successor to the Razr 40 Ultra. While the design might not see a radical overhaul, potential upgrades in performance, storage, and camera capabilities are exciting prospects. The phone is likely to cater to users who value the unique foldable form factor and a powerful flagship experience. However, some points to consider include the price tag, which is likely to remain on the premium end, and the battery life, which might not see a significant improvement due to the limitations of foldable technology.

Sony Xperia 1 VI camera sensors revealed thanks to a new leak

Sony has confirmed the launch date of the Xperia 1 VI to be May 15, which is just days away. Although the announcement isn’t official yet, a lot of the key specifications including some camera information have already been revealed, thanks to leaked promotional images.

The Xperia 1 VI to equip LYTIA sensors in all three cameras

Now the latest leak from HT Felix reveals all the camera sensors of the Xperia 1 VI. Surprisingly, the Xperia 1 VI and Xperia 10 VI are said to equip the same camera sensors, but for different uses. For the Xperia 1 VI, the sensors and their uses are as follows:

Ultra-wide (16mm): 50MP Sony LYT600 (1/2″ optical format)
Main (24mm): 48MP Sony LYT800 (1/1.4″)
Telephoto (85-170mm): 50MP LYT500 (1/2.9″)

For those unfamiliar, the 50MP ultra-wide and telephoto are significant upgrades from the predecessor’s 12MP sensors.

In comparison, the Xperia 10 VI will reportedly feature the LYT600 and LYT500 in its main and ultrawide cameras respectively. In addition, the Zeiss T* coating is likely to remain exclusive to the Xperia 1 VI. The previous leaked promotional images reveal that the 1 VI will feature an “Exmor T for mobile” image sensor, which could be based on the Sony LYT800 sensor.

The Xperia 1 VI is expected to come with an OLED with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, which is a significant shift from the Xperia 1 V‘s 21:9 narrow display. The display will also reportedly be 1.5x brighter than the predecessor. The leaked promotional images also hint at an improved heat dissipation system that is supposed to help during outdoor camera usage.

Nonetheless, these are still leaked information at this point, and it is suggested to take it with a pinch of salt.

Poco F6 Pro is equal to Redmi K70, Xiaomi accidentally confirms

Xiaomi seems to have accidentally let slip some updates for the Poco F6 Pro, even though the phone hasn’t been officially announced yet. As reported by GSMArena, these updates reveal the phone’s codename as “Vermeer,” which is also the model name for the Redmi K70 Chinese model.

Xiaomi typically avoids reusing codenames for different devices. However, it seems they’ve taken a slightly lazy approach with the Poco F6 Pro. Nevertheless, this connection suggests that the Poco F6 Pro is essentially a rebranded version of the Redmi K70.

Poco F6 Pro Public Update Reveals its Redmi K70

If the connection holds true, the Poco F6 Pro will pack some impressive specs. The phone is expected to feature a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. It made its appearance on Geekbench with the same SoC and 16GB of RAM.

Rebranding Redmi phones isn’t a new strategy for Poco. It recently launched the Poco X6 Pro, which borrowed heavily from the Redmi K70E. However, the X6 Pro made some compromises, including a smaller battery and slower charging compared to the K70E.

Fortunately, it seems the Poco F6 Pro won’t face similar limitations. The leaked information suggests the phone will sport a large 6.67-inch OLED display with a sharp QHD+ resolution.

On the back, we can expect a camera system headlined by a 50MP main sensor. And for quick charging, the phone is rumored to support up to 120W fast charging.

A leak earlier this week revealed that Poco might launch the F6 Pro smartphone globally in June. So there’s still some time left for the phone to make it into the mass market. We’ll make sure to keep you informed about any new details that emerge regarding the device.

Xbox Goes Web-First: Mobile Game Store Launches in July, Bypassing App Stores

Microsoft is bypassing app store limitations with a web-based Xbox mobile game store launching in July. This store will prioritize Microsoft’s mobile games initially, including popular titles like Candy Crush and Minecraft, with plans to incorporate partner games later.

Using the mobile store, players can access their entire library and progress

Sarah Bond, Xbox president, emphasizes the store’s role in creating a unified gaming experience. Unlike current platforms, players can access their entire library, identity, rewards, and progress across various devices through the Xbox mobile store.

Xbox

While Microsoft previously anticipated app store regulations to change, their web-based approach suggests they’re not waiting. This initial step might evolve into a more traditional app store rivaling Google Play and Apple’s App Store, hinted at by Bond’s mention of “extending” beyond the web.

The web-only format presents challenges for Microsoft, and it’s unclear how it will compete with existing mobile game options. However, this launch marks a significant step for Microsoft’s mobile gaming ambitions, potentially paving the way for a more traditional app store in the future.

Apple Leverages M2 Ultra Chips in Data Centers for Future Mobile Intelligence

Apple is taking a cautious approach to generative AI, leveraging its existing M2 Ultra chips in data centers before transitioning to its next-generation M4 chips.

Apple believes that existing M series chips have sufficient security features

According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to offload complex AI queries to M2 Ultra processors running in their data centers. This strategy comes after an earlier plan, codenamed Project ACDC (Apple Chips in Data Center) which envisioned custom chips designed specifically for data centers. However, the trillion dollar company now believes its existing M series chips possess sufficient security features for their AI needs.

Apple M2 Ultra

These M2 Ultra chips will be deployed initially in Apple’s own data centers, with the potential for expansion to third-party servers in the future. Apple has a network of data centers across the US, with a new facility currently under construction in Waukee, Iowa.

While competitors like Google, Meta, and Microsoft have aggressively pursued generative AI, Apple has focused on research and development. In December, the company’s machine learning team released MLX, a framework designed to optimize AI models for Apple silicon. They’ve also published research exploring potential applications of AI on devices and how it could enhance existing features like Siri.

The recent emphasis on AI performance during the M4 chip announcement, highlighting its “outrageously powerful” neural engine, suggests Apple is gearing up for a more prominent role in the generative AI landscape.

Advanced AI tools may become a “massive issue” for jobs, says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed his “wildly ambitious” plans for the development of AI just a couple of months ago. He was seeking trillions in funding to improve chip technology and in turn, boost the development of AI. However, just months after revealing his ambitious plans to boost AI development, the CEO shared his concerns regarding the jobs and economy amidst the rise of AI tools during a Brookings Institute panel about AI and geopolitics.

More advanced AI tools may lead to mass job replacement in near future

When Sam Altman was asked about his thoughts on how AI-generated misinformation may affect elections, he shared his concerns about another issue – the future economy. “The thing I’m most worried about right now is, the sort of, the speed and magnitude of the socioeconomic change may have, and what the impacts on what that will be,” the CEO of OpenAI said.

His discussions were centered around how artificial intelligence may lead to mass job replacement and affect the economy. He wonders what could happen if people don’t think about the current situation seriously. According to him, GPT-4 still didn’t pose a significant risk to jobs and it made people think like, “Oh well, we were too worried about that, and that’s not a problem,” he said. “I have a fear that we just won’t take that one seriously enough going forward, and it’s a massive, massive issue.”

According to an International Monetary Fund (IMF) study from earlier this year, advanced AI technologies may impact roughly 60% of jobs in advanced economies. Reportedly, almost half of those jobs can be automated, which may lead to a mass job replacement that Altman talked about.

He told CNBC in an interview last year that he’s a “little bit scared” of ChatGPT as the tool is capable enough to eliminate certain jobs. While the tools can help people in their jobs, potentially helping them do more within less time, they can also replace people from certain jobs entirely. Some CEOs have also confirmed that they have replaced certain jobs with AI for better productivity and efficiency.

M4 iPad Pro benchmarks reveal it’s faster than M3 MacBook Pro

Apple announced exciting new iPad Air and iPad Pro models at their recent event. These come in all-new 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. During the Apple’s official presentation, Apple made a comparison on the performance of the M2-powered iPad Pro and the M4 iPad Pro. And now the Geekbench benchmark result for the M4 iPad Pro has suddenly appeared on Twitter.

Vadim Yuryev‘s post on Twitter reveals that the 2024 iPad Pro has a single-core score of 3,767 and a multi-core score of 14,677. Apple had already stated at the launch event that the new M4 chip is 1.5 times faster than the M2 iPad Pro. Despite introducing M3 Macbooks in October 2023, Apple skipped the M3 iPad Pro and instead introduced the M4 iPad Pro.

Skipping the M3 iPad actually makes sense since there’s only a 7-month difference between the M3 and M4 chips. In just 7 months, Apple managed to achieve a 25% performance boost, as seen on the Geekbench scores. Apple advertises the new M4 iPad Pro as the most powerful and thinnest iPad, a claim that we can confidently say indeed reflects reality.

The new M4 iPad Pro is 22% faster in single-core performance and 25% faster in multi-core performance. In fact, the M4 chip makes the 2024 iPad Pro even faster than the 11-core 14-inch M3 Pro MacBook Pro. It’s quite remarkable that Apple achieved a 25% performance boost in just 7 months, especially considering the new iPad Pro’s body is as thin as 5.1mm. Note that the Geekbench result reflects the performance of the 10-core M4 chip. Apple offers different M4 variants based on the storage variant in the new iPad Pro lineup. The 256GB and 512GB models have 3 performance cores, while the 1TB and 2TB models have 4 performance cores.
