Let’s be entirely honest with ourselves for a second: most of us do not need a robotic, AI-powered, pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) 4K webcam to join a morning Zoom sync. The built-in laptop camera will technically suffice to prove you are awake and at your desk.

Obsbot’s Tiny series has been around since 2020, effectively pioneering the AI-tracking webcam space, but the Tiny 3 series feels like a culmination of every wild idea the company has ever had, crammed into an impossibly small chassis.

At $349 for the Tiny 3 and $199 for the Tiny 3 Lite, these are premium devices aimed squarely at content creators, streamers, remote educators, and office workers who simply refuse to look anything less than spectacular.

But after a month of having a tiny robot track my every move across my home office, I’ve realized that the magic of the Tiny 3 isn’t just in its spec sheet; it’s in how seamlessly it fades into the background while doing a dozen incredibly complex things at once.

Here is my deep dive into the Obsbot Tiny 3 and the Tiny 3 Lite.

Design and Hardware

When I first unboxed the Tiny 3, I was genuinely surprised. The name is finally, aggressively accurate. Measuring just 1.5 by 1.5 by 1.9 inches and weighing a mere 2.2 ounces (63 grams), the Tiny 3 is absurdly small. It is 48% more compact and 34% lighter than its predecessor, the Tiny 2. Despite this, it feels incredibly premium.

The main camera module and the two-axis gimbal are encased in a dark gray metal alloy that stays cool to the touch even after hours of continuous 4K streaming.

The Tiny 3 Lite, interestingly enough, goes in a slightly different direction. It is actually a bit larger in dimensions (1.6 by 1.6 by 2.3 inches) and adopts a softer, more minimalistic design language. Where the Tiny 3 looks sharp and industrial, the Lite feels a bit more approachable and rounded.

But the biggest physical divergence between the two lies in how you mount them. This is a point of slight contention for me. The Tiny 3 comes with a detachable magnetic base that snaps onto a separate, included screen clip.

The magnet is incredibly strong, and the modularity is great if you want to pop the camera off and snap it onto a tripod or a desktop stand. However, I can’t help but feel that if it had an internal, integrated clamp too, it would have made life just a bit easier for laptop users on the go. You have to keep track of two pieces.

The Tiny 3 Lite, on the other hand, features an integrated clamp. It’s permanently attached to the base, meaning you can just unfold it and slap it onto any laptop or monitor immediately.

It’s less flexible if you want to do complex tripod rigging, but for everyday use, it’s arguably more convenient. Still, the Tiny 3’s magnetic snap has a satisfying, premium tactility to it that the Lite lacks.

Video Quality

Let’s talk about the glass and the silicon, because this is where the $349 price tag of the Tiny 3 starts to justify itself.

The flagship Tiny 3 is packing a massive 1/1.28-inch 50-megapixel CMOS sensor. For context, that is a larger sensor than you’ll find in many premium smartphones, let alone webcams. It boasts a dual native ISO that scales all the way up to 12,800, and an f/1.8 aperture. It shoots in 4K at 30fps, or, if you want buttery smooth motion, 1080p at a staggering 120 frames per second.

In practice, the image quality is nothing short of breathtaking. I have my desk set up in a room where light hits me from all sides, including right from the ceiling. Usually, this kind of omnidirectional lighting makes things incredibly messy for most devices, as they struggle to cut through the glare and balance the frame properly.

But the Tiny 3, utilizing its DCG (Dual Conversion Gain) HDR technology, does an amazing job of managing this chaos. It handles the light so well that I haven’t faced a single issue with overlighting or harsh blasts of glare on my face. It balances the exposure so effortlessly that it looks like I have a perfectly calibrated, professional studio lighting rig.

The natural depth of field is also a massive win. Because the sensor is so large and the aperture so wide, you get actual, optical background blur. It’s not the aggressive, artificial cut-out you get from Zoom or Google Meet; it’s a gentle, natural fall-off that makes you pop off the screen.

The Tiny 3 Lite steps down to a 1/2-inch 48-megapixel sensor. It still shoots 4K at 30fps and 1080p at 120fps, and it still looks fantastic in good lighting. But in low light when I’m relying on the glow of my monitors and a single desk lamp, the difference becomes apparent.

The Tiny 3 remains clean and sharp, while the Tiny 3 Lite introduces a bit of static-like noise into the background. The Lite’s maximum ISO is capped at 6,400, and while it’s still vastly superior to your laptop’s built-in camera, it doesn’t quite have the night-vision-esque magic of the premium model. But for most users, it is more than enough.

Gimbal and AI Tracking

The defining feature of the Obsbot lineup is the mechanical gimbal, and the AI Tracking 2.0 system on the Tiny 3 series is the best I have ever used.

Both cameras feature a two-axis gimbal that can pan up to 150 degrees mechanically and tilt 90 degrees. When you turn on auto-tracking, the camera physically moves to keep you in the center of the frame. There is no robotic jerking or mechanical whining; it just glides. I can stand up from my desk, pace around my office, and the camera follows me seamlessly.

Obsbot gives you an absurd amount of control over this. You can set it to track your full body, your upper body, or just keep a tight crop on your face. But the new Object Tracking feature is what truly blew my mind. Inside the Obsbot Center software, you can draw a bounding box around anything: a coffee mug, a phone, a toy, a product you are demonstrating, and the camera will lock onto it.

If you’re a YouTuber showcasing products or a teacher demonstrating crafts from a top-down view, this feature is honestly fantastic. However, it can occasionally be a hit or miss experience, but I believe this could be improved with a software update.

The Tiny 3 also supports gesture controls (holding up your hand to start tracking, making an ‘L’ shape to zoom). It also includes voice controls as well. Saying “Hi, Tiny” wakes it up, “Track me” initiates the gimbal, and “Sleep, Tiny” points the camera straight down at its base, physically cutting off the video feed for guaranteed privacy.

Audio

Built-in webcam microphones usually aren’t the best, but the audio on the Tiny 3 is actually a solid step up. Both the Tiny 3 and the Tiny 3 Lite use a new three-microphone setup (one omnidirectional and two directional), and the software does a good job of processing the sound for everyday use.

You get a few different audio modes depending on what you need. “Pure Audio Mode” leaves the audio raw without extra processing, which is nice if you want to tweak the sound yourself later. “Spatial Audio Mode” captures stereo sound, so if you move around the room, people on the other end can hear which direction you’re speaking from.

I find myself using “Directional Mode” the most. My room environment isn’t always perfectly quiet. I have a noisy fan, and sometimes I get some noise bleeding in from outside, though it’s pretty quiet when I just have the AC running. Directional Mode does a really good job of focusing on my voice and filtering out those background sounds. Even when the fan is running, it isolates my voice well enough that the people on my calls don’t seem to notice the background hum.

The Tiny 3 also has a Voice Tracking feature. The camera uses the microphones to figure out where a voice is coming from and physically turns to face the speaker. If you have two people in the same room sharing the webcam, it just automatically pans back and forth to whoever is talking at the moment, which makes group calls a lot easier to manage.

Software

To get the most out of these cameras, you need to use the Obsbot Center app (available for Windows and macOS). The software is dense, but beautifully laid out.

If you just want to plug and play, you can leave it in Lite mode. But if you click over to Pro, you get all the controls. You can manually adjust the exposure curves, tweaking shadows, midtones, and highlights independently. You can manually set the white balance by adjusting the red and blue gain. You can set up to three preset gimbal angles, allowing you to snap the camera from a wide shot of your room to a tight crop of your face with a single click.

Obsbot has also built in some virtual camera features, like background replacement and artificial bokeh. The background replacement is significantly better than the native tools in Zoom or Teams, handling the edges around my hair with impressive accuracy.

It is also worth noting that the flagship Tiny 3 has a couple of software tricks the Lite lacks, specifically Desk Mode and Whiteboard Mode. Desk Mode automatically tilts the camera down and digitally flips the image so you can show off documents or sketches on your desk without the image being upside down for your viewers. If you don’t need this, the Lite becomes an even more appealing option.

Final Verdict

After a month of living with both of these cameras, I am thoroughly impressed. Obsbot hasn’t just made a good webcam; they have built a genuinely exciting piece of consumer technology.

If you are a content creator, a streamer, a high-level executive, or someone who simply demands the absolute best image quality and low-light performance available, the Obsbot Tiny 3 ($349) is the undisputed king of the hill.

The 1/1.28-inch sensor is a marvel, the HDR processing is flawless, and the sheer amount of technology packed into a chassis the size of a golf ball is a masterclass in hardware engineering. Yes, I wish the magnetic mount had an integrated clamp for laptop convenience, and yes, it is painfully expensive. But it is the best webcam I have ever tested.

However, if you are looking for value, the Obsbot Tiny 3 Lite ($199) is the real scene-stealer here. For $150 less, you are getting the exact same world-class AI tracking, the exact same incredible triple-mic audio system, and the exact same 1080p 120fps capability.

You lose a bit of low-light fidelity due to the smaller sensor, and you miss out on the Desk/Whiteboard modes, but for 95% of users, the video quality is still going to blow away anything else in the sub-$200 price bracket. Plus, the integrated clamp design, while making the camera slightly larger, is undeniably practical for everyday laptop use.

I’ve used my fair share of PTZ cameras over the years, but the Obsbot Tail 2 is the first one that made me pause and think, “Wow, this might actually replace having someone behind the lens.” It’s a bold claim for a camera that costs $1,199, nearly double the price of its predecessor, the Tail Air.

But the Tail 2 also brings a host of serious upgrades: optical zoom, a larger sensor, AI tracking that borders on uncanny, and a new fourth axis of movement: Rotate. The result is a device that, in the right hands (or even solo hands), can turn everyday video recording into something that looks professionally directed.

PTZR in Practice: Camera That Physically Adapts

The “R” in PTZR stands for Rotate, and it’s not just a gimmick. Being able to flip the lens into portrait orientation opens up more flexibility for shooting vertical content. I don’t shoot much for YouTube or Instagram personally, but I did try the vertical shooting mode during my tests, and it worked flawlessly.

The camera physically rotated itself into 9:16 without needing to remount it, and the framing stayed level and stable the whole time. If you’re making content for Reels, TikTok, or Shorts, this is an incredibly useful feature that saves time and keeps resolution intact.

The build is solid, about 1.06 kg, so not featherweight but still portable. I carried it to my office for controlled tests and also to the playgrounds where I filmed local cricket, football, and basketball matches. In every environment, the Tail 2 felt confident and stable on a tripod, handling movement and light changes smoothly.

Tracking on the Field

Where the Tail 2 really impressed me was in its ability to track live sports. I tested it extensively during local cricket, football, and basketball sessions. In cricket, the Tail 2 tracked the bowler’s run-up and the batsman’s movements with near-perfect consistency. The ball’s path was a bit fast to track precisely, but the human subjects stayed perfectly in frame throughout.

In football, the experience was slightly more mixed but still largely positive. When the player with the ball stayed within the camera’s view, the Tail 2 tracked beautifully. However, footballers tend to move unpredictably and quickly, often into blind spots or out of the gimbal’s view. In those moments, the camera briefly lost the subject. But what stood out to me was how quickly it reacquired tracking the moment the player re-entered the frame. That sort of recovery speed is crucial in fast-paced environments.

Basketball was a more limited test. I only had one player to follow, and it was shot outdoors. Even so, the Tail 2 handled the movement quite well, tracking the player consistently as they dribbled and made moves across the court. Occasionally, when the ball or player moved too quickly or jumped high out of frame, tracking would drop momentarily, but as soon as the subject came back into view, the camera locked back on without delay. It worked well for this type of solo training scenario.

I also experimented with object tracking, focusing specifically on the football and basketball. The Tail 2 was able to lock onto the ball and follow it for most of its journey, until the ball went too high or out of frame. Again, the camera picked it back up as soon as it came into view, but you do notice the brief interruption. If you’re using zoom to frame in tighter, you’ll feel those lapses more. But in ultrawide framing, tracking was much more consistent, making it better suited for general action coverage.

That said, even while zoomed in, I was surprised by how sharp the focus remained. The Tail 2’s autofocus locked on confidently, and there was very little breathing during tracking, which is often a weakness in many PTZ systems. It made zoomed-in subject shots feel professional and deliberate, not jittery or reactive.

In normal conditions though, especially in office or studio setups, the tracking has been absolutely flawless. During testing indoors, I walked out of the frame and the camera paused, patiently waiting. As soon as I re-entered the room, it immediately picked me up again and resumed tracking without delay. Just to check its loyalty, I sent someone else into the frame while I stayed out, and the Tail 2 ignored them completely. It’s impressively selective and really lives up to its “Only Me” tracking feature. In controlled environments, it performs like a tireless, focused camera operator that doesn’t get distracted.

I wasn’t able to record any full-scale event sessions with the Tail 2 yet, but based on how it handled different conditions in my testing, I don’t see any reason it wouldn’t perform well. The tracking, framing, and reliability all give me confidence that it could be used for weddings, seminars, stage performances, or other live events without much issue.

Optical Zoom That’s Actually Useful

The zoom performance on the Tail 2 genuinely surprised me. One evening, I was recording a sunset and decided to zoom in on a group of birds flying near the horizon. Even though I wasn’t using tracking at that moment, the camera’s autofocus nailed the shot. The detail was impressive, and focus remained locked on the birds without any noticeable hunting or lag. It gave me a real sense of how stable and refined the optics are, even without AI assistance.

I also tested local short-format cricket games while zoomed in from the boundary, and the Tail 2 handled it like a champ. Whether I focused on the batsman, the wicketkeeper, or any fielder in the frame, the autofocus stayed fast and accurate. It never felt like the camera was second-guessing or slipping focus, which made those tight shots usable and sharp. That made it feel like using a proper prosumer camcorder, not just a webcam on a motorized head.

For general-purpose filming or interviews, the Auto Zoom feature is a lifesaver. It maintains consistent framing as you move closer or farther from the camera.

Image Quality

The Tail 2 sports a 1/1.5” CMOS sensor and a fast f/1.8 to f/3.0 lens, giving it excellent low-light handling and a cinematic look in well-lit scenes. In my office tests, the footage looked crisp even under ambient lighting. On the playground, harsh daylight and shadow zones didn’t throw it off. Exposure was even, colors were balanced, and highlights weren’t blown.

I also toggled HDR for some sunset shots and was impressed by how much detail it preserved in both sky and foreground. There’s little to no oversaturation, and Obsbot’s default color profile is quite natural. You can tweak sharpness and saturation in the app if you like, but most people won’t need to touch it.

Connectivity and Power

The Tail 2 is just as strong on the hardware front. I mostly used USB-C and HDMI outputs for recording and streaming tests. It also supports 3G-SDI and NDI|HX3 over Ethernet, which opens the door for more advanced multi-cam setups. If you’re running a production from a central console, this camera can slot right in with minimal friction.

Battery life holds up well. I consistently managed around 5 hours, enough to cover a full football or basketball match without issues. If you need extra time, using a power bank is always an option. The device can get noticeably hot during outdoor use though.

Audio-wise, there’s no internal mic, so you’ll need an external source. I plugged in a lapel mic and got good, clean sound. Line-in from a recorder or mixer also worked without latency. It’s a fair trade. No built-in mic means no scratch audio, but you get far better input options for proper production.

Control and Software

The Obsbot Start app makes setup and control intuitive once you’ve done it a couple of times. The mobile app lets you adjust exposure, focus, tracking mode, and even steering the gimbal manually. I saved a few presets for different camera angles during sports, and switching between them with the remote was seamless.

That said, there is a learning curve, especially if you want to dive into manual settings or network streaming. For casual users, it might feel like a lot, but for creators and event professionals, it’s worth the time investment.

The software overall is reliable with the features it offers, though it is not without flaws. Obsbot has made significant improvements over the past year, yet some basic connection issues remain. In my experience, the camera would not connect directly via Wi-Fi. I had to first use Cellular mode by connecting to the device’s hotspot and then manually switch to my own Wi-Fi network. After that, the Wi-Fi search started working, but the underlying problem persists. The camera often fails to detect networks, and the Wi-Fi search screen can freeze. This feels like something that could be resolved with a future OTA update.

There is also a small glitch when playing back recorded videos through the app. Occasionally, after a video ends, the back button does not show up. I noticed this happening on iOS, though I am not sure if Android devices face the same issue. From what I have seen, most of Obsbot’s software bugs seem to affect iOS more than Android.

Final Verdict

The Obsbot Tail 2 is a powerful and flexible tool for content creators, educators, and event videographers. It doesn’t just follow you. It frames you smartly, adjusts focus like a proper camera, and brings genuinely useful hardware connectivity that most consumer devices ignore. My field testing in cricket, football, and basketball scenarios showed me both the limits and the promise of AI tracking in a production-grade camera. It isn’t flawless. Fast action and blind spots still challenge it, but its recovery and adaptability are impressive.

If you’re filming dynamic content solo and want results that look directed without hiring a crew, this camera is an easy recommendation. It might be overkill for casual users, but for those who care about sharp, intelligent video without the hassle of manual camera work, the Tail 2 is worth the investment. And if you’re someone who covers live events like weddings, seminars, church services, or stage shows, this is an excellent piece of gear to have in your kit. If you need something more dynamic, the Tiny SE is the better pick.

AI Tracking and Gesture Controls

AI tracking has always been one of Obsbot’s strong suits, and both of these webcams showcase it well. The Tiny SE offers multiple tracking modes, including upper body tracking, lower body tracking, headless tracking, and even hand tracking.

I found the hand-tracking mode particularly useful for demonstrations, raising my hand in front of the camera prompted it to follow my movements, making it great for online presentations. There’s also a Zone Tracking feature, where you can set a designated area for the camera to track within. This was handy when I wanted the camera to stay focused on a specific part of my workspace instead of following me everywhere.

The Meet SE doesn’t have physical tracking but still supports AI Auto Framing. It automatically adjusts the frame when I move, ensuring that I stay centered without needing to adjust the camera manually. Both webcams also include gesture controls, allowing me to enable auto-framing or zoom-in with a simple hand movement. The biggest challenge with budget webcams is how they handle low-light environments, and this is where the Tiny SE and Meet SE shine. Both use a 1/2.8-inch stacked CMOS sensor with a large f/1.8 aperture, meaning they capture more light than your typical cheap webcam. In dimly lit conditions, they performed better than their predecessors, producing a clear image with minimal noise.

Both cameras work seamlessly with streaming tools like OBS Studio and integrate fully with Elgato’s Stream Deck, so you can adjust settings on the fly. Firmware updates are also managed through the software, ensuring you always have the latest features and performance improvements.

Audio and Microphone Quality

Both webcams come with built-in noise-reduction microphones, which are decent for everyday calls and streaming. They’re not going to replace a dedicated microphone setup, but they do a good job at filtering out background noise.

For professional recordings, I’d still recommend using a separate microphone, but for casual Zoom calls or quick recordings, the built-in mics are perfectly usable.

Privacy Features

If you’re mindful of privacy, you’ll appreciate the built-in features on both models. The Tiny SE allows you to physically tilt the lens downward to block the view or switch to sleep mode, displaying a black screen. The Meet SE, on the other hand, comes with a magnetic privacy cover that snaps into place, ensuring the camera is completely blocked when not in use. Both models also have LED indicators, so you’ll always know when the camera is active.

Which One Should You Buy?

Deciding between the Tiny SE and Meet SE depends on your specific needs. If you require a webcam that can track movement dynamically, the Tiny SE is the better choice. Its AI-powered gimbal ensures that you stay in the frame even when moving around, making it ideal for teachers, presenters, and content creators who need flexibility. At $99, it’s an excellent value for a PTZ webcam with advanced tracking.

If portability and affordability are your main priorities, the Meet SE is a great option. It provides solid video quality, AI auto-framing, and strong low-light performance, all for just $69. While it lacks physical movement, it still delivers a feature-rich experience for remote workers, students, and casual streamers.

Both webcams offer impressive performance for their price, making them solid choices for anyone looking to upgrade their video setup without spending a fortune. Whether you’re streaming, teaching, or working remotely, Obsbot’s latest budget-friendly options provide a significant step up from traditional built-in laptop webcams. If you want a webcam that actively follows your movements, the Tiny SE is worth the extra cost. The Obsbot Meet 2 is extremely compact and lightweight, measuring 45 x 36 x 36.7mm and weighing just 67.5g with the mount. Available in three stylish colors, Space Grey, Cloud White, and Aurora Green, it features a minimalist design ideal for travelers, students, or those with limited desk space.

I got the Space Grey version but didn’t find it as appealing. Personally, I think the green color stands out as the best option among the three, though that’s just my preference.

The webcam also features a magnetic mount for quick and easy adjustments, and with its UNC 1/4-20 interface, it can be mounted on a standard tripod for more advanced setups. While the camera is made of plastic, it feels sturdy enough for regular use, and its compact size doesn’t compromise its functionality. It also includes a magnetic privacy cover that can be attached to the lens for added security.

During my usage, I noticed some scratches on the wider area of the lens. I’m not sure if the lens is particularly prone to scratching or if it’s due to my heavy usage, but I wanted to mention it.

Setup and Compatibility

Setting up the Meet 2 is as simple as plug-and-play. It connects via USB-C, and no additional drivers are required for basic use. However, for those wanting to unlock the camera’s full potential, Obsbot Center software is recommended.

The software allows you to fine-tune settings such as exposure, white balance, and resolution and gives you access to AI-powered features like auto-framing and gesture control.

It also includes Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) to keep subjects in focus during calls or streams. However, in 1080p mode, the camera tends to hunt for focus more often, an issue not present in other formats.

The camera comes with 4x digital zoom, so you can zoom in on specific details without significant loss of quality. However, keep in mind that digital zoom is not as precise as optical zoom, so it’s best used sparingly.

The webcam also supports dual omnidirectional microphones that feature noise reduction and auto gain control, ensuring clear audio even in moderately noisy environments. While the built-in mics are adequate for video calls, professionals looking for studio-quality sound may want to invest in an external microphone.

Design and Build Quality

The OBSBOT Tail Air is the company’s most expensive product in the webcam space to date. To make sure that they tick all the boxes, OBSBOT has paid meticulous attention to the design, form, and function of the product.

The overall size of the OBSBOT Air is similar to that of an average soda can. The body is built out of metal and has a matte finish to it, which makes it easier to grip and hold, and also doesn’t attract a lot of fingerprints either.

Another key point to note about the camera is its weight. At just 12 ounces, the camera unit is extremely lightweight. Apart from that, the top half of the camera unit, which also houses the image sensor can be folded, thus making it very convenient to store it in a backpack and carry around during travel.

Talking about the camera itself, it does have all the necessary ports needed on a portable webcam/live stream camera. You have a slot for an SD card, a micro-HDMI port, a USB C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. On the bottom side of the camera, you’ll be able to see the charging dock and also a 20-screw ¼-inch thread that can used to easily mount the camera on tripods. The front-facing section of the camera has an LED strip that indicates any errors or the current camera mode, as well as an array of 3 LED dots, which will indicate the remaining charge percentage on the camera.

Setup

To make full use of the OBSBOT Tail Air, the company has released two software companion tools: the “OBSBOT Start” app for Android and iOS, as well as the “OBSBOT Center” app for the Windows operating system.

The OBSBOT Tail Air is also capable of 4K video recording at 30 frames per second and 1080p full-HD video recording at 60 frames per second.

The built-in TOF sensor (Time of Flight) allows the camera to accurately measure the distance between the lens and the subject being recorded, thus helping to adjust parameters such as brightness and focus for the best results.

Talking about the drawbacks, I’ve noticed that the Android app tends to perform better compared to the iOS version. The iOS app often encounters errors, like the frustrating issue of recording not turning on. In contrast, I’ve experienced smooth operation with the Android app and haven’t encountered similar issues. I think the OBSBOT team should prioritize improving the software to enhance user-friendliness and intuitiveness.

Multi-Camera “Studio Setup” Experience

The multi-camera “Studio Setup” experience of the OBSBOT Tail Air deserves a special mention.

So, the camera has support for the NDI (Network Device Interface) standard, which utilizes local IP networking to help users stream using multiple OBSBOT Tail Air cameras at once.

Enabling the NDI feature on the OBSBOT Tail Air would require a paid subscription to the service, and of course, access to multiple OBSBOT Tail Air cameras.

Once the subscription is availed, you can connect up to 3 OBSBOT Tail Air cameras to your NDI-supported router and stream high-quality videos in HX3 format.
