Some of the most exciting phones in the world right now are ones you simply cannot walk into a store and buy, not if you live in the United States, anyway. While Americans are busy debating iPhone versus Pixel, a whole other tier of smartphones is being sold in China, Europe, and parts of Asia that would make your current device feel embarrassingly ordinary.

These phones push cameras, screens, and designs further than anything available at your local carrier store. You just can’t have them. Well, not easily.

To be clear, this isn’t a list of what’s coming soon or what might launch in the US someday. These are phones you can buy right now, just not in the US. Some are blocked due to trade restrictions. Others never made the trip because the manufacturers decided the market wasn’t worth the trouble. A few exist in a legal grey area that makes importing them genuinely complicated. Whatever the reason, they’re out there, and they’re good. Really good.

So if you’re curious what the rest of the world is using. Or if you’re the kind of person who’s already Googling import guides, here’s what you’re missing.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra

Display 6.9-inch LTPO OLED, 2608×1200, 3,500 nits peak, 120Hz Chip Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Cameras 50MP main (1-inch Leica sensor, f/1.7) + 50MP ultrawide + 200MP periscope telephoto Battery 6,000mAh — 90W wired, 50W wireless Durability IP66/IP68/IP69

Xiaomi has been building its partnership with Leica for a few years, and the 17 Ultra is where that work really pays off. The main camera sits on a one-inch sensor, and we called it one of the most ambitious smartphones of the year after getting hands-on time with it at launch.

What sets it apart from the usual flagship camera race is the Leica Essential mode, which gives photos their emotions back. Rather than chasing sharpness and perfect accuracy, it pulls back highlights, lets shadows breathe, and adds a subtle grain that makes images feel like they were taken with a real camera rather than optimised by a computer. It’s a genuinely different philosophy, and it works.

The battery is the biggest in any Xiaomi Ultra device yet, and the phone is rated for dust and water resistance at three separate ingress protection levels. It starts at around €1,249 in Europe.

Oppo Find X9 Ultra

Display 6.82-inch LTPO AMOLED, 3168×1440, 144Hz Chip Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Cameras 200MP main (Hasselblad) + 200MP periscope telephoto + 50MP secondary telephoto + 50MP ultrawide Battery 7,050mAh — 100W SuperVOOC wired, 50W AirVOOC wireless Durability IP66/IP68/IP69

The Find X9 Ultra is Oppo’s most powerful phone yet, and it comes with a camera setup that looks borderline excessive on paper. Two 200-megapixel sensors, a third 50-megapixel periscope, and a 50-megapixel ultrawide.

So as you might guess, the Find X9 Ultra targets the ultra-premium segment, competing directly with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and Vivo X300 Ultra as one of the most camera-forward phones on the market.

The Hasselblad tuning on the camera gives the results a more natural, less processed quality that’s different from what Samsung or Google serve up. The Find X9 Ultra leans into a more expressive design with eco-leather options that give a tactile, character-driven feel.

It starts at Rs 169,999 in India, or about $1,776 at current exchange rates. Not cheap, but then again, you’re getting four cameras, with two of them shooting at 200 megapixels.

Vivo X300 Ultra

Display 6.82-inch LTPO AMOLED, 1440p, 144Hz, Dolby Vision, Zeiss Master Color Chip Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Cameras 200MP main (Sony LYTIA 901 sensor) + 200MP periscope telephoto + 50MP ultrawide Battery 6,600mAh — 100W wired, 40W wireless Durability IP68/IP69

Vivo has been making some of the most interesting camera phones in the world for a couple of years now, and the X300 Ultra continues that streak. Though the upgrades this year are just too incremental.

Our first impression of the phone was that it might as well be called the X200s Ultra. Not to say the improvements aren’t noticeable, but modest compared to the generational leap of its predecessor.

That said, what it does well, it does exceptionally. For instance, the “Raw Lighting” mode dials back the computational processing to produce images that look more like they came from a professional camera than a phone. Saturation is reduced, sharpening is toned down, and the fine details come out more naturally. It’s the kind of feature that’s far more useful day-to-day than any flashy filter.

The main camera uses a Sony LYTIA 901 sensor, and Zeiss handles the colour calibration. The telephoto is a genuine upgrade over last year’s, though we found a noticeable difference only in low light. In good lighting, the gap between the X300 Ultra and X200 Ultra is minimal.

The 6,600mAh cell and 100W wired charging run everything. Available from around €1,999.

Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max

Display 6.9-inch LTPO OLED, 1.5K, 120Hz, Kunlun Glass Chip Kirin 9030S Cameras 50MP main (RYYB sensor, f/1.4–f/4.0 variable aperture) + 200MP periscope telephoto + 40MP ultrawide Battery 6,000mAh — 100W wired Durability IP68/IP69

Huawei is the most complicated name on this list. US trade restrictions have essentially cut the company off from American markets, and using one here comes with real trade-offs — no Google services, limited app support, and software that takes some patience to work around.

With all of that said, the Pura 90 Pro Max’s camera system is genuinely worth knowing about. The Pro Max is the top of the lineup this time, and it leads with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera, a first for any Huawei flagship. The phone also supports up to 20x telephoto video recording using that same lens, putting it in rarefied company on the zoom front.

The main camera uses a variable aperture that physically adjusts like a real camera — ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0 — which gives you more control over depth of field than any fixed-lens phone can match. Huawei calls this its second-generation Red Maple Image technology, designed to maintain natural colours in complex lighting situations like sunsets or firelight, where other phones tend to go strange.

We compared the phone against the Vivo X300 Ultra, and while it delivers a more elegant and refined experience, it sits a step behind on raw display quality and outright performance. At around $1,199, it’s the most affordable phone on this list. Imported that is.

Huawei Pura X Max

Display 7.7-inch inner OLED (4:3 ratio) + 5.4-inch outer display, 120Hz Chip Kirin 9030 Pro Cameras 50MP main with variable aperture + 50MP periscope telephoto +12.5MP ultrawide Battery 5300mAh— 66W wired Build 5.2mm thin unfolded, 11.2mm folded, 229g Durability IP58/IP59

Most foldable phones fold to be taller and narrower, or they flip to be compact. The Pura X Max does something different. It folds horizontally to create a screen that’s wider rather than taller, closer in shape to a compact iPad than a regular phone. It is the industry’s first horizontally wide foldable with a 7.7-inch inner display and a near 4:3 aspect ratio.

Spoiler: the upcoming iPhone Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide might share a similar footprint.

Such a design has a real upside. Watching video, reading, multitasking, editing photos, or anything you’d normally do on a small tablet is much more comfortable on a display shaped like this. The 5.4-inch outer screen is wide enough to handle messages and calls without unfolding. And despite the large displays, Huawei kept the weight to a reasonable 229 grams and the unfolded thickness to just 5.2mm.

The same Google services caveats that apply to the Pura 90 Pro Max apply here, too. And the water resistance rating of IP58/IP59 is a step below what Honor manages on the Magic V6. But as a piece of hardware, thinking differently about the foldable form factor, there’s nothing quite like it.

Honor Magic V6

Display 7.95-inch inner LTPO 2.0 AMOLED, 2172×2352, 120Hz + 6.52-inch outer AMOLED Chip Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Cameras 50MP main + 64MP periscope telephoto + 50MP ultrawide Battery 6,660mAh (global) or 7,150mAh (China) — 80W wired, 66W wireless Durability IP68/IP69 — first foldable to achieve both ratings

Folding phones have always come with compromises you had to accept in exchange for the novelty. The Magic V6, which debuted at MWC 2026, is the clearest sign yet that Honor has figured out how to close that gap.

Our impression of the foldable was that the crease on the inner display is remarkably shallow, even after a week of heavy use. Honor’s new Super Steel design, rated for 500,000 folds, also feels solid and smooth throughout. It measures 8.75mm folded and just 4mm when open.

Where Honor brings real improvement is ingress protection. The Magic V6 is the first foldable phone in the world to earn both IP68 and IP69 ratings. Getting caught in the rain with a foldable has always been a mild source of anxiety. Not anymore, at least with this one.

The Magic V6 also offers an exceptional camera experience for a foldable. The main is a 50MP sensor that captures an incredible amount of detail, even after significant cropping during post-processing. The periscope telephoto lens supports 3x and 6x optical zoom, though, at 6x, AI processing is quite prominent.

What you should know before importing

Importing any of these phones is possible, but not always simple. You’ll want to research band compatibility carefully; not all models support the same 5G and LTE frequencies used in the US, which means you might end up with slower data speeds or limited coverage.

The Huawei devices in particular require workarounds for apps that rely on Google services. And warranty support? You’re largely on your own. But if you’ve ever looked at what’s available at your carrier and thought this is it? Now you know there’s a lot more out there. Just not here.

Vivo X300 Ultra and Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max represent two very different approaches to the ultra-flagship smartphone experience. Vivo focuses on maximum hardware power with a cutting-edge Snapdragon chipset, massive battery, and an ambitious Zeiss-backed camera setup, while Huawei leans toward refined design, polished software, and balanced flagship usability. Both promise premium experiences, but the real difference comes down to performance, cameras, and overall value.

Design and Display

Build and Feel

The Vivo X300 Ultra and Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max both target the premium flagship segment, but they approach design differently. Vivo leans toward a camera-centric identity with Zeiss branding and a slightly more aggressive flagship aesthetic, while Huawei focuses on refinement and elegance with its polished HarmonyOS ecosystem. Both devices feature glass backs, aluminum frames, and IP68/IP69 protection, giving them a premium feel in daily use.

Huawei’s anti-reflective Kunlun Glass gives the display a cleaner outdoor viewing experience, especially under sunlight. Meanwhile, Vivo counters with Armor Glass protection and a more advanced display package. The X300 Ultra also feels more tailored for media enthusiasts thanks to Dolby Vision support and its higher refresh rate implementation.

Display Quality

The Vivo X300 Ultra features a 6.82-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and sharper 1440p resolution. Huawei offers a slightly larger 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display with HDR Vivid and excellent color tuning, but its 120Hz refresh rate and lower pixel density feel slightly behind for a flagship in this category.

Verdict

The Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max delivers a more elegant and balanced flagship experience, but the Vivo X300 Ultra clearly offers the superior display package. Its higher refresh rate, sharper panel, and Dolby Vision support make it more appealing for gaming, streaming, and long-term flagship value.

Specifications Including Battery

Performance

The Vivo X300 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset paired with UFS 4.1 storage, placing it among the fastest Android phones currently available. Heavy gaming, AI processing, and multitasking feel effortless, and the combination of OriginOS 6 with the flagship Qualcomm chip gives the device a very polished, high-performance character.

Huawei’s Kirin 9030S chipset performs well for daily flagship use, and HarmonyOS 6.1 feels highly optimized, but it is unlikely to match Vivo’s raw GPU power and sustained gaming capability. Huawei still delivers excellent fluidity for normal workloads, especially within its own ecosystem.

Battery and Charging

Vivo packs a massive 6600mAh battery with 100W wired and 40W wireless charging, making endurance one of its biggest strengths. Huawei counters with a smaller 6000mAh battery but pushes wireless charging further with 80W support. Vivo feels more practical for heavy users, while Huawei’s wireless charging convenience stands out for premium buyers.

Verdict

The Vivo X300 Ultra takes a comfortable lead in overall hardware performance and battery endurance. Huawei remains efficient and polished, but Vivo simply feels more future-proof for demanding users and power-focused flagship buyers.

Camera

Main and Secondary Lenses

Camera hardware is where both phones become extremely competitive. The Vivo X300 Ultra uses a massive 200MP primary sensor with gimbal stabilization, paired with another 200MP periscope telephoto lens and a 50MP ultrawide sensor. The optional Zeiss zoom lenses further push its photography ambitions into professional territory. Low-light capture and zoom flexibility are expected to be among the best in the industry.

Huawei counters with a versatile triple-camera setup featuring a variable aperture 50MP main sensor, 200MP telephoto lens, and a 40MP ultrawide camera. Huawei’s image processing has historically been among the strongest in mobile photography, especially for dynamic range and natural tones. The variable aperture system also adds more flexibility in different lighting situations.

Selfie Camera

Vivo includes a 50MP autofocus selfie camera capable of 4K recording, while Huawei offers a 13MP ultrawide front camera with autofocus. Vivo clearly delivers more detail and stronger front-camera versatility for creators and video users.

Verdict

The Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max may produce more natural flagship photography in some situations, but the Vivo X300 Ultra offers a more ambitious and technically advanced camera system overall. Its sensor hardware, Zeiss tuning, and extreme zoom flexibility give it the edge for photography enthusiasts.

Pricing

The Vivo X300 Ultra is priced at around $1500 (approximately ₹1,25,000), while the Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max comes in significantly lower at roughly $950 (around ₹89,000). That creates a major gap between the two devices despite both targeting the ultra-premium flagship category.

Vivo justifies its higher price with a stronger chipset, sharper display, larger battery, advanced Zeiss camera system, and higher-end multimedia capabilities. It clearly positions itself as a no-compromise flagship for users who prioritize performance and camera hardware above everything else.

Huawei, however, offers impressive value considering its premium build quality, flagship cameras, advanced wireless charging, and polished software experience. For many buyers, the lower price makes the Pura 90 Pro Max feel like the more balanced purchase. The savings are substantial without sacrificing too much of the flagship experience.

Verdict

The Vivo X300 Ultra is the better ultra-premium flagship, but Huawei delivers stronger value for money. Buyers focused on top-tier hardware may prefer Vivo, while Huawei feels like the smarter purchase for most premium users.

Disclaimer:
Prices are approximate and may vary based on country, region, launch timing, and applicable taxes. Always check whether the listed price is for a China unit or a global/international variant when purchasing.

Conclusion

The Vivo X300 Ultra stands out with its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, dual 200MP camera system, optional Zeiss external zoom lenses, 144Hz LTPO AMOLED display, and huge battery capacity. It is clearly designed for enthusiasts who want maximum hardware performance with very few compromises.

The Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max focuses more on balance and ecosystem refinement. Features like the variable aperture camera, 80W wireless charging, anti-reflective display coating, and HarmonyOS optimization give it a more polished day-to-day personality. Huawei also feels less aggressively focused on specs and more centered around overall flagship usability.

Verdict

The Vivo X300 Ultra is the stronger flagship overall thanks to its superior performance, display technology, battery capacity, and more advanced camera hardware. However, the Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max remains highly competitive because of its lower pricing and refined premium experience. Users wanting the absolute best hardware will likely lean toward Vivo, while Huawei makes more sense for buyers seeking flagship quality without crossing into extreme flagship pricing territory.

Disclaimer: This comparison is based on the specifications provided and is intended for general informational purposes. Actual performance, camera results, battery life, and overall experience may vary depending on real-world usage, software updates, and individual preferences.

Alongside the wide, book-style Pura X Max, Huawei also unveiled its more conventional flagships, the Pura 90 Pro and Pura 90 Pro Max today. The latter is the top-of-the-line model this generation, as there will be no Ultra variant.

Starting with the display, the Huawei Pura 90 Pro features a 6.6-inch display, while the Pro Max stretches that to 6.9 inches. Both have a single punch-hole cutout.

Huawei is still trying to make things visually distinct. The Pro Max adopts what it calls an “emotional color aesthetic,” which has an industry-first dual-color gradient metal frame and a glowing borderless theme. It comes in Orange Ocean, Emerald Lake, Sunset Purple, Dawn Gold, and Obsidian Black.

The standard Pro tones things down slightly with Pink Guava, Orange Soda, Coconut White, and Mulberry Black.

Cameras

As for the camera, the Pura 90 Pro Max leads with a 50MP RYYB main sensor (1/1.28-inch) with OIS, paired with LOFIC tech and a variable aperture ranging from f/1.4 to f/4.0. Huawei claims it offers up to 16 times greater dynamic range than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, alongside significantly improved highlight and shadow detail.

It’s backed by a 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera and a 200MP RYYB periscope telephoto (also 1/1.28-inch), offering 4x optical zoom and up to 8x “optical-quality” zoom. Huawei says the telephoto system pulls in up to five times more light than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, thanks in part to what it calls an industry-first three-in-one super concentrating prism. It is also rated for CIPA 7.0 stabilization.

The standard Pura 90 Pro dials things back slightly but keeps the same core philosophy. It uses a 50MP RYYB main sensor (1/1.28-inch) with OIS and the same variable aperture setup (f/1.4–f/4.0), paired with a 12.5MP RYYB ultra-wide (13mm) and a 50MP periscope telephoto with 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom.

Both phones fall under Huawei’s XMAGE branding and have a Red Maplee multispectral lens. The two also have features like 3D dynamic photos, portrait enhancements, and AI-assisted shooting tools.

Kirin 9030S and AI everywhere

Unlike the Kirin 9030 Pro on the Pura X Max foldable, both devices have the Kirin 9030S processor. The company claims a 200 percent improvement in NPU image understanding, along with gains in AI ISP color processing, telephoto video clarity, and stabilization accuracy.

On the software side, both phones run HarmonyOS 6.1. And AI is a major part of the pitch. Such features include AI pose recommendations, AI-assisted composition, portrait retouching, and one-click photo creation. The Xiaoyi assistant also gets upgrades like real-time pointing recognition and voiceprint detection.

The Pro Max also has Huawei’s Kunlun glass protection, which the company says reduces reflections by 70 percent while significantly improving scratch resistance (up to 16 times) and drop resistance (up to 25 percent).

There’s also support for long-distance voice enhancement, extending usable voice pickup up to 10 meters.

Price and availability

The Pura 90 Pro starts at 5,499 yuan for the 12GB + 256GB model, while the higher-tier (16GB + 1TB) model costs 7,499 yuan. The Pura 90 Pro Max starts at 6,499 yuan and tops out at 8,499 yuan for the 16GB + 1TB model.

On April 20, Huawei will unveil the Pura X Max foldable alongside the Huawei Pura 90 series in China. Ahead of the launch, fresh leaks have surfaced, giving an early look at the Pura 90, 90 Pro and 90 Pro Max. These details outline key differences in design, battery and imaging hardware, setting expectations for Huawei’s next photography-focused flagships.

Huawei Pura 90 series key specs leaked

Huawei Pura 90 series leak

According to tipster Bald Panda, the standard Pura 90 will feature a 6.84-inch 1.5K flat display and a 6,500mAh battery, while maintaining a slim 6.9mm profile and a weight of 203 grams. The Pura 90 Pro is said to adopt a slightly smaller 6.59-inch 1.5K flat screen, paired with a 6,000mAh battery, with thickness increasing to 8.3mm and weight to 219 grams.

At the top end, the Pura 90 Pro Max could arrive with a larger 6.87-inch 1.5K display, a 6,000mAh battery, and a more substantial build measuring 8.5mm thick and weighing 232 grams. These differences suggest Huawei is balancing screen size, battery capacity and form factor across the lineup.

Huawei Pura 90 series leak by DCS

Additional details shared by Digital Chat Station indicate that the Pro and Pro Max models will bring notable camera enhancements. The Pura 90 Pro is expected to feature a 50-megapixel main camera with a large 1/1.28-inch sensor, a 40-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera, along with a multispectral sensor.

The Pura 90 Pro Max could take things further with a similar main and ultra-wide setup, but replace the telephoto unit with a 200-megapixel periscope camera using a large sensor. Both models are tipped to include a new “9 series” chipset, around 6,000mAh batteries, IP68 rating, 2D face recognition, and durable Kunlun glass protection.

Huawei is preparing to launch its next flagship lineup, the Pura 90 series, on April 20. The Pro Max is the top-of-the-line model—there’s no Ultra this time—and Huawei today revealed some camera details about it.

The Pura 90 Pro Max features a 200-megapixel telephoto lens, a first for a Huawei flagship. The company says the camera can “capture everything, near and far.”

Huawei is also extending this capability to video. The phone supports up to 20x telephoto video recording using that same lens. While devices like the Galaxy S26 Ultra already offer similar zoom levels, Huawei’s emphasis here suggests strong optimization.

Moreover, the company also announced an AI posture recommendation feature for the Pura 90 series. If you tend to rely on the same poses in photos, the system can suggest alternatives. It’s another example of how smartphone makers are trying to make photography feel more guided rather than purely manual.

Huawei Pura 90 Pro Max Specifications

According to previous reports, the Pura 90 Pro Max features a 50-megapixel main camera with a 1-inch sensor and a variable aperture.

The company is also continuing with its second-generation Red Maple Image technology, which reproduces more natural colors. This is particularly relevant in scenes with complex lighting—such as sunsets or firelight—where maintaining accurate tones is often difficult.

On the hardware side, the device is expected to run on the Kirin 9030 Pro chip. It may also ship with the new HarmonyOS 6.1.

As for looks, the Pura 90 Pro Max will come in Obsidian Black, Dawn Gold, Purple Sunset, Orange Ocean, and Emerald Lake. All variants except Obsidian Black and Dawn Gold will feature a gradient finish. Storage options are expected to include 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, 16GB/512GB, and 16GB/1TB configurations.

We should learn more about the new phones in the lead-up to launch.

Huawei today confirmed that its next-generation Pura series will debut on April 20 in China, where the company will unveil the Pura 90 Pro and Pura 90 Pro Max.
In the lead-up to the launch, Huawei has already shown off the design of two phones, and, to its credit, it’s not playing things too safe.

Both models feature a gradient finish across all of their color options, except black and white. This isn’t the first time Huawei has used gradients on its phone colors. The P20 and P30 series also experimented with similar finishes across select colorways.

Around the back, there’s a rounded triangular camera module, paired with flat sides that give the phones a more structured, almost industrial look.

The teasers confirm that both the Pro and Pro Max share this overall design language, though the silhouette doesn’t stray too far from last year’s Pura 80 lineup.

Huawei Pura 90 Series Specifications (Expected)

On the hardware side, the Pura 90 Pro and Pro Max are both expected to use either the Kirin 9030 or the Kirin 9030 Pro processor. The phones will likely run HarmonyOS 6.1 out of the box.

Huawei may also bring its HyperSpace Memory technology to the series. Previously introduced on the Mate 80 Pro Max, it focuses on improving memory efficiency, allowing a 16GB RAM configuration to deliver an experience closer to 20GB through compression.

As expected, cameras remain a major focus for the Pura lineup. The Pura 90 series is rumored to feature a second-generation Maple Imaging System, along with a large 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens.

`We should learn more about the new phones in the lead-up to launch.
