ASML strengthens presence in Japan to boost cutting-edge Chip production for startup Rapidus

ASML is making significant moves in Japan to support the chip production efforts of Japanese startup Rapidus. ASML plans to establish a tech support center in Hokkaido by the latter half of the next year, and it aims to increase its workforce in Japan by 40% by around 2028.

Rapidus, backed by substantial funding from the Japanese government, is venturing into the competitive market of manufacturing custom-made, cutting-edge microchips. The company is set to produce chips at the challenging 2-nanometer process node, relying on ASML’s advanced EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography tools for the complex circuitry of these chips.

With the backdrop of U.S.-China relations, many overseas tech companies are choosing to establish new operations in Japan. ASML is renowned as the world’s top supplier of photolithography equipment, which plays a crucial role in etching circuits onto computer chips. Furthermore, it is the sole global manufacturer of EUV lithography equipment, a necessity for mass-producing advanced semiconductors at processes of 5 to 7 nanometers and below.

ASML’s expansion in Japan will see a tech support base near Chitose, Hokkaido, where approximately 50 engineers will install EUV equipment on a prototype production line at semiconductor plants being constructed by Rapidus. This support extends to assisting with startup operations and ongoing maintenance.

Once Rapidus commences production, Japan will join the ranks of the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, and Ireland as locations with EUV-equipped mass-production lines. This expansion underlines Japan’s growing importance in the East Asian semiconductor supply chain, given its increasing presence of related material makers.

Amidst rising geopolitical risks, U.S. chip equipment manufacturers are also expanding their operations in Japan. Applied Materials is planning to increase its workforce in Japan by 60% in the coming years, while Lam Research is considering opening a new facility in Hokkaido after relocating and expanding its technical support base in Kumamoto.

Meanwhile, Japanese chipmaking equipment manufacturers are making their mark abroad, with Tokyo Electron expanding its technology development facility in South Korea and Hitachi High-Tech continuing to build and expand bases in the U.S., South Korea, and Taiwan.

As ASML strengthens its presence in Japan and Rapidus strives to pioneer advanced chip manufacturing, the global semiconductor industry is witnessing a dynamic shift, with Japan emerging as a critical player in this high-stakes arena.

French authorities review Apple’s Software update for iPhone 12 amid radiation concerns

After France imposed a ban on the sale of Apple’s iPhone 12 devices due to concerns over electromagnetic radiation, the French authorities have received a software update from the tech giant.

Apple faced a September 27 deadline to implement changes after French regulators ordered the suspension of sales for older iPhone 12 models, citing excessive electromagnetic radiation emissions. French authorities had warned of a potential product recall if Apple did not provide a software solution to address the radiation issue.

Following the controversy, Apple had committed to releasing a software update to address the concerns raised by French regulators. However, as of now, official communication from the ministry confirming compliance with the update is still pending, as authorities meticulously review the software patch.

The French authorities’ decision to suspend sales of iPhone 12 models came after tests conducted by France’s Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) revealed that the devices exceeded permissible radiation exposure limits. Specifically, the tests measured the smartphone’s Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which gauges the rate of radiofrequency absorbed by a user’s body while using the device.

ANFR reported that accredited laboratories found a SAR of 5.74 watts per kilogram when the smartphone was held or carried in a pocket. Notably, this exceeded the European standard for SAR in such scenarios, which is set at 4.0 watts per kilogram.

Apple had initially contested the French findings, asserting that the iPhone 12 had received certification from multiple international bodies as compliant with global radiation standards. However, in a significant turn of events, Apple ultimately committed to issuing a software update that would accommodate the testing methods employed in France.

As the French authorities continue their review of the software update, the outcome remains uncertain, and the future availability of iPhone 12 models in the French market hangs in the balance.

Mini’s Latest Electric Bike Features Built-in GPS & a 250-Watt Motor

Mini has always been a brand synonymous with compact efficiency and iconic design. Now, the automaker is diving into two-wheel territory with its latest release, the Mini E-Bike 1, a collaborative effort with French brand Angell Mobility.

The E-bike seems like the Swiss Army Knife of e-bikes

Unlike any regular e-bike, the Mini E-Bike 1 is all about customization. Whether you’re tall or short, this bike can adjust to fit you. Designed mainly for city commuting, it features an aluminum frame and a thermoplastic chain guard. Think of it as the Swiss Army knife of e-bikes; it’s built to adapt to various types of riding.

Electric

When it comes to power, the Mini E-Bike 1 doesn’t skimp. It runs on a 250-watt rear hub motor, controllable through an integrated cockpit or even your smartphone. This ensures you can tweak performance settings on the go. Plus, the bike sports a 2.1-kilogram swappable battery pack, cleverly hidden under what you might mistake for a luggage rack. It’s not for carrying bags, but it does make charging a breeze.

What sets this e-bike apart even more is its app. With a few taps on your phone, you can lock, unlock, and locate your bike via built-in GPS. Need to ride before sunrise or after sunset? No problem—the bike comes with front and rear lights to keep you visible and safe.

This futuristic ride is available in two eye-catching colors: Ocean Wave Green and Vibrant Silver, a nod to Mini’s iconic palette. And here’s the kicker: the Mini E-Bike 1 is a limited-edition masterpiece. Only 1,959 will be produced, paying homage to the year the first Mini Cooper rolled out. As for the cost? It’s tagged at $3,716, making it a premium but feature-packed investment for the modern commuter.

Hong Kong Struggles with Generative AI Amidst Copyrights & Legal Concerns

As Hong Kong strives to solidify its role as a global financial hub, the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT faces roadblocks, largely due to copyright and legal concerns. Despite the buzz, businesses are taking cautious steps in integrating these tools into their workflow.

Understanding Complex Language Models is an uphill task

Herbert Chia, who helms the data governance steering committee at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, pointed out at an IAB Hong Kong event that it’s not just about jumping on the AI bandwagon. “Understanding and adopting these large language models is a complex task,” he said. Chia’s perspective comes with weight, given his past role at Alibaba Group between 2010 and 2016.

Artificial Intelligence

Hong Kong’s banking giant, HSBC, is one of those treading carefully. The bank dipped its toes into generative AI by launching an ad campaign featuring an AI-generated avatar of Hong Kong comedian Dayo Wong. The move sparked new challenges, primarily concerning ownership of the generated image. “It’s uncharted territory. Traditionally, the celebrity-owned the image rights, but now we’re generating something new,” said Cheuk Shum, head of marketing for Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC Hong Kong.

Interestingly, Hong Kong’s internet users have been quicker to adapt. A chatbot aggregator, Poe, developed by Q&A platform Quora, claims nearly 49% of its global user base from the city. This suggests that while the general public is eager to embrace AI, businesses remain skeptical due to murky legal waters.

Latest Google Pixel 8 Pro Leak Reveals a Matte Black Back Finish

Recent leaks about the Google Pixel 8 Pro are stirring up discussions, not just about the device’s specs but about Google’s design choices. Specifically, the leaked images from a Vietnamese Facebook Leaks page hint at a matte black finish for the upcoming model. This detail, though seemingly small, could signal a broader shift in smartphone design, especially for Google’s Pixel series.

Google seems to be listening to their customers for the next Pixel, it seems.

Google seems to be listening to its fans, who have been eager to see matte finishes on Pixel phones. With the Pixel Fold already featuring this finish, there’s a fair chance that this could become a mainstay for future Pixel devices. But what does this shift mean for the industry as a whole?

Pixel 8 Pro

The trend toward matte finishes could be indicative of a consumer-driven push for utility and comfort. A matte back is generally easier to grip than its glossy counterpart, reducing the risk of accidental drops. It also minimizes fingerprint marks, offering a cleaner, more premium look.

The leaked photos also raise questions about exclusivity. Google’s leaked renders have shown other color variants like Sky Blue and Peony Rose, but not in glossy finishes. Will matte black be an exclusive or a standard feature? If it’s exclusive, Google could be targeting a particular audience that values subtlety and practicality over flashy aesthetics.

However, the leak also suggests caution. The images show a not-so-perfectly aligned bezel, casting doubts on the leak’s authenticity. So, it’s better to hold off on any conclusions until Google makes an official announcement.

Huawei Solves Apple Vision Pro’s Biggest Problem: Eyes Move With You

Technology, just as it simplifies our lives, can also introduce new problems. For example, “motion sickness”, a nuisance today, was a concern that no one had to deal with 100 years ago. For those unfamiliar, motion sickness is a feeling of nausea, dizziness, and vomiting that can occur when traveling in a car, boat, plane, or other moving vehicles. It can also be experienced during amusement park rides or in virtual reality settings. Now, Huawei has released an anti-motion sickness patent aimed at completely eliminating this issue. Here are the details…

Huawei’s motion sickness prevention system could be a game-changer for VR

Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives conflicting information from the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems. For example, when someone is riding in a car, their eyes may see the car interior as stationary, but their vestibular system will sense the car’s movement. This conflict can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Fortunately, Huawei has released a patent for a new system that could help to prevent motion sickness.

The system works by generating real-time images of the vehicle’s movement relative to the road or ground. These images are then displayed on the vehicle’s infotainment system, allowing passengers to see themselves moving along with the vehicle. This helps to reduce or eliminate the conflict between visual and vestibular signals, which is the main cause of motion sickness.

Huawei’s motion sickness prevention system would address this conflict by providing passengers with accurate visual information about the vehicle’s movement. This would allow passengers to “follow the body with their eyes,” which could help to prevent or reduce the symptoms of motion sickness.

The system is still in the patent stage, and it is not yet known when it will be available in vehicles. However, the technology has the potential to be a major breakthrough in the fight against motion sickness. Especially considering the increase in popularity of AR/VR technology.

China’s First Suspended Monorail Opens for Operation, Offering a Futuristic Ride

Technology continues to simplify our lives and save us time. For instance, distances that once took a long time to cover can now be traversed in just hours or even minutes. However, this convenience comes with its set of challenges. For example, the environmental pollution caused by our cars is silently pushing our planet towards disaster.

Recognizing this, authorities are hoping to mitigate traffic and environmental pollution with eco-friendly public transportation solutions. China is among the countries leading this initiative. Recently, the country opened its first suspended monorail for operation, offering a futuristic mode of transport. Here are the details…

Suspended Monorail Opens in China, Offering Stunning Views and a Glimpse into the Future

For those who might not know, a suspended monorail is a type of monorail where the train hangs from the bottom of the track. This design has several advantages over traditional monorails, such as reduced noise and vibration, enhanced safety, and a more efficient use of space. Recently, China introduced this beneficial public transportation system to its citizens. China’s first suspended monorail line began operating in Wuhan.

China's First Suspended Monorail
China’s First Suspended Monorail

The line, called the Wuhan Guanggu Aerial Rail Tourist Line, is located in the city’s east lake high-tech zone and is designed to connect the Nine Peaks National Forest Park and the Longquanshan Ming Chuwang Tomb Archaeological Site Park. The line is 10.5 kilometers long and has six stations. Trains run at a top speed of 60 kilometers per hour and can carry up to 220 passengers. They are fully automated and have large windows that offer passengers panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Of course, the cost of being part of such a comprehensive project is quite high. The total cost of the project was 2.5 billion Yuan, which is approximately US$341 million. However, money is not the only thing we need to be a part of such a project; we also need time. For instance, construction began in 2019 and was completed in 2023. We hope that the number of such eco-friendly projects increases over time.

New Samsung LPCAMM Memory Modules Offer Up to 128GB of DDR5 for Laptops in 60% Less Space

Samsung has unveiled a new memory module named Low Power Compression Attached Memory Module or LPCAMM. The biggest difference between this memory technology and traditional DDR5 memory is its overall higher efficiency. Furthermore, LPCAMM modules consume 70% less power, which can enhance battery life in laptops and other mobile devices. Additionally, they accomplish all of this while taking up 60% less space. The smaller size of LPCAMM memories could lead to the development of thinner and lighter laptops.

Samsung says that LPCAMM modules could also be used in other types of mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones. The company has not yet announced when LPCAMM modules will be available to consumers. However, the company says that it is working with partners to bring LPCAMM-equipped devices to market in the near future.
