Geekbench confirms Samsung Galaxy S23 FE to be powered by Exynos 2200 SoC

According to recent reports, Samsung is set to release the Galaxy S23 FE in the last quarter of 2023, following a break from launching a Fan Edition phone last year. Despite early leaks and certifications indicating a highly anticipated device, there has been speculation surrounding the controversial Exynos 2200 SoC potentially powering the smartphone. Unfortunately for eager fans awaiting the Galaxy S23 FE, these fears have been confirmed with a recent Geekbench listing.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE with model number SM-711B has appeared on the Geekbench 6 compute test revealing many key details. It has 8GB RAM onboard along with Android 13 and an octa-core processor with a base clock of 1.82 GHz and a boost clock of 2.80 GHz. The s5e9925 motherboard and the Samsung Xclipse 920 GPU undoubtedly confirm that this is indeed the Exynos 2200 chipset.

Samsung

Although the Exynos 2200 was initially unveiled alongside the Galaxy S22 series, it fell short of the high expectations as a rival to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Its performance improvements are modest, with only a marginal 5% boost in CPU performance compared to its predecessor, the Exynos 2100 found in the Galaxy S21 FE. On the other hand, the Exynos 2200 does offer around 15% better GPU performance. Therefore, if you’re considering upgrading from the Galaxy S21 FE, the performance gains you can expect with the Exynos 2200 might not be significant.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE specs (rumored)

Rumored specifications for the Galaxy S23 FE suggest it will feature a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. It is expected to offer users a choice between different storage configurations, including options for 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. Reports also indicate that the device will be equipped with a 4,500mAh battery and support 25W fast charging. Notably, there are speculations of a significant camera improvement on the Galaxy S23 FE, potentially featuring a 50MP camera compared to the 12MP camera on its predecessor, the Galaxy S21 FE.

OpenAI has made the GPT-4 Chat Model Public to All Paying API Customers

In a major AI-related development, OpenAI has announced that all paying API customers now have access to the highly praised (and awaited) GPT-4 model. Building upon the success of the ChatGPT API launched in March, OpenAI has been working tirelessly to enhance the chat-based models and expand their capabilities. The goal is to create a future where chat-based models can cater to a wide array of use cases, revolutionizing the way we interact with artificial intelligence.

The company also believes that the GPT-3.5 Turbo and Dall.E are production-scale ready

GPT-4, touted as OpenAI’s most advanced model to date, has generated tremendous excitement among developers. Since its initial introduction, millions of developers have eagerly requested access to the GPT-4 API, leading to a surge of innovative products that leverage its powerful capabilities. Starting today, existing API developers with a history of successful payments can access the GPT-4 API with an impressive 8K context. OpenAI plans to gradually open up access to new developers by the end of the month and subsequently increase rate-limits based on compute availability.

GPT-4

As part of their ongoing efforts to improve their offerings, OpenAI has also made the GPT-3.5 Turbo, DALL·E, and Whisper APIs generally available. These models have undergone extensive testing and are now deemed stable and ready for production-scale use. OpenAI is currently working on enabling fine-tuning for GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo, with plans to make this feature available later in the year.

A significant shift in OpenAI’s approach is the transition from text completions to chat completions. The introduction of the Chat Completions API in March has proved to be a game-changer, accounting for a staggering 97% of API GPT usage. OpenAI has learned that structured prompts often yield better results than freeform text prompts. The chat-based paradigm not only handles a wide range of previous use cases but also accommodates new conversational needs, offering developers enhanced flexibility and specificity. With its structured interface and multi-turn conversation capabilities, the Chat Completions API enables developers to create immersive conversational experiences and tackle various completion tasks, including text summarization, code completion, and few-shot learning. Additionally, it mitigates the risk of prompt injection attacks by separating user-provided content from instructions.

OpenAI is committed to investing heavily in the development of chat completions, recognizing its potential to provide developers with an increasingly capable and user-friendly experience. The team is actively working on addressing any remaining gaps in the Chat Completions API, such as log probabilities for completion tokens and reduced “chattiness” of responses. These improvements will further refine the user experience and solidify OpenAI’s position as a leader in AI-powered conversations.

Quick Take: Is Nothing’s Transparent Cable Innovative?

When it comes to tech design, most brands used to focus purely on the devices, ignoring accessories like charging cables. But some like OnePlus changed this trend with their bright red colored charging cables. Taking inspiration from Carl Pei’s old company, Nothing too is looking to innovate accessory design. It recently revealed a transparent USB Type-C cable designed for the upcoming Nothing Phone (2).

Let’s take a closer look at this “see-through” cable design and explore what makes it so intriguing.

What does Nothing’s Transparent Cable look like?

Imagine holding a cable with transparent shells, housing the Type-C connectors at both ends. Yes, you heard it right – this cable provides a captivating glimpse into the inner workings of the connector.

Nothing Transparent Cable

The Nothing transparent cable showcases a sleek and sophisticated design. While the exact details are yet to be confirmed, it appears that only the outer shell of the cable, housing the Type-C connectors, is transparent. The transparent shell, made of hardened transparent polycarbonate or clear rubber, offers a visually appealing aesthetic. The Nothing branding is etched on the connector. The rest of the cable is opaque white, which complements the transparent portion.

Nothing says it took 2 years to perfect this Design

The transparent shell has reportedly undergone a unique moulding process, resulting in a seamless iron shell, free from lines and surface defects. This shell is then subjected to sandblasting, pre-plating, and electroless plating to make it resistant to scratches.

Nothing says that it has tested this cable to make sure it is durable. It has been put through more than 25 rigorous tests, including stringent plugging and unplugging, salt spray, and current resistance tests. The cable’s endurance is impressive, withstanding bending and passing over 16,000 times, a robust 60% beyond industry standards.

The brand further revealed that the cable’s journey from concept to reality spanned over two years, with over 20 design concepts initially in play. Many were discarded as they were deemed too challenging to manufacture.

From the picture shared on social media, it does look like the cable offers a good balance between avant-garde design and practical manufacturability.

Transparent Cables are not really unique

Transparent cables are not entirely new; indeed, a quick Google search reveals numerous examples from various manufacturers that are available on Amazon. However, it’s not just about being transparent. It’s about how this transparency is employed and executed.

Transparent USB-C Cable

Many existing transparent cables on the market can seem a bit over the top with their design approach, often featuring vibrant lights and bold colors. While these designs may catch your eye initially, they can also come across as gimmicky, especially when the novelty wears off. The aesthetic may not always blend well with the premium and minimalist design language that many tech devices follow these days.

This is where we feel Nothing’s transparent cable stands out. The cable doesn’t incorporate flashy lights or extravagant design elements. Instead, it focuses on simplicity, cleanliness, and a premium feel. This minimalist, clean aesthetic is what sets it apart from the crowd, and Nothing seems to have made a good design choice.

Coming to the Real Question: Will the Novelty Wear Off?

Transparent accessories have made sporadic appearances in the tech world, often as limited-edition novelties, while mass-market versions tend to feature solid or gradient colors. This is true both for the devices and accessories.

Nothing Transparent USB-C Cable

So Nothing’s transparent cable might look cool at first glance, but is there a chance the novelty will wear off?

Well, hard to say that right now. Nothing is clearly invested in the transparent design philosophy and many consumers seem to resonate with this approach, as evidenced by the relative success of their first-generation phone and earbuds. Even if this transparent cable might not appeal to the mass market, there seems to be a section of the population who value the opportunity to use something that stands out.

Final Verdict: Cool or Not?

Undeniably, the Nothing Transparent cable has a unique elegance in its design. From my perspective, the cable has its charm and I am attracted to its uniqueness. It would certainly make for an interesting conversation piece.

But is it truly a game-changing invention? I’m not so sure.

Its standout feature – transparent ends – might not suffice to distinguish it from the crowd. The majority of the cable remains opaque and a rather plain white, diminishing the impact of the transparency.

Ultimately, design preference remains a matter of personal taste. The charm of the cable hinges on whether the novelty of partial transparency appeals to you. There are certainly those who will continue to gravitate towards the predictability of standard, solid-colored cables.

So, the ball is in your court. What do you think of this transparent cable? Does it catch your fancy?

Electric Vehicle Market is showing signs of Saturation, Volkswagen Group China CEO Says

Volkswagen Group China CEO Ralf Brandstaetter has expressed concerns about the electric car market, warning that it is showing signs of “overheating.” Speaking at the 2023 China Automobile Forum in Shanghai, Brandstaetter highlighted the high capital investment and intense competition in the sector as potential threats to the interests of consumers.

Around 150 new Electric Vehicles will be Launched this year which may saturate the market

Brandstaetter drew attention to the increasing number of players in the market, with over 120 car makers currently operating in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. He also noted that approximately 150 new EV models are expected to be launched in 2023 alone. Such intense competition, coupled with high battery prices, creates significant economic pressures and necessitates substantial capital investment for short-term sales success.

Volkswagen

The CEO pointed out that many EV startups are struggling financially, leading some to exit the market or seek new capital investment urgently. In light of these challenges, Brandstaetter emphasized the need for consolidation within the industry.

Brandstaetter specifically criticized the discounting strategies employed by EV manufacturers in China, citing potential harm to consumer interests. He cautioned against deep price cuts and highlighted the potential consequences, such as reduced support and services for retired brands or diminished resale value for consumers.

In contrast to some competitors, Brandstaetter asserted that Volkswagen Group would prioritize profitability over pursuing sales and growth at any cost. He vowed that the company would not engage in unhealthy market competition, taking a subtle dig at Tesla, which has resorted to frequent price reductions to drive sales.

Despite acknowledging the slowdown in sales of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, Brandstaetter confirmed that Volkswagen Group remained committed to the Chinese market. The company plans to introduce 17 new ICE models in China by 2030, while also promoting the development of hybrid technology and gradually transitioning petrol models into plug-in hybrids. As the industry evolves, consolidation and well-laid-out market strategies will be essential to ensure the long-term success of the electric car market.

French Police will now be able to Spy on Suspects via Smartphones Remotely

Late on Wednesday, July 5, French lawmakers reached a consensus to grant police the authority to remotely access and activate the cameras, microphones, and GPS systems of suspects’ smartphones and other devices. This provision, included in a broader justice reform bill, has sparked criticism from both left-wing activists and defenders of civil liberties, who argue that it represents a step towards an authoritarian surveillance state. Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti sought to allay concerns, stating that the measure would only be utilized in “dozens of cases a year.”

A lot of ethical dilemmas will surround this decision in the near future

The scope of the surveillance measure encompasses laptops, cars, and other connected objects, in addition to phones. It permits the geolocation of individuals suspected of crimes punishable by a minimum of five years’ imprisonment. Moreover, law enforcement would be able to remotely activate devices to capture audio and visual evidence of individuals implicated in acts of terrorism, as well as delinquency and organized crime.

Smartphones

Digital rights group La Quadrature du Net voiced significant apprehensions over these provisions, citing potential infringements on fundamental liberties. The organization emphasized the rights to security, privacy, private correspondence, and freedom of movement, arguing that this proposal marks a worrisome trajectory toward excessive security measures.

During the parliamentary debate, MPs aligned with President Emmanuel Macron’s party introduced an amendment that restricts the use of remote spying to instances “when justified by the nature and seriousness of the crime” and “for a strictly proportional duration.” Furthermore, any utilization of this provision must receive judicial approval, and the total duration of surveillance cannot exceed six months. Importantly, individuals in sensitive professions, including doctors, journalists, lawyers, judges, and MPs, would be exempt from being targeted.

Responding to concerns about excessive surveillance, Dupond-Moretti dismissed comparisons to George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984,” stating, “We’re far away from the totalitarianism of 1984.” He argued that the new law would save lives in the future.

Pokémon Unveils Innovative Pokémon Sleep Game to add a Spin to your Bedtime Routine

In a new announcement, Pokémon has introduced an innovative game that promises to transform the way we sleep. Pokémon Sleep aims to turn slumber into an exciting adventure, providing entertainment and a fresh perspective on our nightly routines (if you thought that wasn’t possible in the technology-driven world today).

The user’s quality of sleep will greatly affect their score the next morning

The game invites players to embark on a captivating journey set on a serene island, where they will conduct research on the sleep patterns of Pokémon. Assisted by the island’s prominent inhabitants, the hulking and tranquil Snorlax, and Professor Neroli, a renowned Pokémon sleep researcher, players will explore the mysteries of restful nights.

POKEMON SLEEP

The concept behind Pokémon Sleep is remarkably simple. Before going to bed, players place their smartphones near their pillows, allowing the game to record and analyze their sleep data. The duration and quality of sleep directly impact the player’s score upon awakening, as well as the appearance of Pokémon around the affable Snorlax. Pokémon with similar sleep styles will gather around the giant creature, creating a charming morning experience.

Part of the excitement lies in discovering Pokémon in rare sleep styles that are rarely observed in everyday encounters. Each Pokémon boasts a unique range of sleep patterns, enticing players to explore and complete their sleep style collection, known as the “sleep style dex.”

Enhancing the experience is the Pokémon GO Plus + device, an accessory that facilitates sleep monitoring with a simple press of a button. Utilizing Bluetooth Low Energy technology, the device seamlessly links with Pokémon Sleep. By holding the central button, placing it beside their pillow, and dozing off, players can effortlessly track their sleep data. Moreover, the familiar voice of Pikachu, emitted by the Pokémon GO Plus +, provides delightful prompts to awaken and lull players to sleep.

Pokémon Sleep is scheduled to launch globally in the summer of 2023, with the exception of specific regions. Additionally, Pokémon enthusiasts can mark the release of Pokémon GO Plus + on July 14, 2023, which will seemingly complement the Pokémon Sleep experience.

Smartphones Banned from Schools in Bid to Improve Learning

Smartphone addiction is a major problem in our society. Many of us are constantly checking our phones, even when we should be focusing on other things. This is especially true for children and teenagers, who are often more interested in their phones than their schoolwork. The Dutch government is taking steps to address this problem. Starting in January 2024, smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches will be largely banned from classrooms in the Netherlands. This is a positive step that will help students focus on their studies and learn more effectively.

Dutch Government Takes Steps to Protect Students from Smartphones

The Dutch government has announced that smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches will be largely banned from classrooms in the Netherlands from January 1, 2024. The ban is the result of an agreement between the ministry, schools, and related organizations. Education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf said in a statement that the ban is necessary to protect students from distractions and to help them focus on their studies. “Mobile phones are a disturbance, scientific research shows,” he said. “We need to protect students against this.”

Smartphones ban in Netherlands

The ban will only apply to smartphones that are not specifically needed for lessons. For example, smartphones can still be used for lessons on digital skills, or by students with medical conditions or disabilities. Schools will be responsible for enforcing the ban. However, if the ban does not yield enough results by the summer of 2024, legal rules will follow.

The rule banning phones in Dutch schools may be new, but it’s already common in many other parts of the world. When I was in high school, phones were also prohibited where I lived. And since then, the use of phones and social media has only increased. According to Common Sense Media, the average teenager now spends about 7 hours and 22 minutes on their phone every day. That includes time spent on social media, texting, gaming, watching videos, and using apps. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents aged 5-17 limit their screen time to 2 hours per day.

OnePlus Fold’s actual name might not sound very chic

A OnePlus foldable has been long overdue, especially now that every other Android brand has launched one. It seems we’ll be getting the OnePlus folding phone in August. But there haven’t been many leaks related to the device, leaving everything to assumptions, including its actual name. Some say it will be called the OnePlus Fold, while others christen it OnePlus V Fold. Now, a popular tipster suggests that OnePlus is going to throw us a curveball by calling the phone something out of the ordinary.

“OnePlus Open” sounds more like a magic spell

Max Jambor says OnePlus is taking a different approach to the name of its first foldable phone. Instead of calling it the OnePlus Fold, the company is apparently going with the name OnePlus Open. This is an unusual choice, but it could be a way for OnePlus to differentiate its foldable phone from the competition. If you don’t like the name, you’ll be relieved to know that the company also considered other names, such as OnePlus Wing, OnePlus Edge, OnePlus Prime, and OnePlus Peak (you read that right).

OnePlus Open

Although the moniker may not sound very chic, it’s still better than the conventional “Fold” and “Flip” names. A recent report revealed OnePlus could launch its first foldable sometime before or on August 19.

Rumors suggest the foldable will get an 8-inch QHD+ foldable OLED primary display along with a 6.5-inch FHD+ OLED secondary panel. It wouldn’t be unwise to assume the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC on the device. There are also reports that the foldable could be a rebranded Oppo Find N3, which should remain exclusive to the Chinese market. The OnePlus foldable is also said to support wireless charging.

Fiat 600e compact electric SUV with a range of up to 400km unveiled

Stelantis brand Fiat has unveiled its retro-styled 600e compact electric SUV that delivers a range of about 400km on a single charge. The new Fiat compact all-electric SUV comes with a good mix of retro features combined with a decent spec sheet.

Fiat 600e compact electric SUV

The Fiat 600e has the same WLTP range and 115kW power as the Jeep Avenger. It is slightly larger than the Fiat 500 but it is unclear where the electric motor of the 600e sits. It is likely a front-wheel-drive EV given that it shares the same platform and similar performance specs with the Jeep Avenger. It is noted that the Jeep Avenger does not have an AWD option. The Fiat 600e is shorter and narrower, but slightly taller than the 2022 Volkswagen Golf. It however packs sufficient power to place it in SUV terrain and comes with a 54kWh battery.

The Fiat 600e can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 9 seconds which reflects Fiat’s focus on comfort and convenience ahead of pace. The e-SUV comes equipped with lots of safety and other features that guarantee a comfortable drive inside the EV. These include a hands-free tailgate, 180-degree rearview camera, blind spot detection, and Level 2 assisted driving features on some trim options. The battery pack of the Fiat 600e can be charged up to 80% in just 30 minutes using 100kW fast charging.

Peugeot Cycles launches three new e-bikes designed for urban transit

The two-wheeler arm of Stelantis brand Peugeot has unveiled three new urban-focused e-bikes to accommodate varied interests. Each of the three new Peugeot Cycles models is designed to meet the needs of city dwellers of different hues and pockets. They are worthwhile options for those seeking to make the transition to two-wheeled sustainable mobility.

Peugeot Cycles

Electric bicycles continue to catch the fancy of a growing segment of both the urban and rural population in many countries. These urban mobility solutions have become very popular in parts of Europe and Asia, as well as a growing presence in the US. It is reported that more than 5.5 million e-bikes were sold in Europe alone last year, reflecting an 8.6 percent growth.

The electric bicycle industry in Europe has become the gold standard for measuring safety compliance in other markets. This has seen an influx of manufacturers into the European market, while also spreading to other markets.

Peugeot Cycles e-bike

Peugeot Cycles boasts a long record of performance in the two-wheeler industry. The bicycle subsidiary of French automaker Peugeot has been manufacturing bicycles since 1885. It has continued to catch the fancy of a large segment of the cycling public and its latest offerings expand this position.

The three new electric bicycles are targeted at urban dwellers who want to remain mobile at any time. The new e-bikes come with several tech features and can be paired with Peugeot’s proprietary smartphone app. This allows users to configure the settings of their bikes to suit their immediate needs.

Peugeot cargo bike

The Peugeot Digital E-Bike comes with an angular, boxy, and step-through frame. This gives the e-bike a unique utilitarian design, complemented by sleek handlebars and a prominent back sweep. This enables the rider to have a comfortable, upright seating position while on the go. It features a mid-drive motor connected to a low-maintenance belt-drive system.

The Peugeot Digital e-Longtail is a long-tail cargo e-bike. This offers extra carrying capacity for commuters but it retains the agility and nimbleness of a commuter e-bike. It has a long wheelbase for added stability and it can accommodate two kids aside from the extra cargo. The Peugeot Digital e-Front Load is a full-blown cargo e-bike. Peugeot Cycles says it is ideal for both family and business use, as it can take up to three kids aside from the cargo. The Digital e-Front Load uses a mid-drive motor connected to a chain drive system.

Peugeot Cycles is silent on the release and availability details of the new e-bikes. It is however expected that these models will enter the European market before possibly spreading to other regions. Pricing details for the e-bikes are also lacking at this time.

Instagram Threads to soon add basic features like Search, Hashtags, Following Feed

Elon Musk’s draconian policies on Twitter made the platform limiting for users, which gave rivals like Meta an opportunity to launch an alternative. Threads by Instagram is the latest attempt to challenge Twitter’s Dominance, and unlike previous attempts such as Truth Social and Koo, it is gaining traction with users. However, Threads is not without its flaws. The platform lacks some basic features like search, hashtags, and a following feed. Meta has said that it plans to add these features in the near future.

New features could make Threads a worthy Twitter rival

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said that the team behind Threads is working to add the missing basic features to the platform. These features include search, hashtags, a following feed, graph syncing, and diverse support. Mosseri also said that messaging may be enabled soon, but he did not give a specific timeline.

Instagram-Threads-App

The platform has been criticized for its lack of features, and these additions will make it more competitive with other social media platforms, especially Twitter. It is worth noting that Threads has received a solid headstart. The platform has already surpassed 30 million signups, and it was the top free app in Apple’s App Store as of Thursday morning. However, it remains to be seen whether Threads will be able to maintain its momentum.

Threads’ tight integration with Instagram has been a major factor in its success. Users can simply link their Instagram account to Threads, and they’ll be able to start sharing content with their friends and followers right away. This makes it easy for people to get started with Threads, and it also helps to retain users who are already on Instagram.

Gizmochina is now on Threads! Follow us to stay in touch and get the latest news from the tech world.
