Xiaomi 14 Main Camera Sensor, Storage Details Tipped

Xiaomi traditionally launches its flagship series smartphones at the end of the year. This means that we are still months away from the next-generation Xiaomi 14 phones. They are likely tipped to debut in November or December this year. Now, leaks and rumors about the Xiaomi 14 have started surfacing. Last week, Digital Chat Station had shared a schematic of the Xiaomi 14. Now the reliable tipster has shared new information about the upcoming offering.

Xiaomi 14 main camera and storage tipped

As per DCS, the Xiaomi 14 will feature an even larger 50MP main camera sensor than its predecessor. It will have a 1/1.28” sensor paired with a medium-telephoto unit. The smartphone is also tipped to come with ultra-narrow bezels on a straight display. The tipster also adds that the Xiaomi 14 will be offered in 512GB and 1TB storage options. To recall, the current-generation Xiaomi 13 maxes out at 512GB.

Previously, DCS had revealed that the Xiaomi 14 will be backed by an upgraded 4,860mAh battery unit with support for 90W wired and 50W wireless charging. It is expected to be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagship processor.

The previously leaked schematic of the Xiaomi 14 revealed a flat display on the front with negligible bezels and a center-aligned punch-hole cutout. The back panel of the device has a square-shaped camera module along with a sensor placement that is similar to the current Xiaomi 13 series. However, the camera cutouts are larger for the main and telephoto lenses on the upcoming device compared to its predecessor.

Nubia Z50S Pro Roundup: Launch Date, Design, Specs, and Expected Price

Nubia is gearing up to unveil its next-gen flagship smartphone. This device is officially called Nubia Z50S Pro.

The brand has confirmed to take the wraps off this phone later this week. Ahead of that, it has been teasing the features of the product.

Apart from official teasers, the handset has also made its appearance on certification websites. Let’s go through everything known about Nubia’s upcoming premium smartphone.

Nubia Z50S Pro

Nubia Z50S Pro Launch Date

The Nubia Z50S Pro is scheduled to launch in China on July 20 (Thursday). It will be announced at a conference that is set to begin at 2 PM GMT+8.

The event will be live-streamed on Weibo and other leading Chinese video streaming platforms.

Nubia Z50S Pro Design

Just like almost all premium smartphones from Chinese OEMs, the forthcoming Nubia Z50S Pro also sports a circular camera island. But unlike most of them, it has a flat frame and a non-curved display to go with it.

The rear part of the device seems to be leather but it is actually an AG glass with a leather pattern. Apart from regular power and volume keys, it also has a third physical key.

This button could most likely act as a camera shutter. Perhaps, it could be used for other actions as well. Also, the power key is red in color, which makes it stand out.

Finally, the phone comes in two colors, such as black and light brown.

Nubia Z50S Pro Specifications

Thanks to official brand teasers and certifications, we know a few things about the Nubia Z50S Pro. First and foremost, it is powered by an overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset.

Further, it flaunts a 6.78-inch flat OLED display. The screen is marketed as eye-friendly as it supports DC dimming as well as 2160Hz PWM dimming.

The panel offers a 1.5K resolution, 452 PPI, and a 93.89% screen-to-body ratio. Lastly, it carries support for a 1000Hz instant touch sampling rate and covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

As for optics, the handset uses a triple camera system comprising wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto lenses. The primary camera is a 1-inch sensor as found on other Chinese premium smartphones.

Last but not least, the phone draws energy from a 5,100mAh battery and charges at a maximum rate of 80W.

Nubia Z50S Pro Expected Price

The Nubia Z50S Pro is the successor of the Nubia Z40S Pro. The last year’s model was introduced at a starting price of ¥3,399 (~$475).

The new model arrives with several notable upgrades. Thus, it could cost more than its predecessor.

We wouldn’t be surprised if the Nubia Z50S Pro starts at ¥3,999. Perhaps, it could be cheaper as well.

Sony and Microsoft strike deal: Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation

Sony and Microsoft have struck a deal to ensure that the former’s PlayStation will receive every installment of the popular Call of Duty franchise for at least the next 10 years. The news follows shortly after Microsoft won against the FTC for its Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Sony signs 10-year deal with Microsoft for Call of Duty on PlayStation

Phil Spencer, the Microsoft Gaming and Xbox head shared on Twitter that “We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and @PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. We look forward to a future where players globally have more choice to play their favorite games.” The announcement comes amongst fears of anti-competitive practices from Microsoft that were voiced by Sony.

Call of Duty PlayStation

The Japanese tech giant claimed that the American company could pull out the Call of Duty franchise from the PlayStation. However, it appears that this will not be the case. In simpler terms, the gaming industry’s massive shooter series will remain on platforms that it has already existed on, despite Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. So you can play it on your preferred console, be it Xbox or PlayStation.

According to Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith “From Day One of this acquisition, we’ve been committed to addressing the concerns of regulators, platform and game developers, and consumers. Even after we cross the finish line for this deal’s approval, we will remain focused on ensuring that Call of Duty remains available on more platforms and for more consumers than ever before.”

How Mainstream Smartphone Brands are Moving Towards Sustainable Smartphones

Even Mainstream brands like Apple, Google, Samsung, and Lenovo are making small but meaningful strides towards sustainability.

Apple

Apple has been forging ahead in the journey towards eco-friendly phone production, evidenced by the environmental initiatives in its iPhone 14 series. The company now utilizes 100% recycled gold in the wiring of all its cameras and the plating of multiple printed circuit boards, showing a commitment to resource efficiency and reduction of environmental harm.

The packaging for Apple products has also evolved, now being 94% fiber-based as the company has worked diligently to eliminate plastic from its packages. Further demonstrating a commitment to the environment, all of the wood fiber used is either recycled or responsibly sourced.

Apple’s environmental efforts extend to energy use as well, with over 25% of the electricity used in the manufacturing of the iPhone 14 series being sourced from clean energy projects initiated by their suppliers.

Moreover, the iPhone 14 series has made strides in removing harmful materials from its devices. Its phones are designed with arsenic-free glass, and they’re free from mercury, brominated flame retardants, PVC, and beryllium, showcasing Apple’s intention to create products that are not just user-friendly but also eco-friendly.

Google

Google has been intensifying its efforts to enhance the sustainability of the Pixel 7 series. One of the primary initiatives involves increasing the use of recycled materials. Approximately 30% of all materials used in Google’s new products launched in 2022 were recycled content, spanning across components made of aluminum, stainless steel, rare earth magnet, glass and plastic. In particular, 48% of the plastic materials came from recycled content.

The carbon footprint of product manufacturing is also significantly reduced with recycled materials. For instance, the aluminum in the phone enclosures of Pixel 7 and 7 Pro is made with 100 percent recycled content, leading to a reduction in carbon footprint by over 35% compared to primary aluminum use.

In addition to sourcing materials, Google has partnered with iFixit to provide genuine Pixel spare parts, tools, and repair documentation for models as far back as Pixel 2, enhancing repairability and prolonging device lifespan.

Google’s commitment to sustainability also extends to its product packaging. With a goal to eliminate plastic from its hardware product packaging by 2025, the packaging for Pixel 7 already uses 99% plastic-free materials. This effort led to a 97% reduction in Pixel packaging plastic in 2022, along with a 54% decrease in package volume and over 50% reduction in weight compared to the first Pixel phone.

Samsung

Samsung’s recent push for eco-friendly smartphone production with the S23 series is represented through a wide array of sustainable practices in its manufacturing process. The company now incorporates recycled plastics with 5% repurposed fishing nets and 15% recycled water barrels in the construction of its bottom speaker module lower. The top speaker module, volume keys, and power keys also utilize recycled plastics, with a composition of 20% recycled water barrels.

Stepping into the Era of Sustainable Smartphones

We live in an age where our reliance on smartphones is a fundamental part of life, dictating everything from communication to productivity. This digital necessity, however, comes with an environmental price tag. Hence, the shift to sustainable smartphones is not just a viable option, but a critical necessity.

Apple’s recent patent hints at the development of a rollable iPhone

Apple has filed a patent for a device with a rollable or scrollable display, suggesting that future products such as iPhone, iPad, televisions, desktop displays, and vehicle dashboards could feature this innovation. The US Patent & Trademark Office recently published the patent application, which continues Apple’s exploration of expandable displays that began in 2014.

Apple Explores Rollable Displays

The invention refers to a device with a display that can shift between a rolled-up state for storage and an unrolled state for viewing. In the unrolled state, the display would be planar, while in the rolled state, it would bend around an axis onto a roller for storage. The display could have a pixel array for image production and a transparent protective layer, which may include a layer of locally thinned glass to aid bending.

The outward-facing surface of the protective layer would bear potential exposure to objects causing scratches. However, the inward-facing surface would be protected and likely have fewer surface irregularities. Apple plans to prevent glass layer cracking by configuring the display to roll such that the outward-facing surface receives compressive stress. This would help prevent any scratches from causing damage to the display when rolled.

Several companies, like LG, OPPO, and Motorola, have already been actively exploring the rollable sector. LG has produced multiple purchasable rollable TVs and had also announced plans for a rollable phone. Although LG’s rollable phone never reached the market, a video leak suggests that the concept phone was actually real featuring a motorized screen extension.

Motorola, on the other hand, showcased its rollable concept phone, the Moto Rizr, at the Mobile World Congress. The device boasts a 5-inch display, expandable to 6.5 inches, that can adjust to apps automatically for a more immersive experience. However, the phone is still a concept and is yet to hit the consumer market. Xiaomi also patented smartphones with rollable display a few months back.

The patent filing by Apple does not necessarily mean that a rollable iPhone is imminent. The company might apply the rollable display technology to other products as well. Although the rollable screen products might be far from now but according to rumors Apple is actually working on a foldable MacBook which is expected to launch in 2026.
