iPad Mini 7 will not get a 120Hz ProMotion display, says tipster

It’s been some time since we got new iPads. However, Apple may soon break the silence with a new model— the iPad Mini 7. Reports revealed the device will be unveiled later this year or early next year. While we patiently wait for the launch, a noted tipster is here with some bad news. Apparently, the upcoming iPad Mini will lack a 120Hz ProMotion display. Here are the details.

iPad Mini 7 might launch soon

According to @Tech_Reve, the iPad mini 7 still doesn’t have a 120Hz display, with only the A-series processor expected to receive an upgrade. Speculation was widespread that Apple would adopt ProMotion with the next iPad Mini model, mainly because of the issues that emerged on the iPad Mini 6’s display. For those unaware, users widely reported a “jelly scrolling” phenomenon on the iPad Mini 6, which caused text or images on one side of the screen to appear tilted downwards (Via MacRumors).

Apple iPad Mini

The tipster suggests that the new iPad Mini may not introduce many significant upgrades in its specifications. The 2021-released iPad Mini 6 features an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display and is powered by the A15 Bionic, the same processor found in the iPhone 13. For the iPad Mini 7, Apple is rumored to use the A16 Bionic chip. According to a recent report, the new iPad is expected to launch soon, although there’s no specific timeline provided.

It’s possible that we might see minor specification improvements in the iPad Mini 7. For example, Apple could upgrade the front and rear cameras, potentially introducing features like the Photonic Engine to the iPad for the first time. However, it’s important to note that these are just speculations. We anticipate learning more details in the coming days. Meanwhile, you may check out this neat discount on the iPad Air 5.

ColorOS 14 x Android 14 beta program live for Oppo Reno 8

Google announced the stable Android 14 build earlier this month and other OEMs soon followed up with announcements of their custom Android skins. Oppo has confirmed it will unveil the latest version of its software skin— ColorOS 14— on November 16. However, the company has already started to beta testing of the new OS on many phones. The latest device to join the program is the Oppo Reno 8. Here are the details.

Reno 8 users get an early look at Android 14

The ColorOS 14 beta program was announced for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro+ back in August, and now the Reno 8 has also been added to the roster. Oppo is recruiting internal beta testers from China starting today. However, there’s no news about the beta testing extending to the global market.

Currently, the Find X6 ProOnePlus 11,  Reno 9 Pro, and handful of other Oppo phones are eligible to sign up for ColorOS 14 beta. However, the testing is limited to China. The company even released a detailed schedule earlier today, revealing when major Oppo flagships and mid-rangers will receive the ColorOS 14 beta update. As mentioned, the OS itself will be unveiled on November 16.

Oppo is yet to detail the major changes included in the ColorOS 14 update. Since it is based on Android 14, you can expect it to bring the new features Google introduced. To remind you, Android 14 brings several new features, including native spatial audio support, cross-device copy and paste, and a new media player. The Material You interface has been upgraded and the privacy and security have seen improvements.

iQOO 12 Indian launch timeline tipped, will be the first SD8 Gen 3 smartphone in the country

As the launch of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip is approaching, smartphone brands around the world are gearing up to launch new devices with the cutting-edge SoC. iQOO is rumored to be working on a new flagship, which will be called the iQOO 12 and will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. That being said, a new leak has revealed when we can expect this smartphone to arrive in India.

iQOO 12 series 2K display

As per known tipster Mukul Sharma, the iQOO 12 will be launched in India by November end, or early December. It will be the first smartphone to introduce the SD8 Gen 3 chip in the Indian market.

Leaked information suggests the iQOO 12 will feature an E7 AMOLED panel with a 2K resolution and an impressive 144Hz refresh rate. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor is expected to be coupled with the Adreno 750 GPU for robust performance.

Regarding memory and storage, users can choose between 12GB or 16GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. Although Google has already launched Android 14, it looks like the iQOO 12 could run on Origin OS 4.0, based on Android 13 out of the box.

A detailed camera leak reveals that the iQOO 12 will have some powerful sensors onboard including a 50MP wide-angle lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3X optical zoom.

The device is expected to be powered by a 5000mAh battery and supports an impressive 200W fast charging, reducing downtime significantly.

Huawei Eyes Smartphone Comeback with 70 Million Shipments in 2024, Despite US Sanctions

Things finally seem to be going well for Huawei after a long time. The company, which has been struggling under US sanctions for several years, appears to be making a comeback with its Mate 60 Series smartphones, especially thanks to its 5G capabilities. According to latest reports, Huawei is gearing up to return to its peak in smartphone production. Here are the details..

Huawei Aims High with 5G, Targeting 70 Million Units Next Year

Huawei, once a dominant player in the smartphone market, aims to return to its former glory. Despite US sanctions, a sudden decline in market share, and the loss of Google support, the company has made a comeback with the Mate 60 Pro. Now, Huawei plans to ship 60-70 million units next year.

huawei_mate_60_pro

The company aims to change the market dynamics with its record shipment rate, which is twice as much as the previous year. However, the ongoing US sanctions pose a significant disadvantage for the company. Due to 5G restrictions, Huawei had to use 4G modems in Snapdragon processors until recently. However, it recently launched a device with a Kirin 9000S, a 7nm process 5G processor.

Huawei is expected to use the same processor in its upcoming P70 Pro and Mate 70 Pro models. Emerging details suggest that the company has already begun sourcing large quantities of parts for the new smartphones. Recently, Huawei has been making significant progress in both its HarmonyOS operating system and its processors.

However, experts doubt that Huawei can achieve distribution numbers of 60-70 million units under the current US sanctions. On the other hand, Huawei’s sales are expected to increase after its 5G initiative. However, re-entering the list of best-selling smartphones seems challenging for the company for now.

Huawei’s chip manufacturer, SMIC, cannot go below 7nm with its existing lithography machines, nor can it access new lithography machines due to sanctions. This puts Huawei at a disadvantage, as TSMC now possesses 3nm fabrication technology. It remains to be seen whether users will prefer Huawei smartphone models equipped with a 7nm processor.

Google’s Project Green Light is Successfully Solving Traffic Issues, Thanks to AI

Two years since its inception, Google‘s Project Green Light is turning heads and making waves in the world of sustainable urban planning. Revealed at the company’s Sustainability ‘23 event, this initiative uses artificial intelligence (AI) to transform ordinary traffic signals into pollution-fighting tools.

Google’s Project Green Light has been deployed in Rio, Jakarta, Manchester & more

So how does this work? Simply put, Google deploys machine learning to examine Maps data, gauging traffic congestion and vehicle wait times at stoplights. This data then trains AI systems to adjust the traffic light timings, aiming to minimize both idle time and the start-and-stop nature of city driving. This isn’t just tech for tech’s sake. Google is after a lofty goal: aiding its partners in cutting down one gigaton of carbon emissions by the end of this decade.

Google Green Light

Initially a pilot in four Israeli intersections, the program’s success—a reduction in fuel use and intersection delays by up to 20 percent—led to its expansion to 12 global cities. Locations now include Rio de Janeiro, Manchester, and Jakarta, and Google has plans to broaden its reach in 2024.

Yael Maguire, Google’s VP of Geo Sustainability, said the system is unique in its scalability and cost-effectiveness, suggesting a potential 30% reduction in traffic stops. What’s more, city engineers can start seeing the impact within weeks of implementation. Results from Manchester show emission levels and air quality improving by as much as 18%.

Not to overlook the role of Google Maps here. By optimizing routes, the service has already averted around 2.4 million metric tons of carbon emissions. That’s comparable to sidelining half a million petrol cars for an entire year. Pretty impressive, right? Let us know if you think so too, in the comments below!

Leaked OnePlus Open images give a detailed look at its color options

OnePlus Open, the company’s first foldable smartphone, is expected to launch sometime this month. OnePlus has already begun teasing the device’s global market launch. However, an exact date has not yet been revealed. Leading up to the official release, leaks and rumors have already unveiled key details about the upcoming foldable. In the latest development, a report has shared high-resolution images of the OnePlus Open, showcasing its two color options in detail. Let’s take a look.

OnePlus Open

OnePlus Open could come in two colors

OnePlus Open is essentially the same device as the Oppo Find N3 Fold, which is set to launch in China. The new images shared by Winfuture once again confirm this, as it looks identical to its Oppo counterpart. However, a report from earlier today showcased the Find N3 Fold in a flashy gold color option as well, but the OnePlus Open is only pictured in black and green. You may see the additional shade during the launch.

In the pictures shared by the German publication, the OnePlus Open is featured with a round camera module. We see a triple-camera setup along with a Hasselblad branding. The device also has the signature OnePlus mute switch on one of the sides. The foldable appears to have a compact profile. If previous leaks are to be believed, the OnePlus Open will bring a 7.8-inch foldable OLED display as well as a 6.31-inch panel on the outside.

It might sport the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC under the hood, paired with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM. In the camera department, you may see a 48MP main camera with another 48MP ultrawide shooter. A 64MP telephoto sensor should also be in the mix. The OnePlus Foldable is expected to debut on October 19. It even leaked in a new hands-on video earlier today.

Volvo is Accelerating Towards a 100% BEV Lineup by 2030

As September winds down, Volvo Cars isn’t just looking back; it’s zooming ahead. With a whopping 61,666 global car sales last month—25% more than the same month last year—the Swedish automaker shows no signs of slowing down. But what’s even more interesting is how the company’s plug-in electric car sales are skyrocketing, indicating a future that’s not just electric, but supercharged.

The company’s Electric Car Segment surged by 37% in the first 9 months of 2023

While Volvo’s total car sales have risen by 19% year-over-year in the first nine months of 2023, the plug-in electric car segment surged by 37%, reaching 21,103 sales. This means plug-in cars now make up 34.2% of Volvo’s total sales, a bump from last year’s 31.3%. Notably, these figures are pushing the envelope even before Volvo launches its next generation of all-electric vehicles, expected to significantly shift the balance in favor of pure electric cars.

Volvo

The current sales trend suggests that plug-in hybrid cars are slightly outselling all-electric ones. However, given the current growth rate—especially a 52% rise in battery electric vehicles (BEVs)—this is likely to flip soon. The data backs it up: for this year so far, BEVs like the Volvo C40 Recharge and the Volvo XC40 Recharge have a 15.8% share, a staggering 149% increase year-over-year.

Volvo’s electric pivot isn’t just limited to its homeland. A look at the geography of these sales paints an inclusive picture. In Europe, plug-in car sales were 13,599, up 21%. The United States saw an explosive 161% increase to 3,052 units. Even in China, often viewed as a challenging market, Volvo notched up a 20% increase in plug-in car sales.

Here’s the kicker: Volvo isn’t just playing the numbers game. The company has a vision for a 100% BEV lineup by 2030. With upcoming models like the all-new Volvo EX90 and Volvo EM90, the automaker is not just responding to market trends, but potentially setting them.

Will the Orbit Drive Make E-Bikes Invincible or Turn Maintenance Into a Nightmare?

Electric bikes are evolving, and Driven Technologies is leading the charge with its new Orbit Drive system. Unlike typical e-bikes that use chains or belts, this new concept uses a drive shaft and fancy gears to make bikes run smoother and last longer. But there’s a catch: fixing this high-tech system isn’t easy.

Whether you pedal or use the motor, the power goes to the rear wheel

Here’s how the Orbit Drive works: When you pedal or use the motor, the power goes straight to the rear wheel through a drive shaft hidden inside the bike frame. This design promises to be very efficient, and Driven Technologies says it can last up to 10,000 miles without any need for maintenance. Even better, the company claims it’s 85% efficient, which is higher than most e-bike motors out there. If you prefer to pedal without motor help, there’s a manual mode too.

Electric

Sounds great, right? Well, not so fast. This system is complex, and any repairs or tune-ups would need a specialist. The company claims it won’t need any fixing for up to 10,000 miles, but what if something goes wrong before then? You’re likely stuck with a costly repair from an authorized dealer, as your local bike shop might not have the know-how to fix it.

So, the Orbit Drive brings a fresh spin to the growing e-bike market with its advanced design. It promises better efficiency and less maintenance, making it appealing for those who ride frequently. However, it also presents new challenges in repair and upkeep, particularly for those without technical expertise.

The question now is whether bike riders will be willing to take on the extra hassle for the sake of better efficiency. It’s a high-tech gamble that could pay off in the long run or could have users missing the simpler times of chain and derailleur systems. As e-bikes continue to gain traction, the Orbit Drive could either set a new standard or serve as a lesson in the complexities of too much innovation.

iPhone 15 gets same 5G modem as iPhone 15 Pro, despite using older A16 Bionic chip

Although the Pro iPhones got a new chip this year, the baseline devices kept last year’s A16 chip. So many people might have guessed that Apple had simply recycled the motherboards from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to create the new standard models. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to iFixit’s Lead Teardown Technician Shahram Mokhtari, the iPhone 15 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem. This is the same modem used in the iPhone 15 Pro, and it offers some noteworthy upgrades over the X65 modem used in the iPhone 14. The modem is said to be more power efficient and provides better signal acquisition over long distances.

iPhone 15 Snapdragon X70 5G modem

This means, Apple didn’t simply recycle the motherboard from the iPhone 14 Pro to create the iPhone 15. Instead, they redesigned and upgraded some of the internal components.

However, the iPhone 15’s internals are still very similar to the iPhone 14’s overall. iFixit gave the device a repairability score of 4 out of 10, because Apple often pairs parts with software components, making them difficult to repair.

With upgraded internals, the 15 and 15 Plus also support new features such as Roadside Assistance via Satellite and Crash Detection. They also share the latest Apple UWB chip with the 15 Pro and Pro Max, although the “Thread networking technology” for potentially upgraded integration with smart home devices remains exclusive to the A17 Pro-powered models.

iPhone 15 Pro Max sees notable performance and thermal improvements after iOS 17.0.3 update

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have been criticized for their poor thermal management and throttling under sustained load. But a new software update from Apple seems to have fixed these issues.

Apple released the iOS 17.0.3 update for new iPhones earlier this week. After testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with this new iOS version, Chinese reviewer “Ah Zheng Is Very Hard” found that the phone’s performance and thermals have improved significantly.

For instance, the GPU score on Geekbench 6 increased from 27,163 on iOS 17.0.2 to 27,381 on iOS 17.0.3, while CPU scores largely remained the same. This may not seem like a big difference, but gaming performance has definitely improved.

Playing Honor of Kings on the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 resulted in an average frame rate of 116.9 frames per second (FPS), while the same game yielded 105.4 FPS on iOS 17.0.2. Last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max averages 103 FPS on iOS 17.0.3, for comparison.

Likewise, the phone’s temperature while playing the game also dropped around 1°C on the back and 0.6°C on the front. Other games, such as Genshin Impact and NiShuiHan, also ran cooler after the update, with temperature differences of over 2°C. However, the reviewer didn’t share the frame rate numbers for these two games.

Apple’s iOS 17.0.3 update seems to have improved the thermal management and performance of the iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max. If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, we certainly recommend updating to iOS 17.0.3 to enjoy the improved performance.

India Arrests Vivo’s CFO and Other Executives in $120 Million Money Laundering Case

Tech companies are often caught up in scandals, such as security flaws in their devices, smartphone batteries catching fire, or even car emissions controversies. However, Vivo, particularly its Indian division, is currently making headlines for a different reason. India’s financial crime agency has arrested four top Vivo India executives, including the Chief Financial Officer, over allegations of a massive $120 million money laundering scheme. Here are the details…

Vivo India CFO Arrested on Money Laundering Charges

Vivo India is accused of orchestrating a $120 million money laundering scheme. The Enforcement Directorate alleges that Vivo India siphoned this sum through shell companies and fake directors. As a result, the agency has arrested four top Vivo India executives and anyone else involved. Including Vivo India’s Chief Financial Officer.

Vivo India

The ED’s investigation traces back to July 2022 when they initiated raids across Vivo India’s offices and warehouses. These searches led to the confiscation of assets and cash valued at about $50 million. The scandal’s tentacles reach beyond Vivo. Also arrested in connection with the case was the Managing Director of Lava International.

Of course, all the details about the topic are not yet clear, and Vivo has not made an official statement about the scandal as of now. However, as soon as additional information emerges, we will inform you through Gizmochina. It is also worth noting that international companies often encounter issues in certain regions where they operate.

For instance, not long ago, Xiaomi was accused by the ED of making illegal remittances to foreign entities by disguising them as royalty payments. Financial schemes that are considered minor offenses in some countries can be seen as serious crimes in others, leading to these problems.

Huawei challenges Spain’s 5G Aid rules amidst rising tensions

Huawei Technologies, the Chinese telecommunications giant, has taken legal action against the Spanish government’s recent regulations, potentially excluding the company from receiving state aid in the development of 5G networks. Spain had committed a substantial sum of over €500 million ($527 million) to enhance rural 5G infrastructure. However, the government specified that suppliers deemed “high risk” would be barred from this aid.

Huawei’s Spanish unit swiftly filed an administrative appeal, vehemently arguing that the exclusion of certain suppliers contradicts legal standards, is disproportionate, and is seemingly driven by political motives.

According to the contentious rules, critical components of 5G networks, such as equipment, components, and associated software, should not be sourced from suppliers labeled as “high risk” by Spain. Additionally, operators who have already deployed 5G technology might face equipment replacement if their supplier falls under the high-risk category. However, the Economy Ministry, responsible for formulating these rules, has yet to finalize the list of banned suppliers, leaving the telecom industry in suspense.

Huawei contends that the regulations impede operators’ freedom to choose suppliers based on objective criteria encompassing commercial, technical, and security requirements. Instead, the company claims the rules attempt to exclude certain suppliers based on what it perceives as arbitrary political criteria.

This legal challenge unfolds against the backdrop of the European Commission’s mounting pressure on member states to phase out Huawei and ZTE Corp. equipment from their advanced mobile networks. The EU, citing security concerns, prohibited the use of these vendors’ equipment in its internal systems, intensifying scrutiny on nations relying heavily on Chinese equipment, including Germany and Spain.

As of December 2022, a report by Strand Consult revealed that 38% of Spain’s 5G network was supplied by a Chinese vendor, underscoring the significant stakes involved. This legal battle in Spain closely follows Huawei’s appeal in Portugal against a decision made by the country’s cybersecurity council, which forbids operators from utilizing Huawei’s equipment in the construction of 5G mobile networks.

The outcome of these legal challenges could significantly influence the future landscape of 5G development in Europe, as governments grapple with balancing technological advancements with national security concerns. The telecom industry and stakeholders eagerly await further developments, poised on the edge of a pivotal decision that could reshape the trajectory of 5G networks in these nations.
