Although Huawei phones are not as popular as they used to be, the company still isn’t giving up and had continued to launch new phones in the market. Recently, the brand unveiled the P60 series in China, which includes three good-looking smartphones. Later, the company also introduced the mid-range Enjoy 60X. Now, rumors are rife that the Chinese brand is working on a new phone that looks a lot like the aging Huawei P40 Pro.

Huawei P40 Pro aesthetics may return

As per a Chinese tipster, Huawei is working on a new smartphone with a camera module similar to the P40 Pro (Via Huawei Central). To remind you, the Huawei P40 Pro is one of the brand’s first flagships to debut after the US trade ban. It boasted a notable design and camera setup but lacked 5G connectivity and Google apps.

The renders shared by the tipster show the upcoming smartphone with the same minimalistic design that we saw on the P40 Pro. You can see the curved screen and the wave-shaped aluminum frame instantly. However, unlike the 2020 flagship which gets a pill-shaped cutout on the display, the unnamed Huawei phone features a punch hole in the top center.

There’s a rectangular bump with rounded edges on the back panel. However, the camera arrangement replicates the design of the Huawei P40 Pro, with a vertical organization and a periscope telephoto zoom. Notably, the camera system uses only three lenses, and the right side of the bump houses the LED flash, as well as labels for XMAGE and other functions. Currently, the specifications and the marketing name of the smartphone is not known. We expect to learn more details in the coming days.

How the storage upgrade service works is quite simple. Let’s say a user has a Huawei P40 in a 128GB storage configuration. After 1 year, they have realised that 128GB is not enough to store all their apps and media on their phone, and they want to upgrade to 256GB storage without changing their phone. The user can simply visit their nearest Huawei Service Centre in China and pay 559 RMB(USD 88) to get their Huawei P40 128GB upgraded to a 256GB configuration.

Do note that quotations for each device varies, so you may need to visit Huawei’s China website first to get a quotation for your internal storage upgrade before you visit a Huawei Service Centre in China.

For under USD 100, the service also ensures that all of the users data will be transferred over to the new storage drive. This service takes up to an average of 10 days to complete and is currently only available in Chinese markets, not available worldwide.

The service serves as a convenience to those who feel like they are comfortable with their current Huawei phone but wished that their phone supported more storage. Indirectly, the end-user can also save themselves the hassle of searching for a new phone and splurging top dollar to get the phones they want, when they could comfortably settle back on an older flagship that they currently have.

As of recent, Huawei Senior Product Manager, Mr. Wang Yonggang, who is in charge of the development of the Huawei flagship P series lineup of smartphones, broke out the great news that the Huawei P series flagships have exceeded 100 million sales globally(including in China) in total since it launched the Huawei Ascend P1 almost 10 years ago. Through a blog post in the Huawei Xinsheng online forum (an online community for Huawei users in China), he shared the many milestones that Huawei has achieved in the smartphone market throughout the 10 years since Huawei launched its first flagship, the Huawei Ascend P1, back in January 2012.

Huawei first started development for the Huawei Ascend P1 as early as in the summer of 2011, where Huawei wanted to put out its first competitive flagship smartphone to the market to make a name for itself in the industry. Mr. Wang Yonggang recalled that Huawei called in their research team from Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an to fly over to Shenzhen to help develop the Huawei Ascend P1 together with their Shenzhen team. 

After many months of market research and prototypes, they finally launched the Huawei Ascend P1 in January 2012 with a 4.3 AMOLED display, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8MP BSI rear camera in a lightweight and 7.6mm unibody, at a flagship price of RMB 2,999(471 USD) at the time. 

Although the Huawei Ascend P1 was not a bestseller by any metrics, it was Huawei’s first step to transition away from a B2B (Business to Business) company to a B2C(Business to Consumer) company with its first-ever flagship smartphone for the Chinese public.

Huawei’s next flagship, the Huawei Ascend P2, however, was not released in China and was instead released outside of China in markets such as the European and Japanese markets in 2013. This was due in part that the Huawei Ascend P2 was equipped with 4G which China did not have a proper rollout till 2014, and therefore Huawei decided to release it in the global market instead. The Huawei Ascend P2 was also the first Huawei flagship to be equipped with Huawei’s in-house Kirin SOC.

The next milestone for Huawei was the Huawei Ascend P6 with its show-stopping ID design, as the P6 was the world’s thinnest smartphone at its release, with a thickness of only 6.18mm. Looking back, it was the Huawei flagship that defined the premium design language of Huawei P series flagships for many years to come. 

The next big leap was the Huawei P9 with its dual rear camera setup. The Huawei P9 was Huawei’s first phone to collaborate with famous camera imaging company Leica, and the P9’s rear camera was equipped with a normal color lens as well as a monochrome lens. The phone then captures the image with both lenses and uses computational software to provide the best-looking photo for the user.

The next generational leap in photography was with the Huawei P20 Pro with its industry-breaking triple camera setup consisting of a wide lens, a monochrome lens, and a telephoto lens for versatile photography. The Huawei P20 Pro also came with the popular colourway Twilight, which solidified Huawei’s flagship design philosophy in the premium market.

The Huawei P30 series adopted a new type of RYYB colored lens for better images, while the P40 series provided marginal upgrades, such as 10x optical zoom for the series.

The Huawei P50 series was quite a confusing flagship lineup until recently. But Huawei launched the P50 Pocket this week, the company’s first-ever clamshell flagship foldable, which proved that Huawei is bringing forward innovation to its P series flagships once again.

Chinese tech powerhouse Huawei has just commenced the rollout of its EMUI 11 stable for the Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and the Mate 30 Pro, respectively. A screenshot of the update was posted by the Turkish blog Huawei Ailesi. Though the changelog is in Turkish, we can see some of the notable updates, which are not too different from what has been available on the Beta version.

The most notable changes are certainly the subtle ones that further signify Huawei’s reliance on Android is a switch to Huawei’s Harmony OS. For example, in the boot-up screen, the EMUI splash display still comes up with the statement “Powered by Android” but has now jettisoned the green Android logo previously seen on start up.

The other important change is in the wording of the security patch level, which now gives the statement “Security patch level” thereby leaving out the word ‘Android’, as was the case previously.

Some new air gestures that were introduced on the Huawei Mate 40 series have now been extended to the P30 with the present update. Also, there is now a new EMUI theme called ‘Starry Night’ that is now available in all the stated models.

The update has version number 11.0.0.151 and will take up around 1.1 GB of memory space. With the subsisting US embargo on Huawei and its subsequent inability to secure a Google Services license, EMUI 11 is expected to be the last version of “Android” for this set of Huawei smartphones, and the first release of Harmony OS is set to be its successor. EMUI 11 lays the groundwork for some of the Huawei brand’s most popular smartphones to be updated to Huawei’s new Google-free OS.

DxOMark had recently unveiled a new ranking system for a different categories for smartphones. It is for the display, and now, the Huawei P40 Pro has also been reviewed and has received praises for its class leading motion control.

For those unaware, DxOMark generally reviews cameras and audio from smartphones, but has now diversified to include a display review as well. After a rigorous testing phase, the company gave the Huawei P40 Pro a score of 85 points on its display. This is among upper half of all its rankings and even edges out on last year’s Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max. While the device did receive the a relatively high score, it failed to reach the top 3 in DxOMark’s display ranking.

DxOMark stated that the score was largely affected by its readability performance where it was found too dark to read in both indoor and outdoor conditions comfortably. Although, the flagship from the Chinese tech giant did receive praises for its good overall color performance. Furthermore, where the Huawei P40 Pro stood out exceptionally was the motion sub category, which it was labelled as class leading.

The device was found to have excellent control of motion blur, and its video playback instantaneous. Another area where the smartphone struggled was with touch, and it also lost points for its obtrusive notch and poor handling of aliasing artifacts, which was particularly noticeable during gaming. In other words, the display was overall well received but had certain shortcomings that lowered its score. Despite this, it still managed to arrive in the top 5 spot of the DxOMark display rankings.

When it comes to phone development, manufacturers are known to experiment with different designs and colors before settling for the final one. The Huawei P40 Pro is no exception and a leak has now given us a look at a color variant that didn’t make the final cut.

The Huawei P40 Pro launched earlier this year in five color variants – Silver Frost, Blush Gold Deep Sea Blue, Ice White, and Black. These photos show that the phone could have come in Aurora Green too.

Photos of the prototype were posted on Weibo by a user that goes by @秃头普拉斯/Bald plus. The images are also filled with easter eggs from the popular animated movie Frozen which is also where the P40 Pro got its codename, Elsa, from. How many of these easter eggs can you spot?

The Huawei P40 Pro has a 6.58-inch 2640 x 1200 display with a double punch hole for dual front-facing cameras. The display is OLED, curved, and has a 90Hz refresh rate.

Under the hood is a Kirin 990 5G processor paired with 8GB of RAM and UFS 3.0 storage that starts at 128GB and goes up to 512GB. The P40 Pro has quad rear cameras – a 50MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP telephoto camera with a periscope lens that provides up to 5x optical zoom, a 40MP ultrawide angle camera, and a TOF 3D camera. In front are a 32MP primary camera and an infrared 3D camera for face unlock.

The Huawei P40 Pro flagship packs a 4200mAh battery with support for 40W fast wired charging, 27W fast wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, support for storage expansion via Huawei’s proprietary Nano Memory card slot, and an IP68 rating.

At the moment, details of a successor are scarce, no thanks to the current state of Huawei’s chip business.

Counterpoint Research has released a report for the Top-selling 5G smartphones worldwide for the month of September 2020. And China’s Huawei has the same number of devices as Samsung in the top-10 despite facing pressure from all sides.

The report primarily talks about the Top-10 5G smartphones and their market share Globally in September. To begin with, the list has about seven devices from Chinese OEMs like Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Honor. That’s a no-brainer considering the country’s 5G expansion is way ahead of the world. However, what is surprising is the presence of Huawei which has three devices in the list equalling rival Samsung.

Precisely, the Huawei P40 Pro, Nova 7, P40 occupy second, third, and fifth positions with 4.5%, 4.3%, and 3.8% market share respectively. This is a healthy trend for a company that is facing the heat elsewhere. In fact, the company recently led China where over 50% of 5G devices accounted for the total units sold in Q3. It’s ex-sister brand Honor also has an Honor 30S at the bottom with a 2.8% share.

Earlier this year, 5G was still available in only a few devices Globally and Hence, it didn’t penetrate deep into the markets. However, if you take China, it started the 5G rollout last October and is already pushing for 6G when other countries are struggling to adopt 5G better.

Besides, the report also shows budget smartphones like Oppo A72 5G, and Vivo Y70s 5G. This suggests that the 5G is entering into the affordable segment and breaking the notion of a “premium feature”. As the report says, this has become possible due to the mid-range 5G SoC of Qualcomm, MediaTek. That said, the report predicts that Apple will play a big role in commercializing 5G in North America, Europe after the iPhone 12 series.

Having said that, the list also has Samsung whose Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G sits at the top with a 5.0% market share. It has two more devices the Galaxy S20+ 5G, Note 20 5G with 4.0%, and 2.9% global share respectively.

In any case, this is a welcoming trend as there are more than 200 5G models currently compared to only 50 in Q1. Overall, the growth of the 5G models has increased by 300% in Q3 2020 compared to Q1. And as affordable 5G devices launch, and continue to grab attention, the contribution of top-10 devices in the total 5G sales has shrunk to 37% in September compared to 93% in Jan 2020.

Android OEMs have been launching 5G smartphones for a while now. But Apple introduced its first 5G handsets in the form of the iPhone 12 series only a few days back. Even though the standard iPhone 12 is expected to become the world’s best-selling 5G smartphone in terms of revenue in the second half (H2) of 2020 beating the Galaxy S20+ 5G.

Strategy Analytics, one of the leading analytical firms has released a report on top-selling 5G smartphones in terms of revenue for the first half (H1) of 2020. Unsurprisingly, Samsung leads the chart with three devices, followed by Huawei.

As you can see from the picture, first place is occupied by the Galaxy S20+ 5G while the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and Galaxy S20 5G have acquired second and third positions respectively. Whereas, the fourth and fifth places are captured by HUAWEI P40 Pro and HUAWEI Mate30 5G.

According to the report, the Galaxy S20+ 5G was popular in Western Europe, South Korea, North America, other regions. On the other hand, the two Huawei smartphones were widely popular in the company’s home country China.

Though the list does not include a single iPhone right now since the iPhone 11 series sold in H1 2020 is limited to 4G, the chart for H2 2020 is expected to be led by the regular iPhone 12. And possibly, other iPhone 12 models could also make it to the list.

Huawei officially announced EMUI 11 earlier this month at the HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2020. Initially, the beta builds of the company’s latest mobile software were limited to certain devices in China. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker has begun to recruit beta testers in Germany, Russia, Turkey, and the UK.

EMUI 11 is the ninth iteration of Huawei’s mobile operating system. Unfortunately, it is based on Android 10 due to the US ban. However, the company has promised to bring select Android 11 features to its devices before updating them to HarmonyOS later next year.

That said, the company has rolled out beta builds of the new version of its Android skin to a plethora of devices in its home country China. Thankfully, it has now started beta recruitment for global markets as well.

Currently, the registrations for the EMUI 11 Beta program is live in Germany, Russia, Turkey, and the UK for the following four smartphones.

• HUAWEI P40
• HUAWEI P40 Pro
• HUAWEI P40 Pro+
• HUAWEI Mate30 Pro

We expect Huawei to soon open global beta registrations for more handsets as well as tablets in the coming weeks. 

Anyway, it is worth noting that this initiative is purely for beta builds that may contain severe bugs. So we would recommend you to stay away from it if you don’t know what you are getting into. 

Further, although the Chinese telecom giant will begin to seed beta builds to selected users in a few days from now, the stable rollout may take time.

Xiaomi just does not want to release a waterproof phone. All the smartphones released by the company are not waterproof, including the Mi 10 Ultra, despite it is its most powerful flagship. With the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the Huawei P40 Pro+, you get the IP68 certification. Further, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra offers a stainless frame and the new Gorilla Glass Victus protection for the front and rear glass. It is definitely the best device in terms of build quality, and it even comes with a more beautiful design, at least according to my tastes. But the Huawei P40 Pro+ is still very nice with its ceramic body, and it is even the most compact phone of the trio.

Display

Huawei P40 Pro+ has the most disappointing display. In a world in which the most expensive flagships offer a 120 Hz refresh rate, Huawei P40 Pro+ is still 90 Hz. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has one of the most stunning displays out there, with a Quad HD+ resolution, a high brightness, outstanding colors, and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra still comes with a great panel including a 120 Hz refresh rate and HDR10+, but it can not compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in any way. Last but not least, note that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra supports the S Pen with a 9 ms response time.

Hardware/Software

The U.S. version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has the most advanced hardware department because it is fueled by the new Snapdragon 865+ mobile platform. But if we consider the EU version, with its Exynos 990 it falls behind the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra, powered by the Snapdragon 865 paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 internal storage. All the phones run Android 10 out of the box, but the Huawei P40 Pro+ does not have Google services out of the box.

Camera

It will be a tough fight between Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But on the paper, Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra looks more impressive. It has two 48 MP sensors including a periscope one with 120x zoom, dual OIS, a 12 MP telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, and a 20 MP ultrawide sensor. The most amazing camera setup ever. But Huawei P40 Pro+ is still one of the best camera phones out there and it may outperform its rivals in some scenarios. In each case, you get an amazing camera phone, so you should not worry so much.

Battery

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra has a 4500 mAh battery just like the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but it has to manage a smaller display with a lower resolution. That is why we believe it will last more on a single charge. Further, it has the fastest charging technology ever seen on a phone (up to 120W) as well as the fastest wireless charging technology (up to 50W). With the Huawei P40 Pro+, you get a smaller battery but also the fastest reverse wireless charging technology (27W).

Price

Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra carries a starting price of just €650/$766 in China, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Huawei P40 Pro+ start from more than €1300 globally and about €1000 and €1175 in China, respectively. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is a more complete device due to the S Pen support, waterproof design, amazing build quality, better display. But it lacks very fast charging speeds. Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra is an amazing camera phone and it has the highest value for money, while Huawei P40 Pro+ sits in the middle

But if we consider the EU version powered by the Exynos 990, then Oppo Find X2 Pro is a lot better with its Snapdragon 865 and 12 GB of RAM. Huawei P40 Pro+ is inferior to both with its Kirin 990 and 8 GB of RAM. Further, note that the Huawei P40 Pro+ does not include Google services in its global variant due to the U.S. ban.

Camera

Here it is a very hard battle since these devices are all top camera phones. Unfortunately, we still had no chance to test the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra thoroughly, so we can not give you a definitive verdict. On the paper, the Huawei P40 Pro+ looks like the most stunning one with its 10x optical zoom, dual OIS, and 50 MP main sensor. But Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Oppo Find X2 Pro are very close.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a bigger 4500 mAh battery, but it has to manage a bigger display with a higher resolution, compared to the Huawei P40 Pro+. So it is not certain that it will last more than the Huawei P40 Pro+ on a single charge. The Oppo Find X2 Pro is still close in terms of battery life and it has the fastest charging technology, while Huawei P40 Pro+ has the fastest wireless charging technology.

Price

Oppo Find X2 Pro is priced €1199/$1407 globally, Huawei P40 Pro+ starts from €1399/$1642, and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has a €1329/$1300 starting price. The S Pen makes the real difference here, that is why we think a lot of people would go for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Huawei P40 Pro+ has potentially better cameras but an inferior display, while Oppo Find X2 Pro has an amazing display and a very original design. Which one would you pick?

Earlier this week, Huawei released a new promotional video for its flagship P40 Pro. In the video, a rabbit can be seen showing off his photography skills with the high end smartphone.

The new promotional video basically revolves around how the rabbit used the Huawei P40 Pro’s camera to get out of dangerous positions from its natural predators. It can be seen taking a shot with trembling hands only to have the result be clear and without any blur. Similarly, the smartphone’s low light imagery was also showcased in the video. Animals like a fox, black panther, and an eagle can be seen asking the little rabbit for images of themselves.

Currently, the duo is receiving a new EMUI 10.1.0.140 update which brings improvements to the cameras.

The Huawei P40 Pro series is one of the best camera smartphones available in the market. But the company is still polishing the overall experience with new updates ever since the phone launched.

The latest EMUI 10.1.0.140 update weighing 515MB brings three new changes and all of them related to the cameras present on it. Two of them targeted at improving selfie pictures and videos, wheres the third one is said to enhance portrait shot under low light conditions.

Talking about selfies first, the new update adds ‘smart-eye tracking’ to the P40 Pro series. According to the changelog, it “quickly and intelligently track human eyes” while capturing selfie pictures as well as videos. As per XDA Developers’, this could be possible because of the IR depth sensor present alongside front-facing camera in the display cutout.

The second selfie-orientated feature is called ‘ring light compensation’ and as the name suggests it improves lighting conditions while recording selfie videos. Lastly, the latest EMUI update also brings Super Night portrait mode 3.0 to capture better portraits in low-light.

Though new Huawei smartphones are devoid of Google Mobile Services (GMS), the company continues to launch them in international markets. After making its debut in Europe and South East Asia, the Huawei P40 Pro is now heading towards Canada on July 10.

Huawei has confirmed to launch the P40 Pro in Canada in the second week of July. The regular P40 will be also arriving at a later date. The handset will be available at multiple carriers in Black and Silver Frost color options.

The limited-time launch offers include a free Huawei Watch GT 2 and 12 months subscription for 50GB Huawei cloud storage. Customers buying the phone can also participate in Huawei’s Next Image Awards to win up to $10,000.

As for specs, Huawei P40 Pro is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G SoC paired with up to 8GB and 256GB ROM. If needed, the storage can be further expanded up to 256GB via proprietary NM SD card.

The handset sports a 6.58-inch curved OLED display with 90Hz refresh rate, in-screen fingerprint reader, and a dual punch-hole for 32MP selfie camera and TOF 3D camera with IR for face unlock. 

Whereas, the rear quad-camera setup includes a 50MP primary RYYB sensor with OIS, a 12MP 5x periscope camera with OIS, a 40MP ultra-wide unit, and another TOF 3D sensor.

As for software, the phone runs EMUI 10.1 based on Android 10 with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and AppGallery for apps. Talking about build, the handset features glass sandwich design with an aluminium frame.

Last but not least, it gets its power from a 4,200 mAh battery with support for 40W fast wired charging, 27W fast wireless charging, and 27W fast reverse wireless charging.

Huawei launched the P40 flagship series smartphones in China in March this year and started selling the top-end variant in the lineup — Huawei P40 Pro+ earlier this month which comes with a penta-camera setup.

Now, a user has disassembled the back panel of the Huawei P40 Pro+ smartphone, showcasing the camera module. The video of the same, shared on Weibo, shows that almost a quarter part of the device is covered by the camera system.

It shows that the five-camera setup on the smartphone has a compact layout without any ball motor. It also has a suspended wire structure design which is composed of memory alloy. Thanks to this design, it guarantees zoom and anti-shake features along with the stability of the lens.

The smartphone features a 40MP f/1.8 Ultra Wide Cine Lens, an upgraded 50MP RYYB f/1.9 sensor with OIS, an 8MP f/2.4 Optical Super Periscope Telephoto camera, an 8MP f/2.4 Optical Periscope camera with OIS, and ToF depth sensor.

It is capable of capturing 10x optical zoom, 20x Hybrid zoom, and up to 100x digital zoom. On the front side, the device is equipped with a dual 32MP selfie shooter and an IR depth sensor, capable of capturing 4K selfie videos.

Top tier flagships became incredibly expensive but also incredibly powerful. Unlike 2019, this year, Samsung and Huawei launched three variants of their flagship lineups. The most expensive variants are the Huawei P40 Pro+ (which just hitten several European markets) and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Meanwhile, Motorola is back in the flagship segment after years of silence with its Motorola Edge+. All of these devices carry a price tag superior to €1,000, but are they worth the money asked? And which one should you prefer? We will try to answer these questions through the following specs comparison between Huawei P40 Pro+, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, and Motorola Edge+.

Design

If I had to make a choice by considering the design only, I would go for the Motorola Edge+. First of all, it has a higher screen-to-body ratio. It is more compact and its rear side is more elegant due to its smaller camera module. But several people may not agree with me because Huawei P40 Pro+ comes with more unique and premium materials (it is made of ceramic). Further, unlike the Motorola Edge+ which is just splash resistant, Huawei P40 Pro+ is waterproof with the IP68 certification. Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra should be sturdier thanks to its waterproof certification (IP68) and the Gorilla Glass 6 protection for both front and back glasses, but its dimensions are big, just like its camera module.

Display

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra provides the most impressive display: not only it is wider with its 6.9-inch diagonal, but it also supports a higher 120 Hz refresh rate, despite you can only use it by setting a Full HD+ resolution. The Dynamic AMOLED display of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has the HDR10+ certification and a high Quad HD+ resolution, while Huawei P40 Pro+ and Motorola Edge+ stop at Full HD+. Currently, we believe the only displays which can compete with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra in the Android world belong to OPPO Find X2 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Hardware/Software

The Motorola Edge+ has the most interesting hardware department because it is fueled by the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform which has currently no rivals among Android phones. On the other hand, while providing a less powerful chipset, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra comes in a variant with a higher amount of RAM and internal storage: 16 GB and 512 GB respectively. Motorola Edge+ only comes in a configuration with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of native storage, while Huawei P40 Pro+ stops at 8 GB of RAM. Note that if you get the global version of the Huawei P40 Pro+, you won’t get Google services out of the box due to the U.S. ban.

Camera

The most amazing camera (and not only of this comparison) is on board of the Huawei P40 Pro+. It features a 50 MP Penta-camera (the fifth sensor is a TOF 3D sensor) including 10x optical zoom and a 40 MP ultrawide lens. Further, on the front side, the 32 MP selfie snapper is accompanied by another TOF sensor for 3D facial recognition. The silver medal goes to the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra offering a 108 MP quad camera with a 48 MP periscope lens, 4x optical zoom supporting 8K video recording, and awesome stabilization.

Battery

Since it packs a huge 5000 mAh battery and a less energy-demanding display than Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, Motorola Edge+ is more satisfying in terms of battery life. However, the Motorola Edge+ has slower charging speeds (just 18W with wired charging and 15W with wireless charging), while Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and Huawei P40 Pro+ charge at 40W and 45W, respectively.

Price

Huawei P40 Pro+ is priced €1399 globally, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra starts from $1199/€1099, and Motorola Edge+ costs $1199/€1200. Is it worth getting one of these handsets? Well, if you need an astonishing camera quality or you are a power user, then yes. But if you do not want the max you can get, there are a lot of more affordable devices that will let you save a lot of money while still giving you nearly perfect user experience.

Despite Huawei P40 Pro+ does not have Google services, it remains a very impressive phone due to its ceramic design, better cameras, and very fast wireless charging technologies. Over the past couple of years, Huawei has matured into a world-class smartphone maker. We look forward to the Huawei P-series in the first half of every year, as it often becomes the benchmark for smartphone cameras in that year. 2020 hasn’t been any different. And our anticipation was rewarded with not one but two powerful camera flagships, the Huawei P40 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro Plus. 

Yes, for those unaware, the top-end model in the Huawei P-series family is called the Huawei P40 Pro Plus. It’s not exactly a classy name, but it is one hell of a phone when it comes to smartphone photography. Huawei is one of the very few smartphone brands that’s still expanding the range of possibilities for the smartphone camera. In fact, before 2016, it was really hard to predict how far ahead mobile photography could go, especially after seeing the decades of professional-camera development. 

But in 2020, here we are, talking about the 10x optical zoom capacity of the HUAWEI P40 PRO Plus. This 10X optical zoom has a maximum focal length of 269mm, which covers a really wide range of focal lengths, even wider than some mirrorless camera. However, from another perspective, the HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus is the smallest camera that you can find on the planet having such a working 10x optical zoom range!

Well as a phone, 226g weight could be a bit heavy to hold it in your hand. But it seems that the P40 Pro Plus is competing against not just smartphones but also some mirrorless cameras. Accordingly, for its target users, the weight should not be a big problem. Actually the P40 Pro Plus shares the most common features with the P40 Pro. Probably the only difference is the camera experience brought by the additional telephoto camera combination and camera software updates. And in this article, we’re still going to talk about what the P40 Pro Plus model can offer to both professionals and ordinary users. 

Let’s first identify the demands of ordinary users and professionals, respectively. For ordinary users, mobile photography is their primary device to record and create memories. They usually demand the phone to be an all-rounder such as being easy to use, having good image colors and clarity, having a large storage or cloud storage, supporting intelligent image editing, and so on. Now let’s look at the P40 Pro Plus, and see how it meets this kind of users’ demands. 

Huawei P40 Pro Plus’ camera isn’t very different from the P40 Pro since they share the same primary sensor. The camera samples have great contrast and good exposure latitude. And the original 50MP resolution also provided a clear image with good sharpness. And to simplify photography for users, Huawei has one of the most effective AI solutions for scene recognition and color tuning. So even for general users, it’s not difficult to apply appropriate color styles for different topics. 

Huawei P40 Pro Plus vs P40 Pro Zoom Review

And if you are bored with the standard wide-angle view, the P40 Pro Plus amazingly brings you 2 more optical zoom cameras, a 3x and another 10x telephoto camera – a first for a smartphone in the market. Compared to the 5x zoom camera of the P40 Pro, the 3x zoom camera for the Plus version probably is a better choice. So you get a high-quality optical zoom between 3x and 10x. The 3x zoom has a maximum focal length of 81mm, which is closer to a 50mm portrait lens.

The most frequently used range of focal length usually stays no longer than 100mm, so it seems that a 3x optical zoom camera is more practical than the 5x telephoto sensor of the Pro model. However, we have to compare the samples from the P40 Pro and Plus in different zoom ranges to test this belief.

From 0.6x to 2.9x zoom, there is not much difference between the 40 Pro and the Plus version due to the same wide-angle camera and main primary shooter. But when we extended the zoom range from 3x to 4.9x, the image quality difference turned out to be remarkable as the Plus version was using the separate 3x optical lens while the image shot by the Pro version is a cropped creation by the primary camera. Though the color is quite similar to each other as they’re running the same camera software, it’s no doubt that the separate 8MP 3x zoom camera produces a clearer image with better details.

From 5x to 9x zoom, the images shot by the Pro version took the definite lead. It’s not surprising as the Pro version used its 5x optical zoom camera, while the Plus version still used its 3x zoom camera.

And eventually, as we zoomed the Plus version to 9.1 times, what we saw in the viewfinder is pretty surprising, not just because of its superb clarity but also for its powerful stabilization when I was holding it in my hands. It’s worth adding that even for some professional cameras, it’s NOT common to have such stabilization over 200mm focal length. After seeing it on a phone, we are really amazed by the tech developed by Huawei. It is the first and only brand (so far) to bring 10x optical zoom to everyday users without any need for expert or technical photography knowledge. 

So it’s clear that the additional expensive camera sensor is fully functional and not just aa gimmick. We could also apply different filters and night mode to the whole range of focal length. 

Huawei P40 Pro Plus In Night Mode

Now, let’s see some 10x zoom samples under night mode. Similar to how it works over the primary camera, users have to hold it steady for several seconds as it creates composite photos. So if you want to use the 10x zoom camera, it’s better to attach the phone to a tripod to get a perfect stabilization.

But the Huawei P40 Pro Plus has the same issue we discussed in the review video of the P40 Pro model, which is the viewfinder. What you see on the display viewfinder is not what you eventually get. The captured images turn out to better than what’s seen on the viewfinder.

It’s probably designed to protect the phone from overheating and consuming a lot of power. After all, computing the final result live on the viewfinder could be an exhausting task for the device. And indeed, the Plus variant managed to keep the temperature under control with good power consumption levels. We’ll talk about it in detail in the next para.

Huawei P40 Pro Plus Videography & Battery Consumption

In addition to all the camera experience, we also tested the Plus model’s battery endurance as a filming machine. So we shot 4k 60fps video on both the P40 Pro and the Plus version for 30 mins. 

The P40 Pro consumed 18% power, while the Plus model consumed 17% of power. And both of them controlled the temperature very well. So accordingly, there should be little difference between their battery performance. Accordingly, we estimate that the P40 Pro and the Plus version can shoot video at the highest quality for over 2 and a half hours.

So that’s how the Plus version enhances everyday photography for ordinary users.

But for professional photographers, all the features we’ve talked about probably just meet their basic demands in their creation process. Compared to their professional equipment, the image quality created by the HUAWEI P40 PRO Plus may not able to convince them to use it as the primary device for photography, at least not for every professional. However, it doesn’t mean that the Plus version is completely useless for professional photographers. 

As we mentioned above, the P40 Pro Plus is small and is able to shoot excellent zoomed-in photos without the need for bulky switchable lenses. Believe it or not, photographers hate carrying all kinds of cameras and their accessories when they need to work in poor conditions. More importantly, great moments are fleeting. So even professionals often need something that’s portable but capable of delivering good quality shots. And the Huawei P40 Pro Plus comes close to meeting this demand. 

We have seen the evolution of the phone camera for years, and it is undeniable that the Huawei P series is one of the most aggressive camera smartphone lineups. For ordinary users, the intelligence of its cameras such as AI recognition helps bring a high-end photography experience without the need for any technical knowledge. For professionals, on the contrary, it expands the possibility of what a smartphone camera can do, bringing it closer to professional cameras than ever before.

Huawei P40 Pro is leading the DxOMark Camera and Selfie rankings ever since it was tested. But when it was finally tested for audio, the result came out something unexpected. The handset barely made the 20th position, making it one of the below-average performing devices selling for a premium price.

Just like the Honor V30 Pro, the Huawei P40 Pro scores an overall 59 points in DxOMark Audio test. Also, similar to that handset, it performed poorly in audio playback (54 points) with much better audio recording (74 points) capabilities.

In the playback test, the DxOMark Audio team found the P40 Pro’s mono speaker to be inferior to those on other high-end devices. Dual stereo speaker system plays an important role in spatial performance. Since it is non-existent in the Huawei’s latest flagship, the phone suffers a lot in this department.

The phone also fails in the dynamics department due to the lack of bass and muffled trebles. The volume performance is not good either with much lower volume in both maximum and minimum levels compared to other devices.

The only good things about P40 Pro’s speaker is its timbre performance and well-controlled artifacts.

Whereas in audio recording, the handset performs extremely well in all use cases. It has good timbre performance as well as exceptional dynamics, in which it fails miserably in playback. Anyway, it does have problems with background rendering and wideness in selfie videos.

Huawei P40 Pro, the company’s one of the three flagship smartphones for the first half of 2020 underwent JerrryRigEverthing durability test recently. Like any other modern phone, it passed the test with ease.

The P40 Pro is made of glass and aluminium like most premium handsets. The glass used on this device is unknown, however, it scratches at level 6 with deeper grooves at level 7 of Mohs’ hardness.

But during the burn test, the BOE OLED display used in this handset was damaged leaving a permanent mark. LCDs and most Samsung AMOLED displays do not get affected. This could one of the reasons why the South Korean tech giant ditched BOE panels for Galaxy S21.

Do note that this is just an assumption and it is not sure why the BOE display panels failed for both Samsung and Apple. In the former’s case, the panels did not even pass the first stage of testing.

As for bend test, the Huawei P40 Pro also passes it without any hiccup thought it has antenna lines in the middle of its frame. Overall, the phone performs well in Zack Nelson’s JerryRigEverything durability test.

The P40 Pro retails for €999 in Europe for the 8GB + 256GB storage variant. Thus, being a device with a premium price tag, it should last for a long time and the durability test explicitly confirms it.

Huawei introduced ‘Celia’, its own voice assistant at the launch of Huawei P40 series with EMUI 10.1. However, it did not make it to the retail units. But now the company’s homegrown assistant is finally here, albeit, it is limited to certain regions for now.

Due to the ban imposed by the US government on Huawei, the Chinese telecom had to rethink its smartphone division. It introduced Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) along with AppGallery to fill the void left by Google Mobiles Services (GMS) and Play Store.

At the Huawei P40 series launch event, the company also announced EMUI 10.1. The latest version of the brand’s mobile software also included ‘Celia’, its new voice assistant for international markets.

For the unaware, Huawei already has a voice assistant called Xiaoyi in China. It is found on the company’s smart speakers like AI Speaker 2, smartphones, and more. We believe the new Celia voice assistant could be based on Xiaoyi itself.

Having said that, if you own a Huawei P40, P40 Pro or P40 Pro Plus, you can use Celia by changing your locale to either UK, France, Spain, Chile, Mexico or Colombia. That is because the assistant is only limited to these regions as of now.

As far as languages are concerned, it can understand English (UK), Spanish, and French for now. Since Celia is intended as a replacement for Google Assitant, its UI is similar to the latter. Further, it also supports HiVision AI Lens and AI touch-shopping.

The Celia voice assistant is expected to be available on multiple Huawei and Honor smartphones with EMUI 10.1 update in the coming weeks.

OnePlus used to be a brand popular for its flagship killers. But now, things have changed. Since the OnePlus 7 Pro received a positive response from users across the globe, OnePlus is in the pursuit of further expanding its premium segment.

The OnePlus 7(T) Pro models have already shown us that the brand can make premium phones. But it’s not hard to manufacture premium phones, anyone can do that in this age. What’s challenging is to make a premium phone that sells well. Take the Motorola Edge+ for example – it features pretty good specs but it’s priced way above competitors like the Xiaomi Mi 10 and OnePlus 8 Pro in India. 

So for the OnePlus 8 Pro to do well,  it will have to beat the top flagships in the market right now. This includes the Huawei P40 Pro. So, we decided to pit the OnePlus 8 Pro vs Huawei P40 Pro to see if a higher price tag offers a better camera experience. The OnePlus 8 Pro retails in Europe for £799 while the Huawei P40 Pro is £100 more expensive in the same market. 

We are specifically interested in the camera performance of these two flagships. In addition to the discussion about its camera, we will go through some other features that affect the whole photography experience, such as display as the viewfinder and battery life when shooting videos. Also, please note, you’ll see OnePlus 

Huawei P40 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Display

But first, let’s take a look at their displays. In the past few years, OnePlus has made display as its strength. And this strategy has worked pretty well. High-quality display with 2K resolution and 90Hz refresh-rate did bring amazing experience, especially at first glance. After the 7 Pro, OnePlus has led the display trend in the industry. The OnePlus 8 Pro features a 120Hz 2K SAMSUNG Amoled display, while the P40 Pro also follows the trend and features a 90Hz 1080P+ display.

But I have to mention that it’s still hard for the P40 Pro to have the same wonderful visual experience as on the OnePlus 8 Pro. In smartphone photography, the display is primarily used to fulfill the role of a viewfinder and a photo viewer. And as our Huawei P40 Pro review revealed, the Huawei P40 Pro did not provide the same previewing image as the real-time camera can shoot. This is not an issue of its display, but the software should shoulder this responsibility. So it will probably be fixed in the near future.

Huawei P40 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Camera Viewfinder

As a camera viewfinder, the OnePlus 8 Pro doesn’t just provide more color options in screen calibration, but also has more accurate colors under advanced modes with sRGB or P3 Gamut, while the Huawei P40 Pro doesn’t have gamut switch options for users. However, these two models both have excellent color accuracy under the natural mode. So both of these two models are able to provide accurate color checking for photographers to retouch colors in post-production. 

Speaking of post-production, it’s far more comfortable and effective to edit your photos on the Huawei P40. OnePlus interactive designers probably don’t rotate their phones to edit their photos on OnePlus models. So when you try to rotate the phone to have a larger image view, things are not as smooth as you’d want. The editing UI feels a bit cramped. And since the menu doesn’t have an appropriate position, it takes up significant space on the screen, leaving limited space for the photo. In addition to this, users are not allowed to pinch-zoom the editing photo and get a better view. On the Huawei P40 Pro, the menu is arranged at the right side without taking much space of the image. And the Huawei P40 Pro also has a more efficient and richly functional menu for photographers. In addition to basic adjustment, Huawei’s menu has a convenient smart option to auto-boost images for users. So the Huawei P40 Pro has some pretty strong post-production tools. 

Huawei P40 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Camera Performance

Let’s look at their camera setup now. Both of them are equipped with the top camera setup but the camera combination is a bit different. For the OnePlus 8 Pro, the top camera is a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera, which is paired with the IMX 586 sensor and supports 3cm Macro mode. The second sensor is a 48MP main camera with OIS anti-shake. The sensor used under the main camera is Sony’s latest sensor. The third one is a Color filter camera providing Photochrom filter. In case you are wondering, this is the sensor that gives the phone the ability to see-through certain materials! Another small camera above the flashlight is a 3x telephoto camera.

As for the Huawei P40 Pro, we introduced its camera hardware in our review article and video last week. If we had to sum up P40’s camera – each camera sensor on the phone is the best in its class! This includes a customized IMX700 50MP primary camera, a 40MP wide-angle camera, a 5x optical telephoto camera, and a TOF camera. 

According to the camera hardware specs, we know that theoretically, the Huawei P40 Pro should cover a wider range of focal length and better bokeh performance, but it lacks the ability to shoot macro photography. In addition, the separated photochrom camera on OnePlus 8 Pro allows users to try infrared photography, which used to be a kind of special photography of a minority of enthusiasts. It’s quite a unique feature but unfortunately, it will be disabled temporarily because it can see-through certain objects like clothes too!

Huawei P40 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Camera Samples

Now let’s look at their samples. Under good lighting conditions, both main cameras have excellent performance. Especially in the aspect of dynamic range and detail, thanks to the large sensors and original high resolution, they could catch rich details of shadow and present appropriate exposure covering both bright and dark areas. But if you check more samples, we found that sometimes the OnePlus 8 Pro did not have the accurate and stable white balance as the P40 Pro could hold. And due to the larger aperture, the P40 Pro has a smoother bokeh effect on the background.

As for their color accuracy, the samples of the Huawei P40 seem to be closer to the true tones, while the colors of the OnePlus 8 Pro tended to be cooler. And over the cool tones, such as green and blue colors, the image presented a much higher saturation. Sometimes the samples shot by the P40 Pro were a bit reddish but it’s hard to perceive. 

But about the color preference, users could adjust the colors on both models. For example, if you like vivid or smooth colors, you can choose a Vivid filter or smooth filter on both the OnePlus 8 Pro and the P40 Pro. In addition, turning on the Ai recognition on the P40 Pro or the Ultra-shot HDR on the 8 Pro could also give you stronger colors.

Now let’s move to the night scene. Both models performed well in the aspect of exposure balance and clarify. If I have to say what’s really different, I think the Huawei samples did a better job in noise control.

In addition to the main camera, the wide-angle camera is another important upgrade to these two models. Both of them feature a super high resolution and are able to shoot a great 4K video as the main cameras can do. From the samples, we found that the image quality of the wide-angle shooter is pretty close to the samples produced by their own primary cameras, such as higher saturation on cooler colors for the OnePlus model, and stable exposure for the Huawei Model. Although the wide-angle camera of the P40 Pro features a 40MP resolution, unlike the OnePlus 8 Pro, users were not allowed to turn on the High-resolution mode when shooting wide-angle photos. 

And now let’s move to their telephoto cameras. The Huawei P40 Pro took the lead in this round without any question. The 5x zoom camera is much more practical. Although the OnePlus 8 Pro has a 3x optical zoom shooter, there isn’t much difference between their samples. The 3x zooming images of the P40 pro were captured and cropped by the main camera, but thanks to the 50MP high resolution, the samples still retained good detail. Then we tried to shoot some 5x zooming photos. Limited by the 8MP resolution of the telephoto camera, the cropped samples of the OnePlus 8 Pro were not as clear as the Huawei’s 12MP 5x photos. But both models feature OIS anti-shake, so it’s pretty easy to hold them in hand and catch the scene with good clarity.

The dedicated ToF camera of the P40 Pro is what the OnePlus 8 Pro doesn’t have. So, the Huawei model has a unique aperture mode to capture images with adjustable apertures. On the contrary, what the Huawei model doesn’t have is the OnePlus 8 Pro’s capacity of macro photography and infrared photography. 

As compared to rivals equipping a dedicated macro camera, using the 48MP wide-angle camera to add macro shooting ability on the OnePlus 8 Pro is a smart solution. And the samples also were excellent with rich detail. As for the photochrom filter, it’s like OnePlus wants to add something unique that no other premium smartphone offers.

To us, the OnePlus 8 Pro just provides a smart option to make your Instagram story special. Especially considering it only has a 5MP resolution, we don’t think it could satisfy the needs of a professional photographer.

Huawei P40 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro: Video Shooting Performance

As for their video shooting quality, both of them support 4k 60fps video shooting on both the main camera and wide-angle camera. You can check out their video qualities in the review video added above. 

In addition to the camera experience, we also tested their battery endurance as video shooting devices. So, we shot 4k 60fps video on these two models at the same time for 30 minutes and compared their power consumption. Both of them were heated up but only the OnePlus 8 Pro would pop up a warning of high temperature and then stop recording. Another drawback of the OnePlus 8 Pro is that it is only allowed to continuously take up to a 5-minute 4K 60fps shot, while the P40 Pro did not have this time limitation. But when we turned on 4k 30fps shooting, there was no time limitation for the OnePlus 8 Pro. Anyway, in our 30-minute test, the Huawei model perfectly completed the task. 

About the power consumption, the OnePlus 8 Pro consumed 22% power, while the P40 Pro consumed 17% of the power. So accordingly, we estimated that the HUAWEI P40 Pro may have a longer camera battery life which is able to shoot highest video quality for over 2 and a half hours, while the OnePlus 8 Pro could shoot the same quality of video for about 2 hours but could have a heating issue. 

So that’s the whole comparison. We hope this Huawei P40 Pro vs OnePlus 8 Pro camera comparison gives you insights about their camera performance. There’s no doubt that the P40 Pro is the better camera phone here. But, the OnePlus 8 Pro has a strong camera setup and it deserves the title of one of the best Android flagships in the market right now.

Motorola Edge+ vs Huawei P40 Pro vs Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Design

Motorola Edge+ has an astonishing design. It is my favorite one because it offers one of the highest screen-to-body ratios ever seen on a phone. And it is naturally built with premium materials, including glass for the back and aluminum for the frame. Right after, if we only consider the look, there is Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro with a minimalistic design and a curved screen just like the Motorola Edge+. I do not like the Huawei P40 Pro so much because of its huge camera module, but it is the only phone from this trio to be waterproof with the IP68 certification. While Motorola Edge+ is just splash resistant, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro does not offer any kind of protection against water.

Display

If we talk about displays, it is a very close fight between Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Motorola Edge+. They offer very similar specifications on the paper, including the same aspect ratio, a Full HD+ resolution, the HDR10+ certification, and a 90 Hz refresh rate. Huawei P40 Pro offers a high refresh rate and a Full HD+ resolution as well, but its rivals have slightly more interesting front panels and smaller punch holes. On the other hand, Huawei P40 Pro is the only offering infrared face recognition thanks to the additional sensor placed inside is dual punch hole.

Hardware/Software

There is no way the Kirin 990 chipset found on the Huawei P40 Pro can compete with the Snapdragon 865 found on Motorola Edge+ and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro when it comes to performance. You should get more or less the same performance with the Motorola Edge+ and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. The former offers a stock Android experience, while Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has the highly-customized MIUI 11 out of the box. On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro offers more internal storage in its high-end variant (512 GB). Only the internal storage of the Huawei P40 Pro (which goes up to 512 GB) can be expanded with an external card.

Camera

Despite the lower resolution of its main sensor, Huawei P40 has the highest camera capabilities. Its camera setup co-engineered with Leica is composed of a 50 MP main sensor, a 40 MP ultrawide lens, a 12 MP periscope sensor with 5x optical zoom, a TOF 3D sensor, and dual OIS. It provides a stunning photo quality in every environment. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Motorola Edge+ are more interesting when it comes to video recording (they can record videos up to 6K and 8K resolution, respectively), with the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro offering a slightly more advanced rear camera department but an inferior front camera. Huawei P40 Pro wins the selfie comparison as well.

Battery

With an amazing 5000 mAh battery, Motorola Edge+ is the king of battery life. It supports both fast charging and wireless charging, but it does not provide blazing charging speeds, unlike Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro.

Price

Motorola Edge+ is sold for €1200/$999 globally, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro sells for €999/$1081, and Huawei P40 Pro begins at €999 as well. On the paper, Huawei P40 Pro looks slightly more impressive since it is waterproof, it has better cameras, 3D facial recognition, and more “exclusive” features. But it lacks Google services in the global market and this is a big issue. Motorola Edge+ and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro are very close: the former offers a bigger battery and an amazing design, the latter has more internal storage in its higher-end version and potentially better cameras (but this has to be verified). For many, Huawei is currently a troubled smartphone company. The brand has been targeted by the US as well as other countries since 2019. In fact, Huawei is currently banned from using technology or components from any US companies, including software from Google.

This caused some trouble for the world’s second-largest smartphone maker. But it’s not as bad as you think.

If you look at the figures, Huawei was the only major Chinese smartphone brand to grow in sales in the first quarter of 2020 in China, though Chinese smartphone sales dropped by an unprecedented 22% during the same period due to Covid-19 outbreak. Amazingly Huawei saw a 6% rise to 28.7 million phones, capturing a 39% share of total smartphone sales.

So it’s clear that Huawei wants to fight back and its latest smartphone, the Huawei P40 Pro is going to be a strong weapon in this fight. So, let’s take a deeper look at the Huawei P40 Pro and what it brings to the table. The phone has several USPs to take on the big players in the market and is currently the best camera smartphone on DxOMark.

Huawei P40 Pro Display

The display of the P40 Pro looks amazing right from the start. Huawei designers redesigned the curved edges for maximum display coverage. They call it the Quad-curve overflow display. But if we look at it closely, although it does reach a wonderful visual experience, the hole-punch of the dual cameras still leads to an imperfection that we have to accept. Without the hole, the display would have been perfect to look at.

That said, having two selfie shooters upfront does have its advantages. The selfie cameras have an excellent aperture of f/2.2 and support auto-focus even in 4K video. So, if you are looking for a smart vlogging device with great selfie cameras, the quality of the front cameras should offset the slight imperfection in its looks for most people.

Another feature of the front cameras is that it supports facial ID IR unlock which is very secure.   

As for the display quality, the P40 Pro features a 6.58-inch OLED display with a 2640 x 1200 resolution, which is close to the 2K resolution and much better than 1080P smartphones. Compared to the last model of the P30 Pro, the clarity and color accuracy is also improved a lot. But pay attention here, the most accurate color mode is the standard color mode. Under the standard mode, the average delta E is only 1.0 and the P3 gamut coverage reaches 99%. In addition, the P40 Pro display has a 90Hz refresh rate. Working with the Kirin 990 Soc, so far, the P40 Pro is one of the most fluid Android phones I’ve tested.

Coming to its back cover, Huawei updated the phone with a new industrial design including the technology of Anti-glazing glass and a new arrangement of the quad-cameras. The P40 Pro in our hand is not the silver version with anti-glazing glass, but I love the silver version which I tried out at the Huawei store in China. The silver variant has such a comfortable touch feeling and amazing reflection effect under all lighting scenarios. It felt like and looked like the Rear material of the OnePlus 8 Pro, which is also using the anti-glazing glass technology.

So I prefer that silver model over this Deep Sea Blue color. That said, the Blue color model that I have will satisfy most users who are looking for a dark shade.

Huawei P40 Pro Hardware

The Huawei P40 Pro runs on Huawei’s latest Soc, the Kirin 990 5G. Though the Kirin 990 may not be able to defeat the Snapdragon 865 in most benchmark apps, it is hard to sense the gap between these two chips in daily use. And thanks to the optimization of the hardware and software, the P40 Pro is able to make full use of the 90Hz display in some games.

For example, in PUBG Mobile china version, it supports the 90fps mode and in our gaming test, it did run an average framerate of 89.5 without obvious jank problem.

And then we moved to the 3D mark tests to check out its GPU performance. The results showed that the P40 Pro can defeat 98% of all the tested phones. From the tests we did, the P40 Pro did match our expectations for a 2020 flagship. Although it’s not a gaming phone, Huawei still designed a gaming phone case for the P40 Pro. With the case on, you will have two more shoulder buttons to have a more comfortable gaming operation. Even so, the gaming experience isn’t going to be the USP of the P40 Pro. Because the best part of the Huawei P40 Pro is its cameras.

Huawei P40 Pro Cameras

The most important selling point of the P40 Pro is still the cameras. And this time the camera setup is a bit aggressive. This means the phone features a large-sized lens, a larger CMOS sensor for the primary camera, and feature-rich camera arrangement. All of these changes have made it become one of our most anticipated camera phones in 2020.

First is the 50MP customized main camera with a 1/1.28 inches sensor, matching with the RYYB CFA, allowing 40% light to be absorbed by the sensor. The new sensor can provide not just better sensitivity but also better light capture, which means it is capable of handling even poor lighting conditions. And we will show how good it performs with the camera samples added in this review.

P40 Pro Night Camera Samples

But it’s not just the primary camera, the 40MP ultra-wide cine-camera is another important upgrade. It is designed not just for wide-angle photography but also for movie filming. Like the primary camera, it can also shoot up to 4K 60fps video to simulate the production of a cine camera.

And then, to cover a wider range of focus, the P40 Pro is equipped with one more 12MP 5-time optical telephoto camera, which uses the RYYB periscope structure and OIS anti-shaking technology. So, these three cameras actually try to simulate a practical zoom camera. If we consider more practical camera movement, the OIS anti-shaking of the telephoto camera and the primary camera helps a lot when panning or tilting, but due to the lack of smooth switching between cameras, camera zooming on the P40 Pro doesn’t achieve the same result as professional cameras can do.

If you want to take some zooming shots, just make sure that the zooming range stays from 0.8 to 8.5 times, or it stays over 8.5 times. Because you will notice the change in resolution when you switch between these zoom ranges.

And the last camera is a ToF camera, which assists the other cameras to calculate depth information. It will help improve focusing speed and optimize the bokeh effect.

Let’s look at some samples.

Well, I have to say the P40 Pro is definitely the best phone for photography. Not just because it has the best primary camera, but also the best secondary cameras. Huawei has given us the best results they’ve developed. The white balance is much more accurate than the last few generations of Huawei flagships. And thanks to the larger sensor, all the samples shot by the main camera were able to produce amazing exposure latitude. For example, in these few samples, the exposure took good care of both brightness and shadow areas and especially saved great detail of shadows.

Saturation has always been the strength of Huawei phones. That’s no exception for the P40 Pro. The 40MP wide-angle cine camera also did a good job as the main camera. The wide-angle image quality was even better than some other flagships’ main camera. Generally, on most smartphones, shooting a wide-angle photo would give me a sense of isolation due to the hardware gap between a primary camera and a wide-angle camera. Usually, it was revealed as different resolutions, diverse applicable camera settings, different image colors, and the shooting experience gap. But on the P40 Pro, this feeling was almost gone. You don’t have to think of the best settings for the wide-angle camera, and the image quality was also wonderful. It’s just like a second primary camera with a wider view.

And the 5x optical telephoto camera was far more practical than the P30 Pro. With the help of the OIS anti-shaking, it’s pretty easy to hold it in hands and shoot perfect long-focus photos with stable preview. Another highlight of the camera performance is night mode. This time Huawei upgraded their night-scene solution. In the last few Huawei flagships, maybe you would see amazing brightness improvement when turn on the night mode. The new solution made it become much smarter. The higher brightness has been done in the normal mode. If we turn on the night mode, the Ai will help us balance the exposure of the whole image and make sure there is no color deviation problem which was an issue with the P30 Pro.

Thanks to the ToF camera, Huawei’s aperture mode is more accurate for distance detection. Under the aperture mode, we were able to adjust the bokeh effect after the shooting, which gives us a second chance to get what exactly we want.

In addition, Huawei also provided some interesting filters including 3 Leica filters and several other emotional filters. You can use these filters to change the mood of your shots, giving you greater creative freedom.

Note that I have one complaint about the device. When we shoot photos on the P40 Pro, the preview image was not as good as what the phone can really produce. It’s less clear and less detailed. It’s not a big problem, but sometimes the inconsistency would affect my confidence to press the shutter button. And eventually, I found that my worries were unnecessary. The phone managed to capture crisp images even if they didn’t look too good in the preview window.

Huawei P40 Pro Battery Life

About the battery and charging, the P40 Pro is also at the flagship level. 25-min charging with the included 40W charger can bring back 50% power, and it took only 1-hour to get it full-charged. And it also supports up to 27W wireless charging.

As for software, Huawei’s AppGallery has a number of Google app alternatives like Here Maps. But there still might be some apps missing which can be downloaded via alternate apps stores like Amazon app store and even APK Pure. Using these three apps stores together, we could use most of the popular apps found on the Play store.

Huawei P40 series is receiving a new update in China. The update bumps up the firmware version to EMUI 10.1.0.126 and adds new camera feature as well as optimizes WiFi and notifications. The last major update for these handsets brought 50MP AI High-Quality Mode.

The new update is being rolled out to both Huawei P40 and P40 Pro, which are currently on EMUI 10.1.0.123 build. Below listed are all the models that are receiving the OTA now.

In addition to that, the new EMUI update also improves ‘AI Remove Passerby’ feature as well as improves the clarity of pictures with more realistic and natural colors. Also, it optimizes the WiFi speed in some scenarios ensuring improvement in internet experience. Last but not least, it also optimizes the display effect of notifications on the notification panel interface.

Since the update is being seeded out through OTA, it might take time to reach all the devices. Also, we are not sure when these changes will be added to the global version of the P40 series.

The recently launched Huawei P40 series is receiving a new software update in China. The update bumps up the phone’s build number to EMUI 10.1.0.122 and brings a number of new features including a new high megapixel mode in the camera app, new smart video playback option, and a new clock style for AOD.

The new EMUI 10.1.0.122 update for Huawei P40 series weighs 711MB in size. Although the update will nor erase anything, the company suggests creating a backup just in case. The official changelog for the update is as mentioned below (translated from Chinese).

As you can see from the changelog above, the new update brings a new 50MP AI high-quality mode, which you can have a look from the screenshot attached below. Further, the update adds a new AOD clock style and also brings support for smart video playback on Huawei’s new Vision Smart X65 OLED TV. Last but not least, the update also fixes some UI glitches.

As of now, the update is being currently rolled out to the Chinese version of the Huawei P40 series. It is uncertain when this update will hit the global editions of the handsets. Eligible devices are as below.

After the launch of the OnePlus 8 series, we can finally say all the main flagships of the first half of 2020 are official. And we can finally make the first comparison between them. After comparing the OnePlus 8 Pro to Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Oppo Find X2 Pro, we decided to compare it with the remaining flagships from the main smartphone manufacturers released in the last period in order to give you a complete view of the actual scene. We are naturally talking about the Huawei P40 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+ which will be the main rivals of the OnePlus 8 Pro if we exclude the devices included in the previous comparison.

Design

Which device has the best design? It is all a matter of taste. All come with an impressive screen-to-body ratio, punch-hole displays, glass backs, and aluminum frames. And all of them are waterproof with the IP68 certification. Huawei P40 Pro seems to offer a higher screen-to-body ratio, but its dual punch hole makes the front panel less minimalistic than OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+. Huawei P40 Pro is also the most compact device due to its smaller display. Which design do you prefer?

Display

On the paper, OnePlus 8 Pro offers the most impressive display. It has an amazing 10 bit panel displaying one billion colors with a Quad HD+ resolution and the HDR10+ technology. The handset also provides a very smooth user experience with its 120 Hz refresh rate. And it has the widest panel of the trio with a 6.78-inch diagonal. Right after, we got the Samsung Galaxy S20+ with the same resolution and the same refresh rate, but it can be used at 120 Hz only with the Full HD+ resolution. Huawei P40 Pro offers a lower, but still high, 90 Hz refresh rate. But the max resolution stops at 1080p.

Hardware/Software

OnePlus 8 Pro is fueled by the Snapdragon 865 chipset, Samsung Galaxy S20+ packs either a Snapdragon 865 or an Exynos 990 SoC (slightly inferior to Snapdragon 865, according to benchmarks) depending on the market, while Huawei P40 Pro has a Kirin 990. With Samsung Galaxy S20+ and OnePlus 8 Pro, you get up to 12 GB of RAM. Besides a chipset that can be considered inferior to the Snapdragon 865, Huawei P40 Pro even comes with less RAM: just 8 GB. In each case, you get Android 10 out of the box.

Camera

As for now, it is hard to establish which devices of this trio sports the best cameras. We can only analyze the specs on the paper since we still had no chance to test the OnePlus 8 Pro as it just went official. On the paper, Huawei P40 Pro looks more interesting with its periscope lens supporting up to 5x optical zoom, an amazing 50 MP sensor with RYYB filter, and a 40 MP ultrawide lens. This handset is currently in the first place of DxOMark’s ranking of the best camera phones.

Battery

Due to its smaller battery, Huawei P40 Pro should provide a shorter battery life than OnePlus 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+. But it has the fastest charging technology with a power of 40W.

Price

OnePlus 8 Pro is priced €899/$899 in its base variant, Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G (in Europe there is also a 4G version costing €999) costs $1,199/€1,099, and Huawei P40 Pro starts from €999 (it is not sold in the U.S. for obvious reasons). With its amazing display, fastest wireless charging technology, amazing hardware, big battery, and even nice cameras, OnePlus 8 Pro looks like the most balanced device of this trio, at least on the paper. But Huawei P40 Pro may be the most impressive one in terms of camera. But you should not underestimate Samsung Galaxy S20+ which is more or less at the same level as the OnePlus 8 Pro. Unfortunately, we still can not make a comparison based on the usage and given the marginal differences, we can not pick a definitive winner. Which one would you choose?

TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) has bestowed the Huawei P40 series with the ‘Best Photo Smartphone’ award. It is worth noting that TIPA World Awards are based on innovation and is not judged by the performance of the product.

The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) is a body consisting of print and media publications associated with the photo/imaging field. It gives away awards annually to the most innovative products under different categories such as cameras, lenses, accessories, services, and tech & design.

The association recently published the winners of the 2020 edition of its Word Awards. In which, the Huawei P40 series as a whole has won the Best Photo Smartphone award. Surprisingly, the P series lineup has been winning this award since the TIPA World Awards was first introduced in 2017.

The first smartphone to win this award was Huawei P10 / P10 Plus in 2017, followed by P20 Pro and P30 Pro in 2018 and 2019 respectively. Since the award is honored based on innovation, we can understand why Huawei P series has been winning it for years.

For instance, this year’s one of the three winners, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus features the largest-ever smartphone camera sensor,  a 50MP RYYB sensor of 1/1.28-inch size with omnidirectional phase detection autofocus. This primary camera is further paired with a 40MP f/1.8 ultra-wide cine lens, an 8MP f/2.4 telescope camera with OIS and up to 10x optical zoom, another 8MP f.2.4 telescope camera with OIS but up to 3x optical zoom, and a TOF depth sensor.

Huawei‘s P series has always been about the awesome camera co-engineered with German photography giant LEICA. The P40 series was released in China a few days back and alongside the P40, the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ were also unveiled. The major highlight of the P40 Pro+ is the 10X optical zoom lens which is not only capable of capturing 10xzoom shots but also 20x hybrid zoom and 100x digital zoom. The scope of what this brings cannot be better imagined but experienced. However, some camera samples have been shared online which shows how the zoom pans out.

The zoom allows mobile phones to take pictures far beyond the horizon of the natural eyes, unravelling invisible objects and still maintaining the vivid clarity of the shots. The first set of six continuously zoomed-in pictures fully show the charm of the P40 Pro+ 100x digital zoom. From a distance, it is just a row of ordinary high-rise buildings. As the zoom factor continues to zoom in, the artwork on the building became visible. Further zooming in up to 100 times reveals a man and woman on the bridge.

In another set of camera samples shot on a beach, the normal shot faintly shows the beach tents. The telephoto lens of the P40 Pro+ was able to reveal the colours of the beach chairs and even shows a few people sitting on them.

Another sample confirms the zoom is also active and can be deployed at night or in low light conditions. The P40 Pro+ zoom was able to scan the QR code on a smartphone’s screen from 50 meters away and in the dark! The picture is a collage with samples shot by two different flagship’s cameras which were not clear enough to complete a QR code scan.

Huawei‘s CEO Yu Chengdong granted an interview to the Chinese media on the sidelines of the P40 series launch event held yesterday. The consumer business head spoke on a number of issues ranging from the reason why the P40 series didn’t feature a 120Hz screen refresh rate, to the company’s phone profit margin and the consumer business projection for this year.

Richar Yu also unveiled the firm’s shipment results and market share for 2019. The CEO hinted that Huawei’s consumer business raked in total revenue of 467.304 billion yuan ($65 billion). This represents a year-on-year increase of 34.0%. Shipment of both Huawei and Honor phones exceeded 240 million units, an increase of more than 16% year-on-year. He also disclosed that the company shipped over 6.9 million units of 5G phones last year.

Yu Chengdong added that with Huawei’s impressive record, the company could easily have dethroned Samsung to become the world’s number one mobile phone manufacturer in terms of shipping volume if not for the US/China trade war. Even with the sanctions, Huawei’s record shipping makes it the number 2 phone manufacturer globally after Samsung.

The Huawei exec also spoke about the DXOMark-topping camera technology onboard its latest smartphones. Yu Chengdong mentioned that Huawei cameras are far ahead of its industry rivals including Apple. He hinted that the Huawei P40 Pro camera parts cost $100 which is quite expensive considering there are other parts sourced from suppliers inside the phone. Thus, revealed that the profit margin for the P40 Pro is very low. He lamented how Apple is selling low-cost things very expensive, while Huawei is selling its products with expensive, cutting-edge technology at cheap prices.

Yu Chengdong equally hinted that Huawei has always invested heavily in R&D. In 2019, Huawei’s R&D expenses reached 131.7 billion yuan (about $18.5 billion US dollars). The huge investment is yielding results, though. Huawei currently holds more than 85,000 patents worldwide, 90% of which are invention patents. In 2019, the Chinese tech giant ranked first in terms of patent applications as its patent filings in the EU reached 3524, WIPO data revealed recently.

Yesterday, Huawei launched the P40 series in China. Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu gave an online interview to the press earlier today. In that, he mentioned the company is barely making a profit from its high-end premium smartphones.

Huawei dethroned Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments in 2019. But yet, it’s profit margin is less than that of the Cupertino-based tech giant. This is because the brand’s premium products feature high-end tech, which costs more but still the company sells the final product at a lesser price than its prime competitors.

Mr. Richard Yu said the camera components in the Huawei P40 series alone cost more than $100. He also revealed that the company has so far lost around $60 – $70 million dollars in selling the Mate Xs foldable smartphone, even though it is priced at 16,999 Yuan (~$2267). He further added that the company cannot make a profit unless the price of folding panels goes down. Till then, the retail price of the foldables will remain high.

Mr. Yu also revealed that Huawei’s investment in R&D will likely be the second-largest this year. He also added that some of the competitors merely spend a billion Yuan in R&D, however, his company is investing $20 billion. 

He believes innovation and products should go hand in hand to retain customers and maintain sales. This is why Huawei has been focusing more on research and development. In 2019, the company invested about $18.5 billion in R&D (third-largest), which accounted for 15.3% of its total revenue of 467.3 billion Yuan with 34% YoY growth.

Huawei holds 85,000 patents worldwide, out of which 90% are invention patents. Last year, Huawei was the top patent applier in the European Union with a total count of 3,524.

Huawei today officially released a number for products in its home market with the P40 series smartphones at the helms. The company equally unveiled the X65 Smart TV with an OLED display and several amazing features.

During the launch event, Huawei’s CEO Yu Chengdong took time to respond to complaints about the P40 series not featuring support for 120Hz screen refresh rate. Yu Chengdong disclosed that the Huawei P40 Pro can naturally be configured to support the 120Hz refresh rate. However, the company took into consideration other factors such as the power consumption of the phone and others which he did not mention. Thus, the Chinese giant decided to stick with the 90Hz refresh rate as the maximum for the P40 Pro.

The Huawei CEO argued that the 90Hz display of the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ has been optimized to be very smooth. For the avoidance of doubt, while the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ features support for 90Hz refresh rate, the standard Huawei P40 has a 60Hz screen refresh rate.

Higher screen refresh rates have become important components of flagship models. We have seen OEMs bump up the refresh rates of their smartphone models from the usual 60 Hertz to 90 Hertz and even up to 120 Hertz especially on gaming smartphones. This has brought improvement to the gaming experience. Even though the P40 Pro only has support for 90Hz refresh rate, it is widely accepted that 90Hz is just adequate to handle most of the mobile games with heavy graphics smoothly. It also offers better battery consumption than a 120Hz refresh rate.

Huawei has officially launched the Huawei P40 series in China today, nearly two weeks after it was announced internationally via an online event. The company has unveiled three flagship smartphones in the domestic market: Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, and Huawei P40 Pro Premium.

Since we already know all about the specs and features of the new devices, let’s first take a look at the China pricing of the Huawei P40 series.

Huawei P40 China Pricing & Availability

The Huawei P40 China pricing is as follows.

As you can see, the Huawei P40 series models are priced way cheaper in China, just like its predecessors. This difference in the European and Chinese pricing of the P40 series is similar to what we saw for the P30 series last year.

The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro models will go on sale in China later today (April 8) at 10 PM. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus will go on sale on June 1, 2020.

Huawei P40 Series Specs

The Huawei P40 series share a similar design profile. So you get a rectangular camera housing at the back with soft-matte glass finish on the P40 and the P40 Pro models. The premium P40 Pro Plus comes with a ceramic back. Up front, the P40 model comes with a 6.1-inch flat OLED display with dual punch-hole cameras on the top left corner. On the other hand, the P40 Pro and Pro Plus models feature an “overflow” curved 6.58-inch display with dual punch-hole cameras in the same position as the P40.

Owing to a smaller display and battery, the standard Huawei P40 is lightweight and compact. The phone weighs just 175 grams and measures just 8.5mm in thickness. In comparison, the P40 Pro weighs 209 grams and is nearly 9mm thick. The P40 is not as water-resistant as the IP68 certified Pro and Plus models, but the IP53 rating ensures it can withstand a few splashes. All three models feature a larger screen fingerprint sensor which is 30 percent larger and faster than its predecessor.

Under the hood, all three models feature Huawei Kirin 990 5G flagship processor, starting with 8GB of RAM. They support NaVIC in addition to GPS, AGPS, Glonass, and BeiDou along with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. The new Huawei P40 series comes with the latest EMUI 10.1 OS based on Android 10 with HMS.

The Huawei P40 comes with a 3800mAh battery with 22.5W SuperCharge charging technology. The P40 Pro and Pro Plus have much faster wired charging solutions for its 4200mAh battery, maxing at 40W. What’s even more interesting is that the Huawei P40 Pro Plus comes with 40W wireless charging support, making it the world’s fastest wireless charging smartphone right now.

The Huawei P40 has a triple camera setup. The P40 Pro has quad-cameras while the P40 Pro Plus has a penta-camera setup.

The standard Huawei P40 comes with a 50MP RYYB f/1.9 UltraVision camera along with a 16MP UltraWide Angle shooter and an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto shooter. The telephoto lens supports 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom, and 30x digital zoom. The phone gets OIS and AIS for image stabilization and can shoot 4K 60fps videos.

The Huawei P40 Pro comes with a 40MP f/1.8 Ultra Wide Cine lens, an upgraded 50MP RYYB f/1.9 sensor with OIS, an 8MP optical periscope camera, and a ToF sensor. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus has an additional 8MP f/2.4 SuperPeriscope lens. This enables 10x optical, 20x hybrid, and up to 100x digital zoom on the Pro Plus model. On the other hand, the P40 Pro features a 5x optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom, and 50x digital zoom.

China is an important market for Huawei and the P series has been extremely well received in the domestic market. We can expect the same response for the P40 series as well.

Recently, a Weibo post, a Chinese microblogging website, leaked the Huawei P40 series core suppliers list. In other words, the list revealed the manufacturers behind its crucial components are mostly based domestically, in China. These don’t include the handset’s processor and other proprietarily developed technology.

According to the leaked list, the Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ use camera modules from Sony, Largan, Sunny Optical, OFILM, LuxVision, Q Technology, and Crystal Optech. Similarly, the fingerprint scanner is built by Goodix Technology with parts from OFILM, and Q Technology. The display touch panel and glass are provided by Lens Technology and Beil Crystal.

On 27th March, Yuan Feng, the CEO of BOE, had revealed that both the flagship models feature BOE curved displays.

A Chinese tech reporting portal, XYZone had also published a teardown video of their own. This breakdown revealed that most core components were sourced from China (primarily Huawei’s HiSilicon chipset and other technologies), Taiwan, South Korea, and even Japan. Although a small portion was also sourced from American companies like Skyworks, Qorvo, and Qualcomm for the RF fronts.

According to analysts, Huawei already has pre-existing stocks for various components. This was done prior to its US ban that disallowed it from working with US based companies. However, from its inventory, it seems that the company still has enough parts for the next year at the very least, by then the company would’ve also come up with viable replacements or through other proprietary development.

Since Huawei Pay supports contactless NFC payments in retail stores, it can be used by tapping supported Huawei / Honor devices on POS (Point-of-Sale) terminals instead of physical credit cards. The service makes use of devices’ biometric authentication system for security.

Additionally, Huawei P40 series will go on sale in Singapore from tomorrow, i.e. April 4. Launch offers include freebies like 50GB Huawei Mobile Cloud for 12 months, Smart View Flip Cover (worth S$58), and Huawei SuperCharge Wireless Car Charger (worth S$98, only P40 Pro). The Huawei P40 and  P40 Pro will be available in Silver Frost, Blush Gold, and Deep Blue Sea color variants for a price tag of S$1,048 and S$1,448 respectively.

In Singapore, the Huawei P40 series can be purchased from Huawei Concept Stores, major telco outlets, selected consumer electronic stores and online retailers like Lazada and Shopee.

Apart from Huawei Pay, Huawei Video is also launching in Singapore with the P40 series availability in the region. The video streaming service offers over 4,000 titles from BBC Studios. Further, the company promises to bring more partners to the platform soon.

Huawei recently announced its Huawei P40 flagship series smartphones which is now set to go on sale in China next week. Now, ahead of that, a tipster has shared an image of Huawei P40 Pro Plus prototype which reveals an easter egg.

It shows that the Leica penta-camera setup on the smartphone has a note that reads “Let It Go”. This confirms that the smartphone, which is codenamed “Elsa” has been named after the “Frozen” movie.

Earlier, there were reports which claimed that the Huawei P40 series smartphones have been codenamed from Frozen, with P40 and the Pro model being codename Anna and Elsa and now the latest tweet from the tipster also reveals that the Pro+ variant also carries the “Elsa” codename.

Ahead of the launch of the P40 series in China, its pricing details have leaked online. As per the leak, the Huawei P40 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage will sell for 4,488 Yuan (roughly $632). On the other hand, the Huawei P40 Pro 8GB + 128GB will sell for 5,788 Yuan (~$815) while the 8GB + 256GB variant will be sold for 6,288 Yuan (~$885).

Finally, the most pricey higher-end model, Huawei P40 Pro, is reportedly priced at 7,988 Yuan, which roughly converts to $1,125. This pricing of the smartphones for the Chinese variant is significantly lower than the pricing in the European market.

The phone features a 6.58-inch 19.8:9 aspect ratio display with 2640 x 1200 pixels screen resolution and 441 PPI and 90Hz refresh rate. There are two punch-hole cameras in its display —  a 32MP AF camera and another IR camera for Face Unlock and depth sensing.

Under the hood, the device comes powered by the company’s own Kirin 990 processor. It comes with support dual-mode SA/NSA 5G networks and the device also has a 4-layer VC Liquid Super Cooling system to ensure that the smartphone stays cool, even under heavy load and usage.

The P40 Pro smartphone features a quad-camera setup on the back which includes a 40 MP f/1.8 Ultra Wide Cine Lens, an upgraded 50MP RYYB f/1.9 sensor with OIS, a 12 MP Periscope Telephoto camera, and a ToF depth sensor.

Both smartphones arrived with top notch specs and pricing, with the top models crossing the $1,000 mark. But now, the pricing details for the Chinese launch have been leaked, which reveals pricing nearly 30 percent lower than its foreign launch in certain cases.

According to a new report, the Huawei P40 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage will sell for 4,488 Yuan (roughly 632 US Dollars). This is lower than the European pricing of 799 Euros (roughly 6,195 Yuan). Similarly, the Huawei P40 Pro 8GB + 128GB will sell for 5,788 Yuan (roughly 815 US Dollars) while the 8GB + 256GB variant will be sold for 6,288 Yuan (roughly 885 US Dollars).

Again, these prices are noticeably lower than the foreign launch that had the Huawei P40 Pro priced at 999 EUR for the 256GB models (roughly 7,745). Finally, the most pricey higher end model, Huawei P40 Pro, is reportedly priced at 7,988 Yuan (roughly 1,125 US Dollars), which is again lower than the 1,399 EUR price tag in Europe (roughly 10,845 Yuan).

This makes the Huawei P40 series about 30 percent lower in price when compared to the global launch variant. Notably, it is about 200-300 Yuan higher than the last year’s Huawei P30 series, although that is expected since the newer version feature 5G networking with the general pricing logic also being considered. Unfortunately, this has yet to be confirmed by Huawei. So, it is unclear if this is the official pricing from the Chinese tech giant. Thus, take this report with a grain of salt for now.

Huawei officially unveiled the P40 series and Huawei Watch GT 2e last week at an online-only event in Paris. Long before that in November 2019, the Chinese telecom giant also launched MatePad Pro, its flagship tablet in China, which they eventually brought to Europe in February 2020. Now, the company is set to bring all of the above-mentioned products to Malaysia very soon.

Huawei has been facing difficulties in selling its devices in the international markets after the US government added it to the entity list in May 2019. But still, the company has been trying hard to bring its innovation to other nations apart from its home country China.

The biggest hurdle for Huawei to sell devices running Android is that it no longer has access to Google Mobile Services. Thus, all of its new Android devices including smartphones and tablets are devoid of Google Play Store and other most-used necessary Google services. This makes the Huawei-made devices a tough sell in global markets.

Thus, to overcome this situation, the Chinese tech giant released HMS Core (Huawei Mobile Services), which comes pre-installed on new devices from the company including the Huawei P40 Series and Huawei MatePad Pro that are about to launch in Malaysia. On the other hand, the Huawei Watch GT 2e, which is a sporty makeover of the original Huawei Watch GT 2 runs proprietary software.

The Malaysian launch, as well as the pricing of these Huawei devices, are unknown at the moment. However, the company is giving away a RM 30 discount voucher for simply subscribing to updates on these products on its official website. Ironically, this voucher cannot be used to buy any of the aforementioned products launching soon in the country.

A couple of days ago, we reported that the newly launched next-generation P-40 series flagship smartphones from the Chinese giant — Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro Plus, have been up for pre-orders through the company’s own VMall, Tmall, JD.com, among others in China.

We reported that the the pre-orders for the Huawei P40 Pro in China exceeded the mark of 20,000 units on JD.com, even before the company officially reveals its pricing for the Chinese market on 8th April.

Now we have an update regarding the same. The number of pre-order with paid deposit for the P40 Pro have now surpassed 80,000 units on JD.com. Customers need to make a deposit of 100 yuan to pre-order the phone, so the numbers are not just reservations.

The Huawei P40 Pro features a 6.58-inch 19.8:9 aspect ratio display with 2640 x 1200 pixels screen resolution and 441 PPI and 90Hz refresh rate. There are two punch-hole cameras in its display —  a 32MP AF camera and another IR camera for Face Unlock and depth sensing.

Under the hood, the device comes powered by the company’s own Kirin 990 5G processor. The chip features new NPU that offers a 460 percent improvement in performance and a 290 percent improvement in efficiency.

The phone comes with support dual-mode SA/NSA 5G networks and the device also has a 4-layer VC Liquid Super Cooling system to ensure that the smartphone stays cool, even under heavy load and usage.

Huawei P40 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S20+ vs Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro

Design

I like the minimalism of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. With a single punch-hole camera, very narrow bezels and a less invasive camera module, it looks sweet. But unfortunately, it is the only which does not offer any kind of water resistance. Just like the Samsung Galaxy S20+, Huawei P40 Pro has the IP68 certification making it waterproof. Further, it has the highest screen-to-body ratio, even though not everyone may like the huge punch-hole housing the front cameras and sensors. Samsung Galaxy S20+ is the perfect compromise with its single punch-hole display, IP68 certification, and a more compact and thinner design.

Display

Despite it is the smallest panel, the display of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ is the most stunning one. It is the only to support a refresh rate up to 120 Hz, as well as a higher Quad HD+ resolution. According to the specs on the paper, right after we got the Xiaomi Mi 10 with an HDR10+ panel supporting a 90 Hz refresh rate and a 180 Hz touch-sampling rate. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro also comes with a wider 6.67-inch panel. The fingerprint scanner of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ should be better since it is an ultrasonic sensor. Samsung Galaxy S20+ should even provide better audio quality with its AKG stereo speakers. Even the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro has stereo speakers, while Huawei P40 Pro does not.

Hardware/Software

If we exclude the European version of the S20+, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+ come with the amazing Snapdragon 865 chipset paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage, and they boast the highest performance. Samsung Galaxy S20+ has expandable storage, while Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro does not. The Exynos version of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ launched in the European market has an inferior chipset, especially when it comes to 5G connectivity since it does not support mmWave. Huawei P40 Pro is still a very powerful flagship, but Snapdragon 865 is more performing than its Kirin 990 and its two rivals come with more RAM, while the P40 Pro stops at 8 GB. Further, Huawei P40 Pro does not have Google services preinstalled due to the U.S. ban but it relies on Huawei Mobile Services.

Camera

On the paper, the quad rear camera of the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro looks very impressive with its 108 MP main sensor, two telephoto lens with 10x hybrid zoom, and a 20 MP ultrawide sensor. But Huawei P40 Pro may actually offer an even better photo quality with its 50 MP main sensor, a 40 MP ultrawide lens and a 12 MP periscopic sensor with 5x optical zoom. Even Samsung Galaxy S20+ is one of the best camera phones out there, but it might be able to compete with its opponents only when it comes to video recording, especially thanks to its amazing stabilization system.

Battery

Due to their bigger batteries, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S20+ should offer a longer battery life on a single charge. But given that we did not test all of these devices thoroughly, we still can not give a precise and definitive opinion. What we know is that Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro offers the fastest wired charging and wireless charging technologies, while Huawei P40 Pro reaches the highest speeds at reverse wireless charging.

Price

Both Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro start at €1000/$895 globally, while for the Samsung Galaxy S20+ you need €1,099. Considering the whole specs sheets, Samsung Galaxy S20+ and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro are more or less at the same level and we will need to test both thoroughly in order to give you a definitive verdict. I would personally go for the Snapdragon 865 version of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ since it is waterproof and it has a better display. On the paper, Huawei P40 Pro is slightly inferior in terms of hardware and battery, but its cameras might offer a higher photo quality.
