Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023: A Redmi Pad Killer

Last month, we told you how Redmi Pad is probably the best budget Android tablet on the market. The device had no direct competitor back then.

However, just within a few weeks, the situation has now changed drastically. Lenovo has recently released a new tablet for around the same price with a better feature set.

Officially called the Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023, the product is essentially a Redmi Pad killer. Let us explain why we feel this way.

Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023

Here’s Why Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023 Is a Redmi Pad Killer

1. Larger Display With Stylus Support

The Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023 not only has a larger display but also a faster refresh rate. The panel measures 11.5-inch diagonally and can refresh up to 120Hz. For comparison, the Redmi Pad comes with a 10.61-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate.

Additionally, the screen on the Lenovo tablet support stylus input. It has 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity.

Otherwise, the display has the same WUXGA+ (2000 x 1200 pixels) resolution and 400 nits peak brightness as the one on the Redmi tablet.

2. Multiple First-Party Accessories

Since the Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023’s display support stylus input, users can opt for the new Xiaoxin Stylus Smart Edition. While the Redmi Pad does not offer this functionality.

Further, the Lenovo tablet sports a magnetic pogo pin connector for the official keyboard accessory, which also has a kickstand. No such thing on the Redmi tablet.

Lenovo also sells a first-party screen protector and a flip cover, which Redmi don’t.

3. Better Software

The Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023 boots Lenovo’s Android 12L-based ZUI 14 skin designed for tablets. Since the company has been selling tablets with this software for quite a while, it has made several improvements to offer a better experience.

You can check out this software in action in our Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 vs Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro comparison video. On the other hand, a year after its debut, MIUI Pad is still lackluster as you can note in our Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro 12.4 review video.

Unfortunately, Lenovo tablets use close-to-stock Android outside mainland China. So this point may become invalid if and when Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023 releases in global markets under the Lenovo Tab P series.

4. 3.5mm Headphone Jack and More

Most smartphones don’t come with a 3.5mm headphone jack anymore. This trend is slowly catching up with budget tablets as well.

Thankfully, Xiaoxin Pad Plus 2023 features the beloved jack, unlike the Redmi Pad. The former also arrives with a higher 13MP rear camera compared to an 8MP shooter on the latter.

Finally, the Lenovo tablet also offers WiFi 6 and 20W fast charging support as opposed to WiFi 5 and 18W fast charging support on Redmi.

Largest Apple iPhone factory sees 7 day lockdown in China

China has just recently ordered a seven day long lockdown in a region, which is also where Foxconn Technology has its largest iPhone plant. This would likely affect Apple shipments as its largest suppliers biggest plant is down for a week.

According to a BusinessStandard report, the Chinese government has implemented a lockdown around Foxconn’s main iPhone plant in Zhengzhou. The lockdown is currently in effect and will last until the 9th of November 2022. This news was also published on the local government’s official WeChat account. As of right now, the government has barred all vehicles to operate in the region of the lockdown, except those that are carrying essential goods. The lockdown was implemented in Zhengzhou after the area saw a sizeable jump to 359 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday. This was up from just 95 from a just a day prior.

Apple

The sudden lockdown is a part of China initiative of Covid Zero approach to controlling each outbreak. Now, Foxconn’s main iPhone plant was unfortunately caught in this zone and has had its operations abruptly halted. The Taiwanese company is the largest supplier in Apple’s supply chain and has had to force some of its 200,000 strong staff into quarantine. Furthermore, some were pushed to flee the site, with some even leaving on foot. Following this lockdown, the company will also face complications to recruit and bring in new staff members.

Foxconn would even be troubled to ship production materials to continue their operations. At the moment, neither Foxconn or Apple has given out any statement regarding this news. Although, the former is working on raising wages and arranging backups from its other Chinese plants to mitigate this sudden operations disruption in its Zhengzhou iPhone assembly line. While Apple has just launched its iPhone 14 lineup, it refrained from bumping orders due to an ongoing economic slump, which has led to a decline in smartphone sales.

REDMI NOTE 12 Pro Review – Perfect budget phone, but not for gaming

As you know, in China, Redmi has split the Note series into two versions in order to make the phone choice easier for users. The one with a T in its name is biased for more powerful performance. For example, the Note 11T Pro has the strongest SOC of any mid-range phone. Those without a T in their name focuses on being a well-balanced phone. For example, the Note 11 Pro is stronger than the 11T Pro in all aspects, except performance. Today we have the Redmi Note 12 Pro, so don’t expect too much from its performance this time, but let’s look at what else is interesting.

The Note 12 Pro is a continuation of the previous generation’s design. The straight screen, straight back panel with a flat frame, feels and looks very much like the Note 11T Pro, as the lens module is basically an enlarged version of the Note 11T Pro. We got the purple version because I wanted to show you the new colorway. This version has a light spot on the back panel, so there should be a lot of girls who will like this color.

Redmi Note 12 pro_2
Redmi Note 12 pro_2

But I still recommend white, it looks purer. The side is still the power fingerprint two-in-one button. The top has a headphone jack, IR emitter, and NFC, but the SIM card slot does not support TF card expansion. The 187g plus the less than 8mm body makes the Note 12 Pro feel not as heavy in your hand as you might expect. I would give the Note 12 Pro a good rating for its design, which is good enough for a device priced at $240.

Redmi Note 12 pro_3
Redmi Note 12 pro_3

This time the screen looks no different from the Note 11 Pro, but in fact there are still some small upgrades. 12 Pro’s screen uses a flexible OLED screen, the most obvious advantage is that the lower bezel is narrower. From the front, it already looks more beautiful than many $400+ phones. There is no problem with the screen quality, which is still diamond-like pixels. The resolution is 1080P with a 120Hz refresh rate. And it uses a 1920Hz PWM dimming at low brightness and support Dolby Vision, with peak brightness of 900 nits. Overall, the quality of this screen is superb in the same price range.

Redmi Note 12 Pro – Specs & Hardware

Redmi Note 12 pro_11
Redmi Note 12 pro_11

As I said at the beginning, the Note 12 Pro’s performance is on the weaker side. It uses the Dimensity 1080, MediaTek’s latest mid-range chip. Both Antutu and 3DMark test, all kinds of scores are telling us that it is almost no different from the previous gen Dimensity 920. So what exactly is the level of performance of this chip, when you come to see the performance of each game frame rate, you will know. Of course, for the cell phone PUBG is now not a big problem. Just follow the usual test. Then there’s Genshin Impact, which averages fps less than 40. Look at this frame rate curve, it’s like a roller coaster, not a good performance. If you lock the frame rate at 30fps, you should be able to run more stable. If you want a cheap phone that can run Genshin smoothly, I would recommend buying a Dimensity 8100 phone, such as the Note 11T Pro.

Redmi Note 12 Pro – Camera Review

REdmi Note 12 pro_camera
Redmi Note 12 pro_camera

The camera is one of the main focuses of the Note 12 Pro upgrade. While the Pro version doesn’t use the latest 200MP main camera, our old friend the IMX 766 is not bad, after all it is also used in OPPO’s flagship phones. Let’s take a look at the filters and Art frames that Redmi is focusing on. 7 new film filters have been added to the Note 12 series, all of which add noise to photos while changing the color tendency. Although I’m not a fan of film photography, there are some scenes that would look great using these filters. Especially with the new Art frame, people who like photography will love it.

Main Camera

Because the main camera has added OIS this time, the sensor area has also become larger, so the photos in dark light are better than the previous one. Especially the 2x is not blurred at night due to handshake anymore, even the 5x, the photos can be quite usable. The night mode is also more interesting this time, it doesn’t improve the dynamic range, but controls the highlights and makes the dark parts darker. This will make some night scenes look more like they were taken at night, with less noise, which looks good. But some scenes need brighter highlights and it lowers the exposure, such as a neon box, which doesn’t look as good as Auto mode. And often the color temperature is cool, so if you want to take a good photo at night with the Note 12 Pro, you need a little experience and skill.

Macro camera performance is quite poor, not recommended for frequent use.

The video recording part is a little better than the Note 11 Pro. Because the video stability will be a little better with the addition of OIS. But compared to other phones with EIS is still not stable enough. The highest shooting specs are 4K 30fps for the main camera and 1080P 30fps for the ultra-wide camera, which is unchanged from the Note 11 Pro.

Check out the full sized camera samples from the Redmi Note 12 Pro here.

Redmi Note 12 Pro – Battery & Charging

Redmi Note 12 pro_battery
Redmi Note 12 pro_battery

The charging power of the Pro version is still 67w and the battery is 5000mAh. It is 20g lighter than the 11 Pro and the battery is only 160mAh smaller, which I think is worth it. The large battery plus the poor performance means that its battery life must be very long-lasting. The phone consumes 5% for Tiktok and 1080P video, 4% for PUBG and 7% for Genshin. A little improvement over 11 Pro+.

Honestly, I love phones like the Note 12 Pro. Getting all aspects right is more value for most people. Because as long as you don’t play large 3D games on your phone, this is the phone for you. And at only 240 bucks, it’s affordable to change your phone even once a year. Every year with a new phone, how cool is that.

The entire Redmi Note 12 series, including the Redmi Note 12 Pro is available on Giztop right now.

Samsung Galaxy A14 battery & camera specs leaked

Samsung has been gearing up to launch a new Galaxy A series smartphones soon. The smartphone is expected to the be the Galaxy A14 model, who’s camera and battery specifications just got leaked ahead of an official announcement.

The news arrives from a GalaxyClub report, which leaked these key specs regarding the Galaxy A14 model. Previously, we had also reported on the device from the South Korean tech giant being spotted on a GeekBench listing. Now, the new report reveals that the Galaxy A14 will feature a 50 megapixel primary camera on the rear. The last gen Galaxy A13 featured a quad camera setup at the back, which consisted of a 50 megapixel primary sensor, an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle lens, a 2 megapixel macro, and a 2 megapixel depth sensor.

Samsung

So, we can expect the company to ship the newer model with the same sensors. However, it appears that Samsung is dropping one of these rear camera sensors this time, since leaked renders showcase only a triple camera module. Apart from this, the report further claimed that the Galaxy A14 model will be powered by a large 5,000mAh battery pack, which carries the model number EB-BA146ABY. This also means that the battery is another aspect in which we won’t see any notable changes.

Lastly, the upcoming handset will apparently also offer a 13 megapixel front facing camera, which is an upgrade over the 8 megapixel selfie shooter on the Galaxy A13 model. Based on what we know so far, the Galaxy A14 will also be equipped with a MediaTek Helio G80 SoC and a Mali G52 GPU. This chipset is quite dated and will be coupled with 4GB of RAM. There might also be a 6GB RAM variant as well, with the device expected to ship with Android 13 OS based One UI 5 out of the box.

Redmi Pad

Xiaomi has just announced a new software application that is built for gamers. The new software is called Kite, which is a frame rate testing application for games and it is made for Android smartphone models to allow gamers to check their device’s performance in game.

Xiaomi

As per official notes, the Chinese tech giant launched this new software for free in the Chinese market. Previously, Tencent had a similar offering, and now, Xiaomi has also released its own rival frame rate test app. The company claims that the new software offers a professional grade thermal optimization tool with accurate data, while taking low performance and even consuming low power as well. The brand states that it is a simple plug and play test that takes barely any power and can be run in the background 24/7.

At the moment, the Kite app arrives with support for many mainstream Android smartphone models. Furthermore, it is also compatible with various popular CPU architectures and even multiple versions of Android. But unfortunately, there is still no support for iOS and iPhones, although a version for the other platform is apparently under development. When using Kite, the smartphone can run the game at the same time for the best testing results.

Xiaomi

In a power consumption test, a game was ran for 40 minutes on a Xiaomi branded smartphone. During the testing period while gaming, the power consumption by the Kite software was just about 15mA. This led to the company’s claim that this app consumer the lowest power amongst its competitors. The software is available for free in China, and those interested can click on this link here to check it out themselves.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept unveiled, with Leica M Series detachable lens

Xiaomi has just unveiled an interesting new smartphone that it has been working on. The device in question is the Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept Edition, which features a unique rear camera setup that includes an attachable Leica lens for enhanced photography.

Xiaomi

The Chinese tech giant has just shared a new teaser video and image poster on its official Weibo account. Looking at these teasers, we can see that the upcoming handset is a high end model with a clear emphasis on camera photography. The teasers on the Chinese microblogging website state that the new smartphone will feature a 1 inch primary camera sensor on the back. However, this sensor will be further complimented by a dedicated Leica M series lens, which is detachable from the large rear camera module.

As per official notes, Xiaomi is the first to install a full Leica camera lens on a smartphone to enhance the photography performance of the new 12S Ultra Concept edition. The company claims that the new lens will help the device offer both a flagship level smartphone experience as well as a professional photography tool. While finer details of the device is still unclear, the brand’s CEO Lei Jun shared some details regarding the cameras. The 12S Ultra Concept apparently offers two 1 inch sensors with one being a regular sensor found on smartphones, while the one in the middle of the module is paired with the external lenses.

Xiaomi

Furthermore, the module also houses an ultra wide angle lens as well, however, there is no zoom lens. The magnification ability might just be offered by the external lens as well. As of right now, this is all the details that the company has shared online. We can expect more teasers and leaks to surface soon, so stick around for more updates regarding this matter.

Google Pixel 7 Pro durability test reveals a flex problem

Almost a month after its official launch, the Google Pixel 7 Pro has made it to popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything’s chopping block for a durability test. And spoiler alert: the device has some serious structural problems.

The Pixel 7 Pro is entirely constructed out of recycled aluminum, as demonstrated in the JerryRigEverything video. The phone looks classy and gorgeous because the side frame is made of metal and not plastic. However, the video does point out that the bump on the rear camera is a concern.

Google Pixel 7 Pro durability test

The display, which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, served as the starting point for the durability test of the Pixel 7 Pro. We find scratches at level 6, similar to the majority of phones, and deeper markings at level 7. This confirms the phone does indeed have scratch-resistant glass, which is often expected from a flagship product these days.

The second portion of the video demonstrates the Pixel 7 Pro’s metal frame, which also houses the power and volume rocker controls. The back camera bump is also constructed of metal but has been painted to give it a distinctive dual-color tone design. However, the core issue is that the bump quickly scratches even after a very brief contact with keys, coins, or any other pocket things. Particularly after paying a premium fee, this looks terrible.

The glass on the back panel is also prone to scratches, and they are very noticeable. The burn test is the next step. Under a flame from a regular lighter, the pixels of the OLED panel burn at the 20-second mark and don’t return to normal. The display is still operational, though.

The bend test comes next in the video. Even though the phone doesn’t bend and split in half, we can hear fractures near the camera bump, and the antenna line flexes somewhat, leaving a permanent bend on the Pixel 7 Pro. This means it’s best to use the phone with a case because the phone’s frame around the camera isn’t very sturdy.

Samsung Galaxy S22 series unlocked models start receiving Android 13 update in the US

Samsung has been rolling out the latest Android 13 update for its flagship Galaxy S22 series smartphones for about a month now and the company is now finally releasing the new version update for users in the United States.

After releasing the update for Verizon and T-Mobile users, the South Korean giant is now releasing the new Android 13 update for those users who have an unlocked phone, reports SamMobile.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

Samsung usually rolls out new updates in the United States sometime after releasing them globally, most likely because the market is very critical for the company and it doesn’t want to release a botched update and lose customers.

Those with the unlocked Samsung Galaxy S22 series smartphones, which include Galaxy S22, S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra, will be getting firmware version S90xU1UEU2BVJA for the Android 13 operating system with the company’s own One UI 5.0 custom user interface and October 2022 security patch.

The update comes with several visual changes to the user interface as the company attempts to make the user experience better and seamless. It also comes with support for disabling RAM Plus, improved Digital Wellbeing, and the addition of various emojis, stickers, text styles, animations, and transitions, among others.

If you have an unlocked Galaxy S22 series smartphone and live in the United States but haven’t received the update yet, then you can go to the Settings app and navigate to Software Update, and then tap on Download to install the new update.
