After five months of running the One UI 8.5 beta program, Samsung finally began rolling out the stable version in May, starting with the Galaxy S25 series. The rollout initially covered premium Galaxy S and Galaxy Z series smartphones, but, as always, Samsung wasted no time bringing the update to more affordable phones.

The company confirmed that the update would be released for a total of 44 devices via posts on Samsung Newsroom. In a little over a month, Samsung has released the update for all of those confirmed devices.

While the One UI 8.5 update continues to roll out to more devices, Samsung has already begun preparations for One UI 9.0, which is based on Android 17. The beta program is already live for the Galaxy S26 series, with more devices expected to join soon, while the stable release is expected in July 2026.

The stable One UI 8.5 update has been rolling out since May 6, 2026, and it has already reached dozens of Galaxy devices. There may still be a few devices in the queue, but unfortunately, many older Galaxy devices will miss out on this big software upgrade.

Samsung has released the One UI 8.5 update to devices ranging from flagship to entry-level, launched in 2023 and later, but many devices launched before 2022 won’t be upgraded to the latest software, as per a report from Sammobile. The list also includes flagship phones such as the Galaxy S22, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Many Samsung users believed that the One UI 8.5 update would roll out to every Galaxy phone and tablet running One UI 8.0, as both releases are based on Android 16. But the company may have opted for a different rollout strategy this year, and it’s likely that the Galaxy S22 series and many devices launched before 2023 won’t be upgraded to One UI 8.5.

It’s a little surprising that Samsung actually started developing One UI 8.5 for the Galaxy S22, as test builds were spotted on servers, but the company later halted development. There has been no new test build since early April. The same thing has happened to several Galaxy devices launched in 2022.

In a press release on Samsung’s Germany Newsroom, the company announced that the One UI 8.5 update would be available on flagship devices as far back as the Galaxy S23 and on the last three generations of Galaxy A-series phones. While it doesn’t include the list of eligible devices, it confirms that One UI 8.5 is not coming to older phones launched in 2022 or before, at least most of them.

Technically, Samsung has already fulfilled the promised number of OS upgrades for the Galaxy S22 and other older devices that may not receive the One UI 8.5 update. The S22 launched with Android 12 and promised four generations of Android OS upgrades. That means Android 16 was the final one. And the company doesn’t guarantee subsequent updates for such devices, even if the OS version remains the same.

Still, many users would expect to receive One UI 8.5, especially since it brings a host of new features and significant improvements. However, that might only lead to disappointment for older Galaxy users.

Samsung hasn’t revealed why it won’t release the One UI 8.5 update to many older Galaxy devices, but a strong possibility is optimization challenges. Previously, it was easy to port a new skin (let’s say One UI 6.1) to an older device simply because it shared the exact same core foundation as the previous build (such as One UI 6.0). But the same doesn’t apply to One UI 8.5.

One UI 8.5 is based on Android 16 QPR2, whereas One UI 8.0 uses the original Android 16 at its core. QPR2 is a new branch of Android 16 that introduces a number of underlying code changes, updated APIs, and newer developer tools. These platform changes and optimization challenges may be why Samsung may have decided not to upgrade all older devices to One UI 8.5.

The stable One UI 8.5 rollout is gaining momentum, as the update has gone live for a bunch of Galaxy devices. Samsung began its global rollout on May 11, starting with premium models like the Galaxy S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Galaxy Z TriFold. But it didn’t take long to expand it to cheaper models like the Galaxy A16.

Samsung spent 5 months in beta testing, which was quite longer than usual, and made us wonder whether this delay would also impact the One UI 9 release. But fortunately, things are looking back on track as the stable update has already been released for over a dozen Galaxy devices.

The Galaxy S25 phones were the first recipients of the rollout, but it was surprising to see phones like the Galaxy S25 Edge receiving the update at the same time, despite not being a part of the beta program. Just a few days later, the update began rolling out to mid-range phones, starting with the Galaxy A56 and Galaxy A36.

Some premium phones are still waiting for the One UI 8.5 update as I write this post, but that isn’t delaying the rollout for mid-range and cheaper models. In fact, the rollout pace has gotten quicker. Just this week, the One UI 8.5 update has reached many A and M series phones, including Galaxy M56, Galaxy A35, Galaxy A55, and Galaxy A16 5G.

Samsung has recently started to roll out the stable One UI 8.5 update globally. It is now available for over a dozen Galaxy devices, with more to receive it in the coming days and weeks. 1. Quick Panel receives its biggest upgrade in years

Quick Panel has received numerous upgrades in recent years, but this one is big, especially for those who like customization. One UI 8.5 removes almost all restrictions on Quick Panel customizations, allowing users to drag, resize, and remove any slider, toggle, or widget.

You can even change the sliders from standard bars to vertical bars. Further, major interface widgets like media player, brightness sliders, and volume sliders can be shrunk or expanded.

For comparison, One UI 8.0 only allows reordering specific sections. It doesn’t even let us remove or reposition Smart View and Device Control tiles. One UI 8.5 offers absolute freedom to customize the Quick Panel as you need. You can even remove all sections and tiles for a completely blank layout.

2. Floating tab bar gives modern aesthetics

One UI 8.5 replaces the traditional bottom navigation bar with a modern pill-shaped UI element, officially called the “Floating tab bar.” It’s a compact element with translucent matte appearance and a smooth gradient blur.

Unlike the previous navigation bar, the floating tab bar is detached from the edges of the screen. It appears to dynamically float directly above the on-screen content, offering a premium aesthetic and improved one-handed reachability.

Samsung offers a floating tab bar UI across many of its first-party applications, including Phone, Gallery, and Samsung TV Plus. Third-party developers have also started integrating the modern floating bar into their apps, pushing towards a unified user experience.

3. Galaxy AI becomes a lot more useful

Samsung phones offer the best AI experience, and it only keeps getting better with each upgrade. The latest software, One UI 8.5, adds the “Call screening” feature within Call Assist. It can automatically pick up calls and ask the caller why they’re calling.

Even if the AI picks up the call, you can still talk to the caller any time, or switch to the Text call. This is a great way to filter spam calls, and also helps avoid unnecessary calls when you’re busy.

One UI 8.5 also features an upgraded Photo Assist, which lets users edit photos with AI without needing to save each iteration. And there’s a history button at the top-right corner to see past generations. The Sketch to image feature has also been replaced with a more versatile Create tab, which lets you change backgrounds or add objects using descriptive text prompts rather than drawing them.

Unfortunately, Galaxy AI is limited to a small subset of Galaxy devices, particularly the high-end phones released in recent years. That’s because of hardware limitations.

4. Seamless file sharing with Apple devices via AirDrop support

One UI 8.5 finally removes the file sharing complexities that have existed between Android and Apple devices for years by making Quick Share compatible with Apple’s AirDrop. So, you can now seamlessly share files with Apple devices in a few easy clicks.

To enable this new feature, navigate to Settings > Connected devices > Quick Share and enable Share with Apple devices. When you want to share a file, go to Settings > AirDrop on your Apple device, tap Everyone for 10 minutes, then start sending files.

5. More lock screen customizations

One UI 8.0 already offers rich lock-screen customization, but it has just gone a level up with One UI 8.5. The new software automatically adjusts the placement of people and pets around the clock and widgets for a perfect fit. You can now also preview and apply live weather effects directly from the wallpaper preview screen.

One UI 8.5 rollout is about to begin, and dozens of Galaxy models are lined up to receive this feature-rich upgrade that doesn’t look like an incremental upgrade at all. It brings numerous visual upgrades, new features, and expanded customization options that really level up the software experience.

Among the long list of changes coming to One UI 8.5, there are five features I am most excited about. I really wish Samsung would bring them to the majority of eligible devices.

1. Modern Liquid Glass interface with smoother animations

One UI 8.5 introduces Liquid Glass design for the first time on Galaxy devices. We know where the inspiration comes from (hello, Apple). The updated design language emphasizes transparency, floating surfaces, rounded controls, and soft depth effects across core apps and the system UI, making One UI feel more premium and modern.

Part of this new design language includes floating navigation bars with semi-transparent panels and more pronounced blur and shadow layering to create a “glass” feel. You’ll see it in the Settings app and first-party apps like Dialer, Gallery, and Calculator, replacing the traditional flat, rectangular navigation bar. The back button and other controls appear as separated floating elements, allowing more room for content.

The new Liquid Glass design is most prominent in Samsung’s own apps, but other areas, including notifications, widgets, and the control center, also receive a subtle glass-style treatment.

2. Fully customizable Quick Panel

The Quick Panel in One UI 8.5 is receiving its biggest customization update yet. You can now move tiles and widgets wherever you want, resize them, or change their orientation to create a layout that is perfect for you. You can even remove every toggle to get an almost empty panel.

Brightness and volume sliders are also part of the latest changes, with the ability to switch between horizontal and portrait-style layouts. You can customize the panel however you like instead of using Samsung’s default layout. The panel can become messy if you over-customize, but Samsung’s got you covered. You can easily reset to the default layout.

3. Calling gets a major AI upgrade

One UI 8.5 brings major upgrades to calling, now allowing the phone to automatically answer unknown or suspected spam calls. The AI assistant asks the caller’s purpose, shows you a live transcript, and lets you decide whether to pick up or mark as spam. This is a big step up from the manual Bixby Text Call, helping you avoid interruptions from robocalls or telemarketers.

You can also enable the auto answer with AI feature to let the device automatically answer calls after a specific delay (5-30 seconds) and provide a live text transcript. This is particularly useful when you are busy or have Do Not Disturb enabled, allowing you to see the caller’s query via a live transcript before even picking up the call.

One UI 8.5 also introduces a direct voicemail feature that lets callers leave a voice message directly on your device rather than a carrier server. You can see the live transcript of the voicemail as it is being recorded in real-time.

Even during a normal call, you can see real-time call options, making it easier to follow in loud environments. Another small but useful upgrade is that the Now Bar shows a dedicated counter for missed calls, making it easier to track without unlocking the device.

4. A new Creative Studio app for AI creativity

Samsung has added a new Creative Studio app in One UI 8.5, which is basically a central hub for generative AI creativity. The app lets users create wallpapers, stickers, greeting cards, invitations, and profile cards with simple sketches, existing photos, or text prompts.

The app supports multiple aspect ratios (such as 16:9 and 4:3) and various art styles, including Childhood Sketch, Marker Drawing, and Oil Painting.

5. Sharing files got a lot easier (even with Apple devices)

Samsung has made significant upgrades to file sharing to bridge the gap between its ecosystem and other platforms, particularly Apple devices. A major addition is a new “Share with Apple devices” option in the Quick Settings menu, enabling seamless, high-speed transfers to iPhones, iPads, and Macs that use AirDrop.

One UI 8.5 also makes it easier to access the storage of one Galaxy device directly from another through the My Files app. For example, you can browse photos, music, and documents stored on your Galaxy Tab directly on your Galaxy phone, provided both devices are signed into the same Samsung account.

It’s important to highlight that Samsung hasn’t published the eligible devices list yet. However, the One UI 8.5 update is almost certain to reach every Galaxy device that received the One UI 8.0 update or launched with it.

Yes, the list is too big for a minor One UI upgrade, given that past have typically been reserved for Galaxy Z and S series devices. However, this time, Samsung is preparing for a wider rollout.

Samsung hasn’t commented on when it will begin the stable rollout of One UI 8.5. However, based on the beta program’s progress so far, we can expect the stable rollout to begin later this month or early May 2026. Undoubtedly, the Galaxy S25 series will be the first recipients. The rollout will then gradually expand to the rest of the Galaxy S and Z series devices. Several budget models could also receive the update alongside premium models, but the rest will have to wait a bit longer.

Samsung has stretched the One UI 8.5 beta program long enough to make it the longest One UI beta program in the company’s history. While that can be frustrating, it has allowed the brand to release the One UI 8.5 beta to a larger number of Galaxy devices, thus becoming the company’s biggest beta program to date.

The beta program went live in early December 2025, starting with the Galaxy S25 series, and it didn’t expand to other devices for the next three months. That long gap led to rumors that the beta program might remain exclusive to the Galaxy S25 series. But Samsung had other plans.

In mid-March 2026, the One UI 8.5 beta expanded to Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 for the first time. The beta rollout has since expanded to over a dozen Galaxy devices. What surprised us the most is the inclusion of Galaxy A-series phones, which typically don’t receive minor One UI releases. The list also includes three generations of FE phones, for the first time.

As of writing this post, the One UI 8.5 beta program is available for a total of 21 Galaxy devices. Here’s the complete list:

That’s 21 devices in total, more than the total number of Galaxy devices that participated in previous One UI beta programs. The One UI 8.0 beta had about 18 eligible devices, while the One UI 7 beta had only 12. The One UI 6.1 and One UI 6.1.1 beta programs had fewer than 15 eligible devices each.

While it’s good to see Samsung doing the hard work to bring the One UI 8.5 beta to a larger user base, there’s still room for improvement. Samsung could’ve done a better job of expanding the beta, particularly in the first few months. And for the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung appears to be prolonging the beta program, given that recent beta builds have had no critical bugs. It has already received nine One UI 8.5 betas, which is already the biggest any Galaxy device has received so far. Still, looking at new features and upgrades in One UI 8.5, the wait is worth it.

It appears we’re still nowhere near the stable rollout, as the company has reportedly planned a few more beta releases this month.

According to the leaked One UI 8.5 beta timeline shared by a user on X, the Galaxy S25 series will receive at least two more beta updates in April. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S23 phones may also receive two beta updates this month, while the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 may receive one.

Earlier this week, the first One UI 8.5 beta build for these Galaxy smartphones was spotted (1, 2) on Samsung’s servers, suggesting that the brand could open the One UI 8.5 beta program for them soon.

While opening the beta program would allow more Samsung users to gain early access to the upcoming features and upgrades, it could also result in some delay to the stable rollout.

One UI 8.5 is still based on Android 16, but it uses a newer QPR2 build that brings extra features and enhancements from Google. Plus, the update includes a host of new features and changes from the One UI team, including a fully customizable Quick Settings, allowing you to resize, rearrange, and organize toggles and sliders.

The update also includes updated app icons, featuring a bit of 3D effect, for the first-party apps at least. Further, the lock screen has been updated to automatically adjust the clock and date. It can now show weather visuals based on the current conditions.

A key upgrade in One UI 8.5 is the adoption of a modern floating tab bar UI, a pill-shaped UI element with a frosted color scheme, replacing the traditional plain tab bar at the bottom. The new software introduces “Now Nudge” to proactively suggest actions and information based on the content on the screen. It also introduces some important features, including Partial screen recording, Audio broadcast, Storage share, Failed authentication lock, and Theft protection. While we expected this to be a stable release for the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung has thrown another One UI 8.5 beta update, bringing the total beta count to eight. The latest build includes a host of bug fixes, but thankfully, those are not critical, meaning Samsung may be doing the final bug cleanup before the stable release.

The eighth One UI 8.5 beta for the Galaxy S25, S25+, and S25 Ultra comes with the build version ZZCD and has a download size of nearly 1GB. The update, spotted by Tarun Vats, was initially rolled out in Germany, but then quickly expanded to India, Poland, South Korea, and the UK within a few hours of its initial release. Only the US is yet to receive the update, which shouldn’t take long.

As for the changes, Beta 8 adds a new story type in the Gallery app that automatically generates monthly, quarterly, or yearly reviews. This could very well be the last One UI 8.5 beta for the Galaxy S25 series, as Samsung is reportedly gearing up for the stable rollout. Additionally, it can now show weather visuals based on the current conditions. An important visual upgrade is the new, modern floating tab bar UI, a pill-shaped UI element with a frosted color scheme. It replaces the traditional plain tab bar at the bottom.

Samsung has improved the Photo Assist feature to let users keep generating and editing AI images without saving every version first. It also introduces a new AI feature, “Now Nudge,” that proactively suggests actions and information based on what is currently on your screen. It works similarly to Google’s “Magic Cue” on Pixel devices.

One UI 8.5 also introduces some important features, such as Partial Screen Recording to record specific areas of your phone, Audio Broadcast to use your phone as a microphone, and Storage Share to access files from other Galaxy devices. When will Samsung roll out the One UI 8.5 update?

Well, that could change soon, as preparation for the One UI 8.5 beta program has begun for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.

Earlier this week, One UI 8.5 firmware files for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 were spotted on Samsung’s servers, but they don’t guarantee a beta release. The same has been spotted for dozens of Galaxy devices in recent weeks. What further solidifies the arrival of the One UI 8.5 beta for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 is that the tech giant has created One UI 8.5 beta program sections for these two devices on its Community forum (via). This strongly suggests that Samsung is preparing to begin the One UI 8.5 beta program for these phones soon.

Once the beta program is live, Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 owners will have a chance to get early access to the latest features and upgrades in One UI 8.5. Keep in mind that the seats are limited and fill up very quickly. So, you must apply for the beta program as soon as it opens. We’ll update you on the website when that happens.

With the rollout of One UI 8.5 Beta 5 for the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung has quietly introduced a major refresh to Bixby. The changelog only mentions an applied Bixby version upgrade, but early testers are reporting much bigger changes under the surface.

The update is currently rolling out in regions including the US, UK, Germany, India, Korea, and Poland, with a download size of around 550MB and the February 2026 security patch.

According to beta users, the assistant now delivers noticeably faster and more detailed answers. It can generate longer, structured content, such as poems, essays, and in-depth explanations, directly on device.

There are also signs of deeper web integration. Bixby appears to pull real-time information from online sources, and some testers have noticed a small Perplexity icon appearing in certain search results. Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed the integration in this beta, but the visual cue strongly suggests backend support from Perplexity AI.

In practical terms, that means Bixby is starting to feel less like a basic voice command tool and more like a conversational assistant.

Better device control

Beyond web queries, Bixby seems more responsive when controlling the phone itself. Natural-language commands such as “Set display brightness to 30 percent” or “Change system sound to level 3” execute instantly, without requiring users to navigate through menus. That may sound minor, but smoother system-level control is exactly where voice assistants often fall short.

The assistant now appears to better understand both the device and online context, blending hardware control with web-powered intelligence.

Samsung has also updated the visual experience. When activated, Bixby now displays a cleaner, pill-shaped animation bar at the bottom of the screen. The Bixby icon sits on the left, the microphone on the right, and the edges glow subtly while listening. The overall design feels more modern and less intrusive.

Bixby has long struggled to compete with Google Assistant and, more recently, Gemini. But this update suggests Samsung is taking its assistant more seriously again. Samsung has already released five One UI 8.5 beta builds for the Galaxy S25 trio, and it appears the brand is still not done with the beta testing. Just recently, a new beta build was spotted on the test server, which could be the sixth for the S25 series. Now, if you’re wondering whether a new beta will cause a delay to the stable release or when the stable update will arrive, then stick to the post as we dig deeper to find those answers.

The One UI 8.5 beta program went live in early December for the Galaxy S25 series. At regular intervals, Samsung continued to push more beta builds to fix bugs and enhance the software experience. The Beta 3, in particular, brought some hope of a quicker, stable release, as the build reportedly had a near-stable smoothness with no obvious bugs. However, Samsung wasn’t convinced.

The fourth beta landed in early February, and then the fifth one arrived this week. While these builds primarily aimed to improve software smoothness and squash previously discovered bugs, they also introduced a couple of new features. Beta 4 added Direct Voicemail, and Beta 5 debuted AI-powered Bixby. 

Samsung might release another One UI 8.5 beta soon, as a new build has just been spotted on the server (via Alfaturk) with firmware version ZZB7. This could go live next month as the sixth beta update for the Galaxy S25 series. We don’t know how many more are on the way. Last year, Samsung released seven One UI 8.0 beta builds before pushing the stable update. So, there could be one or two more beta builds for One UI 8.5 in the queue before we actually start receiving the stable update.

Samsung hasn’t announced when it will start rolling out the stable One UI 8.5 update. However, if past rollouts are anything to go by, we can expect the rollout to begin in late March 2026, starting with the Galaxy S25 series.

What to expect from the One UI 8.5 upgrade?

New wallpapers discovered inside the software are hinting at a bold palette for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, including a bright orange finish that could easily become the signature look of 2026.

The wallpapers were first spotted by a lesser-known source, but well-known leaker Ice Universe has chimed in to support the find — which makes this leak a lot harder to ignore. Each wallpaper is themed around a distinct color: orange, silver, white, pink, black, and turquoise. If those correspond directly to the launch lineup, buyers should have six finishes to choose from.

Of course, Samsung loves to keep a few shades exclusive. Following recent patterns, Black, White, Silver, and Pink would likely be the standard retail options. Meanwhile, the flashier orange and turquoise versions could end up as Samsung.com exclusives or regional specials — similar to what we saw with the S24 and S25 series.

The possible orange variant is particularly interesting. It lines up with earlier whispers that Samsung was experimenting with a more vibrant, standout color for the S26 Ultra this time. Alongside a few subtle design tweaks, a new “Network Battery Saver” feature has surfaced, and it could quietly help your phone last longer without you having to touch a thing.

According to a deep dive by Android Authority, the feature uses Samsung’s “Personal Data Intelligence” system — the same one behind features like Now Brief — to learn your habits and cut down on network activity when your phone’s idle. Essentially, it figures out when you’re asleep, relaxing at home, or just not using your device much, and automatically limits background network access to reduce drain.

One line in the leaked code sums it up neatly: “Save battery by limiting network performance when your phone isn’t likely to be used, such as when you’re sleeping.” Another mentions that users can control how this feature behaves: “Network battery saver uses Personal data intelligence to determine when to apply network performance limits… You can manage the apps and services that use Personal data intelligence in Settings.”

The stable One UI 8 rollout has just begun, but leaks have already started revealing important details about its next iteration, One UI 8.5. We already know that Samsung has been working on it for months, and recently, the Galaxy S25 Ultra was spotted on the test server with One UI 8.5 build. Now, a leaked video has surfaced on the internet, giving us our first look at the software well ahead of its official release.

A developer, @Feruzbek_101, was able to somehow modify the One UI 8.5 internal beta build and run it on a Galaxy S21+. The video shared by him reveals Samsung is making UI changes across various apps and functions, including the Settings app, Galaxy Themes, and Studio Editor.

The changes become visible right from the boot screen. There’s a new One UI 8.5 logo on the boot screen with gradients around it, giving it a colorful experience. Samsung has been showing a minimalist “Samsung Galaxy” text on the boot screen for years. It’s good that Samsung’s making some changes there.

The Setting app is also getting some notable UI tweaks. The menu options are now compact, and there are no subtitle texts as well. The search bar is now located at the bottom, which is easier to reach, and there’s an overflow gradient on both top and bottom edges. There are also drop shadows on all containers and the search bar. The expanded search page now shows different categories in a three-column grid.

More changes are visible inside the Settings app when you tap on a specific item. The back button floats above the content and gets a drop shadow of its own, which looks similar to iOS 26. Furthermore, the One UI Home Screen page within the Settings page replaces the dummy icons with real ones.

The Phone app may be getting a big UI overhaul in One UI 8.5. One UI 8.5 also brings design changes to the Galaxy Themes app. The app launch page features a giant brush icon, perhaps aiming to convey a colorful and tweaking vibe.
