Most studios either quietly use generative AI or avoid the topic altogether, but one small team has decided to do the exact opposite. The developers behind Codex Mortis say their new bullet hell game was built entirely with AI — no human-drawn art, no hand-written code, no traditional music production. And now there’s a free Steam demo so anyone can check it out.

According to the Steam listing, “all code is AI vibe codes, also arts, sounds, music, texts.” It’s a rare case where a developer is not only open about using AI but is essentially making it the whole pitch. Even the character faces shown in the trailer appear to be AI-modified selfies of the team members, dropped onto undead wizard bodies.

The gameplay is pretty familiar, but with necromancy. The full game is supposed to support solo and co-op play. The early impressions are mixed but curious. The graphics in the actual build look a bit rough compared to the slicker YouTube trailer, and some players say the UI feels clumsy on a controller. But the basic loop — combining spells, surviving the onslaught, raising minions — works well enough to show that a fully machine-generated game can at least run and be played.

Whether it’s fun is another matter entirely. The studio seems to know this and is leaning harder into the 100% AI-made angle than anything else, hoping the transparency will draw interest instead of backlash. Some players are treating it like an experimental art project; others see it as another example of AI creeping into game development in ways that replace human artists.

Codex Mortis isn’t shying away from the debate. With a planned low price for the final release, the team is banking on curiosity and affordability winning people over.

If nothing else, the free demo gives everyone a chance to decide for themselves whether a game built wholly from AI tools can still have personality — or if it ends up feeling exactly like you’d expect from something made entirely by algorithms.

The update for LEGO Fornite arrives alongside the release of Fortnite update 28.10 on various platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Android, and Nintendo Switch. The update brings new content, bug fixes, quality-of-life updates, and LEGO styles.

However, LEGO Fortnite fans can expect server downtime from 9 a.m. to around 11 a.m. GMT on January 23 as the update is implemented. The update introduces LEGO versions of Fortnite Icon skins and includes bug fixes, gameplay features, items, and balance changes. Vita3K is a PlayStation Vita emulator that was originally released for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The developers behind the project have now made it possible to play some PS Vita games on Android. The emulator is still considered experimental and fewer than half of the tested games are considered “playable”. Meaning that the Android version may still have some bugs and limitations compared to the versions for other platforms. Therefore, it’s important to check out the release notes before getting started.

To use Vita3K on an Android device, you’ll need a device that’s newer and more powerful than an actual PS Vita. The emulator requires a 64-bit ARM processor running Android 7 or later with support for Vulkan 1.0 graphics. All devices running Android 7 or later should meet these requirements. While the PS Vita was discontinued by Sony a few years ago, used units can still be found for around $130 and up on eBay. Using an emulator to play Vita games on your phone may be a more practical option, even though the emulator is still in its experimental stages.

In order to play games, you’ll need to obtain PS Vita games. If you don’t want to resort to piracy, the Vita3K team suggests using open-source tools for dumping games from cartridges you already own, or playing homebrew games. Vita3K Android is a new and exciting development for fans of PS Vita games, offering a way to play some of their favorite games on their Android devices. However, it is still in its experimental stage, so users should be aware of the limitations and bugs that may come with using the emulator.

Although the Xbox side did not meet expectations, the real surprise came from Nintendo. The Switch, introduced in 2017, exceeded everyone’s expectations and has become the popular handheld console that has outsold the PS4. Here are the details…

The Nintendo Switch has outsold the PS4, but Nintendo sees tougher times ahead

According to the latest reports, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 122.5 million units as of the end of 2022, surpassing both the legendary Game Boy and Sony’s PlayStation 4 to become the third best-selling gaming console of all time. However, looking at the last nine months of 2022, we see that sales have dropped to 14.91 million from 18.95 million during the same period the previous year. Additionally, total revenue has declined by 5.6%.

There are two basic reasons for this. Firstly, game sales fell by 4% despite the release of the new Pokemon Scarlet/Violet titles (which totaled an impressive 20.61 million units), unable to offset the decline. The second reason is the inability to supply enough products in the market due to the global chip crisis. Although the number of products has increased with the disappearance of the pandemic from our lives, this time demand has decreased.

Although the company has lowered its expectations for next year, exclusive games could change that. Titles like Zelda, which has a massive fanbase, can drive much higher console sales on its own. Another highlight in the company’s report is the preference of users. While sales of the Nintendo Switch with an OLED screen increased, there was a decrease in sales of the standard and lite models. This indicates that users want better and more powerful hardware.

It’s worth remembering that the Nintendo Switch just surpassing the PlayStation 4 in sales does not mean it is taking the lead in the eighth-generation console wars. Sony and Microsoft have prioritized the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while Nintendo has not yet shown a new console that it is working on and continues to sell the device, which was released in 2017, with minor improvements. For this reason, it is possible to say that the PS4, which has sold approximately 120 million units, is still the winner!

Nintendo said last year that the transition to its next console is “a major focus for us,” and it could start becoming more urgent soon. It’ll be interesting to see if the Switch can hang around long enough to become the best selling console of all time, but Nintendo will have to sell around 33 million more units to surpass the PlayStation 2.

Sony has revealed that the company plans to expand its Chinese game incubation business, which is also known as China Hero Project. The company is planning to increase investment for incubating new games and developers in the region.

As per the report coming from Reuters, Sony is planning to invest one million yuan or about $140,000 in each China-developed game that the company incubates through its programs.

The development of increasing efforts by Sony in the Chinese market comes at a time when Microsoft is actively pursuing Chinese developers, and Reuters claims that Sony plans to go head-to-head with the Xbox maker in the country.

Previously, games incubated by Sony under China Hero Project received financial and development support, but the games weren’t published by the company. But now, as per the report, Sony aims to support Chinese games through PlayStation Studios and is aiming to publish games, starting with Lost Soul Aside.

So far, the company has supported 17 small-scale games alongside striking successful deals like Genshin Impact. By investing heavily in incubating new games and developers, the company plans to achieve its goal of selling twice the PS5 models in China than the PS4 models.

After missing out on making Genshin Impact an Xbox exclusive, Microsoft has reportedly been trying to scout for more Chinese video game developers to work with and is looking to entice them with large Xbox Game Pass offers.

Sony has announced that the company has signed an agreement for the acquisition of Haven Studios but financial details about the transaction remain unknown.

The development comes after Haven Studios and Sony had been in a partnership for over a year and after the acquisition, Haven will be one of the first for PlayStation Studios.

Haven Studios was founded by Jade Raymond, co-creator of Assassin’s Creed and former head of Stadia Games and Entertainment. This new gaming studio was founded by Raymond in March last year.

Although it was an independent company, it was backed by Sony, and the first project was said to be a new IP for PlayStation. Details about that first game remain undisclosed but Jade Raymond says that the team has “made amazing progress.”

Commenting about the acquisition, Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, said: “We began working with Jade and her team in early 2021 when they were on the brink of announcing the formation of Haven Studios. From their first pitch, we were inspired by Haven’s vision for creating a modern multiplayer experience that brings gamers together in positive and meaningful ways. We were confident in their creative and technical expertise to deliver on such an ambitious project and were thrilled to invest in their journey developing a new, original IP for PlayStation.”

The acquisition of Haven Studios also means that Sony now has a team of game developers in Canada. For those who are unaware, Canada is one of the biggest producers of AAA games in the world and most major games companies have a presence in the country.

A few months ago, media streaming giant Netflix had announced its own gaming service named Netflix Mobile Gaming which made its debut in Poland with two Stranger Things mobile games. Now, the service is expanding to other regions as well. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

How Does It Work?

The Netflix application can be used to find the games as an individual download and confirm the Netflix account credentials before loading them. Some of the games need an active internet connection to keep playing but there are some games that work completely offline. However, in such a case, you will still need an internal connection to confirm your Netflix credentials at the time of loading the game.

What About Shared Accounts?

Interestingly, this new game feature for the Netflix app also supports multiple and simultaneous logins, depending on your account type as it basically works the same as the streaming service. This means that everyone can log in and play games simultaneously until an account’s maximum devices limit is reached. Once the maximum devices limit hits, you will get an alert for the same, similar to how it works for video streaming.

Which Games Are Available?

The games coming to the platform include two smartphone-friendly games based on Stranger Things services and three arcade-y tap-action games. These titles were all previously launched on smartphone storefronts. However, as a part of Netflix Games, they have been updated to work without any upfront costs or hidden microtransactions.

Do note that you will need an active Netflix subscription to play games and the company notes that there are no ads, additional fees, or microtransactions. As noted, the service is currently limited to Android devices only but the company says that iOS support will be rolled out in the coming months.

Recently, Apple increased the price of Apps, Games on the App Store in India, Indonesia. Now, it is turning the attention towards China. Despite Apple fixing deadlines and extending them, publishers didn’t submit a license on time. This has led to the company removing thousands of Apps including Games from its China App Store.

According to a Reuters report, Apple has removed 39,000 games from the China App Store. This move comes as the company’s already-extended deadline for obtaining a License comes to an end today. For the unware, Apple issued guidelines to publishers for submitting a License number from the Chinese Government.

This is reportedly for allowing users to do in-app purchases on the App Store. The deadline, which initially was on June-end got extended to Dec. 31 which is today. Anyway, apart from games, Apple has also removed other apps bringing the overall tally to more than 46,000.

Besides, some of the biggies like Ubisoft‘s Assassin’s Creed Identity and NBA 2K20 also seem to have affected in this sweep. Previously, the company came under a lot of criticism for allowing a crowdsourced police activity App on its App store amidst Hong Kong Protests in 2019. More drama unfolded during the initial days of the US – WeChat ban controversy as well. Anyway, analysts say that such stringent measures would make overseas developers look for alternate ad-supported platforms which won’t be good news for the Cupertino giant.

The Indian government had banned 59 Chinese applications in the country in June this year and then added 48 more apps to the list. Just a couple of days ago, India banned 118 more apps, including the popular PUBG Mobile game.

Although the reason behind banning Chinese apps in the market seems to be political, the Indian government is citing privacy and security as the reason behind banning China-origin applications in the country.

Now, to ensure continued availability of its applications, Tencent Holdings said that it would engage with the Indian authorities, reports Reuters. It has also added that the company takes the protection of user privacy and data seriously.

For those who are unaware, Tencent is the parent company behind the widely popular PUBG and PUBG Mobile game. Not only in India, but PUBG is also one of the most popular Battle Royale games around the globe.

Sony is apparently making planning on buying Leyou Technologies, a major stakeholder in developer Digital Extremes that made Warframe. The company wants to acquire the Chinese game holding firm that has a number of high profile IPs and developers.

According to Bloomberg, the massive acquisition will have Sony acquire multiple popular free to play titles which include, the massively successful Warframe and upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO. Leyou Technologies is valued at 1 Billion US Dollars, but that isn’t something that can deter industry giant Sony. The Japanese company earned over 18 Billion US Dollars through PlayStation gaming in 2019 alone.

A few years ago, Nintendo began making games for mobile phones too. However, the company has not recorded as much success as it has on its consoles. The latest news says Nintendo may finally stop making games for mobile phones.

Bloomberg reports that the president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, said back in May that “We are not necessarily looking to continue releasing many new applications for the mobile market.”. That statement should not be a big surprise seeing as the company didn’t see a boost in sales as competitors did during the February to May COVID-19 lockdown period.

Over the last couple of years, Nintendo has released games such as Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour, Dr. Mario World. Unfortunately, none of these games have been a big hit compared to other mobile games like PUBG.

Nintendo uses different pricing systems for its games which include subscriptions for Mario Kart Tour and a one-time purchase for Super Mario Run. This is different from the approach other games use which is a freemium model with upgrades for characters and weapons that cost money. Nintendo also believes that its games work better with controllers it designed rather than touchscreen-only devices.

It is reported that Nintendo will turn its focus to already released games rather than release new ones for the current fiscal year.

Tetris is one of the world’s most iconic games. It is both nostalgic due to its very early conception in the gaming industry and classic, seeing as the series still has a sizeable player base. However, EA (Electronic Arts) is shutting down the service for Tetris’ two mobile ports, namely Tetris and Tetris Blitz.

The announcement for the end of both mobile games was shared on Twitter through Tetris Blitz’s official account. It mentioned both games will be taken down by 21st April 2020. The tweet also arrived with a link for any users with any concerns or grievances regarding this decision from the known gaming publisher, EA.

As of right now, it is unclear if the studio plans to end the Tetris series altogether since its deal with Tetris has expired. Hence, we might not see more from entries in the IP being launched from EA. However, N3TWORK, a game developer, has already signed a multi-year agreement with Tetris last year. This means that the game is not entirely dead and still lives on but under a different developer.

N3TWORK is currently working on a couple of different versions of Tetris for the mobile platform and already has a game available for both Android and iOS, which is available for free. Furthermore, the game which is out now is a remake of the original. Thus, it just has one classic mode with a few different themes, unlike the one from EA with multiple modes and options.

Notably, in-app purchases and microtransactions which EA is infamous for, will not be making an appearance again in N3TWORK’s version of the game but will have users pay $4.99 to remove ads. Lastly, another version of Tetris from N3TWORK plans to bring the 100 player Battle Royale genre to the nostalgic game series in the form of a new game. So, for those that wish to play more than just the classic mode can check out Tetris Royale, which is currently in the Beta program and will be released by June 2020.

OnePlus recently launched its latest T-lineup smartphones, a successor to its flagship smartphones launched earlier this year. The highlight of the OnePlus 7T series smartphones remains the 90Hz refresh rate display.

Now, the company has revealed a list of games that are compatible with this 90Hz refresh rate. This comes just hours after the official launch of the flagship smartphones in the company’s home market China.

The company has confirmed that “Peace Elite”, “Ace Warrior”, “Fort Frontline”, “QQ Speeding”, “Crossing the FireWire”, “Quantum Special Attack”, “New Swordsman” and seven other games come with support for 90Hz refresh rate display.

Coming to the specifications of the OnePlus 7T, it features a 6.55-inch display which is slightly bigger than that of the OnePlus 7. It is a 90Hz Fluid AMOLED Display with HDR10+ (YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix), a 2400 x 1080 resolution, and 3D Corning Gorilla Glass on top.

On the 1st of October, Activision Blizzard Inc released the mobile version of its immensely popular Call of Duty franchise. Clearly, the nostalgia factor has worked in favour of the company as the game has been downloaded over 100 million times within just one week of its launch.

In contrast, the download count of PUBG, Fortnite, and Apex Legends which are some of the most popular battle-royale games was 26.3 million, 22.5 million and 25 million respectively in their first week of release.

Randy Nelson, who is the head of mobile insights at Sensor Tower said that “This is by far the largest mobile game launch in history in terms of the player base that’s been built in the first week,”. Sensor Tower is an organic user acquisition service that helps app developers grow their audience using App Store Optimisation and app marketplace intelligence.

While the original Call of Duty for consoles was a paid game, its mobile version is free to download and play but users can make in-app purchases to acquire visually appealing elements like skins for weapons and distinctive clothes.

The mobile version of Call of Duty is developed by the Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings LTD. The same company also holds a stake in PUBG mobile’s developer, Bluehole and Fortnite’s developer, Epic Games. Both these games can be credited for popularising the battle-royal format, in which a large number of players fight together to defeat the enemy and come out on top.

The 100 million download figure is the combined total of downloads on Android’s Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Notably, 17% of all the downloads were done users hailing from the United States which was followed by Indian users, where PUBG has a massive player base. The game is yet to launch in China where it is expected to see a positive response as well.

The world’s largest gaming market is getting a blockchain game – Let’s Hunt Monsters from Tencent Holdings. The Shenzen based game development company known for various popular titles such a PUBG, League of Legends, Fortnite is here with a new augmented reality (AR) game.

The new title merges the concepts of both Pokémon Go and CryptoKitties. During gameplay, a user can catch hundreds of street monsters using the native Mapping services in China. Moreover, an option to trade digital kittens using blockchain is another aspect of the game. Let’s Hunt Monsters is a proper blend of both the popular game titles with Chinese nativeness.

Tencent’s new AR game is already popular in China. Since its launch last week on iOS store, it’s trending as the most downloaded free game beating PUBG Mobile and other popular titles.

Users can play it while exploring real-world locations and capturing virtual creatures. Unlike Pikachus in Pokémon Go, the mythological beasts like dragons and phoenixes are the monsters in the Let’s Hunt Monsters. Using Tencent’s blockchain platform, users can exchange or trade digital kittens during the gameplay.

The new game can act as a super saver for Tencent Holdings for revenue generation. Whereas monetisation for games like PUBG and Fortnite is under government scanner, the company have to wait for the approvals. In China, various brick-and-mortar stores are also offering coupon codes and discounts for Let’s Hunt Monsters.

Pokémon Go is a popular AR mobile game with an estimated US$2.5 billion in total revenue. Due to Google Maps API usage in the game, it was banned in mainland China citing security risks. Meanwhile, CryptoKitties is a blockchain game aimed to trade cartoon kittens.
