MIUI is one of the most popular versions of Android in China. Not only is it the version run by Xiaomi phones, it is also available for a bunch of non-Xiaomi devices. The Android ROM is now in its 9th version and has been rolling out to devices in the past few months.

Today, the official MIUI Weibo revealed that there will be an announcement tomorrow at 10:00 AM (local time). No one has an idea what it is about except that it is “Good News” according to a rough translation of the post. The post also includes a photo of the Xiaomi Mi 2.

There are reports that the announcement has to do with MIUI 9, more specifically the final roll-out to the remaining supported devices. The phones belonging to this last batch is said to include the 5-year old Mi 2 hence the use of its image in the post.

Xiaomi’s MIUI has been lauded for its support for older devices, a feature that is uncommon to stock Android and a number of other ROMs of Chinese origin.

At an event in December, 2017, CEO Lei Jun, revealed that there are currently 300 million MIUI active users across the globe. This high number is said to be as a result of its continuous support for older devices.

Xiaomi has rolled out stable global ROM of MIUI 9 to various smartphones like Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, Mi 6, Mi 5s Plus, Mi 5, Mi Max 2, Redmi 4 and the newly unveiled Redmi Y1 and Redmi Y1 Lite smartphones. At the unveil event of MIUI 9, the company had confirmed that the MIUI 9 will be made available to even older phones that were launched in 2012. Fresh information shared on the official forum site states that the MIUI 9 will be the last major update software update for some smartphones. The company has also confirmed the names of the devices for which it will be discontinuing support.

Xiaomi will be discontinuing support for smartphones such as Mi Note, Mi 2/2S, 4i, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi 2 and Redmi 2 Prime. It means that the company won’t be releasing closed or open beta after rolling out MIUI 9 update for these phones. The MIUI 9 global stable ROM for these six Xiaomi phones as well as Redmi 1S will be made available gradually between December 2017 and January 2018.

These six smartphones were launched in India in 2015 or earlier. Interestingly, the company will be continuing support for Xiaomi Mi 3 phone which happens to be the first smartphone from the company to debut in India.

According to Xiaomi, the MIUI 9 works like stock version of Android when it comes to speed and functionality. It is a customized version of Android Nougat that includes various new features such as split screen mode, smart app launcher, image search, search for apps in the settings for Dual apps, support for popular video formats in Mi Video app, and more. The Xiaomi Mi 2S was released in April 2013 and has gone on to garner lots of positive reviews for its strong, rugged build and sturdy specs line up. The Mi 2S launched running MIUI 5 but has gotten updates to subsequent MIUI whenever they are launched. Apparently, Xiaomi has been consistent with the upgrades and even pushed the latest MIUI 8.2 version to the device and the result has been cool.

 Aside from running smoothly, the stages could be selected smoothly, the display is capable of a frame rate of 30 fps but that fell to around16 and 17 fps (frames per seconds) but that doesn’t affect the operation at all. The Mi 2S doesn’t come with a memory slot so the games and apps you can have installed inside are sure limited but with a capable hardware marshaled by a Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the phone is capable of handling any app thrown at it and this may include the upcoming MIUI 9. But for now, Mi 2S users get to enjoy the new features offered by MIUI 8.2, more like new wine in an old bottle, same sweet taste.
