Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to get a 50% more powerful GPU than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2

Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 towards the end of last year and we’ve already seen it under the hood of many flagship phones. Undoubtedly, the processor is a significant upgrade over the 8 Gen 1 SoC both in terms of performance and efficiency. Rumors are rife that Qualcomm will push the envelope further with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, scheduled for the last quarter of the year. The latest piece of info suggests the chipset will get a 50% boost in its GPU performance. Here are the details.

As claimed by noted tipster Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm is planning to introduce the forthcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with a significantly more powerful GPU than the existing Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which gets the Adreno 740. As per the tipster, the GPU, which could be called the Adreno 750 for obvious reasons, will offer 50% better performance than its predecessor.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 GPU

Mr. Chat Station notes that the difference in GPU performance between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Apple’s A16 is already quite significant, and it seems that the next generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip will maintain its lead over Apple’s upcoming A17 chip in the GPU department.

From what we know so far, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will feature a unique 2+3+2+1 architecture, although specific clock frequencies are not yet available. It is reported to achieve a multi-core score of approximately 6,500 points and a single-core score of around 1,800 points on Geekbench. Further, it is expected to continue using the 5 nm class node (N4P) from TSMC.

Tata Group reportedly set to complete acquisition of Wistron’s iPhone factory in India

Tata Group, the Indian multinational conglomerate, is reportedly in the final stages of acquiring Wistron’s iPhone manufacturing facility in India. The deal, worth over Rs 5,000 crores, is expected to be completed by the end of April. The facility, located in Karnataka, currently produces iPhone 14 and 12 models and is equipped with eight assembly lines.

Credit: Reuters Photo

Following the acquisition, Tata Group plans to begin assembling the iPhone 15 later this year. The move could see India become a key manufacturing hub for Apple products, as three Taiwanese firms – Wistron, Pegatron, and Foxconn – currently assemble Apple products in India. While Wistron is leaving the country’s iPhone business, Foxconn and Pegatron have recently expanded their production operations.

Tata Group’s interest in Apple manufacturing comes as the Indian government actively pushes for the country to become a production hub, and Apple seeks to move out of China. Industry experts suggest that the acquisition could prove lucrative for Tata Group, with speculations that the company may move on to acquire Pegatron’s iPhone manufacturing facilities once the Wistron deal is finalized.

However, the acquisition may also result in job losses, as sources indicate that around 2,000 factory workers may need to depart. Additionally, a reduction of 400 mid-level executives and the departure of 4-5 senior executives are also on the cards. Despite this, Tata Group has reportedly begun organizational changes at the facility in preparation for the acquisition.

The move highlights the growing trend of multinational conglomerates expanding their presence in the tech industry, with Tata Group joining the ranks of Apple’s current manufacturing partners. As the tech industry continues to grow and evolve, the acquisition could have significant implications for both Apple and the Indian manufacturing sector.

Tesla Finds a Way to Make Affordable Electric Vehicles

The popularity of electric vehicles is increasing every day. However, the technology is still quite expensive. Some Chinese manufacturers, such as BYD, are working on different models to change this situation, but their developments are not affecting the European and American markets. Fortunately Tesla has a solution for affordable EV problem. Here are the details….

Tesla Turns to Iron-Based Batteries for Semi Electric Trucks and Affordable EVs

Tesla has announced plans to utilize lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology in its Semi electric trucks and upcoming affordable electric car. CEO Elon Musk has been a vocal advocate for LFP batteries, which are predominantly supplied by Chinese manufacturers. In March, Musk stated, “the vast majority of the heavy lifting for electrification will be iron-based cells.”

Tesla’s “Master Plan Part 3,” released on Wednesday, revealed that LFP batteries would be used for “short-range” heavy electric trucks, dubbed “Semi Light.” The company has not yet provided further details, such as a launch date. Last December, Tesla began delivering its Semi electric trucks with a 500-mile driving range per charge, utilizing nickel-based batteries. The automaker has also previously announced plans for a 300-mile range version.

The company’s proposed small electric vehicles will use LFP batteries with a capacity of 53 kWh, compared to the 75 kWh capacity in the Model Y and Model 3. Tesla has also committed to reducing assembly costs by 50% in future car generations, which will be manufactured at its factories in Mexico and other locations. The company plans to use LFP batteries in its mid-sized vehicles, Model 3 and Model Y, though a timeline has not been provided. Currently, Tesla uses nickel-based batteries for most of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles sold in the United States.

Tesla Model Y Red and Grey

Proponents of LFP technology, including Musk, argue that the abundance and lower cost of iron outweigh the drawbacks that have limited the adoption of LFP cells globally. These batteries are larger, heavier, and generally hold less energy than nickel-based cells, resulting in a shorter range. However, LFP cells tend to pose a lower fire risk compared to nickel-based cells. Tesla currently sources LFP batteries from China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co, which does not have a factory in the United States. Tesla’s South Korean supplier, LG Energy Solution, has plans to produce LFP batteries at its proposed Arizona factory.

Google improves Night Sight on Pixel 6 series with new Update

Pixel 7 Pro and its smaller sibling brought serious camera improvements with themselves, so much so that they are called one of the best Android camera phones out there. The most notable camera feature that Google introduced with its latest flagships was improved night mode with more manual control. Luckily, the brand has now started rolling out the latest camera feature set to its older Pixel 6 series with a new update. Here are the details.

As reported by 9to5Google, faster Night Sight for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro is rolling out with version 8.8 of Google Camera. Users will now notice a 50% shorter exposure time when using the feature. In addition, the Night Sight photos will have less blur and be noticeably sharper. Google has also worked on HDR+ with Bracketing to reduce noise in the pictures.

After updating to Google Camera 8.8, Pixel 7 series users will notice a circle in the bottom-right corner when switching to the Night Sight tab. Upon tapping on the button, they will be able to select two seconds or Max (which goes up to six seconds). However, the time increment is likely to vary between two to six seconds depending on the shooting conditions. It’s worth noting that the new zoom bar seen on the Pixel 7 phones didn’t make it to the Pixel 6.

Google announced this new feature with last month’s Feature Drop. The new Google Camera version 8.8 is being rolled out widely and you may get it through Play Store or wait for the automatic update. Separately, Google Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 7, and 7 Pro smartphones received general improvements in camera stability and performance in certain conditions with the March security patch.

Your smartphone isn’t eavesdropping on you talking about certain products for targeted ads

We’ve all had that one experience where we had been talking about something that we wished to buy (it could be a new laptop, a smartphone, or whatever), and not long after, we see advertisements of the products that were in the conversation. This has led to many to believe that our electronic products like smartphones, tablets, or smart speakers could be spying on us. But is that really the case? Let’s find out.

This phenomenon isn’t just exclusive to gadgets and could even include certain medicines, furniture, and much more. Thus, when you see an ad online talking about a certain product (which you need) going on discount at a store near you, one would naturally assume that your very own smartphone is spying on you. However, a recent test from the UK’s Daily Mail has suggested that this might not be the case.

Smartphone

The test was conducted by setting up a new Google account on a Samsung Galaxy smartphone that was factory reset to ensure that this is how the device would function straight out of the box. For the test, a 22 year old named Robin was created and a fake Facebook account was also made for this fictitious persona. Following this, daily Mail talked about the names of products nearby for two days straight to see if this impacted the advertisement that were being displayed online through the Galaxy handset.

However, the test found that the smartphone wasn’t eavesdropping on any of the conversation around its vicinity since it did not receive any online ads that were related to said products. In other words, your device is probably not listening to your conversations and is likely tracking your activity based on the products you search for or click on online. Jordan Schroeder, the person that head’s the firm’s network security , also added that OEMs don’t need to listen in on your conversation since there are plenty of other ways of collecting the data that they need from your smartphone.

To further prove this point, Daily Mail used the fake Robin’s account on Google to search for ‘luxury car’ and ‘expensive bed’ using Google Assistant and even Google Search. Follow this, the ads targeted online were all related to cars from high end brands as well as bed companies. Google took it a step further and also created a webpage with brands that Robin want to potentially check out.

For those interested, you can find your personalized page by going to myadcenter.google.com. This is the webpage that basically compiles all the topics and brands that you have been interested in. Keep in mind that this feature won’t work for those who have their personalized ads switched off. One can even customize the settings to receive lesser or even more advertisements related to particular topics or specific brands from the My Ad Center website.

Ampere launches 80-core Arm dev kit with support for Nvidia RTX GPUs

Ampere has announced the launch of its Altra Dev Kit, an 80-core Arm development kit that offers support for Nvidia RTX GPUs, all at a price point similar to that of high-end conventional systems. The kit is targeted at those looking to prototype hardware or software for edge computing, but its potential uses extend far beyond that niche market.

Ampere launches 80-core Arm dev kit with support for Nvidia RTX GPUs

The Altra Dev Kit, which comes in a simple cardboard box, includes a feature-packed motherboard, an SoC attached to a daughterboard, three heatsinks, and a VGA to HDMI cable. Prices start at $2,003 for the 32-core kit, with the 80-core kit available at $2,621. While Ampere also produces a 128-core SoC, it is currently out of stock.

Based on the Arm Neoverse N1 architecture, Ampere offers four different SoCs designed for data centers. The 32-core model runs at 1.7 GHz, while the 64-core model boasts a 2.2 GHz clock speed. Both the 80-core and 128-core models can reach speeds of up to 2.6 GHz. Each model includes 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes and supports up to 768 GB of DDR4 ECC memory across six channels. Ampere and its parent company, IPI (Industrial Prototyping for IoT), sell these systems to consumers strictly for development and testing purposes.

In addition to the Altra Dev Kit, Ampere offers the Altra Developer Platform, a prebuilt tower that resembles a standard gaming PC with a tempered glass panel and five RGB fans. Though the unbranded 128 GB M.2 stick and mismatched DDR4 slots may make it appear like a midrange machine, the platform starts at $3,250 for the 32-core, 32 GB RAM version, and can be configured up to 128 cores and 128 GB of RAM for $5,658.

One of the standout features of Ampere’s data center SoCs is their advertised support for Windows and consumer Nvidia RTX GPUs right out of the box. The Developer Platform comes with an unspecified discrete GPU as standard, but users can upgrade to an RTX GPU later on, as demonstrated by Ampere’s edge computing head Joe Speed on Twitter. The compatibility with RTX GPUs opens up the possibility of using the Arm chips for AAA gaming. Nvidia already utilizes these chips to stream mobile games in China, in conjunction with its A16 GPUs.

With its powerful capabilities and support for Nvidia RTX GPUs, the Ampere Altra Dev Kit presents an exciting opportunity for developers and enthusiasts alike, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in edge computing and beyond.

Microsoft faces $3 million fine for selling software to Russian companies

Microsoft has apparently been hit with a sizeable fine worth millions of US Dollars. The company is facing the fine after being caught selling its software to Russian based firms. So here are all the details.

The American tech giant has agreed to pay over 3 million US Dollars to settle a potential civil liability. The brand is being accused of 1,339 sanction violations for selling its products and services to individuals and companies in Russia and other certain other regions. These violations and more than 1,300 cases had taken place between the periods of July 2012 and April 2019. During this time, Microsoft has supposedly sold software licenses, activated software licenses, and related services from its and US and Ireland servers to “Specially Designated Nationals”.

In other words, the company is being hit with the fine for selling to blacklisted regions. These regions includes nations like Cuba, Iran, Syria, Russia, and the Crimea region of Ukraine as well. Microsoft and its Ireland and Russia subsidiaries has thus agreed on a settlement sum worth 2.98 million US Dollars with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury following a previous Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) settlement of 624,013 US Dollars.

The fines don’t end there as the BIS later hit the company with a 276,382 US Dollars credit, which brings the net settlement agreement to cross over 3.3 million US Dollars. Interestingly enough, 94 percent of all of these violations were from Russia, accounting for 1,252 out of the 1,339 cases. Meanwhile, 54 of these cases were from Cuba, 30 in Iran, and 3 in Syria.
