Oppo has confirmed it will unveil the latest version of its software skin— ColorOS 14— on November 16. However, the company has already started to beta testing of the new OS on many phones. The latest device to join the program is the Oppo Reno 8. Here are the details.

Reno 8 users get an early look at Android 14

The ColorOS 14 beta program was announced for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro+ back in August, and now the Reno 8 has also been added to the roster. Oppo is recruiting internal beta testers from China starting today. However, there’s no news about the beta testing extending to the global market.

Currently, the Find X6 Pro, OnePlus 11, Reno 9 Pro, and handful of other Oppo phones are eligible to sign up for ColorOS 14 beta. However, the testing is limited to China. The company even released a detailed schedule earlier today, revealing when major Oppo flagships and mid-rangers will receive the ColorOS 14 beta update. As mentioned, the OS itself will be unveiled on November 16.

Oppo is yet to detail the major changes included in the ColorOS 14 update. Since it is based on Android 14, you can expect it to bring the new features Google introduced. To remind you, Android 14 brings several new features, including native spatial audio support, cross-device copy and paste, and a new media player. As the launch of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip is approaching, smartphone brands around the world are gearing up to launch new devices with the cutting-edge SoC. iQOO is rumored to be working on a new flagship, which will be called the iQOO 12 and will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. That being said, a new leak has revealed when we can expect this smartphone to arrive in India.

As per known tipster Mukul Sharma, the iQOO 12 will be launched in India by November end, or early December. It will be the first smartphone to introduce the SD8 Gen 3 chip in the Indian market.

Leaked information suggests the iQOO 12 will feature an E7 AMOLED panel with a 2K resolution and an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor is expected to be coupled with the Adreno 750 GPU for robust performance.

However, it recently launched a device with a Kirin 9000S, a 7nm process 5G processor.

Huawei is expected to use the same processor in its upcoming P70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro models. Emerging details suggest that the company has already begun sourcing large quantities of parts for the new smartphones. OnePlus Open is essentially the same device as the Oppo Find N3 Fold, which is set to launch in China. The new images shared by Winfuture once again confirm this, as it looks identical to its Oppo counterpart. However, a report from earlier today showcased the Find N3 Fold in a flashy gold color option as well, but the OnePlus Open is only pictured in black and green. You may see the additional shade during the launch.

In the pictures shared by the German publication, the OnePlus Open is featured with a round camera module. We see a triple-camera setup along with a Hasselblad branding. The device also has the signature OnePlus mute switch on one of the sides. The foldable appears to have a compact profile. If previous leaks are to be believed, the OnePlus Open will bring a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display as well as a 6.31-inch panel on the outside.

iPhone 15 gets same 5G modem as iPhone 15 Pro, despite using older A16 Bionic chip

Although the Pro iPhones got a new chip this year, the baseline devices kept last year’s A16 chip. So many people might have guessed that Apple had simply recycled the motherboards from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to create the new standard models. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to iFixit’s Lead Teardown Technician Shahram Mokhtari, the iPhone 15 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem. This is the same modem used in the iPhone 15 Pro, and it offers some noteworthy upgrades over the X65 modem used in the iPhone 14. The modem is said to be more power efficient and provides better signal acquisition over long distances.

This means, Apple didn’t simply recycle the motherboard from the iPhone 14 Pro to create the iPhone 15. Instead, they redesigned and upgraded some of the internal components.

However, the iPhone 15’s internals are still very similar to the iPhone 14’s overall. iFixit gave the device a repairability score of 4 out of 10, because Apple often pairs parts with software components, making them difficult to repair.

With upgraded internals, the 15 and 15 Plus also support new features such as Roadside Assistance via Satellite and Crash Detection. They also share the latest Apple UWB chip with the 15 Pro and Pro Max, although the “Thread networking technology” for potentially upgraded integration with smart home devices remains exclusive to the A17 Pro-powered models.

After a recent teaser, Nokia has now officially launched the So Pink color option for its G42 smartphone along with a new 8GB + 256GB storage option in India.

In the Indian market, the Nokia G42 offers two storage variants for consumers to choose from. The first option is the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant, which comes at a competitive price of Rs 11,999. For those looking for more storage, there’s the new 8GB RAM + 256GB storage variant priced at Rs 16,999. This smartphone is available in three vibrant colors: So Grey, So Purple, and So Pink.

If you’re interested in the 8GB+256GB version, mark your calendar for October 18 when it will be officially available to buy. In the meantime, the base model of the Nokia G42 is already available for purchase through various channels. Under the hood, it packs an octa-core Snapdragon 480+ SoC. The phone comes in two memory configurations: 6GB RAM with 128GB storage and 8GB RAM with 256GB storage, expandable up to 1TB via a microSD card.

Running on Android 13, it supports a hybrid dual SIM setup and features a 50 MP AF main camera with f/1.8 aperture, along with 2 MP depth and 2 MP macro cameras with f/2.4 aperture. The phone includes features like LED flash, Night mode 2.0, AI Portrait, and OZO 3D audio capture. For selfies, there’s an 8MP front camera.

Additional features include a 3.5mm audio jack, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, and dust and splash resistance with an IP52 rating. Connectivity options encompass 5G SA/NSA, dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 5.1, and GPS/GLONASS/Beidou. The device is powered by a 5000mAh battery with 20W fast charging support.

iPhone 15 Pro Max sees notable performance and thermal improvements after iOS 17.0.3 update

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been criticized for their poor thermal management and throttling under sustained load. But a new software update from Apple seems to have fixed these issues.

Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update for new iPhones earlier this week. After testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this new iOS version, Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard” found that the phone’s performance and thermals have improved significantly.

For instance, the GPU score on Geekbench 6 increased from 27,163 on iOS 17.0.2 to 27,381 on iOS 17.0.3, while CPU scores largely remained the same. This may not seem like a big difference, but gaming performance has definitely improved.

Playing Honor of Kings on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 resulted in an average frame rate of 116.9 frames per second (FPS), while the same game yielded 105.4 FPS on iOS 17.0.2. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max averages 103 FPS on iOS 17.0.3, for comparison.

Likewise, the phone’s temperature while playing the game also dropped around 1°C on the back and 0.6°C on the front. Other games, such as Genshin Impact and NiShuiHan, also ran cooler after the update, with temperature differences of over 2°C. However, the reviewer didn’t share the frame rate numbers for these two games.

Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 update seems to have improved the thermal management and performance of the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, we certainly recommend updating to iOS 17.0.3 to enjoy the improved performance.

Vivo India is accused of orchestrating a $120 million money laundering scheme. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that Vivo India siphoned this sum through shell companies and fake directors. As a result, the agency has arrested four top Vivo India executives and anyone else involved. Including Vivo India’s Chief Financial Officer.

The ED’s investigation traces back to July 2022 when they initiated raids across Vivo India’s offices and warehouses. These searches led to the confiscation of assets and cash valued at about $50 million. The scandal’s tentacles reach beyond Vivo. Also arrested in connection with the case was the Managing Director of Lava International.

Of course, all the details about the topic are not yet clear, and Vivo has not made an official statement about the scandal as of now. Huawei challenges Spain’s 5G Aid rules amidst rising tensions

Huawei Technologies, the Chinese telecommunications giant, has taken legal action against the Spanish government’s recent regulations, potentially excluding the company from receiving state aid in the development of 5G networks. Spain had committed a substantial sum of over €500 million ($527 million) to enhance rural 5G infrastructure. However, the government specified that suppliers deemed “high risk” would be barred from this aid.

Huawei’s Spanish unit swiftly filed an administrative appeal, vehemently arguing that the exclusion of certain suppliers contradicts legal standards, is disproportionate, and is seemingly driven by political motives.

According to the contentious rules, critical components of 5G networks, such as equipment, components, and associated software, should not be sourced from suppliers labeled as “high risk” by Spain. Additionally, operators who have already deployed 5G technology might face equipment replacement if their supplier falls under the high-risk category. However, the Economy Ministry, responsible for formulating these rules, has yet to finalize the list of banned suppliers, leaving the telecom industry in suspense.

Huawei contends that the regulations impede operators’ freedom to choose suppliers based on objective criteria encompassing commercial, technical, and security requirements. Instead, the company claims the rules attempt to exclude certain suppliers based on what it perceives as arbitrary political criteria.

This legal challenge unfolds against the backdrop of the European Commission’s mounting pressure on member states to phase out Huawei and ZTE Corp. equipment from their advanced mobile networks. The EU, citing security concerns, prohibited the use of these vendors’ equipment in its internal systems, intensifying scrutiny on nations relying heavily on Chinese equipment, including Germany and Spain.

As of December 2022, a report by Strand Consult revealed that 38% of Spain’s 5G network was supplied by a Chinese vendor, underscoring the significant stakes involved. This legal battle in Spain closely follows Huawei’s appeal in Portugal against a decision made by the country’s cybersecurity council, which forbids operators from utilizing Huawei’s equipment in the construction of 5G mobile networks.

The outcome of these legal challenges could significantly influence the future landscape of 5G development in Europe, as governments grapple with balancing technological advancements with national security concerns. The telecom industry and stakeholders eagerly await further developments, poised on the edge of a pivotal decision that could reshape the trajectory of 5G networks in these nations.
