BYD initiates its first-ever EV recall for 16,666 Seagulls due to a software bug that prevents reverse camera image display

BYD has announced the recall of thousands of the BYD Seagull electric vehicles in China. A total of 16,666 units of the Seagull EV are affected by the recall. The recall is due to a software bug that prevents reverse image display. This is the first time that BYD is initiating a recall of its product in several years. The BYD Seagull is the least expensive EV under the BYD lineup. It is also one of the highest-selling BYD EVs.

byd seagull

This is BYD’s first-ever EV recall yet

The affected BYD Seagull EVs were manufactured between April 7, 2023, and May 31, 2023. The recall starts on May 20, 2024, as announced by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). The software issue is related to the camera driver in the multimedia display assembly of some of the Seagull EV units. Drivers may experience situations where the reverse screen will not be displayed. This could significantly affect the driver’s field of vision and increase the risk of collisions during such reverse operations.

The software upgrade will result in the resolution of the reverse image display issue. The upgrade is free and will be over the air (OTA) for the affected vehicles. Additionally, BYD will contact users of vehicles that cannot implement the recall via OTA and also implement the upgrade at no extra cost. The upgrade, BYD says, will eliminate potential safety hazards that could result from a dysfunctional reverse camera system.

The BYD Seagull is known as the Dolphin Mini in some markets outside China. It went on sale on April 26, 2023, with a price tag slightly above $10,000 (73,800 yuan). The Seagull Glory Edition was launched in March 2024 with a launch price of 69,800 yuan ($9,640). BYD sold more than 280,000 units of the Seagull in 2023 and this accounted for 9% of BYD’s annual sales.

YouTuber converts Apple AirPods Max Lightning port to USB-C with custom kit

A YouTube video has surfaced of an innovator converting an Apple AirPods Max device to a USB-C connection in place of its original Lightning port. This was accomplished using a custom kit which can be purchased online.

Apple Airpods Max Pro

The AirPods Max is yet to officially join the list of Apple models that uses USB-C ports

The prevalence of the use of USB-C charging solutions for a variety of products makes them a versatile option. It is an important fact that iPhones are now part of the products that offer USB-C charging and it is expected that the entire AirPods lineup will subsequently adopt the USB-C charging solution.

Apple has already begun producing AirPods that do not need a Lightning port to charge. This facility is yet to be extended to the more expensive flagship wireless headphones on the Apple portfolio. The YouTube video demonstrated how an AirPods Max could be easily converted to a USB-C connection. The innovator is named as Ken Pillionel showed that a replacement flex cable can convert the AirPods Max to USB-C. The custom kit comes with all the miniature spacers and precision-cut adhesive strips for snugly fitting the USB-C into the headphone’s right cup.

It is noted that the custom kit is used at the owner’s risk, as some mostly cosmetic damage may be incurred during installation. Otherwise, the replacement procedure is effective and the USB-C connection will work perfectly for the AirPods Max. Its operation will be similar to that of the new Apple AirPods Pro 2 case. The AirPods Max custom kit is compatible with other USB-C accessories like the 3.5mm audio jack. The AirPods Max is currently priced at $549. Thus, if the USB-C switch must be implemented, it should be done with caution so that important components of the premium headphones are not damaged in the process.

Samsung Galaxy S25 will have improved battery life, not due to increased size but thanks to AI

Samsung has plenty of time to cook the Galaxy S25 series smartphones. However, this doesn’t mean we won’t hear any details about the company’s upcoming flagship.

A new rumor suggests that Samsung might use AI to improve battery life in the S25 series without needing to increase the physical battery capacity.

AI-powered battery optimization technique isn’t entirely a new concept. Samsung’s existing AI Power Saving mode optimizes background tasks based on user patterns.

Samsung Galaxy S25 AI Battery

However, the latest rumor suggests a new kind of approach to battery saving. Instead of limiting CPU and GPU performance or tweaking background tasks, it will ‘eliminate’ unnecessary background processes that drain system resources to make the battery run longer. to longer battery life.

To be honest, that doesn’t seem like something that needs heavy AI, but there could be more to it than meets the eye. The rumor claims this new AI system could extend the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s battery life by 5-10%, which would be a welcome improvement.

Samsung has certainly been embracing AI in recent releases. The Galaxy S24 series marked the debut of Galaxy AI, and upcoming foldable phones like the Z6 are expected to further improve this system.

Evidently, Samsung has been viewing AI as a key differentiator for its smartphones against competitors and is likely to integrate it even more deeply into the S25 series.

However, it’s important to remember that these are just rumors at this stage. While there might be some truth to the leak, take it with a pinch of salt.

No effects of ban: Huawei found to be secretly funding research competition in the US

According to a report by Bloomberg, Chinese tech giant Huawei is secretly funding a research competition in the United States.

The competition, managed by the Washington D.C.-based Optica Foundation, has awarded millions of dollars to scientists and researchers globally, including those affiliated with top US universities like Harvard and USC.

However, these universities, along with many others, have restrictions in place against collaboration with Huawei due to national security concerns.

Huawei funding reasearch competition in US

The Optica Foundation’s website has a list of all the research and fellowship programs it organizes throughout the year. Among them is the one backed by Huawei which reportedly offers the highest prize value of $1 million. It is also the only one without a list of individual or corporate sponsors.

Interestingly, according to a confidential document reviewed by Bloomberg, the foundation isn’t obligated to disclose Huawei as the funding source.

The clause is, that the foundation “shall not be required to designate Huawei as the funding source or program sponsor” of the competition, and “the existence and content of this Agreement and the relationship between the Parties shall also be considered Confidential Information.”

Bloomberg also reached out to applicants, university officials, and a judge from the competition to find out if they were aware of Huawei’s involvement.

But none of them knew Huawei’s involvement in it. Many applicants believed that the funding came directly from the Optica Foundation and not a foreign entity.

Optica CEO Liz Rogan has sided with Huawei on this occasion, saying some foundation donors, including US donors, “prefer to remain anonymous” and that “there is nothing unusual about this practice.”

A Huawei spokesperson told Bloomberg that the competition was created solely to support global research and academic exchange.  The spokesperson clarified that Huawei’s anonymity was to prevent the contest from being perceived as promotional and that there was no ill intent behind the decision.

The revelation of Huawei’s covert funding is likely to add another layer of tensions between the US and China. Now it remains to be seen how US authorities will react to this news, and what, if any, repercussions Huawei might face.

HMD’s new phone codenamed ‘Tomcat’ appears on Geekbench, the chipset could be Snapdragon 7s Gen 2

HMD, the parent company of Nokia has recently launched three new self-branded repairability-focused entry-level smartphones – the Pulse, Pulse+, and Pulse Pro. The Pulse series is powered by the UNISOC T606 processor. But soon after the release of the entry-level phones, a new GeekBench listing reveals that the company is working on a more powerful device as well.

HMD Global Tomcat could be powered by Snapdragon 7s Gen 2

HMD’s new phone codenamed ‘Tomcat’ has appeared in the Geekbench benchmark library scoring 965 in single-core and 2625 in multi-core. The listing reveals that it is an octa-core processor with a 4+4 core cluster. The base frequency for the two clusters is 1.96GHz and 2.4GHz.

While the name of the chipset is not mentioned in the listing, the above-mentioned parameters match with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. The single and multi-core score is also similar to the alleged chipset. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 equips 4x Cortex-A78 and 4 x Cortex-A55 cores. For graphics, it equips the Adreno 710 GPU. This 4nm chipset from Qualcomm supports a 200MP camera sensor, 4K video recording at 30fps, 1080p video recording at 120fps, and Multi-frame HDR. However, the implementation is up to the manufacturer.

While the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is not particularly a high-end chipset, it is still significantly powerful as compared to chips like the UNISOC T606 or the Snapdragon 680. This Snapdragon 7s Gen2-powered smartphone could be positioned as a mid-to-high-end device as the Nokia 8.3 from 2020, powered by the Snapdragon 765G 5G chipset.

Apple faces tough competition in China as iPhone sales decline

Apple is encountering challenges, as sales decline significantly in the crucial Chinese market. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, recently acknowledged the challenges posed by what he described as “the most competitive market in the world.”

The latest figures reveal a significant decline in iPhone sales both globally and specifically in Greater China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Global iPhone revenue dropped by 10% in the first quarter, marking the most substantial decrease since late 2020. In Greater China, iPhone sales fell by 8% to $16.4 billion during the same period.

Apple’s market share in China’s smartphone market has been steadily decreasing, with iPhone sales plummeting by 19.1% in the first quarter alone. This decline has seen Apple slipping to the third position in the market, capturing 15.7% of the domestic market, behind competitors like Vivo and Honor.

Meanwhile, Huawei, Apple’s Chinese rival, has experienced a surge in smartphone sales, with a nearly 70% increase in the first quarter. Huawei’s market share now closely trails Apple’s at 15.5%, with the company’s net profit soaring by an impressive 564%.

Huawei’s success can be attributed in part to patriotic sentiment, particularly following the release of the Mate 60 series phones, powered by domestically produced chips. The latest Pura 70 series phones from Huawei, equipped with China-made processors, are posing significant competition to Apple’s iPhone 15 and 16 series.

Despite these challenges, Tim Cook expressed confidence in China’s long-term potential for Apple. The company is making substantial investments in artificial intelligence (AI) development, with Cook hinting at an upcoming AI strategy reveal at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference scheduled for June.

While Apple’s financial performance saw a decline due to the slump in iPhone shipments, executives downplayed its significance, attributing it to difficult year-over-year comparisons. Analysts, however, raise concerns about Apple’s performance in China, where intense competition from Huawei is impacting iPhone shipments.

Apple remains heavily reliant on iPhone sales, contributing about 52% of its total revenues. Despite efforts to diversify, other product categories like Mac computers saw only modest growth, insufficient to offset the overall revenue decline.

In response to questions about the impact of investments in generative AI, Cook emphasized Apple’s focus on services, which saw significant growth in the March-ending quarter. However, questions linger about the ability of a hardware company like Apple to effectively monetize software features amidst fierce competition in the Chinese market.

The monitor sports a sleek, ultra-thin design with an anti-glare coating and a customizable turbine light ring on the back. Connectivity options include two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DP 1.4 port, and two USB 3.0 ports.

Pricing & availability

The Samsung G60SD is currently available for pre-order in China at a price of 6,999 yuan (around $989 USD).

In related news, HKC has also launched a 27-inch 2K gaming monitor in China with a 2K resolution and 240Hz refresh rate. It is also quite cheaper than the Samsung G60SD, costing just 2899 Yuan (around $410 USD). Although one big reason for it being this affordable (relatively) is likely because it uses an IPS panel.
