The highlight of the smartphone is its triple-camera setup on the back which is developed by the engineers who made Sony A7 III and other popular mirrorless cameras. The phone’s camera setup includes three 12-megapixel sensors — wide, ultra-wide, and zoom.

Sony says that the smartphone can shoot up to 20fps in burst mode with features like autofocus and auto-exposure enabled. This makes the phone an ideal candidate for capturing action and sports events.

The Sony Xperia 1 II features a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED screen that comes with a 21:9 aspect ratio, making it taller than other flagship phones available in the market. Under the hood, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage with support for expandable storage up to 1TB.

Although the Sony Xperia 1 II is the company’s first 5G smartphones for Europe, the U.S. variant supports LTE bands. But Sony has said that it will soon launch Xperia Pro 5G in the United States with support for high-speed mmWave 5G technology.

The model is sold by Amazon in Germany, Italy, and the UK (in addition to Clove). The flagship device is also available in the Netherlands via a third-party retailer. The Xperia 1 comes with a staggering €949 in Europe. The phone is also expected to go on sale in the US in July bearing an almost similar price tag. The device is bundled with an exclusive gift of a 64 GB microSD card on Amazon. While in the Netherlands, Belsimpel offers the Sony Xperia 1 with a couple of gifts such as the Sony WH-1000XM3 wireless headphones with Active Noise Cancelling that sells for €380. The retailer will also be giving out a PD Fast Charger that costs €59.

The Xperia 1 features a super tall 21:9 4K HDR OLED display, which Sony claims is a first for a mobile device. The back panel is made of glass which gives it a premium look. The device is powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Can we really agree with Sony that the price tag befits the Xperia 1? Not really. While the display may be a marvel, there are several options you can get for almost half the price of the Xperia 1 such as the OnePlus 7 Pro, Mi 9, Mi Mix 3 5G, OnePlus 7, Lenovo Z6, Vivo iQOO, APEX 2019 etc. Besides, the device doesn’t even have an in-display fingerprint sensor. Rather, it utilises a side-mounted fingerprint. In addition, for such a powerful display resolution Sony crammed a 3300mAh battery under its hood which we think is rather inadequate. So, you may really not get an extended usage period with the 4K display. Follow our source links to visit the official stores where the Xperia 1 is sold.

Despite being partners for so long, the companies hadn’t collaborated for smartphone cameras. According to a new leak, both the companies are now jointly working on improvising the camera capabilities of the Xperia 1 smartphone.

It is quite strange that the supplier of different imaging sensors for most of the smartphones is relying on a new partner for the camera module on its smartphone. The Chinese website found the Zeiss MILVUS lenses on all the triple rear sensors of the device.

The Japanese smartphone maker is reportedly using two Zeiss lenses out of the Xperia 1’s three rear cameras. The Zeiss lenses are expected in its 12-megapixel primary lens, and another 12-megapixel 16mm ultra-wide lens with an aperture of f/1.6, whereas the remaining 12-megapixel camera will come from Samsung.

Both the Samsung and Zeiss have worked with Sony Electronics to bring the popular Alpha mirrorless series cameras in the past. Though, it is their first collaboration for smartphones.

Sony Xperia 1 was announced in February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It offers the world’s first 4K 6.5 inch OLED display with 21:9 aspect ratio. The taller display carries a resolution of 3840 x 1644 pixels with 643-pixel density per inch. Xperia 1 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Soc coupled with 6 GB RAM and a triple camera module. An 8-megapixel sensor is present on the front side for selfies.

Design

Despite Sony Xperia 1 comes with a very innovative form factor, I love the Huawei P30 Pro because of its better bezels optimization and its stunning reflective glass back available in gradient hues. It comes with almost 90 percent of screen-to-body ratio and it is fully waterproof (it can go up to 2 meters deep for 30 minutes). Right after, there is Sony Xperia 1 with its very tall 21:9 aspect ratio and Gorilla Glass 6 protecting both the front and rear glass. I do not like the notch of the Google Pixel 3 XL so much because of its size, but it is still a beautiful and original device, and note that it houses front-facing stereo speakers.

Display

Sony Xperia 1 is equipped with the world’s first 4K OLED display ever seen on a smartphone. Its level of detail is so huge that you will probably notice the difference with lower resolution only in a VR environment. It takes several technologies from Sony’s Bravia TVs to improve the color reproduction and it is also HDR compliant. The second place goes to the Google Pixel 3 XL that is another device with an OLED display and it has a high 2K resolution as well as the HDR certification. Due to its lower resolution and less satisfying color reproduction, Huawei P30 Pro cannot compete with its opponents.

Hardware/Software

The smartphone with the most powerful chipset is the Sony Xperia 1 which comes with the Snapdragon 855 by Qualcomm, paired with 6 GB of RAM. But Huawei P30 Pro looks more interesting because it comes with more RAM and a lot more internal storage in its most expensive variant (up to 8 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of internal storage that you can furtherly expand with a micro SD). Given that the Google Pixel 3 XL comes with an old-gen Snapdragon 845 chipset it loses the comparison, but note that it gets updated faster and more constantly with new Android versions and security patches as it is a Google’s phone.

Camera

Not only Huawei P30 Pro wins the camera comparison against the Google Pixel 3 XL and Sony Xperia 1, but it is also the most impressive camera phone in the whole smartphones market. It boasts a quad camera setup including a 40 MP sensor which replaces the green color in the RGB paradigma with yellow in order to capture a lot more light. The first camera samples showed that Huawei P30 Pro in normal mode is able to capture more light and to shoot better photos in low light conditions than Google Pixel 3 XL with its advanced Night Sight mode. Sony Xperia 1 is still an awesome camera phone, but Huawei P30 Pro is way superior.

Battery

With its mammoth 4200 mAh battery, Huawei P30 Pro wins the battery comparison. It is also the only to support reverse wireless charging, so it can be used as a power bank to charge other devices wirelessly.

Price

Huawei P30 Pro hitten the shelves with an €880/$986 price tag, Sony Xperia 1 will cost about €1000/$1120 and Google Pixel 3 XL has a listing price of €960/$1075. At the end of the day, Huawei P30 Pro turns out to be a better device due to its higher camera potentialities, awesome hardware, and way bigger battery.

Here, we compared the most impressive Chinese flagship of the moment with two of the best flagships unveiled in February. We are talking about Huawei Mate 20 Pro which remains the most complete Chinese phone in the market despite the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 9, simply because the Mi 9 focuses on the price. The new flagships we chose for this comparison are the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and the Sony Xperia 1 as we think they are among the 5 most interesting ones announced in 2019 until now.

Design

Even though tastes always play the main role when it comes to the design, we decided to give the first award for the aesthetics to Samsung Galaxy S10+. We chose it because of its higher screen-to-body ratio as it features an innovative Infinity-O Display that gets rid of the notch and other silly solution to minimize the bezels. It even comes in a more expensive version with an even more attractive ceramic body. And it has a sturdy build quality thanks to the IP68 certification and Gorilla Glass 6 protecting all the glasses. The second place goes to the Sony Xperia 1 for the originality, thanks to its ultra tall aspect ratio.

Display

It is a very hard fight between Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Sony Xperia 1. Samsung Galaxy S10+ is currently considered as the best phone when it comes to the display quality. It has a perfect color reproduction, the highest brightness, and perfect contrasts. Unfortunately, Sony Xperia 1 is still not on the shelves, so we can not test it thoroughly in order to compare it with the Galaxy S10+. It borrows several technologies from Sony’s TVs and it has the world’s first 4K OLED panel.

Hardware/Software

These devices are among the most expensive ones ever launched, so it is obvious that they come with an excellent flagship-class hardware department and it is hard to notice the differences between their performances. Samsung Galaxy S10+ wins the comparison simply because it comes in a way better memory configuration. We are talking about the variant with 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of internal UFS 2.1 storage, while Sony Xperia 1, which takes the second place, has just 6 GB of RAM. Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a Kirin 980 chipset that is not at the same level as the Snapdragon 855 or the Exynos 9820 found on the Xperia 1 and Galaxy S10+, so it takes the last place despite it boasts up to 8 GB RAM.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Huawei Mate 20 Pro can be easily considered the best camera phones out there, and it will be hard for the Sony Xperia 1 to provide a similar photo quality, despite it being the first triple camera phone by Sony. I would personally go for the Samsung Galaxy S10+ even though its rear cameras are as impressive as the ones of the Mate 20 Pro, simply because it has a better front setup composed of a dual selfie camera able to record 4K videos.

Battery

Both Samsung Galaxy S10+ and Huawei Mate 20 Pro come with battery capacities above 4000 mAh and they are among the best flagships for battery life. We found Samsung Galaxy S10+ slightly more efficient as it lasts a bit more in some scenarios, while Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes right after.

Price

Samsung Galaxy S10+ wins the comparison because of its better overall camera department, better display, and great overall performances. It starts from less than €950, while Huawei Mate 20 Pro actually costs about €800 and Xperia 1’s price is still unknown as it did not hit the shelves yet and Sony did not reveal anything about its availability.

Majority of the manufacturers announced the 5G supported devices which are slated to make debut in Q2 2019. In latest, Sony has joined the list of awaited 5G supported devices with its prototype device. The new device has been showcased at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona at Sony and Qualcomm booths.

It seems a decade of new technologies have just started with the announcement of folding smartphones from Samsung and Huawei. On the other hand, 5G technology support is gaining pace, and the initial batch of compatible devices have made an appearance at the Mobile World Congress.

As per our folks at Pocket-lint, they have spotted a Sony 5G prototype device at both Sony and Qualcomm booths. It was unlikely to get the full information about the device by just looking at it as the device was encased. Later talking to Adam Marsch, Sony’s global communications team, our source came to know that it is not a commercial but a testing product. Although, they even confirmed that the actual models would differ from the current prototype. Currently, multiple devices with minor hardware changes are going through different tests. The real purpose of minor hardware changes is to“trying to understand [what would happen] if you take an antenna away from a certain place and make it thinner”.

The prototype models are running on Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset. It is even likely that the company would have coupled Snapdragon 855 with the X50 5G modem. The display measurements were not available, but it showed 21:9 aspect ratio. Sony has labelled the new device as “AG-1” internally as told by Adam Marsh. It uses 5mm wave for the 5G transmission along with sub 6 spectrum support.

Speaking further, Adam said that Sony is working on 5G technology but don’t have plans for any commercial product launch yet. It might come with a 5G device in the near future. The exact time frame is still unknown, although, it has been made clear that Sony is working on new 5G technology.

It has been speculated that Sony could come with a commercial 5G smartphone at IFA 2019 in September. It could be another version of recently launched Sony Xperia 1 which runs Snapdragon 855.
