Over the last couple of weeks, reports of the next Xbox started circulating online. While Microsoft has failed to compete with Sony’s PlayStation in the console wars, the brand isn’t giving up on consoles yet. When it might arrive

Most credible leaks and reporting point to a release window that could be between 2026 and 2027. Microsoft could be planning on launching the next Xbox sometime in 2027 or as early as late 2026. This new console is reportedly in the works at the moment, with rumors hinting at the upcoming Xbox hardware being in late stage development. If this is true, the expected release timeline puts Microsoft on a roughly seven year update cycle, which is in line with the previous generation.

Hardware

Under the hood, the biggest change will likely be a jump to much more powerful custom AMD silicon. Multiple sources point to an upgraded Magnus APU, which pairs Zen 6 CPU cores with RDNA 5 graphics hardware. This powerful combination might allow the next Xbox to hit 4K/120fps performance and advanced ray tracing while also enabling PC level features like AI acceleration and broader driver support.

Rumors even suggest a beefier memory subsystem (wider bus and GDDR7 in some leaks), which would let Microsoft push higher fidelity assets and better frame-rate targets. So simply put, the latest Xbox console would offer a major jump in performance over the Xbox Series X.

It’s more than just one console

Microsoft has been clear with its plans for the Xbox name. The focus isn’t on making new hardware/consoles, but also expanding cloud gaming, the Xbox Game Pass gaming library and its accessibility, and even via strategic collaborations. An example of such a partnership is with ASUS, which recently released the ROG Xbox Ally series of gaming handhelds that launched with special optimizations that made it closest to an actual portable Xbox console.

Soon, these hardware partners might also launch TV units and other Xbox Ally-like consoles, which would help bring “Windows in the living room” vision. It remains to be seen how the next Xbox fits in all of this, but it will likely arrive as a “true” Xbox experience, blending PC gaming level hardware with a TV console experience.

Software & ecosystem changes

Perhaps the most strategic shift is software openness. Microsoft has publicly signaled its next Xbox won’t be locked to a single store. Rather, games could be sold across multiple storefronts, with another focus on backward compatibility with the entire Xbox library.

Combine that with Game Pass, cloud streaming ambitions and tighter Windows integration, and the next Xbox is less a single product and more a distributed gaming ecosystem. For consumers, this could mean more choice about where to buy games and smoother cross-device play, assuming platform partners and publishers cooperate.

What this means for gamers

But perhaps most intriguing is Sony’s quiet collaboration with growing support for Steam Deck. As of right now, there are already multiple PlayStation titles on the Steam Deck, with Sony also bringing custom Steam Deck boot animations for its popular games like The Last of US. This rumor highlights how Sony doesn’t look at Valve or Microsoft as competitors; rather, it makes the Steam Deck its unofficial PlayStation handheld.

The podcast further discusses Valve’s first home console, which could debut alongside the Steam Deck 2. SteamOS continues to grow in popularity compared to Windows powered handhelds. So it could just be a matter of time before Valve becomes the next big player in the console segment.

The Japanese console giant has been tight-lipped about its next-generation console, but leaks haven’t stopped peering into it. The Nintendo Switch 2 logo has also been leaked recently, which looks very similar to the last one.

Thanks to 91mobiles and OnLeaks, we now have high-quality renders and a 360-degree video of the highly awaited Nintendo Switch 2. The much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 with a larger screen, bigger controllers, and several design tweaks seems to take things to the next level.

What the renders reveal

Leaks have shown an in-depth view of the new design. On top, it features a power button and volume rocker on the right, with the game card slot located on the left. This hints at the fact that Switch 2 is probably going to have backward compatibility with titles that exist in the existing Switch – a real gamer’s delight if he has an enormous library.

A 3.5mm headphone jack also makes an appearance, perfect for users who still cherish their wired headphones. Right next to it is a USB Type-C port, expected to handle charging. This addresses a common complaint with the current Switch design, which makes charging cumbersome, especially in tabletop mode. There’s also a mysterious sensor on the top—possibly an ambient light sensor.

The console has a minimalist bottom that is a central dock with guide pins on both sides and has two speaker openings on both sides of the setup. On the back of the device is a strong ‘U’ kickstand, much improved over the Switch OLED’s kickstand that itself was an improvement over the flimsy stand on the original Switch.

The Joy-Cons retain the same layout as before; there are the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons, D-Pad, and sticks. But they are slightly bigger and now carry a mystical new button above the ‘Home’ button on the right Joy-Con. On the back side, there’s a new trigger button beside ‘ZL’ and ‘ZR’ to detach the Joy-Cons. The tight placement of these buttons could be an issue during gameplay.

A much larger display

According to OnLeaks, the Nintendo Switch 2 will pack a significantly larger 8.4-inch display. For context, the current Switch OLED has a 7-inch screen, and the standard Switch comes in at 6.2 inches. This is probably going to enhance the handheld gaming experience even further.

Although the Xbox side did not meet expectations, the real surprise came from Nintendo. The Switch, introduced in 2017, exceeded everyone’s expectations and has become the popular handheld console that has outsold the PS4. Here are the details…

The Nintendo Switch has outsold the PS4, but Nintendo sees tougher times ahead

According to the latest reports, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 122.5 million units as of the end of 2022, surpassing both the legendary Game Boy and Sony’s PlayStation 4 to become the third best-selling gaming console of all time. However, looking at the last nine months of 2022, we see that sales have dropped to 14.91 million from 18.95 million during the same period the previous year. Additionally, total revenue has declined by 5.6%.

There are two basic reasons for this. Firstly, game sales fell by 4% despite the release of the new Pokemon Scarlet/Violet titles (which totaled an impressive 20.61 million units), unable to offset the decline. The second reason is the inability to supply enough products in the market due to the global chip crisis. Although the number of products has increased with the disappearance of the pandemic from our lives, this time demand has decreased.

Although the company has lowered its expectations for next year, exclusive games could change that. Titles like Zelda, which has a massive fanbase, can drive much higher console sales on its own. Another highlight in the company’s report is the preference of users. While sales of the Nintendo Switch with an OLED screen increased, there was a decrease in sales of the standard and lite models. This indicates that users want better and more powerful hardware.

It’s worth remembering that the Nintendo Switch just surpassing the PlayStation 4 in sales does not mean it is taking the lead in the eighth-generation console wars. Sony and Microsoft have prioritized the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while Nintendo has not yet shown a new console that it is working on and continues to sell the device, which was released in 2017, with minor improvements. For this reason, it is possible to say that the PS4, which has sold approximately 120 million units, is still the winner!

Nintendo said last year that the transition to its next console is “a major focus for us,” and it could start becoming more urgent soon. It’ll be interesting to see if the Switch can hang around long enough to become the best selling console of all time, but Nintendo will have to sell around 33 million more units to surpass the PlayStation 2.

When they previously talked about the Linux-based Ayaneo OS, they said “Ayaneo team loves games and game consoles as well. In the process of creating the best Windows handheld in the world, they found that the existing operating system in the new form of PC handheld still has many poor experiences, and even some problems that we can’t be solved.

“In order to allow everyone to enjoy the game and the handheld hardware better, Ayaneo has launched the Ayaneo OS, which is based on the Linux system and developed exclusively.” The company also mentioned that it will be using Proton, a compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux.

Recently, Ayaneo successfully completed an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign for the Ayaneo 2 and GEEK models, both of which feature an AMD Ryzen 6800U. The campaign garnered $3,157,147 in donations and 2,680 donations, and is currently in a pre-order-like demand phase.

While Ayaneo’s crowdfunding campaign has been successful, it’s still only a fraction of Steam Deck sales, which have surpassed 1 million units sold as of October 2022. It will be interesting to see how Ayaneo’s Linux-based operating system and gaming handheld fare in a highly competitive market market.

GPD, the Shenzhen-based consumer electronics tech startup, known for its best-selling gaming handhelds such as its GPD Win 3, and GPD XP, has announced today the GPD Win 4 – the brand’s next-generation Windows gaming handheld that features AMD’s high-end Ryzen 7 6800U CPU and up to 2 TB of NVME SSD storage.

The GPD Win 4 is a Windows gaming handheld console by GPD that runs on GPD’s Playnite UI skin on top of Windows, to allow for better navigation across the smaller form factor. It has a 6-inch Full HD display that has an aspect ratio of 16:9 with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Though GPD didn’t disclose the refresh rate or the type of display (OLED or IPS LCD) used on the console.

As for the performance of the GPD Win 4, this small gaming monster is packing AMD’s Ryzen 7 6800U under the hood, alongside a Radeon 680M integrated GPU onboard for better graphics when gaming on the go. And if the onboard dedicated graphics are not sufficient enough, users will be glad to hear the GPD Win 4 also includes eGPU support on its USB C ports as well, for those who wanted to play more graphic-intensive games on the device with their dedicated graphics card.

The GPD Win 4 will be available with either 16 GB or 32 GB of LPDDR5 (6400 MT/s) RAM, and for onboard storage, buyers can choose either the 1 TB or 2 TB PCIe NVME SSD option.

Coming to the build, the GPD Win 4 weighs around 500 grams, and is built with a matte polycarbonate chassis. The handheld’s overall design seems to take inspiration from Sony’s Playstation Portable (PSP) with its uniquely curved sides along with similar-looking control buttons as well. The console also has a built-in keyboard underneath once you slide the display up, and if physical buttons do not fit your gaming tastes, then the GPD Win 4 also features GPD “optical finger navigation”, which is essentially a touchpad designed for smaller handheld devices like these.

The device will feature 2 USB ports, one on top and one on the bottom, as well as both WiFi and 4G LTE Internet support to allow users to game anywhere at any time. 

The GPD Win 4 will be available for sale in limited quantities starting October 2022, and the device will be available in either Silver White or Black color options for interested buyers to choose from.
