<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lenovo</a> has introduced the Chromebox Micro, a device that&#8217;s smaller than most in its category. With dimensions measuring a mere 163 x 79 x 20mm (6.4″ x 3.1″ x 0.8″), this ultra-compact <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chromeos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ChromeOS</a> running device offers a form factor resembling two smartphones stacked on top of each other. Set to hit the market in the first quarter of 2024, the Lenovo Chromebox Micro is priced at an attractive $219 and up.</p>

<h2>The Chromebox Micro offers an Intel Celeron N4500 processor, 8 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC storage</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="840" height="472" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Lenovo-Chromebox-Micro-in-hand-840w-472h.jpg.webp?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-588687" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Lenovo-Chromebox-Micro-in-hand-840w-472h.jpg.webp 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Lenovo-Chromebox-Micro-in-hand-840w-472h.jpg-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Lenovo-Chromebox-Micro-in-hand-840w-472h.jpg-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Lenovo-Chromebox-Micro-in-hand-840w-472h.jpg-696x391.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Lenovo-Chromebox-Micro-in-hand-840w-472h.jpg-747x420.webp 747w" sizes="(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px" /></figure></div>

<p>Lenovo showcased this mini device positioned as an &#8220;ultra-thin and affordable media player&#8221; at the Digital Signage Experience show. The Chromebox Micro runs on an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/intel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Intel</a> Celeron N4500 processor, boasting a 6-watt, 2-core, 2-thread configuration based on the Intel Jasper Lake Architecture. It comes with 8GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. Encased in a fanless metal chassis, the Chromebox Micro promises silent 24/7 operation. The ventless encasing makes it resistant to dust.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="736" height="500" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/chromebox-micro_03-736x500-1.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-588686" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/chromebox-micro_03-736x500-1.jpg 736w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/chromebox-micro_03-736x500-1-300x204.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/chromebox-micro_03-736x500-1-696x473.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/chromebox-micro_03-736x500-1-618x420.jpg 618w" sizes="(max-width: 736px) 100vw, 736px" /></figure></div>

<p>The device is equipped with a thoughtful array of ports, including 2 x USB Type-C, 2 x USB Type-A, 1 x HDMI, 1 x Ethernet, and 1 x 3.5mm audio. Weighing a mere 450 grams (~1 pound), it&#8217;s designed for flexibility, with the option to mount it to the back of a display. Lenovo has further collaborated with a display maker to offer 15.6&#8243; and 21.5&#8243; displays tailored for use with the Chromebox Micro, featuring cut-outs in the back for easier mounting.</p>

<p>Although the Chromebox Micro stands out with its combination of compact size and functionality, it&#8217;s worth noting that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/asus/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Asus</a> Chromebit still holds the title of the smallest ChromeOS computer. Launched in 2015 as a $100 Chromebox-on-a-stick, the Chromebit was designed to plug directly into the HDMI port of a display. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> also reveals plans to collaborate with additional manufacturers to bring more affordable, compact, enterprise-grade Chromeboxes to the market.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/wi-fi/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wi-Fi </a>and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/bluetooth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bluetooth</a> have been the go-to wireless technologies for connecting devices for a long time. But ultra-wideband (UWB) is emerging as the next big thing, promising high-speed data transfer. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> is now exploring the potential of ultra-wideband (UWB) for Chromebooks, with a focus on use cases such as connecting Chromebooks to each other, to phones, and to multiple devices at once.</p>

<p><em><a href="https://chromeunboxed.com/uwb-ultra-wide-band-is-coming-to-chromebooks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chrome Unboxed</a> </em>recently uncovered the details about UWB on Chromebooks. They came across mentions of UWB (Ultra-Wideband) in <a href="https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromiumos/platform/tast/+/4724751" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chromium Gerrit</a>, a tool that developers use to discuss and review changes to source code. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="900" height="505" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-with-Ultrawide-band-technology.jpg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-559492" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-with-Ultrawide-band-technology.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-with-Ultrawide-band-technology-300x168.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-with-Ultrawide-band-technology-768x431.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-with-Ultrawide-band-technology-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-with-Ultrawide-band-technology-749x420.jpg 749w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure></div>

<p>In particular, Google is in the process of experimenting with UWB for various purposes on Chromebooks. These experiments involve trying out connections between Chromebooks, connections between Chromebooks and phones, and even connections involving multiple users, going beyond just one-on-one links.</p>

<p>Ultra-wideband for Chromebooks is still in the testing phase, so it could be a while before we see them on a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/chromeos/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ChromeOS</a> device. However, the potential applications of UWB on Chromebooks are exciting. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="536" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-1024x536.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Chromebooks Ultra-wideband" class="wp-image-559493" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-768x402.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-696x364.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-1068x559.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband-803x420.jpg 803w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Google-Chromebooks-Ultra-wideband.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>If you’re not familiar with UWB (ultra-wideband), it is a short-range wireless communication technology that is energy-efficient, versatile, and cost-effective. It can transfer data quickly, up to 675Mbps, and allows for highly accurate location tracking down to the centimeter. This is why Apple AirTags use UWB to reliably track your lost items.</p>

<p>Ultra-wideband technology in a Chromebook could open up new possibilities for connections. As the blog points out, it could make wireless extended displays a reality. This would be a major improvement, as it would eliminate the need for cables and make it easier to set up and use multiple displays.</p>

<h4>AMD turns to Samsung for next gen CPUs for Chromebooks</h4>

<p>The news arrives from known tipster @OreXda who shared the information on Twitter. The leak claims that the chipmaking has signed a deal to use the South Korean tech giant&#8217;s semiconductor foundry. This agreement will have AMD gain access to Samsung&#8217;s advanced 4nm process technology. As of right now, the Chromebooks segment is dominated by notebooks featuring Intel and Qualcomm CPUs. </p>

<p>So, the move to using 4nm chips could help in making upcoming AMD powered Chromebooks more competitive in the market. Unfortunately, the leak doesn&#8217;t reveal any finer details regarding the yet to be announced chipset from AMD. At the moment, the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC, has been flooded with orders for its 4nm process by various tech giants. This news also follows as Samsung pushes to expand its 4nm production capacity. </p>

<p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">AMD signed to use Samsung Foundry 4nm <a href="https://t.co/FuWFJLpvjY">pic.twitter.com/FuWFJLpvjY</a></p>&mdash; Connor / 코너 / コナー (@OreXda) <a href="https://twitter.com/OreXda/status/1652931486528716800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 1, 2023</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>

<p>The two companies are already working on the upcoming Ryzen Z1 series of chipsets that will power upcoming handheld gaming consoles like the ASUS ROG Ally. Meaning, it would arrive as no surprise if AMD turns to Samsung&#8217;s Foundry for its next gen processors dedicated for Chromebooks. Samsung already has its own Chromebook lineup, so AMD may also soon partner up with the brand for its newer Chromebook models.</p>

So, let&#8217;s check them out.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-394725 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Chrome OS Logo Featured" width="4000" height="2250" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured.jpg 4000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Google-Chrome-OS-Logo-Featured-1920x1080.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 4000px) 100vw, 4000px" /></p>
<p>The <a href="https://blog.google/products/chromebooks/better-with-other-devices/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chrome OS 103 update</a>&#8216;s first new feature is the change made to the Phone Hub. As we know, the Phone Hub is a built-in control center that lets you respond to text messages, check your phone’s battery, turn on tethering, and more. Now, it is also capable of fetching your recently clicked images straight from your Android smartphone to your Chromebook.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-367357 size-full aligncenter" src="https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Chromebook-Phone-Hub.png" alt="" width="562" height="573" /></p>
<p>This will make life easier in situations when you need to quickly snap a picture to attach it to an email. And the best part is that users don&#8217;t need to be connected to the internet for this feature to work.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The second major feature in this update is the ability to securely connect your Chromebook to any WiFi network you have saved on your smartphone without the need for a password. It works using the Nearby Share feature in Chrome OS that also lets users share music, pictures, or other files between other Chromebooks or Android devices.<img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-367358 " src="https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/ChromeOS-nearby-share-wifi.png" alt="" width="272" height="591" /></p>
<p>To try out this new feature, all you have to do is go to the internet settings page on your Android phone, select “Wi-Fi network” and “Share.” Then tap the “Nearby” tile under the QR code, and select the Chromebook you want to get online. Nearby Share will deliver the Wi-Fi credentials (as in the network name and password), and the Chromebook will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-367359 " src="https://images.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/ChromeOS-fast-pair.png" alt="" width="563" height="445" /></p>
<p>Other than these features, Google has also announced that Chromebooks will soon be able to easily pair with headphones or other compatible accessories via Google’s Fast Pair framework. Whenever a new pair of Bluetooth headphones are nearby, a notification will pop up on the Chromebooks screen asking if the user wants to pair with this device. This feature will roll out later this summer.</p>

It was because the pandemic pushed people more toward tablet and Chromebook purchases for work, studying at home, and entertainment. However, now with the pandemic situation stabilizing, the shipments of these devices are also declining, according to data from the <em>IDC.</em></p>
<p>As per the <a href="https://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS49064522&amp;utm_medium=rss_feed&amp;utm_source=alert&amp;utm_campaign=rss_syndication">report</a>, global tablet shipments hit 38.4 million units in the first quarter of 2022, a 3.9 percent decrease year-on-year as demand declined. Shipments of tablets are still higher than the pre-pandemic level, however, growth has slowed down, indicating that the market is rebounding to normal seasonality. Furthermore, the intensive device purchases in 2020 and 2021 caused many customers to hold on to their freshly purchased tablets.</p>

<p>Chromebooks are not untouched by this trend and witnessed a 61.9% decline in shipments in Q1 of 2022. The decline in Chromebooks is unsurprising considering the building of inventories owing to lower demand over the previous three quarters, revealed Jitesh Ubrani, research manager with IDC.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-457846 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022.jpg?x10805" alt="Top Five Chromebook Companies, Worldwide Shipments, Market Share, and Year-Over-Year Growth, Q1 2022" width="1352" height="571" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022.jpg 1352w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022-300x127.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022-768x324.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022-1024x432.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022-696x294.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022-1068x451.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Top-Five-Chromebook-Companies-Worldwide-Shipments-Market-Share-and-Year-Over-Year-Growth-Q1-2022-994x420.jpg 994w" sizes="(max-width: 1352px) 100vw, 1352px" /></p>
<p>While the global market contracted due to saturation in established markets, Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan and China) witnessed growth in the quarter due to many substantial investments in digital education in the area.</p>
<p>The report also mentions that several new players like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/realme/">Realme</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/">OPPO</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/">Xiaomi</a> have also entered this emerging segment. However, their volumes are not significant enough to move the market as of now.</p>
<p>Coming to the companies, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> is dominating the tablet market with over 31.5% market share and shipments of 12.1 million units. However, the Cupertino company’s shipments of iPads have dropped by 4.6%.</p>
<p>Lenovo is leading the Chromebook segment with a 23.2% market share and shipments of 1.2 million units. However, the Chinese company is facing a sharp decline of 65.6% in Q1 of 2022.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-440786" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Chromebooks-Q4-2021.png?x10805" alt="Chromebooks Q4 2021" width="949" height="431" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Chromebooks-Q4-2021.png 949w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Chromebooks-Q4-2021-300x136.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Chromebooks-Q4-2021-768x349.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Chromebooks-Q4-2021-696x316.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Chromebooks-Q4-2021-925x420.png 925w" sizes="(max-width: 949px) 100vw, 949px" /></p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/acer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Acer</a> came out on top in Q4 2021 with 1.3 million shipments and enjoyed a 26.3% share of the Chromebook market. The brand however was down by 43.3% when compared to their 2.2 million Chromebook shippings in the fourth quarter of 2020.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Dell/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dell</a> came in at second with 1 million shipments and commanded a 20.3% share in the Chromebook segment, however, the brand was down 63.6% compared to their 2.7 million Chromebook shipments in Q4 2020.</p>
<p>With a 16.1% market share, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Lenovo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lenovo</a> secured the third position shipping 800,000 Chromebooks in Q4 2021. This is a 73.5% decline in shipments by the brand that shipped 2.7 million Chromebooks between October and December 2020.</p>
<p>In the fourth position, we have <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/Samsung/">Samsung</a> with 600,000 Chromebook shipments in Q4 2021. The brand was down by 22.4% compared to their Q4 2020 shipments.</p>
<p>Surprisingly, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/HP/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HP</a> came in at fifth position with just 500,000 Chromebook shipments in Q4 2021 compared to their 3.5 million shipments in Q4 2020. This marked an 86.7% decrease in shipments year-over-year.</p>
<p><em>Jitesh Ubrani</em>, a research manager with IDC stated that this drop in shipments of Chromebooks in Q4 2021 is due to &#8220;much of the initial demand for Chromebooks has been satiated in primary markets like the U.S. and Europe and this has led to a slowdown in overall shipments.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added, &#8220;Supply has also been unusually tight for Chromebooks as component shortages have led vendors to prioritize Windows machines due to their higher price tags, further suppressing Chromebook shipments on a global scale.&#8221;</p>
<p>Though Chromebook demand in emerging markets has seen continued growth in the past year and is expected to grow throughout the pandemic.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://9to5google.com/2022/01/26/gaming-chromebooks-rgb-keyboard/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>9To5Google</em> </a>report, a number of Chrome OS devices are set to launch in the market soon, and will be built for gaming. 9To5Google stated that they have been tracking the progress of gaming on Chromebooks and believes that these new models are just around the corner. As of right now, gaming streaming services like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-stadia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Google Stadia</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/geforce-now/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Nvidia GeForce Now</a>, and others are the only way to experience games from the Steam library.</p>
<p>But now, it seems that Chrome OS will soon support Steam and other Linux compatible PC games, similar to how it supports Linux and Android apps. This will be a part of a long running project that is codenamed Borealis. Although, there has not been any official announcement of Steam games being supported on Chromebook. But this hints at Google&#8217;s plan on expanding in gaming through both Steam games and other game streaming services as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-394792 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming.jpg?x10805" alt="ASUS Chromebooks Flip CM5 gaming" width="1234" height="732" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming.jpg 1234w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming-300x178.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming-768x456.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming-1024x607.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming-696x413.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming-1068x634.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/ASUS-Chromebook-Flip-CM5-gaming-708x420.jpg 708w" sizes="(max-width: 1234px) 100vw, 1234px" /></p>
<p>Well, since Chromebooks with gaming are believe to launch in the near future, it arrives as no surprise that the new Chrome OS devices will support RGB as well. The report stated that the Search Engine giant is working on offering full color RGB support on keyboards on Chromebooks. With Nvidia and MediaTek working together to bring RTX graphics to the platform, its only a matter of time that dedicated gaming Chromebooks launch Steam games and RGB software support.</p>

The 2017 flagship had a custom-made image processor called the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/10/18/google-pixel-2-features-pixel-visual-core-image-processor-enhanced-photography-experience/">Pixel Visual Core</a>, an 8-core image processing unit. The chip was then replaced with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/03/pixel-4-and-pixel-4-xl-official-spec-sheet-reveals-pixel-neural-core-soc-inside/">Pixel Neural Core</a> in the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/google-pixel-4/">Pixel 4</a> series. For the upcoming <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/pixel-6">Pixel 6</a> series, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> will ship the two phones with its own custom-built System on a Chip (SoC) called Tensor. A new report has revealed this is the first of more chips to come.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-403576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Google-Tensor.jpg?x10805" alt="Google Tensor" width="453" height="558" /></p>
<p>It has been reported that Google plans to announce its own CPUs which will power Chromebooks and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/chrome-os">Chrome OS</a>-powered tablets. The news comes from <em><a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Tech/Semiconductors/Google-developing-own-CPUs-for-Chromebook-laptops">Nikkei Asia</a></em> and they cite three sources with knowledge of the matter. These CPUs are expected to begin rolling out in 2023 though Google has declined to comment on the matter.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s processors will be based on the Arm architecture just like that of other chip companies such as <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a>. The advantage of using its own chip includes being able to more easily customize features for the devices they power.</p>
<p>A chief analyst at Isaiah Research, Eric Tsang, who spoke to <em>Nikkei Asia</em>, said that while the use of one&#8217;s own chip will result in better software and hardware integration, the business of making your own chip requires a lot of investment and long-term commitments. Peter Hanbury, a partner at Bain &amp; Co., a consulting firm, also shares similar sentiments. He cited the cost associated with developing a chipset which is about $500 million for a 5nm processor and $50 million for a 28nm processor. Mr. Tsang also stated that new players will have to compete with older and more established players for production capacities. Delays in production can result in products arriving later than planned.</p>
<p>The publication also reports that Google has asked its suppliers to prepare 50% more production capacity for the Pixel 6 series compared to that of 2019. It is said that it shipped a total of 7 million Pixel phones in 2019 but that figure fell to 3.7 million last year. Sales have picked up this year, so Google is optimistic sales of the Pixel 6 series should be better.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that the few devices(with <a href="https://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices">Hatch</a> baseboard) have already had the access to the Android 11 features but are on the Beta version. The stable version of this should start rolling out to the above-mentioned list soon.</p>
<p>Also, you can look out for features like Dark Mode, uniform scaling of apps, and more. Lastly, the report says that the repository also has some weird names which could be of development tools, upcoming devices, or shelved products.</p>

The yet-to-be-named chipset will go against other flagship chipsets when it launches.</p>
<p>MediaTek also revealed key details about the chipset. For starters, it will be a 6nm processor that will be built by TSMC. It will also feature Arm Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 3.0GHz.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-353242 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/MediaTek-6nm-chip.jpg?x10805" alt="MediaTek 6nm chip" width="2229" height="1262" /></p>
<p>This chipset is most likely <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/31/two-new-mediatek-mobile-phone-chipsets-with-cortex-a78-cores-in-development/">one of two reported to be coming soon</a> by the Chinese leaker, <em>Digital Chat Station</em>. A little more than a week ago, he had revealed that the Taiwan-based company is developing 5nm and 6nm chipsets with cortex-A78 cores.</p>
<p>In a Weibo post today, the leaker also r<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/10/mediatek-mt689x-6nm-chipset-details-appear-expected-to-score-600k-at-antutu/">evealed that the 6nm processor has the model number MT689X</a> and features the same CPU frequency and architecture as the Exynos 1080 which is scheduled to be <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/01/samsung-to-unveil-exynos-1080-processor-on-november-12-in-china/">announced at an event in China later this week</a>.</p>
<p>MediaTek will announce the chipset before the end of the year and we may be lucky to see it appear on a phone this year too, most likely one from a Chinese company.</p>
<p>Alongside the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/10/mediatek-announces-7nm-dimensity-700-5g-processor-for-affordable-5g-phones/">Dimensity 700</a>, MediaTek also announced two new processors designed for Chromebooks.
