Recently, two major tech players, Alphabet and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), experienced a reality check. Despite riding high on an artificial intelligence (AI) fueled rally, their latest quarterly results have left investors wanting more.

Another notable mention is Nvidia, whose shares surged 27% in January and more than tripled last year, primarily due to AI-driven enthusiasm. Yet, it too saw some of its gains retreat in extended trade.

Super Micro Computer, a server maker benefiting from AI demand, also experienced a drop in its shares after hitting a record high earlier in the day.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO has further highlighted the tensions by alleging that China’s auto industry would destroy other automakers if not for global trade barriers.

2024 BYD Seal — BYD is the leading Chinese EV maker

The Chinese EV industry has seen a period of rapid growth that has continued to feed its large population. The industry has positioned itself well ahead of other markets and continues to expand beyond the Mainland. Chinese automakers leverage several key fundamentals to deliver affordable and durable EVs, giving them a higher bargaining edge.

The Tesla Quarterly Earnings call provided the avenue for Musk to acknowledge the pace and efficiency of the Chinese EV industry. He however raised an alarm that the Chinese EV industry could demolish other automakers in the absence of relevant trade barriers. Musk stated that he was of the view that Chinese EV companies will have significant successes outside of China depending on the applicable trade tariffs. The influx of Chinese EVs in markets across the globe has led to claims of possibly extinguishing domestic markets. This has led some governments to put in place protectionist tariffs and regulations to avoid being flooded by cheap Chinese EVs. There is also the possibility of a probe by the European Commission.

Tesla became the first foreign automaker to set up shop in China without being required to have a joint partnership with domestic brands. Stellantis has also highlighted the issue pointed out by Musk on the Chinese auto industry. Tesla has already lost its top position as the leading EV maker, with BYD, a Chinese company mounting the top position. Tesla’s released earnings report indicated that the company failed to meet market expectations for Q4 2023.

The life-saving credentials of the Apple Watch have continued to ramp up with more stories of the revolutionary wearable surfacing. A British doctor has reportedly used an Apple Watch borrowed from a flight attendant to save the life of a distressed passenger during a flight.

The doctor, Rashid Diaz (43 years) is employed by the Hereford County Hospital, England, and was on a Ryanair flight from Birmingham, England to Verona, Italy on January 9, 2024. During the flight, an elderly woman became short of breath and Diaz volunteered to help after a crew member asked if there was a doctor on the flight. The woman was reported to be initially unresponsive to Riaz’s questions, but the doctor, after learning that the woman had a history of heart problems, requested the flight attendant’s Apple Watch. He used the Apple Watch to monitor the sick woman’s blood oxygen levels using the gadget’s blood oxygen app, which indicated low oxygen saturation.

Apple Watch has turned out to become one vital wearable device

Riaz then asked the flight crew for an oxygen cylinder which assisted him in stabilizing the woman’s oxygen saturation until the plane landed in Verona. The woman thereafter received additional medical assistance and was reported to have recovered quickly. Dr. Diaz stated that he used a lot of his learning during the flight on how to use the Apple Watch. He also stressed that it is a lesson in how we can improve in-flight journeys with such basic gadgets that can help in emergencies. Diaz applauded Ryanair for how they handled the situation but said airlines should consider having diagnostic health tools during flights. Such gadgets could be able to take vital health measurements like blood pressure and oxygen saturation, as well as help to determine if someone is having a diabetic emergency.

It is noted that Apple lost a court case instituted by a company that claimed Apple infringed on its proprietary rights to its blood oxygen measuring tech. This has led to the ban of the blood oxygen feature in certain Apple Watches.

Earlier this month, Lenovo ecosystem brand Erazer launched a tablet called K30 Pad 12.6”. It is a large-sized mid-range tablet.

Now, the brand has released a smaller budget tablet. This product officially goes by Erazer A10 Pad.

It is sold via Lenovo’s JD store just like the bigger model.

The Erazer A10 Pad features a plastic unibody design with 8mm thickness. For comparison, the Erazer K30 Pad 12.6 sports a metal body.

The tablet is built around a 10.1-inch display. The IPS LCD panel offers a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

Asus has launched a new laptop under its Fearless series in China. This new notebook officially goes by Asus Fearless Pro 15 2024.

It arrives with a high refresh rate OLED display and Intel Core Ultra processors. It is available with and without a dedicated GPU.

Asus Fearless Pro 15 2024 Specifications

The notebook flaunts a 15.6-inch OLED display with a 2.8K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The panel supports Dolby Vision and up to 600 nits peak brightness level.

It is powered by Intel Core Ultra 5 and Core Ultra 9 processors paired with up to 32GB LPDDR5x RAM and 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. The external GPU variant of the laptop houses an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 GPU (8GB GDDR6).

Earlier this month, Xiaomi unveiled the BE 3600 WiFi 7 router in the Chinese market. Despite being a WiFi 7-enabled router, it is quite budget-friendly. Starting today, the router is available for purchase in China at a special price.

The Xiaomi BE 3600 WiFi 7 router is currently selling on JD.com at 249 yuan ($35). The price is expected to go up after the initial sale window, however, the router will remain quite budget-friendly.

This router offers a dual-band wireless rate of 3570Mbps. This is a 44% increase in throughput compared to WiFi 6, achieved partly through the use of a 5G frequency band supporting 2×2 160MHz. The router allows devices to connect to both 2.4G and 5G frequency bands simultaneously, reaching a maximum theoretical speed of 3.57 Gbps.

Apple’s latest A17 Pro chip outperformed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Now Apple is working on the A18 Pro chip, and some people have revealed its Geekbench 6 scores. The performance numbers show significant improvements in single-core performance compared to the previous generation A17 Pro.

Apple A18 Pro Geekbench 6 Score

Apple is rumored to use the A18 SOC in all models of the iPhone 16 series. This is very good news for users who are considering buying the iPhone 16. The iPhone 15 introduced last year uses the previous generation Apple A16 Bionic, which is the same SOC as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Some people did not prefer the iPhone 15 and 14 models because of the lack of an upgrade in the processor department. Now, the Geekbench 6 result of the emerging A18 Pro gives some information about the next generation of iPhones.

Apple A18 Pro scored 3500 on single-core and 8200 on multi-core, with better single-core performance compared to the previous generation A17 Pro. For reference, the A17 Pro only scored 2906 on single core and 7231 on multi-core. Recently, a Geekbench result was leaked on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, showing much better multi-core performance than the Apple A18 Pro.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 scored 2985 on single core and 10762 on multi-core in the leaked Geekbench 6 results, which is quite close to Apple’s M3 chip. We will start seeing devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in the 4th quarter of this year. Especially the comparison between the highly anticipated Apple A18 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will reveal which chip will win in 2025.
