<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s8-g950f/">Samsung Galaxy S8</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-s8-plus-g955f/">Samsung Galaxy S8+</a> with model numbers SM-G950F and SM-G955F respectively are getting a new update. As per the Sammobile report, the S8 is getting the firmware version <strong>G950FXXSBDUA3  </strong>and S8+ <strong>G955FXXSBDUA3 </strong>across Latin America(Exynos models).</p>
<p>Back in February 2019, Samsung rolled out the <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/one-ui">One UI</a> update for the Galaxy S8-Series delivering the promise of extending the One UI to older Android versions(<a href="http://www.gizmochina.comt/tag/android-9">pie</a>). However, they haven&#8217;t received any major updates after that. In fact, the company pushed them to the Quarterly cycle last year.</p>
<p>Considering it&#8217;s been four years since the official launch, it is appreciative of Samsung to at least roll out the security patches for those who are clinging on to their devices. Speaking of which, Samsung Galaxy S8&#8217;s IP68 and GPS locator <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/07/24/samsung-galaxy-s8s-ip68-rating-and-gps-locator-save-tourists-whose-boat-capsized-at-sea/">have saved lives</a> in the past. The devices, which were a solid offering of their time, might still be living to see another day for some even today.</p>
<p>Hence, if you are someone who is having one of these devices, we suggest you update it to the latest security patch ASAP(as soon as possible). You can do it by navigating to Settings-&gt;Software Update-&gt;Download and Install.</p>
<p>Coming back, the <a href="https://www.sammobile.com/news/samsung-galaxy-s8-receiving-january-2021-security-update/">update</a> doesn&#8217;t have any other changes apart from the January 2021 <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/tag/security-patch">security patch</a>. And this OTA(over-the-air) should extend to all the other regions and versions soon so if you haven&#8217;t received it yet, don&#8217;t panic.</p>

But, in a surprising move, a small company named Fairphone is trying to change it.</p>
<p>The company has started rolling out the Android 9 Pie operating system to its Fairphone 2 which was launched way back in the year 2015. This is quite impressive, especially for an Android smartphone that was launched running <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-lollipop">Android 5.1 Lollipop</a> OS.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-327854 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Fairphone-2-e1592376488440.jpg?x10805" alt="Fairphone 2" width="518" height="421" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Fairphone-2-e1592376488440.jpg 518w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Fairphone-2-e1592376488440-300x244.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Fairphone-2-e1592376488440-517x420.jpg 517w" sizes="(max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px" /></p>
<h6>With this new update, the Fairphone 2 becomes the only smartphone powered the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> Snapdragon 801 processor to run the Android 9 Pie operating system. Although Android 9 Pie isn&#8217;t the latest version of the OS and is around two years old now, it still is much better than the Android Lollipop.</h6>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/17/companies-try-to-poach-hisilicon-executives/">Unisoc and other Chinese companies are trying to poach talent from Huawei&#8217;s chipset arm HiSilicon</a></strong></h6>
<p>Most smartphone companies are promising Android update support for two years after the launch of the device. So, getting a major Android update for a five-year-old smartphone certainly is an impressive thing.</p>
<p>For those who are unaware, Fairphone is a small company that makes Android smartphones with an aim to design and produce devices with minimal environmental impact. Thus, their smartphones are <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/12/fairphone-3-becomes-the-second-phone-ever-to-get-a-10-10-repairability-score-on-ifixit/">built with repairability in mind</a> and the company tries to offer updates and security patches for years.</p>
<p>The company has also launched a successor to this smartphone, named Fairphone 3. It features a 5.65-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 632 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, Android 9 Pie OS, and 3,000mAh battery. The phone has scored 10 out of 10 points on the iFixit repairability score.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-277751" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05.jpg?x10805" alt="Redmi note 8 pro featured 05" width="1620" height="1080" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05.jpg 1620w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Redmi-note-8-pro-featured-05-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1620px) 100vw, 1620px" /></a></p>
<p>Despite being rolled out as MIUI 11 stable update for the Redmi Note 8 Pro, it&#8217;s likely that this is a test stable build being sent out to a limited number of users. There were a number of users on the forums who didn&#8217;t get the update, so it&#8217;s possible that many users will have to wait for a week or two to get the final build.</p>
<p>Note that this MIUI 11 update is still based on Android 10. But it brings interesting <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/miui-11">MIUI 11</a> features to the device, including a redesigned UI and productivity features. You can read the entire list of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/24/miui-11-officially-launched-features-new-design-and-production-tools-galore/">MIUI 11 features from here</a>.</p>
<p>The Redmi Note 8 Pro features the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> Helio G90T gaming processor with 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 64GB / 128GB storage. The quad-camera setup at the back comes with an f/1.7 aperture 64-megapixel <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/09/samsung-64-mp-isocell-bright-gw1-gm2-sensors/">ISOCELL Bright GW1</a> as the primary lens, an ultrawide lens of 8-megapixel, a 2-megapixel macro lens with 2cm focal length and a depth sensor of 2-megapixel.</p>

<p>The timing of the MIUI 11 update for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-8-pro/">Redmi Note 8 Pro</a> is in line with the promised schedule. The Chinese variant of the phone was expected to receive the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/24/miui-11-stable-and-developer-rollout-and-devices-confirmed/"> new MIUI update around early November</a>, while the global / Indian variant is said to receive the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/16/xiaomi-announces-miui-11-global-rollout-roadmap/">update near the end of December</a>. Despite being a newly launched device, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is one of the last devices to get the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/miui-11"> MIUI 11</a> update, both in China as well as globally.</p>
<p>The new update should bring interesting MIUI 11 features to the device, including a redesigned UI and productivity features. <p>The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> Helio G90T gaming processor with 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 64GB / 128GB storage options. <p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> is finally rolling out MIUI 11 Stable release for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-pocophone-f1/">POCO F1</a> users across the world. Users on Reddit have reported that their smartphones are being updated to the new MIUI version via OTA. Notably, this new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/miui-11">MIUI 11</a> stable build is still based on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-pie">Android 9</a> Pie version.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Pocophone-F1_featured_2.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-221364" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Pocophone-F1_featured_2.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="609" height="383" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Pocophone-F1_featured_2.jpg 609w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Pocophone-F1_featured_2-300x189.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px" /></a></p>
<p>Apart from the new MIUI 11 features (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/24/miui-11-officially-launched-features-new-design-and-production-tools-galore/">complete list here</a>), the update also brings the latest October 2019 security patch to the POCO F1. We have reports of at least one user in Italy getting this stable build but users across the globe should eventually get this update in the next few days.</p>
<figure style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" src="https://preview.redd.it/6erwwg2okav31.png?width=640&amp;crop=smart&amp;auto=webp&amp;s=97601e9c1147c3234457fa5788a53d0078325a39" alt="Post image" width="640" height="1201" /><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">Source: TheMariacho (Reddit)</figcaption></figure>
<p>The update is likely going to be rolled out in stages. So you might have to wait a while before you receive the OTA update notification. And if you don&#8217;t want to wait around, download and flash the stable ROM from <a href="http://bigota.d.miui.com/V11.0.5.0.PEJMIXM/miui_POCOF1Global_V11.0.5.0.PEJMIXM_a1e9fd71d3_9.0.zip">here</a>. Note that it is a large file (over 1.8GB in size), so it is recommended that you download and install it over a Wi-Fi connection.</p>
<p>While this is based on Android 9 Pie, POCO F1 is confirmed to receive an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android-10">Android 10</a> update, eventually. There&#8217;s no word on an exact schedule for its release, but users could probably get it by the end of this year. Note that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-7-pro/">Redmi Note 7 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-7/">Redmi 7</a> users have already received the stable MIUI 11 update a few days ago.</p>

The handset that was announced in July this year has been under testing for Android Pie since some time. However, it seems Huawei is now ready to seed the update via OTA to some regions. Do note that not all variants are receiving the update and a post on Reddit shows the Chinese variant has received the update.</p>
<p>Furthermore, Huawei has also released a timeline for other handsets that are progressing on EMUI 9.0 with Android Pie. Below are the devices.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-227177 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/huawei-nova-3-emui-9.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="637" height="1280" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/huawei-nova-3-emui-9.jpg 637w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/huawei-nova-3-emui-9-149x300.jpg 149w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/huawei-nova-3-emui-9-510x1024.jpg 510w" sizes="(max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Nova 2s has released a beta version on November 20th</li>
<li>Nova 3i started beta recruitment on November 28th</li>
<li>Nova 3e expects to launch beta recruitment in January</li>
<li>Maimang 7 has launched a beta survey on November 28</li>
</ul>
<p>Speaking about the Nova 3 update, it weighs around 4.7GB in size and comes with build number PAR-AL00 9.0.0.101. That&#8217;s quite a big update and if any Chinese user wishes to update their Nova 3, he/she should probably check for adequate internal storage before downloading the OTA. However, users might want to consider updating in the first place because there&#8217;s a big change in the update.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>With regards to the features, the changelog mentions that EMUI 9.0 removes support for third-party launchers which means users will be stuck with EMUI after the update. That&#8217;s a pretty disappointing move if you&#8217;re into third-party launchers like Nova. Other than that, the update spruces up the battery life, animations and even face unlock is faster than before. The new HiVision feature that detects food and calories was also found to be very accurate by the Reddit user who posted the changelog.</p>
