Huawei Technologies has recently hired former head of BBC news programmes Gavin Allen as its new new “Executive Editor in Chief.” This appointment is indicative of the company’s push to hire more foreign talent, despite facing frictions with in the UK.

According to Yahoo News, Allen had previously led the BBC news output for seven years. But now, the official had revealed his new position by updating his LinkedIn profile earlier this week. His profile’s banner image now showcases the Chinese tech giant’s logo with the new title of “Executive Editor in Chief, Huawei Technologies.” Allen stated that “I’m delighted to be joining the global tech company today as their Executive Editor in Chief.”

He further added that “It feels meant-to-be after a two decades long China journey. I’ve studied Chinese history, am – falteringly – learning Mandarin and my wonderful eldest daughter was born in Guangxi. Now hugely proud to be part of a world class ICT organization which truly values collaboration and innovation: a creative force for good.” While the company confirmed the new hire, it refrained from commenting further on the matter.

Notably, the move arrives after Huawei’s Founder Ren Zhengfei had recently stated that the brand would raise its focus on hiring foreign talent, especially from the US. The shift also signifies its expansion in overseas research and development programmes, as per his speech earlier this week.

Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi, has just shared a new recruitment advertisement on his official Weibo account, a Chinese microblogging website. In this ad, the official has basically revealed that the company is hiring experts in the autonomous driving field for its own automobile unit.

Back in March, the Chinese tech giant had announced that it would enter into the Smart Electric Vehicle business, with an initial investment of around 10 billion Yuan (roughly 1.5 billion US Dollars). Now, the executive has officially shared a recruitment add calling for 500 technical experts to join the “Xiaomi Autonomous Driving Department.” The social media post states that it is looking for 500 experts to create its own proprietary self driving technology for its smart cars.

Furthermore, the company has increased its recruitment efforts and openings for its Auto department in various fields as well. This includes data platforms, millimeter wave algorithms, a control system for the vehicle and its internal components, development tools, front end platform development, embedded software, imaging/perception, high accuracy map, among many others. Recently, the WeChat account, a Chinese social media platform, of HiSilicon Recruitment shared the news that the Huawei chip unit will be starting a new wave of recruitment that will start next year.

As per the announcement, the Chinese tech giant’s chip designing unit will be recruiting students that have graduated from domestic colleges ad universities in China. This recruitment period is between the 1st of January 2022 till the end of the year, which is December 31st. The hiring would be aimed at both bachelors and masters students that are of Chinese nationality. Furthermore, this recruitment drive will be for various parts of its operations.

This includes chipsets, hardware, research, software, testing, and systems. HiSilicon also announced that the jobs will be situated in multiple locations in China including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Wuhan, Xi’an, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Suzhou. Previously, we had reported on Huawei HiSilicon building a new chip factory in Wuhan to offset the US sanctions the company faced.

Furthermore, the brand also announced that it would retain its workforce in its chip unit, HiSilicon, and would even push for advanced semiconductor technology as well. In other words, this recruitment plan might be a part of its future plans to become self sufficient, especially in regards to its supply chain, while also seeking to bring in local talents as well. Airbnb, the known home rental based firm, has recently hired the former Apple designer Jony Ive and his firm. It is a multi year partnership, which will have the firm design new Airbnb products.

For those unaware, Jony Ive was a close creative collaborator with Apple founder Steve Jobs. Ive has spent nearly three decades with the Cupertino based giant and has to lead the design behind the memorable Apple products like the candy colored iMacs and even helped in the company coming back from its near death in the 1990s and had left Apple back in 2019.

In a recent blog post from Airbnb Chief Executive Brian Chesky, the senior official announced that Jony Ive will also be helping the company’s internal design team. Earlier this week, Airbnb’s Chief Design Officer, Alex Schleifer, would be moving to a more part time role, while the company would look into a permanent replacement, as per a source close to the matter.

Jony Ive and his firm, LoveFrom, will be working with Airbnb in an effort to raise around 3 billion US Dollars in its upcoming initial Publix offering, according to sources. Airbnb is also expected to be one of the largest and most anticipated listings in the US stock market for 2020, which has already been a big year for IPOs.

Adam Zheng, the former CEO of ZTE mobile division might be joining Xiaomi as the Vice President of the company and the Mobile Phone Department President, according to a new report.

Adam Zheng resigned from ZTE back in 2017 and has 20 years’ worth of experience in the industry. His portfolio includes notable roles in various top brands including Sharp, ZTE, and more. Now, a new rumor has suggested that he has also been appointed by Xiaomi to lead the research and development and production of its smartphone offerings.

Notably, Zheng had founded Huixin Communication, a joint venture between the local government and scientific groups. Thus, the move of hiring a former ZTE mobile division CEO could be a part of the same plan.
