Xiaomi terminates software support for Redmi Note 9 Pro, Mi 10 Lite 5G, and more

Xiaomi ended software support for Mi 10 Lite Zoom, a China-exclusive smartphone in late April. Back then, we suggested that the global Mi 10 Lite 5G may get a similar treatment in a month. This has happened now as the device has been listed on Xiaomi’s official EOS (End of Support) list.

At the same time, the company has dropped software support for three of the Redmi Note 9 series handsets, such as Redmi Note 9S, Redmi Note 9 Pro, and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. Let’s go through the details.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro Redmi Note 9S Featured

According to Xiaomiui, Xiaomi has added the Mi 10 Lite 5G to its EOS list. This confirms the termination of software support for this phone.

On the other hand, the aforementioned Redmi Note 9 models are yet to be included in the said list. But as per the security bulletin, they are supposed to receive security updates only until May 2023.

As these phones just received a security update in April and May is about to end, there may not be a new software build hereafter. The EOS list will likely be updated in a  while with these handsets.

All these smartphones were released in early 2020. So Xiaomi ended their software support 3 years after their release.

For comparison, similarly priced Samsung devices from the same period will continue to receive software support till next year (4 years). But Oppo, Vivo, and Realme have the same policy as Xiaomi.

It boasts a dual-glass and plastic frame construction, contributing to its thin and lightweight body. There’s an unnecessarily large camera module but Vivo makes up for it with a neat camera setup.

The upcoming Vivo S17 series is likely to be no exception. The design and construction of all three phones should resemble the current Vivo S16 devices. They could have their sides curved towards the longer edges. The frame is expected to be made of plastic with a glossy finish, flat around the top and bottom sides, and super thin across the left and right.

Vivo will be making some changes to the camera module though. While the phones will still feature a large rectangular island for the cameras, the alignment will be different. Based on the TENAA images of the Vivo S17 Pro, it appears that there will now be only two large camera rings, with the third ring being replaced by an LED flash. The third camera sensor will now be positioned next to the second LED flash on the other end of the module. The non-pro phones will get a dual camera setup.

Vivo phones shine in the selfie camera department. Quite literally, because the Vivo S17 Pro will feature a pair of dual-tone LED lights hidden in the left and right top corners of the display. These will help users to take good selfies even in the dark. The Vivo S17, S17t, and S17 Pro will all get a large 6.78-inch AMOLED display. They will offer an impressive 1.5K resolution of 1260 x 2800 pixels. Furthermore, the panel is expected to support a 120Hz refresh rate.

Specifications

Talking about the other hardware specs, the Vivo S17 will be powered by the Snapdragon 782G processor, while the S17t is rumored to get a Dimensity 8050 chip running at 3GHz. Both devices are likely to support fast charging technology, with either 66W or 80W charging.

In terms of camera setup, the S17 and S17t will sport a dual-camera configuration on the rear. This setup will consist of a 50MP primary Sony IMX766V sensor with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and an 8MP Sony IMX355 ultra-wide sensor.

Moving on to the Vivo S17 Pro, it is rumored to be powered by the Dimensity 8200 processor and support 80W charging. Unlike the other two phones, the S17 Pro will feature a triple-camera setup, including a 50MP Sony IMX766V main sensor with OIS, a 12MP Sony IMX663 telephoto sensor, and an 8MP Sony IMX355 ultra-wide lens.

All three phones in the Vivo S17 series will come preloaded with the Android 13 operating system with the OriginOS 3.1 user interface on top. They will also include an under-display fingerprint scanner, an IR blaster, and NFC support. The Vivo S17 trio is expected to be available in different RAM variants such as 8GB, 12GB, and 16GB, along with storage options ranging from 128GB to 512 GB. Powering these smartphones will be a 4,505mAh battery.

Expected Pricing

The pricing details of the upcoming Vivo S17 series are yet to be known. We can expect a slight price bump as compared to last year’s models. For reference, the base storage versions of the Vivo S16 series were priced as follows in China:

Japan to Lead the Space-based Solar Power Race, Research in Full Swing

The race to develop technology for transmitting solar power collected in space to Earth is gaining momentum, with various countries and organizations competing to unlock the potential of this innovative solution. Japan, in particular, is leading the charge, as a public-private partnership aims to conduct a trial by the year 2025.

The cost to generate space-based solar power, however, is still extremely high

The concept of space-based solar power was proposed by an American physicist in 1968 and involves launching solar panels into space to generate electricity at an altitude of 36,000 kilometers. The generated solar power is then converted into microwaves, similar to those used in microwave ovens, and transmitted to ground-based receiving stations, where it is converted back into electrical energy.

Solar Power Japan

One of the advantages of space-based solar power is its ability to provide a stable supply of energy regardless of weather conditions. Microwaves can penetrate through clouds, ensuring a consistent flow of power throughout the day and in various weather conditions. On the other hand, regular solar power is highly dependant upon factors like cloud cover, which can be detrimental to the steady supply of energy.

Japan has been at the forefront of this research, with a group led by former Kyoto University President Hiroshi Matsumoto spearheading the efforts. In the 1980s, Japan achieved a significant milestone by successfully transmitting power via microwaves in space. The group continued its research under the guidance of Kyoto University professor Naoki Shinohara, and in 2009, an industry-government-academia project was launched under the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

The project achieved notable progress, including successful microwave power transmission experiments over distances of 50 meters in both horizontal and vertical directions. Looking to the future, the group plans to attempt vertical transmission over longer distances ranging from 1 km to 5 km.

Competitors from other countries are also actively pursuing the commercialization of space-based solar power technology. The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology have embarked on large-scale projects, while Chongqing University in China and the European Space Agency are advancing their own technologies.

While the potential benefits of space-based solar power are immense, cost remains a significant challenge. To generate 1 gigawatt, equivalent to the output of a nuclear reactor, an extensive area of solar panels would be required. Even with technological advancements, the estimated cost of installing such capacity exceeds 1 trillion yen ($7.1 billion).

Nonetheless, as governments and businesses worldwide prioritize renewable energy and the reduction of carbon emissions, space-based solar power has gained renewed attention. The upcoming trial planned by the Japanese partnership in fiscal 2025 aims to demonstrate the feasibility of transmitting power from space to the ground, furthering the progress in this field.

If successful, space-based solar power could revolutionize the way we harness and utilize clean energy, offering a sustainable solution to meet our energy needs. The competition to develop this groundbreaking technology is fierce, and Japan is determined to remain at the forefront of this global race.

Portugal plans to ban Huawei from 5G networks amid security concerns

Portugal is reportedly planning to ban Huawei from its national 5G network, as per the latest report coming from Reuters based on the document from the country’s cyber security council.

As per the report, the country’s government is concerned about the security of Huawei’s equipment. The document outlines a plan to restrict the use of high-risk kits, which includes Huawei, among other companies.

Huawei

It recommends barring local carriers from sourcing 5G equipment from suppliers based outside of the European Union or from countries that are not a part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED).

The decision is a major blow to the Chinese giant Huawei, which is the world’s leading supplier of 5G equipment. If the government does ban Huawei, then it will have a significant impact on the Portuguese 5G rollout. Altice Portugal, the largest wireless carrier in the country, signed a deal a few years ago to use Huawei equipment for part of its 5G rollout.

Huawei has said that it is disappointed by the decision of the Portugal government and added that it will continue to work with the government to address its concerns. It further states that the company is confident that it will be able to meet the security requirements.

The development comes amid growing concerns about the security of equipment from Huawei, as the company has been accused of being vulnerable to Chinese spying. A number of countries have banned Huawei from their 5G networks, including the United States, and countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan have imposed restrictions.

If the Portuguese government goes ahead with the ban, then it would join Canada and a handful of other European countries, including Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, that have recently banned the Chinese company from participating in their 5G networks.
