Apple’s iPhone Powers Record-Breaking Revenue in India as Demand for Premium Smartphones Soars

Apple achieved a record-breaking revenue in India during the fourth quarter of 2023. This success was driven by strong year-on-year growth in double digits, highlighting India’s emergence as a thriving market for Apple’s products and services. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, acknowledged this achievement during a call with analysts, emphasizing the growing importance of India as a major focus area for the company. Here are the details…

Apple posted record India revenue in Q4 2023

Despite facing challenges in its key markets, such as China and the United States, Apple’s overall revenue for the quarter to September 2023 was $89.5 billion, down less than 1% year-on-year. This resilience is attributed to strong sales of its flagship product, the iPhone, which contributed $43.8 billion to the company’s overall revenue. In India, Apple’s growth trajectory has been particularly impressive.

According to Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, the company’s India revenue experienced a strong double digit growth year-on-year during the July-September period. This remarkable performance is attributed to the robust sales of Apple’s flagship product, the iPhone, which has gained significant traction among Indian consumers.

Cook further emphasized that India is a major focus for Apple, and the company is committed to expanding its operations and presence in the country. This commitment is evident in Apple’s recent initiatives, such as the opening of its first retail store in India and the expansion of its manufacturing partnerships in the region.

Analysts believe that Apple’s success in India can be attributed to several factors, including the growing demand for smartphones among India’s middle class, the company’s strong brand reputation, and its effective marketing strategies. Additionally, Apple’s efforts to localize its products and services for the Indian market have also been met with positive response.

As India’s economy continues to grow and its middle class expands, Apple is well-positioned to further capitalize on the market’s potential. The company’s commitment to innovation and its focus on customer satisfaction are likely to continue driving its success in India and other emerging markets around the world.

Chinese researchers uncover security flaws in AI models, including ChatGPT

Chinese researchers have unveiled a significant security loophole in widely used commercial multimodal large language models (MLLMs) such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing Chat. These models, deployed by tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Baidu, are fundamental components of various applications, from virtual assistants to content moderation systems.

The researchers discovered that the vulnerabilities in these MLLMs could be exploited using manipulated images that closely resembled the originals. By making minute alterations almost invisible to the human eye, the researchers effectively bypassed the models’ built-in filters designed to weed out toxic or inappropriate content.

For instance, researchers in Beijing have identified a significant vulnerability in AI models like ChatGPT. Under attack, these models could mistake giant pandas for humans or fail to detect harmful content, highlighting a critical security flaw in commercial AI systems.

Among the affected models, Bard, equipped with face and toxicity detection mechanisms, could generate inappropriate descriptions of harmful content when compromised. The Chinese research team even provided code demonstrating how these adversarial examples could mislead AI models. Their experiments yielded a success rate of 22% against Bard, 26% against Bing Chat, and a staggering 86% against Ernie Bot.

Wu Zhaohui, China’s vice minister of science and technology, addressed these alarming findings at the Global AI Security Summit in the UK. He emphasized the urgent need for stronger technical risk controls in AI governance, urging the global community to address the vulnerabilities discovered in these widely used language models.

One of the key challenges highlighted by the research is the existing imbalance between efforts focused on attacking and defending AI models. While adversarial attacks have garnered significant attention, there remains a lack of robust defense strategies. Traditional defense methods might come at the cost of accuracy and computational resources, making it imperative to explore innovative solutions.

To address these vulnerabilities, the researchers suggested preprocessing-based defenses as a potential solution, especially for large-scale foundation models. These defenses aim to ensure the robustness of MLLMs against adversarial attacks, paving the way for future research and development in AI security.

This discovery underscores the critical importance of enhancing AI technologies’ security infrastructure. As these models become increasingly integrated into everyday applications, it is essential to fortify their defenses against malicious exploitation, ensuring a safer and more secure digital landscape for users worldwide.

Instagram Finally to Let Users Read DMs Without Sending Read Receipts

Ever felt hesitant to reply to Instagram messages you didn’t want to answer, but didn’t want the sender to know you’ve seen them? Fear no more! Instagram is currently testing a feature that allows you to disable read receipts. This means that even if you’ve opened and read a message, the sender won’t see the “seen” label appear underneath it. Here are the details…

Instagram Hits the Button for the Read Receipt Disabling Feature!

Privacy is something we all desire but rarely have. Many of us use social media and live our lives according to the rules of these platforms. What we eat, where we go, what we share—all under the control of platforms like Instagram. We can send messages to each other, and if we choose not to respond, we are marked with the “seen” label. However, users have long been uncomfortable with this.

That’s why they want Instagram to introduce a feature that allows them to disable the read receipt. Fortunately, this option is finally being added to the platform. Adam Mosseri, one of the company’s executives, announced the good news with these words: “We’ve heard your feedback and started testing a new feature that allows you to turn off the read status. In the near future, people won’t have to show others when they’ve been seen when they read messages.”

Mosseri also shared a screenshot of what the feature might look like. Frankly, it’s quite gratifying to see this feature, albeit belatedly. We all have moments when we’re busy, times when we don’t want to spend time on social media, and moments when we don’t want to respond to anyone. However, many of us reply to messages instead of sending a “seen” message because we don’t want to appear rude.

For now, there is no information about when the Instagram read receipt disabling feature will be available. However, considering that it’s ready, it will likely be added to the platform through an update after a short testing phase. I’d also like to remind you that when you activate this feature, there is a possibility that others may not be able to see if you’ve read their messages in a similar way.

Intel scraps expansion plans in Vietnam, dampening Hanoi’s Semiconductor ambitions

In a significant setback to Vietnam’s aspirations in the global semiconductor industry, Intel has abandoned its plans to double the size of its operations in the country. The decision dealt a blow to Hanoi’s hopes of becoming a prominent player in the chip manufacturing market. Vietnam already hosts Intel’s largest factory worldwide for assembling, packaging, and testing chips, but further expansion dreams have been shattered.

The move follows US President Joe Biden’s visit to Vietnam in September, during which he announced deals to support the country’s burgeoning chips industry. However, US officials recently informed a select group of businessmen and experts that Intel had put its expansion plan on hold. The company cited concerns about the stability of power supplies and excessive bureaucracy as reasons for its decision.

While Intel did not specify the exact reasons for the cancellation, it expressed apprehensions about Vietnam’s power supply stability and bureaucratic hurdles. The Southeast Asian nation had hoped to position itself as an alternative to chip manufacturing giants like China and Taiwan, but political risks and trade tensions with the United States posed challenges to its ambitions.

Intel’s withdrawal coincides with the company’s substantial investments in Europe and comes amid power shortages in Vietnam. These shortages have led to temporary production suspensions for numerous manufacturers in the country, exacerbating the challenges faced by the local industry.

Despite this setback, Vietnam continues to actively seek investments from chipmakers, aiming to diversify their supply chains and carve out a larger role in the global semiconductor arena. The Vietnamese government had initially planned to attract $3.3 billion in additional investment from Intel, but references to this were later removed from official documents following media reports.

In the wake of this development, Intel and other multinational firms have been pressing the Vietnamese government for subsidies, particularly in light of a global tax overhaul. Ongoing discussions are centered on the implementation of the new tax and subsidy policies slated for the coming year.

The cancellation of Intel’s expansion plans highlights the challenges faced by emerging players in the semiconductor industry, emphasizing the need for stable infrastructure and favorable business environments to attract major investments. Vietnam, despite this setback, remains determined to bolster its position in the global semiconductor landscape, exploring avenues to attract further investments and navigate the evolving dynamics of the industry.

WhatsApp head confirms in-app ads are still in the works

WhatsApp continues to gain new features and functions. For example, we recently told you that the e-mail verification feature will be coming to the application. However, there is a problem for Meta, the owner of the application. WhatsApp is a free application and does not generate any revenue for the company in any way. For this reason, there have been rumors for a long time that advertising will come to the platform. Finally, Will Cathcart, the head of the company, answered questions such as “Will WhatsApp be paid and will it show ads?” Here are the details…

Get Ready to See Ads While Using WhatsApp

Let’s start with the question of whether WhatsApp will be paid first. No, the application will not be paid under any circumstances for now. However, a step has been taken towards making it paid. Will Cathcart announced that there will be no ads in the chat section of the application, but they plan to show ads in the Status and Channels sections.

WhatsApp rolls out self-destructing audio messages in Beta

We do not have any information about how advertising will be displayed in the Channels section. However, we have information about the Status section thanks to Instagram. As we are used to from the social media platform, we will see Status-formatted ads when switching between shares. This is of course an annoying development for a platform that is free. The real question is what can happen later.

As you know, many platforms that were once free and earned money with advertising revenue are now implementing different strategies. They charge users monthly for their services. In return, they offer additional features such as ad-free experience to their users. For example, we can show YouTube and its Premium subscription as the most suitable platform for this tariff.

Of course, this is a comprehensive speculation, but WhatsApp also has the potential to announce a similar paid subscription. Users will choose between an ad-supported and Premium package. The company will both earn money from each user and have a justification for direct charging. Only time will tell if this scenario will actually happen.

Rivian Makes its Electric Van Available Commercially to All Other Companies

Imagine a world where delivery vans glide through city streets like silent superheroes. Well, meet Rivian’s all-electric van—a game-changer that’s now available for anyone who wants a greener delivery fleet. Amazon, step aside; this van is open to all.

The company has ended its exclusivity contract with Amazon

What’s It Called? Say hello to the Electric Commercial Van (ECV). It’s like a friendly handshake. Forget the old name (Electric Delivery Van or EDV)—we’ve got a fresh one now. But don’t worry, the “Delivery” vibe still hangs around in the van’s different versions.

Rivian

Picture two siblings, both front-wheel-drive champs, powered by Rivian’s magic electric motor. They’re cut from the same cloth but wear different outfits. Here they are, listed below:

Delivery 500: The little guy zips around with a 161-mile range on a full charge. Need to haul stuff? No problem—it can carry up to 2,734 pounds. Think of it as a sturdy workhorse. And its cargo space? 487 cubic feet!

Delivery 700: The big sibling. It’s got a 153-mile range, which ain’t too shabby. Payload capacity? A respectable 2,513 pounds. But here’s the cool part: it’s longer, wider, and roomier. Think gentle giant. Its cargo volume? A whopping 652 cubic feet. And the price tag? $87,000.

Now, about that battery—it’s like the van’s core. Rivian’s keeping it mysterious. But we know it’s a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. Charge it up, and it’s ready for action. No worries about it losing steam—it’s built tough.

The Journey Ahead: Remember when Amazon snagged these vans? They ordered 100,000! Now, 10,000 ECVs roam the roads, delivering packages and smiles. Europe got a taste, but the U.S. devoured most. And guess what? Rivian’s sticking to its pact with Amazon while welcoming new partners.

So here’s to the ECV—a promise of cleaner skies and quieter streets. RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO, says it best: “Let’s cut emissions, one electric van at a time.” Amazon, Rivian, and the road ahead—they’re all part of this journey.

Major Outage at OpenAI, ChatGPT Down for Users Globally

ChatGPT has become a staple for many people across the globe. People are using the AI chatbot to have conversations, brainstorm ideas, organize and so much more. For this reason, when such a service goes down even for a few hours, it creates unrest amongst the small part of the population that extensively uses it. At the time of writing this article, ChatGPT is down, facing a major outage as reported by OpenAI‘s ChatGPT status page.

Users are having to rely on less popular chatbots, such as Google Bard

When a prompt is fed into ChatGPT, it refuses to generate a response, stating that “Something went wrong. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center at help.openai.com.” Upon further inspection, it’s clear that OpenAI is either updating their servers for ChatGPT and other AI-centric services such as Dall.E and Bing Search, or the downtime may be because of a technical error that is currently being investigated. Worst comes to worst, the company’s servers may be facing a coordinated attack of some sort. In such a case, the downtime might be slightly higher than expected.

ChatGPT

The company says that the issue is currently being investigated, and after changing the outage status from ‘Partial’ to ‘Major’, more resources should be allocated towards bringing ChatGPT back up online. The partial outage started around 5:54 a.m. PST, followed by a ‘major’ outage at 6:02 a.m. PST. Users can subscribe to text/email updates to get notified when ChatGPT is back up online. Until then, they can rely on other AI chatbots, for instance, Google‘s Bard for their needs.

UPDATE:

As of 6:50 a.m. PST, OpenAI states that they have identified an issue resulting in high error rates across the API and ChatGPT, and they are working on remediation. More updates will be available here soon.

UPDATE 2:

OpenAI has fixed the issue impacting ChatGPT. Here’s the official update from the company.

“Between 5:42AM – 7:16AM PT we saw errors impacting all services. We identified the problem and implemented a fix. We are now seeing normal responses from our services.”

Apple Halts Development Of iOS 18, macOS 15 To Resolve Bug Fixes

Apple started releasing its latest generation iOS 17, macOS 14, and watchOS 10 for its respective devices a few months ago across the globe. Recently, the company announced the latest iOS 17.1.1 update to address several issues. While users are updating their devices with the latest versions of software, the Cupertino-based tech giant is already working on the next iterations of operating systems for various devices. However, this has taken a hit as per Bloomberg’s reliable Mark Gurman.

Apple pauses iOS 18 and macOS 15 development

Apple has encountered a host of bugs in the current generation software versions for its devices. Hence, the company has paused iOS 18 and macOS 15 development for a week. Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi shared the decision to halt the development process to teams working on the new operating system. Additionally, sources told Gurman that the engineering team under Federighi spotted too many bugs that were overlooked during the internal testing.

Apple reportedly completed the M1 versions of the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 18 last month. The concerned team was moving on to the M2 version when the development was halted. M1 and M2 are milestones of the development cycles and do not refer to M1 and M2 chipsets.

The pause in developing next iteration of iOS 18 and macOS 15 is expected to last only a few days. It is a good news as Apple is prioritizing fixing bugs and issues. The report says that the delay will not likely affect the release schedule of the iOS 18 and macOS 18.

GTA 6 could be announced this week

Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most anticipated video games of all time. There have already been various rumors and leaks regarding this game, but the first official announcement of the latest GTA title could be right around the corner.

Grand Theft Auto VI: The Long Due GTA V Sequel

Grand Theft Auto V celebrated its 10th anniversary in September and is the second best selling video game of all time. But despite being a decade old, there is still no official word regarding its highly anticipated sequel. According to a Bloomberg report, GTA 6 could be announced or confirmed later this week. If this is true, then Rockstar Games could also release a new title for GTA 6 on the studio’s 25th anniversary, which is set in December.

In other words, the first announcement is set for later this week, while the first trailer drops sometime next month. Back in September of last year, we got our first look at the game thanks to a massive leak, which shared gameplay videos of an early GTA 6 build. The title has reportedly been in development for over a decade and could also be the most expensive game.

The total project budget could range somewhere between 1 to 2 billion US Dollars. Interestingly, the GTA 6 leaker managed to hack Rockstar thanks to an Amazon Fire Stick and the Hotel TV. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at the moment, so take this news with a pinch of salt.

Next month marks the 25th anniversary of the Grand Theft Auto series, and it’s rumored that the company will release the trailer on that occasion.

GTA 6 Development

However, there is also The Game Awards, known as the Oscars of the gaming world, taking place on December 7th. It’s speculated that Rockstar might showcase the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer there as well. What’s most intriguing is what they will reveal this week. It’s likely that the announcement will include developers giving speeches explaining what they have created and why. Additionally, we can expect to see glimpses of the characters we’ll be playing and improvements in the open-world environment.

It’s worth noting that Red Dead Redemption, developed by Rockstar in 2018, is still at the top of the gaming world. The game remains superior to most of its 2023 competitors in terms of its open world and visual quality. The main reason for this is the attention to detail that Rockstar pays. Furthermore, the company dedicates years to the game development process, whereas many competitors release big games in just 1-2 years.

Another important factor is the release date of GTA 6. Whether it will be announced this week or alongside the trailer next week remains uncertain. However, considering that we’ve waited for 10 years, waiting a few more weeks in the worst-case scenario probably won’t be a problem for anyone.

Honor Magic Flip

The Chinese smartphone maker launched the Magic Vs 2 as its latest foldable device back in October. Now, tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed some key details regarding the upcoming Honor Magic Flip and Honor’s 2024 foldable lineup. Furthermore, the company is planning on introducing three new smartphones with flexible displays. This includes the Magic Flip, a compact folding device, and an inward and outward. The compact device is reportedly called the Honor V Purse 2, while the inward folding model could be the next gen flagship Magic V3. According to Digital Chat Station, the Magic Flip is powered by a 2,420mAh and a 1,980mAh dual cell battery pack. This gives it a combined 4,500Ah rating.

If this is true, then the Magic Flip will likely be the Flip phone with the largest battery pack in the current market. The tipster also added that Honor is planning on adding some new features like satellite connectivity and variable aperture on its next gen flagship phones. Under the hood, the Magic V3 will likely be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, which is expected to be announced in the first quarter of 2024.
