While the strategy has served the company quite well since its advent, Xiaomi knows that in order to keep up growth, it has to rise above the competition. And what better way to do so than improving research?

With that likely in mind, Xiaomi chairman and founder Lei Jun yesterday announced that the company’s goals for investment into R&D in the next 5 years have been increased to 100 billion Yuan or around $15 billion. The company’s previous announcement from a couple of years back had set the amount at 50 billion Yuan, so the upgraded plans impart a perfect two-fold increase.

The CEO further revealed under the same post that 22 billion Yuan had already been invested over the past two years and that Xiaomi now has 16,000 engineers, meaning things have been going smoothly and in accordance with plans. He says that all of it is being done to “live up to the expectations of Mi Fans.”

And it’s not like all the money flowing into R&D has been fruitless as results have indeed been reflecting on its latest products — a good example being the Xiaomi 12‘s self-developed CyberFocus and Image Brain tech on its cameras that promises strides in object tracking and image processing speeds. The investment also very likely has a major role to play in getting the company to diverge into other businesses including smart home products and even EVs.

This firm is fully owned by the Xiaomi Corporation.

According to a pandaily report, the news arrives from a business registration information, which also revealed that the newly establishes is legally represented by Alain Lam. The information states that the business scope includes enterprise management, enterprise management consulting, and information consulting services. As per the Chinese tech giant, the sizeable investment to establish the firm will help in driving its business development forward as well.

Notably, the investment also arrives as the company recently shared its financial report for the third quarter of this year. This report showcased that Xiaomi invested in more than 360 companies by the end of the third quarter, with its total investment reaching around 59.1 billion Yuan (roughly 9.2 billion US Dollars). Apart from investments into other firms, the company has recently even registered its second automobile unit, as it seeks to expand its prospects in the booming electric vehicle market. It is even planning on building a new car production plant in Beijing, which will have an annual production capacity of 300,000 units.

According to a 36kr report, the two Chinese tech giants have invested in Beijing Weilan New Energy ltd, a China based battery supplier. The report adds that the company has received investment from both brands for its project worth 5 billion Yuan (roughly 782 million US Dollars). Notably, this investment in question is worth 500 million Yuan (roughly 78.2 million US Dollar). For those unaware, Weilan is a high tech firm that focuses on developing next generation of all solid state batteries.

Weilan New Energy was established back in 2016 and has three production bases in China. Its batteries have already powered electric vehicles, including the likes of the NIO ET7, which boasts a maximum range of an impressive 1,000 kilometers. With Huawei and Xiaomi investing in the company, it appears that they plan to accelerate their plans for their respective EV projects.

Previously, we had reported on Xiaomi registering its second car unit while a separate financial report had revealed that it has over 500 research and development members working on its automobile units. On the other hand, Huawei has launched products for other car brands, while its joint venture AVATR had unveiled its first model, the E11 earlier this month. Both brands have even made strategic acquisitions to further boost their EV plans in the past as well, so this report doesn’t arrive as a surprise.

Since then, the company has invested and acquired various companies related to the automobile industry, with the latest investment being in Motorcomm.

This would mark another investment that the Chinese tech giant has made into firms related to automobiles. Furthermore, the company invested in Motorcomm through the Hubei Xiaomi Yangtze River Industrial Fund. For those unaware, Motorcomm working with research and the development of core communications chips that are found in vehicles. The firm was established back in 2017 and its business scope includes technology development, industrial automation, automobiles, consulting, and other technical services as well.

In other words, this investment might be quite important as well since core communication chips for vehicles is an important aspect, especially for smart cars. Just recently, we had also reported on the brand seeking to acquire DeepMotion, which is an autonomous driving technology based startup for a sum of 77.4 million US Dollars.

According to a Reuters report, Evergrande is looking to sell part of its 65 percent stake in the Evergrande New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Group as per sources close to the matter. As of right now, the NEV has a market capitalization of 12.5 billion US Dollars and a source stated that the Chinese tech giant and investment firms are looking to buy a significant minority stake in the business. Unfortunately, Evergrande, Xiaomi, and the state asset regulators have yet to offer any comments regarding this matter.

As per the sources, the talks regarding the acquisition of stakes is apparently still at the early stages and might undergo changes as well. Earlier this month, Evergrande stated that it was in discussions with several independent third party investors for the proposed sale of certain assets, which included the stakes of its New Energy Vehicle unit. This move is an effort to reduce its debts.

For those unaware, Xiaomi has recently been raising its investment into the electric vehicle based firms and technology ever since it revealed its 10 billion US Dollar plan for entering the EV market. This had also followed closely after it was revealed that even Apple and Huawei were eyeing the electric vehicle industry as well. So, the new acquisition would give Xiaomi EV production facilities for its own automobile business.

According to a CaixinGlobal report, Zongmu executed the financing in three stages, with the last round being led by the Hubei Xiaomi Yangtze River Industrial Fund, an investment fund backed by the Chinese smartphone maker. The news arrives from a statement from the automotive system developer earlier this week. Notably, this investment round also included the likes of Denso, Jadex Capital, Cowin Capital, Qualcomm Ventures, and Fosun Capital also joining in.

The sizeable investment into the firm is indicative of the growing investor interest in industry that has been presenting an economic opportunity. This funding will also enable Zongmu to possibly work with Xiaomi to explore the uses of its autonomous driving technology, as per the statement. Interestingly, the news arrives as the smartphone maker announced its plans on venturing into the smart car market, unveiling its plans back in March 2021.

This would have the brand join the likes of other tech giants like Baidu and Huawei that have also shown interest in the smart car market in recent times. For those unaware, Zongmu was founded back in 2013 and focuses on developing autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance technologies and products related to positioning and mapping as well. The company is also known for its automated valet parking system, which can be found in an SUV model made by China FAW Group.

According to an ITHome report, the chip developed has undergone some business changes recently, with the new shareholders being Gongqingcheng Tuojin Zhonghe Investment Partnership Enterprise (Limited Partnership), Hubei Yangtze River Industry Fund Partnership (Limited Partnership), and Shenzhen Tuojin Venture Capital Fund Partnership (Limited Partnership). The registered capital has increased to around 28.59 million Yuan (roughly 4.38 million US Dollars).

The Huajing Sensing is a firm that is based around independent sensor core chip technology. This firm was established back in 2010, with its business scope including research and development, production, and manufacturing of sensor equipment, technology development, technical consulting, and technical services for the Internet of Things products.

Furthermore, the Chinese smartphone maker has also invested into a number of companies through the Yangtze River Industrial Fund including Tishen Technology, which provides flexible tactile sensors, a semiconductor Zonghui Xinguang, and even laser equipment manufacturing company Keyun Laser. So, this is likely Xiaomi’s move of investing into local tech based firms.

According to a NikkeiAsia report, the Chinese tech giant raised its stakes by a large amount in at least 34 China based chip related firms from 2019 till now. Furthermore, the company also added stakes in about 25 other tech hardware based firms that were not related to semiconductors as well. At the moment, the smartphone manufacturer is targeting chip develops, chip equipment makers, startups, and even advanced displays, camera lenses and automation and, precision equipment.

Notably, these investments made by Xiaomi are in line with China’s road map for building a more competitive tech manufacturing supply chain. In other words, reducing its reliance on foreign advanced technology and strengthening its own tech industry. The company is currently a rapidly growing firm from China, with its global smartphone market share rivaling other giants like Apple. Huawei had been the target of various US trade restrictions and even Xiaomi has been facing similar accusations of alleged ties to Chinese military.

According to an ITHome report, the Founder made the statement after being asked about the investment the Chinese tech giant plans on making for research and development this year. Lei Jun said that the company will continue to maintain its high investment into technology research and development for this year. Furthermore, Xiaomi will be further raising the investment by up to 30 to 40 percent in 2021.

This would have investment reach somewhere between 13 billion to 14 billion Yuan (roughly over 2 billion Yuan). Additionally, Lei Jun also added that the company will also be focusing on recruiting engineers this year. As per the official statement, Xiaomi will be hiring around 5,000 employees in 2021. The senior executive was also asked by the Mi MIX 4 as well.
Although, Lei Jun state that the device is currently in the works and is one of the tasks being handled by its research and center department.
According to a KrAsia report, Xiaomi has invested 139 million Yuan (roughly 20.7 million US Dollars) into the Dongyi Risheng. This will have the former buy 21 million shares from Dongyi Tianzheng Investment Co, at a price of 6.62 US Dollars per share. At the moment, Dongyi Tianzheng Investment holds 256.4 million shares before the completion of the deal.

According to Dongyi Risheng’s official filing, “The company will leverage on Xiaomi’s wide presence in the Internet of things (IoT) sector, as well as its own accumulation in the home decoration sector and its own digitization capabilities, to explore how AI and IoT technologies can integrate with home appliances to provide a smart living for consumers.” In other words, the home decorations maker is also gaining from the transfer of shares and will branch out to IoT products as well.

The move from Xiaomi will also allow it to grow its own smart home products business. The two companies have been cooperating since July 2020, and after the signing of the strategic partnership, Dongyi will bring the smartphone maker and its partners’ products into its current sales channel. Meaning, this would help the Xiaomi IoT product penetration rate as well.

For those unaware, BYD is a Chinese group that specializes in multiple fields includes automobiles, semiconductors, solar panels, and more. Furthermore, the Chinese company also recently announced that it has raised a total of 800 million Yuan (roughly 112 million US Dollars) from Xiaomi, SK Group, and even Lenovo.

According to a few analysts, the investment from Xiaomi marks a step of the company’s plans on growing its components business or, in simpler terms, car components, within the automobile industry. Through this investment, Xiaomi will be able to gain access to data collected by cars made by BYD, helping it create a software-hardware integrated platform.

Notably, BYD Semiconductor’s products have the highest adoption rate by cars in China. Within the industry, the company has a sizeable market share of 18 percent in 2019. Furthermore, it is also planning on venturing further into the industrial vehicle sector. Hence, the investment from Xiaomi is a beneficial role for both sides, with capital being gained by one and data for the other.

Kingsoft claims that it is China’s largest independent cloud based service provider and that it aims to monetize on the growing applications of networking and technology. This includes increasing scope of 5G networking, artificial intelligence, IoT (Internet of Things), and demand for multi-cloud and neutrality that are also supported by favorable government policies.

This is a big deal considering the public debut arrives at a time where Chinese companies are being scrutinized across the globe, especially by US investors. Other Chinese brands like Oriental Culture and MingZhu Logistics are still waiting for their public entry, but Kingsoft Cloud has had a rather quick and uneventful run to Wall Street. But will Kingsoft Cloud change the perception around Chinese companies in the US? We can only wait and find out.

For those unaware, Xiaomi and Huami have historically had a close relationship. The latter has always helped the former in the making of its smart wearables products like the popular Mi Band series. However, the company previously stated and emphasized the fact that Huami does not work under Xiaomi and there is no signed exclusive agreement regarding the partnership, but just mutual cooperation.

Now, rumors were floating around that said Xiaomi investment was being pulled back. However, a senior executive from Huami clarified that Xiaomi “never sold one share.” The statement was shared on the company’s official Weibo account, a popular Chinese microblogging website, and even carried a detailed article addressing the situation. Interestingly, Huami even mentioned the Xiaomi Mi Band 5, which it had previously confirmed to be working on, to be launched later this year.

So, it is clear that the series is popular and that Huami was a part of the reason for the success. The Mi Band 5 is expected to bring improvements over its predecessors and new features as well and is expected to be teased soon.

The Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Investment Fund was initially founded back in 2017 and has since invested in multiple different fronts. Recently, the group had also invested in Hypower Microelectronics which specialized in making fast charging chips and have now also invested in DEEPerceptron. Xiaomi currently holds a 19.05 percent stake in the latter’s stocks.

According to official notes, the company which recently saw the investment is focused on developing in various fields. This includes artificial intelligence, lens technology, information technology and more. One of its notable works is regarding a particular camera hardware that supports 3D image mapping. The implications of this technology could be huge, especially in the smartphone industry. It’s even touted to be cost effective and offer precise, quick and accurate results.

In other words, Xiaomi may find various uses for the new camera technology. 3D image mapping can have many different applications. It can allow for growth in augmented reality or other forms of digital cross overs in real time. Furthermore, the technology can also be used to detect objects, along with their dimensions, movement, and depth as well. Unfortunately, we have no idea how the investment might turn out in the future, but the various applications are exciting to consider in future smartphone generations.

Hypower Microelectronics Co Ltd was established back in March 2018, with its business operations primarily revolving around circuitry and wholesale of integrated circuit chips. The company is represented by Wang Qiang who also owns 36.71 percent of the stakes in the Hypower. And now, Xiaomi has also invested in the company and secured a 9.92 percent stake as well.

According to public data reports, Hypower is currently developing integrated circuits, with a special focus on reducing the overall power supply while also boosting the efficiency of the same. In recent times, Xiaomi has invested heavily in the field of microelectronics and chipsets, which is evident with its latest investment.

However, it doesn’t end there, as the Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Investment Fund had just invested in a semiconductor company called, Senscomm last month as well. The firm used the funding to develop and mass produce various new Wi-Fi 6 standard AIoT products. This investment is also in line with the Chinese government’s (Note: the local government also had a stake in the investment fund) initiative to encourage local businesses to develop proprietary core technologies and products such as chips.

Naturally, this rumor spread like fire.

According to Chinese media, the document leaked about the investment opportunity from CITIC Capital Projects revealed that Xiaomi was looking to raise about $110 million USD in equity investments for subscription of 0.45% stake in the company. This would have valued the company around $24.4 billion, much, much lower than the earlier valuation of $45 billion.

Considering the spread of this news, Xiaomi made an official statement saying that the company had no plans for an IPO. In fact, the company stressed that it has over 10 billion Yuan in cash at the moment, which comes to nearly $1.54 billion USD. Xiaomi further added that it is under no financial pressure and has no plans for new financing or IPO offerings. So, the rumors about the document from CITIC Capital are not true.

Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun also stressed at an event that the company was not looking for financing rounds as it is carrying over (10 billion Yuan) $1.54 billion USD in cash.
